Another westernlike band is Mazzy Star. They have made two records:"She
hangs brightly"
and "So tonight that I might see" (1990 and 1993 Capitol
Records). Actually they are a lot better than Mojave 3, the vocals by Hope
Sandoval is really cool, mixed with a bit of noise and lots of slideguitar.
Lots of atmosphere and melancholy...
They are playing at Roskilde Festival in Denmarks this year, so everybody:
check them out!!! (By the way the festival is sold out, and it is not be
possible to buy tickets at the gates, so dont go there unless you have a
ticket by now!)

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT *LYSATOR*
----------------------------------------

My Internet provider "Lysator" is moving their equipment around the last
week of JUNE - that's right, in about two weeks. This means the following:

1. All email sent to me or any of the mailing lists at Lysator will _not_
be distributed (not to me, or the mailing lists) before Lysator is back
up again at their new location.

2. All email sent to me or any of the mailing lists at Lysator will be
_saved_ on another server, and held there until Lysator is back up
again at their new location - and _then_ distributed (to me and to
the mailing lists).

3. This means that there are no problems sending mail to me or to the
lists, only that a slight delay (only a couple of days, I hope) will
occur before the mail is distributed.

4. I guess we all will notice when this happens, and when everything is
back up again (can you say "flooded mailboxes"...)

Oh and the WWW servers will of course also be down during this time.

Stay tuned...

Subject: Silvania

Hi folks,

Well, for the continuing edification of the list I can report that
Silvania's "Paisanje III" arrived from Spain on Tuesday 4th of this
month, so it took 2-3 weeks to arrive. This seems pretty reasonable to
me, and Elefant seem from the literature accompanying it to be well
organised etc. Their badges are nothing to write home about, but the
postcards boast an excellent design and are well worth 50ptas apiece!

And the music? Not bad at all. After two listens I'm unsure whether
it'll be something I'll come back to a lot, but it's decent ambient
guitar pop (generally somewhere between 5ep and "Pygmalion" in deference
to us being Slowdive fans) with a good musical range. It's neither run of
the mill nor genuinely groundbreaking stylistically. I seem to remember Wilder
describing it as "sweet pornography", which is maybe stretching it, but
I'm not one for the adjectives. Sorry if this isn't very helpful, but
my brain is fried from academic work at the moment and I don't feel like
writing a proper review.

They have another album out now or very shortly. I'll post the title
and cost up some other time. Worth considering.

Cheers,

They have a new album "Delay Tambor".

Sadly i don't have it still. All i know is that it's a kind
of tribute to Silvania, with ambient luminaries, like Autechre!!,
playing Silvania's songs.

Another group you guys should check out is "Labranford." Their music is
very ambient guitar stuff with heavily reverbed vocals. It sounds like
it was all recorded in a cathedral. Their songs sound like the songs
"Losing today" and "Albatross" by Slowdive. Very introspective and moody...

Sweet pornography, it is. Or at least it is that way for me.

Paisaje III:
-"Eva sobre Eva" -trans. "Eva over Eva", the lyrics of the song
are metaphoras about lesbians, eg: "y el tiempo ilumina sus
rostros excitados,...sus cuerpos de ninas"
(trans." and the
time lights her stired faces...her girl's bodys"

-"Nudo de cielo y delfin" ("Knot from heaven and dolphin")
"...huele a tu cuerpo...en mi sed, en mi lengua...arde
siempre..."
(trans.: "Smells like your body...in my thirst,
in my tongue...always burn..."
.

Actually is very difficult to understand all what they say.
But in "En cielo de Oceano" comes all the lyrics:

-"Oval": "Acaso no escuchas batiendose bajo el cielo de acuario
anunciandote que mi amor viene al fin por ti. (t: "
Perhaps
you don't listen flapping under the aquarium's heaven
announcing that my love comes at last for you".

-"
Maldoror":"El caos sabe tu nombre lo se por tus ojos por tu
boca por tu sexo por tus alas".(t:"The caos knows your name I
know by your eyes by your mouth by your sex by your wings"

-"
Aura y tu" ("Breeze and you"): "Las mas bellas rosas arden bajo
amor" ("The beautiest roses burn under your foot and under
the roses burns mi head involve in thousand curves in light in
blues my soul is a white serpent you rise and substractme the
soul and in exchange you give me silence and water's vapor if
you breathe you're God if you suspire a demon of Love")

Some days ago a friend was telling the wondrous that is to
make the love listening Silvania, i haven't done it still but when i
listened to them i always relation it with these sensations. Maybe is
just my subjectivity inside.

