& Mojave 3 Mailing List Avalyn
Welcome to the list!
The Slowdive & Mojave 3 mailing list was made to cater for the
discussions about the (no longer active) Creation band Slowdive
and the (active) 4AD band Mojave 3 from the UK, as well as being
a distribution list for the Internet Slowdive and Mojave 3
Discographies.
The instructions for this list are the same as most mailing lists:
* To subscribe, unsubscribe, request digests, etc.
E-mail: avalyn-request@lysator.liu.se
* To send a message to the list
E-mail: avalyn@lysator.liu.se
* To reach the owner of the list.
E-mail: chief@lysator.liu.se, or owner-avalyn@lysator.liu.se
The Slowdive Digest

is not a daily digest, rather it is made and sent out to the digest
subscribers when the size of collected messages from the "live" list
reach about 40-45k.

Subject: My first post
Hi you all!
As you might know, I'm the one running the mailing list, and I would
just like to say hi to everyone now in the beginning of it all.
Hi!
There. :-)
Anyway, I'm Erik, I'm from Sweden, Europe, and I've been a Slowdive
fan ever since I first heard the "Slowdive" EP. My record collection
does not include all their albums, singles and EPs unfortunately,
though I've tried to find them, there's a couple missing. :-(
This mailing list is one out of seven than I've been crazy enough
to admin, so please remember when contacting me for some admin
stuff, to state which mailing list you're talking about. It can
be a bit of a hassle trying to figure that out otherwise. Thanks!
The Slowdive & Mojave discography is another project, and I'm well aware
that it's about time I updated them, so that will be my first job,
hopefully with your help. If you don't have the discography, please
let me know, and I'll email you a copy.
I haven't met the whole band. Only Neil and Simon, when they played
here in Sweden for the last time in February 1993, but they were
really really nice, and we chatted for a while. I'd love to hear
stories from you folks meeting the band!
Well, I guess that's it for my first post, and I hope you can all
enjoy and use this mailing list for all the money it's worth. :-)
Hopefully, we'll get the band (Mojave 3 that is) onto this list
in the near future, as they are connected to the net, but who knows,
right?
Stay safe,
//Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se)

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone by chance had an extra copy of the
"Slowdive" EP they'd be willing to sell. I have a copy of "Blue Day" but
I love Slowdive and am a completist and need to have the song "Avalyn
II"!
Oh, another thing: speaking of being a completist, I would also
like to get the Beach Song/Take Me Down flexi, but I don't have a
turntable... so if there's someone who has it and would be willing to
tape it for me if I send you a tape, please get in touch with me!
Thanks very much...

I just remembered... I've got some DJ only promos (never played) on
12 inch vinyl of a SLowdive EP (Sorry - I can't remember which one.
I'll check tonight when I get home)
I'm short of cash so if anyone would like to make me an offer.
I might be willing to make a swap.

Hey, what happened to the mbv list, anyway? I went home for
Christmas, came back and tried to resub, but the list doesn't seem to
exist anymore. Under what circumstances did its demise take place?

Hello, I just joined the list a few days ago. I really like Slowdive's
stuff, but the recent Mojave 3 release just doesn't make the mark. I feel
the production and just plain "good song" category just isn't there. I
don't know. Maybe I should listen to the album a few more times as I just
bought it today at the domestic price (poor and cheap is my name). I
curious, what do the fellow 'Divers think about my review.

I second that request for the first Slowdive EP "Slowdive".
My copy of the fine thing is the Swervedriver "Raise" misprint,
so I have yet to find the real one. :-(
I'd also like to take this opportunity to say hello to all the
new list members that were added today! Though there's a tough
match between the number of "live list" and "digest list"
subscribers, I hope we can get this list running at top speed.
Noticed also that some people on the 4AD-L list thought it was
a bad idea starting this list, ie. the "now when they're signed
to 4AD - they get their own list" - thingie. Well, I don't think
it's a bad idea (of course), and it's not just because they've
been signed to 4AD, which I think all of you out there agree
with me on. It's because they were Slowdive! And they should
have gotten their own list YEARS ago!
Well, that's what _I_ think. ;)

Back again! :-)
Just wanted to say that the Discographies for both bands are now available
on the WWW. The Mojave 3 one is version 0.1 (January 17th, 1996) only, so
don't expect too much from it :-). The Slowdive one is version 1.9 (newly
updated on January 17th, 1996).
Slowdive - http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/slowdive.html
Mojave 3 - http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/mojave3.html
(there are links to these pages from the Slowdive & Mojave Digest
page - http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/avalyn.html - as well.)
Of course they're also available in ASCII format, though at the moment
only by letting me know through email that you want them. That is -
email me (chief@lysator.liu.se) with requests, and you'll have the
info in your mailbox ASAP.
Oh, and let me know if you want me to post the discographies to the
list. The Mojave 3 one is pretty small, but the Slowdive is about 30k.
Time to hit the sack,

