....Bardo Pond.......I just have comment that the song "Tommy Gun
Angel" from B.P.'s latest, Lapsed, is an amazing, amazing song. It's so
dreamy, it's so noisy....it's got to be one of my favorite songs. Now
that i think of it. The vocals in that song are a bit
Slowdive-Rachel-ish. But to those who've never heard it, don't rush out,
buy it and expect to hear Shine or something like that.
Bardo Ponds prev. album is also very good, maybe even better as an
album.
Anyone else want to comment on Bardo Pond?

Couple things.

1) Anyone know if any copies of "holding our breath" was issued with the bands autographs? I picked a copy up used years ago when I lived in Seattle and seem to see other copies floating around about the same time. Can't be sure though because I saw them play RKCNDY that same year. Any info? Thanks.

2) people who've been looking for out of print slowdive, check www.gemm.com. I've had pretty good luck with ordering stuff (selling too, but I got no slowdive for sale, sorry). Be sure to check on who you're ordering from. I'll order from most domestic places, but have not yet had the courage to order from a foreign seller.

Eh, Waterloo has a decent selection. I suppose one wouldn't expect to find the
latest Doldrums or AMP release at Tower Records... but on the other hand Tower
carries Glenn Branca while Waterloo DOESN'T. (What kind of crap is that?
Branca RULES!)

The BEST post-rock music store in Austin (as joroses mentioned) is 33 degrees,
no contest. You won't find much (any?) slowdive or MBV (because you can find
lots of their stuff at Waterloo) but 33 degrees has a TON of stuff you won't
find anywhere else in town. (Good stuff.) Any visitors should be SURE to spend
a good half-hour at 33 Degrees.

Beware: Austin's white-boy blues culture is really repulsive. Burn, Stevie, burn!

I meant to mention in my last mail, Avalyn 1.MP3 is now on my site:

http://www.flash.net/~agentc/slowdive.html

I'm not sure if I'll be able to put Avalyn 2 up on this other site or not - it
seems to have d/l problems there... we'll see.

The order after:

In Mind remixes
Outside Your Room b-sides
In Mind (non-remix)

and then I guess that's it - nobody requested Morningrise or 5ep (the bonus
tracks on the US release of Souvlaki).

Got Anakin - Neil is definitely morphing into Bob Dylan. The organ is very
nice. I'd like to see Neil do some symphonic work. The "dagger" cover is an
absolute insult to all slowdive fans everywhere in the universe. The
talentless hack singing on this track should be one of those techno-house
"divas". What crap. This track bugs me so much that I'm going to make MP3s of
the tracks I like and then RETURN this disc. Yuck. I plan on going to the
Mojave 3 show here and finding out what Neil thinks. Hell, if I were Mr.
Halstead I'd quit 4AD, even if it meant not being able to make a living.
That's how bad this cover is. Wow. A real slap in the face.

FUCK "THE HOPE BLISTER".

BTW - Dave Stack is pretty smart... FOR A RHESUS MONKEY WITH ADVANCED
PARKINSON'S. How can he claim to like slowdive then turn around and STEAL
their work to make his wallet fat?

Subject: Anakin rant

I listened to Anakin at the Virgin Megastore the
other day.

As for the Mojave song, its definately Dylanesque -
Neil's voice is even subtly inflected with a Dylan
accent. The chords aren't bad though.

Can someone explain this to me (maybe someone who is
touch with the band) - why they went from being so
innovative, devastatingly sublime to becoming a
classic rock tribute band? Is it some sort of "safe"
effort to make a living at music or some misguided
instinct?

I listened to Souvlaki & BlueDay again tonight (I was
in a mood to drown). The overdubs, tunings,
treatments, mixing, harmonies, dissonances are so
rich and maverick its got to be one of the most
important records of the decade for "pop/rock/alt" or
whatever category you would fit the sound into.

It's unfair to compare but I doubt Mojave will affect
us in the same way...

I just received a tape from a friend yesterday of demos from the Drop
Nineteens, and I have to say....what the hell was this band thinking by
not releasing this stuff?? There's well over a dozen songs on the tape,
none of which are on the albums, and they are the most shoegazing stuff
I've ever heard out of an American band. VERY Slowdive-esque, and ultra
fucking dreamy. Sooooooo good! I would release this stuff in a heartbeat,
and I don't get why they didn't do so! Crazy.
But I was just wondering - did anyone see them way back in the day
when they were doing this stuff, before any albums? I'm wondering if they
had pulled it off live, ifthey had the same lineup, etc.
And no, I don't want to trade a copy of this for your shitty
bootlegs, so don't ask! :)

Well then, why the fuck are you telling me about it then... =)

Just kidding (kind of)

Anyway...I did see them back in the day, but Deleware was already out. But,
how would I know if they played any of that stuff if I HAVEN'T HEARD
IT?!?!?!? BTW...yes, they were an amazing band at one time (before the
line-up change).

