Crap! I'll be in Austin the first 2 weeks of March on business, looks like I just miss out! ARGH!
On that note, though...
Anyone have recommendations on places to check out whilst in Austin? Cool record stores, guitar shops, etc.? Thanks in advance...

yeah, is anyone planning on coming down for sxsw? i know if i didn't live
here i'd much rather travel to terrastock or the WMC than sxsw, but that's
just me. :)

well, the first thing you should do when you get here is pick up the latest
austin chronicle, available at any of the record stores listed below.
33 degrees is post-rock heaven, 43rd and guadalupe (you can't miss the
fasci-deco sign)
waterloo records has a great selection of pretty much anything you could
want, 6th and lamar, 474-2500
sound exchange (for old vinyl), 21st and guadalupe
technophilia/vinyl attic (former is all cd, the owners are into a LOT of
britpop plus sell lots of used cds, latter is all vinyl, mostly techno),
24th and guadalupe
i really wouldn't recommend any guitar shops here, most of them are
horridly overpriced, but if you REALLY want to see for yourself,
workhorse guitars is somewhere in the 5800 block of burnet rd.
one world music is above the continental club on south congress.
about the prices...you've been warned.
i don't know if black market music is still open.
also, while you're here, mothers cafe on 43rd and duval has fantastic
vegetarian food, threadgills has a killer steak (and chicken fried
chicken), there are a few really great mexican places in east austin. if
you wanna be tony, go to fonda san miguel for really good (and really
fucking expensive) interior mexican food, and if you plan on spending all
your money on records, in between sound exchange and technophilia on the
drag is a family-run chinese food stand where you can fill up for $2
(although i really don't want to know exactly what's in the chicken egg
rolls, they're good though.)
um, for any other suggestions i would ask ppl at either waterloo or 33
degrees (33 is my favorite record store in austin, i say go there first.)
austin is going through some growing pains right now thanks to the
evolution of 'silicon hills,' whatever that means, but it's still a great
town. californians are known for getting stuck here. enjoy! :)
hth,
joanna
oh, and if you're going to be here the first two weeks of march and you're
into film, you may be able to catch the beginning of the sxsw film festival.
back to cold war criticism

I like Screaming Trees too, but saying Slowdive sucks is just trying to
provoke an argument from a group of people who generally like them and
their genre of music, which, of course, includes MBV... immature!

Okay, here goes for a review!
> Are You Happy Now ? on Molesworth Records (7") '89
The only release of theirs I haven't heard, but can only imagine it's very
similar to the first LP...read on!
> Lovehappy on Subway Organization - SUBORG 12 (LP) Jul'89
Very fast noisy stuff! Girl vocals, as with the rest, but this is hyper
fuzzed out indiepop! Almost "punky" but not really. Not shoegazey either.
> Love In The Emptiness on Subway Organization - SUBWAY 27 (12") '90
Ahh....this is where it starts! A nice progression into slower noisepop
done in a nice shoegazing style....it's getting better!
> Liar on Cherry Red Records - CHERRY 113 (12") '90
This one is great as well - two of the best cuts from the forthcoming
album (Liar) plus a great cover of that Venus song, and an extra good
track as well...
> Things Come Apart on Cherry Red Records - BRED 92 (LP) '91
>
Now this is the pride of the band's releases!! Each one kept getting
better and better and then they stop after this?!?! What's up with that?!
This is a must have for any shoegazing fan....bendey whammybar action,
soothing girl vocals, noisy-as-fuck guitars.....yummmmm!! I'm working on
getting some of the last copies ever of this LP in stock for my
mailorder....details will follow in a month or so, if I do get them...

correction: usually MBV and Slowdive are considered to be in the same
genre, Screaming Trees are not, although, I like them a lot for good rock
music days... Mark Lanegan's smooth baritone is tops

So, has anyone seen this movie? Is it any good. If it contains the lush
atmospheric music of Slowdive, one could only assume that it might be
great... anyone?

Not a very good movie though. Lots of good music (from Mojave 3 to
Elastica to Lush to Radiohead to Suede) but the movie is rather
pointless itself. "L.A., it's like, Nowhere" - that sums it up!

Hi !
I think I'm correct in saying that this track was recorded in their front
room, while the snooker was on the telly - I guess they just decided to
include some background noise !

Does anyone know if they have other dates planned? Since they'll be in the
states.

Yes, this is true! They are, according to Rachel, definitely going
to play at the SXSW.

How does one get tickets in advance for SXSW events?
The Electric Lounge is a pretty small bar with a tiny
stage. Saw Mojave play there a couple years back..

well, i just found out about the Terrastock festival right here in San
Francisco where i live, and guess what, its sold out already, even though
it doesn't happen until april 17-19. not surprising considering the bands
who are playing: windy&carl, bardo pond, and some 30 others it looks like.
so ... if there is anyone out there who has tickets and can't go, or knows
of anyone out there who has extra tickets (2 preferably) PLEASE PLEASE
PLEASE contact me. this looks like an amazing music event, and i'm so
disappointed that i didn't find out about it earlier. oh well...and as
long as i'm writing i might as well mention that my "band" (i'm not sure
what the definition of a band is) so group, or rather project, well
there's a webpage which i have just redone where you can listen to some 14
full songs in real audio (the sound quality of realaudio is not that
great, but i can't afford the disc space of mpeg's right now and anyway i
haven't found a program to encode them yet), and some pictures and info
about our 2 self-released albums. the URL is
http://devbio-mac1.ucsf.edu/gage/gage4.html if anyone is interested. i'm
not sure what type of music people will say it is. i really like slowdive
(obviously), mojave3, MBV, adorable, FSA, etc. and sophia (the singer)
likes Faye Wong alot. she sings a couple songs in mandarin. sorry for the
shameful self-promotion (actually i'm really not trying to promote
anything per se, but since i made the webpage and put up the songs i
figured someone might as well listen to them ...). just read "el
persiguidor" by Julio Cortazar. very interesting take on music... alright,
gage (oh, i forgot to say, our band is called Daisies and Sunflowers)