Hey man...I'm here :) Ye know, that fsa (further) was gone...guess you
have it by now anyway. Sorry about that. I'll make it up to ye somehow.
So - slowdive...guess Mojave 3 goes as well. Probably not news to most
of ye, but did you know that (and this is snarfed off the 4AD site,

flight from LA to NY before the holidays, has had a good recovery.
Mojave plans a European and US tour in spring '96.

sort of "founding members from the very beginning".
I began listening to SD when I saw Morningrise on 120 Minutes. I went to 3
of their gigs here in Sweden 92, and also their show in Stockholm 93. All
of them really good, esp the 92 ones.
Maybe i'm a dork, but i haven't bought Pygmalion. Can anyone give a short
review?

Yes, you're a dork. Buy it now... Review and review. It's brilliant.
None of the washy guitars on e.g. Souvlaki. But still guitars, more of a
minimalistic piece... Some folks thought this was ambient stuff, but
'tis not. I think e(? - go on, post it again...it was brill.) described
it as a guitar album...and I can agree to some extent. However, it's one
of the best albums ever to be released.
Just found a post I actually saved(!) (nice one Jens), where he
describes it like this:
Slowdive "Pygmalion"
--The wall of effects stripped bare into long, bleak soundscapes. Best
use of the echo box as instrument since God knows when.
Which more or less is what I was trying to say.
Cheers,

You are not a dork. WARNING,WARNING. If this person is talking about
einexile's review...be careful. Slowdive is defintely a strange band to
place in pigeon hole. I feel they will defintely comeout with a great
album again...but Mojave 3's freshman's attempt just doesn't make the mark.
If you have some money to blow...buy Pygmalion. I haven't heard it myself
and will not buy it until I see it in the used section at a deep discount.

Finally! Mojave 3 was mentioned in the Swedish morning paper
Svenska Dagbladet's friday edition "City" today! They were listed
under a column they call "records that weren't reviewed 1995"
that is written by reviewer Stefan Malmqvist. He writes:
"The cover looks monkey-boring, so that's probably the reason
why such a gem like Ask Me Tomorrow by Mojave 3 was overlooked.
Here we have beautiful valium-country in the spirit of Cowboy
Junkies, Mazzy Star, Drugstore and Tarnation."
Well that's it. Short and sweet.

I haven't been able to find anything with Mojave 3 yet! I asked at the
local "indie" record store about a month ago, and the guy who's in contact
with 4AD just said "who? how do you spell that? They haven't said anything
about that." So I have yet to find it. I've seen the "Love Songs On The
Radio" video though. Pretty Mazzy Star-ish, but I won't say anything more,
until I get the album. :-)

For those of you out there who haven't been able to track down the Mojave
3 record...one way you can get it is ordering it through the Internet.
If you telnet to "cdconnection.com" you can order it from there using a
credit card. The price listed is $13.34.
I'm sure there is a way to order it from 4AD as well, but I don't have
any addresses for that.

i apologize if this has already been covered; i'm behind on some mail (one

with the mbv and sound lists since zeek's t1 service turned back into a

hi. i like slowdive. a lot. i have spent the last three months wondering
why the hell i didn't listen to souvlaki very much when it first came out
because it is pure brill, if i may use that term. slowdive are my third
favorite band, behind verve and the beatles. must be all the rain over
there that causes you brits to come up with such amazing music. i dunno.
anyway, i heard just for a day in newbury comics in boston when it first
came out and bought it on the spot, and that was that. wfnx also played
'catch the breeze' occasionally. i still have the sticker somewhere from
jfad that said with this music you don't need drugs or something or other
like that. i am still looking to hear a copy of the live tape they used to
sell when they toured (brendon?) definitely pick up pygmalion and put it on
when it's raining. i know i keep saying this but it's the truth. i might be
selling my cd or vinyl copy soon if i keep going to record stores when i
should be saving for music equipment. if only god could beam me down a mint
collection of all the beatles lp's so i don't have to pay high reissue
prices for good vinyl...
excuse my lop-eared prose. i played with stereo flanging last night and i
think it's fried my brain.