Just to make you cringe with jealous madness! hahahaha!!! Nah, if anyone
really wants a copy badly enough, I ain't gonna deny sharing this
shoegazing masterpiece. But the point was that I don't need any crappy-ass
bootlegs of some pseudo-cool band that sounds like airplane noise. And I
*knew* I would get offers for crap like that. But if anyone wants to throw
me a tape and money for return postage, of course I'll oblige...

Well if ya didn't recognize 'em from Delaware and they were brilliant
blisspop shoegazing delights, that would be some of this stuff! There's
even a freakin Beatles cover that is the most blissedout shogaze wispy vox
and swirling mass of guitars!! I didn't even recognize it til Mike pointed
it out to me! I forget which song it was though...

way as closedown, but busier and noiser. and from round '91. a first wave
US shoegazing band !!

Anyone curious about terrastock west ("the left coast ptolemaic
permabulation") would do well to check out the site for the UK 'zine
Terrascope (which is responsible for organizing the festival) at:
http://www.terrascope.org/home.html
Here you will find pages devoted both to the upcoming festival (April 17-19,
1998), and to the first terrastock event (April 25-27, 1997 in Providence,
Rhode Island). There are extensive reviews of the last years perfomance
including band lists & links, and helpful tips for anyone still heading to San
Francisco this coming April. Yes, tix are SOLD OUT, and no, there will not be
any additional tix made available... so keep your ears peeled for people
changing their festival plans. I was fortunate enough to buy a pair of tix in
January, but there were already less than 30 available at the time, so it sold
out quickly over a month ago.

This years confirmed band list:

Alchemysts
Alva
The Azusa Plane
Bardo Pond
Masaki Batoh & Michio Kurihara of Ghost
Bevis Frond
Clockbrains
Cul de Sac
Damon & Naomi
Mick Farren & the Deviants
50 Foot Hose
Alastair Galbraith
Green Pajamas
Grimble Grumble
The Lothars
The Loud Family
Major Stars
Loren Mazzacane Connors
Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows or Minus Five)
Medicine Ball
Roy Montgomery
Mooseheart Faith Stellar Groove Band
Mountain Goats
Mudhoney
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Olivia Tremor Control
Pelt
Primordial Undermind
Tom Rapp
Silver Apples
Kendra Smith
Spaceheads
Stone Breath
SubArachnoid Space
V Majestic
Brother JT & Vibrolux
Windy & Carl

Quite a list! And for fans of Bardo Pond (I've seen them both in Seattle and
Coney Island, NY... and they're simply amazing live) there's hope that they'll
play an additional set with NZ's Roy Montgomery. An amazing guitarist with
whom they recorded an LP entitled "Well Oiled" (under the name Hash Jar Tempo
on Drunken Fish Records), which I highly recommend.
On a final note, the psychadelic sounds of Brother JT and Bevis Frond are

It definitely is fantastic. Wish they would come over here and play some
gigs or festivals, but as they're pretty unknown in these parts of the
world (so far) I doubt it. :( I'll post a translation of my review of
Lapsed if anyone's interested.

Talking about other bands - I just listened to the Dutch/British band
"Donkey" and their album 'Stroke My Wings Gently' - now there's an album
with diverse songs and styles on it (everything from jungle to acoustic
and dreamy stuff), but two songs - 'Space Wind Dynamics' and 'Kissy Kissy
Traction' - are pretty darn good. The first is just filled with disted
guitars and a bass which go on and on - over and over again - behind the
light and dreamy vocals, and with a Manchester (tm) drum beat added it's
a beaut. A lighter MBV perhaps? The other is more like a mix between
that lighter MBV and early Lush. Gorgeous.

Sadly these two songs are the only ones on the album that sound this way -
there are a few other good ones on it, but even though they are good,
they are not even close.

Anyone heard this band? Comments?

//Erik <chief@lysator.liu.se>

P.S. They actually played a song from that Transister album I mentioned
here before - two days ago on the national swedish radio! Cool. D.S.

The first album is very different from the new one. It has more loud
Pixies/Fall-like sounds and less dreamy sounds. Yes, there was also
a wacky jungle song on that album which was pretty cool.

I saw them play here in Houston a few months ago (the guy who runs
Loveletter Recordings works at the local indie record store). The
lead singer kept putting down the U.S. and raved on how great Amsterdam
was. They had a cello player on-stage for a lot of the songs.
Most of the set was pretty basic hard psych-flavored rock. But there was
one song that sounded exactly like MBV's 'Soft as Snow'. Very cool
"glide" guitar on that one!

Sad to hear this - you better get yourself another one. You can always
check the digest archives (sorry, I haven't updated it for a while
because of my muscle injury - but I will asap) from an Internet cafe'
to keep up with the list, can't you?

... well, for as long as it takes!

Stay safe,