But i believe that inclusive their lyrics are sweet
metaphoras about love and sex, about a SWEET PORNOGRAPHY.

All you that love slowdive's sound so much, should listen
this beauty, really should.

Take care.

I've never thought of Labradford as being much like Slowdive at all, except
for the use of copious amounts of reverb in the manner of _Just For A Day_.
I don't know which of their albums you're thinking of, but the fact that
they use keyboards and that the guitars still sound like guitars makes them
a lot different. Their music sounds much more ominous too.

I just have the track listing of the last silvania cd "
Delay
Tambor", which includes silvania's songs played in different versions
by some ambient luminaries like seefeel, autechre, scanner etc.
The new disc also includes 3 new songs by Silvania.

So here is the track listing -taken from a spanish zine, Spiral-:

01: Eesal
02: Ov : Locust mx
03: Ry I : Scorn mx
04: 3lc : Seefeel mx
05: ArAng : Scanner mx
06: Bengala
07: LBelm : Autechre mx
08: Arqueopteryx

Most of the songs are from "
En Cielo de Oceano": Ov = Oval,
3lc = Trilce, ArAng = Arcangel, LBelm = Un bosque en la memoria.
And one from "
Paisaje III": Ry I = Raymi I.
The others are the new silvania's songs.

The cover versions are supposed to be in radical diferent
versions than they appeared on the silvania's discs.

About the 3 new tracks the Spiral's writer says:

"
...now their soul has changed to the investigation, the
search, and even an evident hedonist side that they're going
to continue exploiting -see the new maxi "Galax Trax"-. I also
believe that Mario and Coco (*) have learnt that is preferable
to fascinate and to result interestings, juicys,
unforgettables, to leave a trace more creative than
sentimental."

-(*): Mario and Coco are Silvania.

Just to say that if you have a doubt about what i was telling
you about silvania all the time, seefeel, autechre and the other
great bands that appears on Delay Tambor help me to continue saying:

You really should hear the Silvania's exquisite beauty!!
You really should!

Subject: IMPORTANT NOTE regarding Lysator

** IMPORTANT NOTE **

Lysator (the Internet provider where this mailing list and web-pages reside)
------- will move their equipment starting June 26th (at 6pm CET) (that's
on wednesday this week) and they plan to have everything back up
again (and I say again, _plan to_) the following weekend, that is
June 29th or June 30th.

If you read the previous note regarding this, you remember that I said
that _all messages sent to a Lysator-address_ (to the mailing list, to
me, etc) will be _saved_ (though there will probably be problems with
that too for an hour or two during the move) and distributed when
everything is back up again.

* So, either you stop sending mail to the mailing list or me for these
few days, or you continue to send mail, hoping for the best. This is
entirely up to you. But remember that I will not be able to reply to
any messages before June 29th or 30th (earliest date).

My band was thinking about doing one, but decided against it.
This was when we had few songs, but show where we were expected to play

i'm sorry that i am unable to provide you with lyrics...i'm

However, I did want to stir up a little conversation on this

Has ANYONE heard anything about this brilliant trio since
the shaving tour...the 'waters' have been a little calm and
i'm curious to see if anyone has heard ANYTHING new? I'm
anxious to see when they'll be releasing some new material.
When I spoke to Neil @ the show, he said that in October (?)
they'd be releasing something new...any confirmation on
that-anyone?

well, it's obvious that I haven't anything relevant to
say...just wanted to promote some activity on this list, for
a change.

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer, take care!

If it's a two song remix thingie then it must be the In Mind remixes. I
LOVE this disc! I mean it's not normal slowdive stuff. In my mind (ha
ha) these versions are much more interesting than the original version of
In Mind. The second of the two mixes is simply beautiful. Get it.

Or, if it's just the Alison 2 song promo then I'd say forget it. Those
are the only 2 song singles i can think of by slowdive.

I believe Neil is probably right about that. I received news that he is
currently in Spain, working on their next album - though I don't know if
Rachel and the rest of the band is with him or not. Hopefully, Rachel
will post some news to the list soon.

Something more (at least to me) interesting regarding Slowdive is that
the soundtrack to the film "
I'm The Elephant, U Are The Mouse" which
you all probably know about, that was going to be released (& the film)
ages ago, was actually never released (not the soundtrack, and not the
film). The film has been shown at various small film festivals though
(even one in northern Sweden!).