I would call it Ambient in the sense that it's really a "floating" album.
Just listen to the first track, "Rutti" - a dreamy guitar together with
Neil's dreamy, almost whispering voice, with a lot of air between the
'pieces' that make out the first 3 minutes of the song. And the rest of
it's 10 minutes are just as dreamy, soft picking guitars, 'swooshy' hi-hat,
pillow-covered bass drum, Neil's voice echoing beyond the edge of the
earth, all of it pounding like a faint heartbeat. I picture myself on a
long straight road in the middle of one of those US desert-type-o-places,
driving along in my cabriolet, not a cloud in the sky, when I listen to it.
'Crazy For You', the second track, is just as "soft". 6 minutes without a
hard edge but something that sounds like an electrical charge once or
twice. Dreamy, echoing voices. 'Miranda' with it's lonely acoustic guitar,
Rachel's dreamy eerie voice, effects zooming from left to right..
Well, I'll stop now. I'd call it ambient, but not the 'dance'-type of
ambient that also is out there. It's different, but I like it.

For me, nearly the entire pleasure I got out of their
songs pre-Pygmalion was first and foremost the guitars.
The whole big, swirly, shoegazy mess. Morningrise!
She Calls! That's the sound I loved them dearly for. The vocals were fine,
but they must have been secondary to me, because Pygmalion
and the Mojave album don't affect me at all in the same way. <<
For me, the thing that set Slowdive apart from other shoegazers
was not only Neil Halstead's inventive guitar work, but the band's
beautiful and enchanting use of male-female unison vocals, drifting in
and out from between hefty slabs of flanging and chorus. The overall
effect of all this was, as we all know, wonderful!

Subject: Swervedriver / Slowdive connection
I met Swervedriver tonight, after a gig here in Linkoping, and talked
a bit about their latest stuff and more important the, by Neil and
Simon, reported fact that it was Swervedriver who got Slowdive signed
to Creation.
Steve (bass, vocals) looked at Adam (vocals, guitar) and said:
- 'umm.. well, that's for you to answer'.
Then Adam asked:
- 'who said that? Neil and Rachel?'
I replied:
- 'no, Neil and Simon, when I asked them after they played in
Stockholm in 93'
And Adam said:
- 'well I don't know, really. Did we?'
So the drummer, Jez said to Adam:
- 'yes, it was You! You were the guy who got them signed!'
And Adam replied:
- 'well, maybe it was our manager. Their [Slowdive] demo tape circulated
a lot around that time, and maybe he got hold of it and brought it
to Creation? I honestly don't know.'
So I dropped that subject and asked about the Slowdive/Swervedriver
misprint (Slowdive's first EP "Slowdive" was released in ? of copies
containing Swervedriver's album "Raise"). Adam said:
- 'yeah, I know about that. It's a really rare item you know?'
And I told him I had a copy of that one, so he asked:
- 'is it our cover and their EP on the CD or...'
So I replied:
- 'no, the other way around. Their cover and your album. When I bought
it and got home and listened to it, I said "whoa, this isn't Slowdive!"'
And Adam said:
- 'no way! Well, it's just like Creation. Misprints, whatever...'
So I didn't ask more about that, though I did ask Adam what he thought
about the Mojave 3 stuff and he said:
- 'I love it! It's a Cowboy Junkies thing you know?'
And Steve said:
- 'Mazzy Star kind of..'
Well, that's it for the Slowdive questions at least. :-) They [Swervedriver]
are signed to Geffen now, in case anyone was wondering, and their latest
album "Ejector Seat Reservation" is being released in the US by Geffen
in April, with a following tour by the band.
On a side note: they played a lot of songs from their first album, "Raise"
tonight, I think five or six ones, four songs from "Mezcal Head", and four
songs from "Ejector Seat Reservation". The reason they played so many from
"Raise", Adam explained, was because that album was never released in
Australia, and they recently played there, so they thought, why not play
some of our old songs, and rehearsed them again, and to their surprise,
they sounded really good! So they decided to include them on the rest of
their tour. :-)
Well, I guess that's enough babbling from me now.

Mojave had to put the obnoxious 3 on their name because there was
already a group named Mojave. I think someone said it was a German
band... anyway, I have no idea who they are.

Mojave without the 3, was the original name until someone else piped up that
Mojave was *their* name (I recall someone saying a German group, which I
haven't heard). So, in order to live in musical group naming harmoney, they
changed it to Mojave 3. I still don't know why they chose "3" as opposed to
"2" or "23".
It does seem rather odd that on the conclusion of producing their most
experimental and brilliant work (IMO _Pygmalion_), Creation would just flat
out and drop Slowdive. However, Oasis has created enough revenue for
Creation to enable them to ditch the rest of their roster I suppose.

Yeah, that's exactly what the guys in Swervedriver thought as well.
It's just so stupid. Creation used to be one of the top labels for
great music, and now they're nothing. That's what happens when the big
boys buy the small ones.

hi everyone....
.,...just got back from the book store where i read two!!! articles on
mohave3........one in A.P. (3 pages) - in the march issue; with ministry on
the cover.which had some pretty good picts in it.. and was a good
article...it gave the story of rachaels painful eardrum explosions (yes
plural!) : ( along with the basic background info etc......
and the other in the new issue of Raygun...with bald billy of the
smashing pumpkins on the cover...( not sure which issue it is..'tis the new
one though!) jsut a one page small -preview kinda article..in which the
mis-informed writer, made a comment about the main " trio of the band"
(slowdive) "ditching" the rest of the members to make this album.......
ha........! but, it did have a short segment of rachael telling about the
downfall of slowdive-which was interesting.
joe, still listening to this beautiful album over and over.

Yes, the tour is completely cancelled! Rachel told me that she is
still suffering from the bursting of her ear drum, when they were on
a flight to the USA. At the moment she can't do anything, but she

I know I have asked this before, but I never receive replies to the
email I send to the band, so I thought the list probably is a better
place: any chance of Mojave 3 playing in Sweden, if they're going to

Subject: mojave in america? slowdive again?
hey
first of all hello. this is my first post. after seeing posts regarding a
purported eurpoean summer tour i became curious; did they already tour
america...or would that follow a eurpean tour?
another item that i wanted some input on was the future of slowdive? i
realize that they have broken up but the ap interview suggested that neil might
not have completely satiated the electronic side of his creativity...not that i
could see how he ever could...it seemed however that souvlaki and pygmalion
were not exactly the band's most favored projects...of course much of that
could stem from the politics surrounding their releases. does anyone know what
plans they might have...honestly i could go for another slowdive or another
mojave...
what i'm watching:
streetcar named desire
withnail and i
usual suspects
the big sleep
what i'm reading
thomas wolfe-you cant go home again
what i'm listeing to:
mojave 3 ask me tommorrow
aram khatchaturian violin concerto
nick drake five leaves left/pink moon
future sound of london lifeforms

I recently saw a promo CD w/ 4AD artists, including Mojave [sic, not "3"] -
love songs on the radio.
You can find it in the 2nd hand shops of Stockholm. Not much interesting

It's easy to recognize, flashing orange, and in digipak. Something like 12
tracks, i think.
BTW, traffic is very low on this list. What's up???

This would be the "Facing The Wrong Way" promo methinks. It was given
away free at Virgin here in the UK...if you bought another 4AD release. I
must agree that it's not very interesting, with the obvious exeptions of
Liquorice and Tarnation...

Subject: ~so slow~
you're right erik...this list is almost pathetically slow sometimes!!!!
and no i'm not knockin it..just mentioning it.......
so as to start up a topic.......!!!!! i thought i'd ask a question
(and tell a story!) for all on the list to answer :
--if they feel inclined that is--
+what do you all think of the mohave3 album " ask me tomorrow" ?+
.......when i first got this , (i bought it at an import store the week it
came out), i asked the guy there if he'd heard it yet??..
he said it was "mazzy star-ish" which kinda made me cringe- not because i
dont like mazzy star...just because i hate it when a band sounds just like
another band, you now!!
so anyways.... i was kind of worried.....i'd only heard "love songs on the
radio" before then..on that 4ad promo. comp.. and at that point i wasnt even
sure if it was THEM!! becase i had no one to confirm it with.....(and yes, it
kinda does have that mazzy starish lazytwang to it here and there BUT
still........)
so after listenin to it the first time .. i wasnt sure what to think of it..i
thought to myself.. "no way, this is just too different..i definalty love
slowdive so much more than .... this", .....but..after the next
listening....i absolutely fell in love with it as well..the songs are so
honest, so undisguised....so sad, and so gorgeous all at the same time.
now many many many more times has it been played on my stereo....actually
almost every day; and i just wanted everyone to know that i think it is as
neil and rachael said......strong, upfront, straight-forward and the most
important part _beautiful_.
true its completely different..but listen to: dagger . miranda. here
she comes. visions of la. and all of us .....its all of there too. these
are slowdives kind of- "pre-mohave songs" to me - still its such powerfully
incredible music.. with both " bands" ..and all of us know this already,
thats why we love what they do so much.....
mohaves' music makes me think of warm summer nights..windows open, a soft
breeze blowing in......big manor in the country..with them playing for me in
the room adjacent.... and so much more.
looking forward to others thoughts on this lengthy spiel. : )
bye,
joe