_But_ now, the director tells me that he has recut the film - and it
is ready for release, and with it, the Soundtrack too! For those of you
who don't know about it - Neil Halstead wrote the music for the film,
all original, inspired by the film. I'll post every piece of news I
get about this to the list.

In addition to this, Neil is also going to be working on the director's
next film, called "
Always There Baby" which they apparently will start
shooting this fall. More news will follow...

Sorry for being so quiet lately by the way - this list _does_ need some
activity!

Well, this is what I've got (it's not everything, but at least it's
something):

--------
Slowdive
--------

Song: Slowdive

I hear your voice
but it can't bring me back
I'm dreaming of all the things
I ever thought I had
I'm pushing down
I'm diving deep
Yeah Slowdive to my dream
I'm feeling good yeah
I'm feeling free

Slowdive, you can't touch me now

I close my eyes
and let the ground slip
from my mind
I'm falling now
I'm diving now
I'm gliding in the sky
gracefull birds will whisper
as I sadly pass them by
he's feeling good yeah
he's feeling free

Slowdive, you can't touch me now...

Song: Avalyn I

silence grows
my feelings flow
I'm dreaming now
of all the things I know
I'm here on my own

-----------
Morningrise
-----------

Song: Morningrise

I cross the field
and watch the sun go down
a million people clap
it makes me frown
looking round
I see you slip away
you seem more
beautiful than yesterday

the devil takes
my mind but I don't care
he gives me all his love
he gives me air

don't pay it any mind
I'm losing all the time

Song: She Calls

she calls across the sea
through autumn rains
she screams
she howls in ecstacy

she calls
she calls thro wind and rain

Song: Losing Today

in a corner
she sits and waits
she's waiting for
her heart to break

it says it all

don't lose today

------------------
Holding Our Breath
------------------

Song: Catch The Breeze

feels like all the days are gone
just catch the breeze
you know you've had your fun
rain washes waves down

and I, I want the world to cry
and I, I watch the winds you fly
you can't believe in everything
you can't believe it all

hey are you feeling something new
just watch the way
it helps in all you do
the breeze it blows
it blows everything

and I, I want the world to cry
and I, I want the sun to shine
you can't believe in everything
you can't believe it all

Song: Golden Hair

lean out your window
golden hair

I heard you singing
in the midnight air
my book is closed
I read no more

watching the fire dance
on the floor
I've left my book
I've left my room

for
I've heard you singing
through the gloom
singing and singing
a merry [...?...]

lean out your window
golden hair

Song: Shine

shine through the light
so my thoughts won't
have to fight
for your love
just to see you in me
hurts too much

mind fills with the thought
love you till I caught
fish in the sky
impossible to fly
see you walk away
why can't you stay and

shine through the light
so my thoughts won't
have to fight
for your love
just to see you in me
hurts too much

high from above
I see the words of love
decay to the ground
betray what i've found

Song: Albatross

looks like rain again
can't remember
can't remember
what I'm missing

I'm feeling now
I'm missing
wishing
for the sun

feels like yesterday
I can't believe
can't believe
it's true

don't turn away
you're feeling
feeling
something new

looks like rain again
can't remember
what I'm missing

I'm feeling now
that I'm wishing
for the sun

feels like yesterday
but I can't believe
it's true

don't turn away
are you feeling
something new

Outside Your Room EP
--------------------

Song: Alison

listen close and don't be stoned
I'll be here in the morning
cause I'm just floating

while your cigarette still burns
your messed up world will thrill me
alison I'm lost

alison I said we're sinking
there's nothing here but that's okay
outside your room your sister's spinning
but she laughs and tells me she's just fine
I guess she's out there somewhere

and the sailors they strike poses
tv covered walls answer slowly
with your talking and your pills
your messed up life still thrills me
alison I'm lost

alison I'll drink your wine
I'll wear your clothes when we're both high
alison I said we're sinking
but she laughs and tells me it's just fine
I guess she's out there somewhere

Song: So Tired

so tired, it's so hard to feel
but it's alright cause I believe
and I guess i'll dream
I guess I'll take the time to dream
it's alright, I'm just sleeping

slow down
it's just always on your
slow down
it's just always on your...

so tired
suicide is gone yeah
but it's alright
cause I believe
and it's just a dream
it's always on your
it's just a dream
it's just always on your mind

Song: Souvlaki Space Station

closed doors brings open minds
{and I don't want to see you}
see you smile, inside
{and I don't want to know you}
faces, and I've fallen
{and I don't want to hear you}
wonder why I'm here now

in asylum, don't you see?
in asylum don't you see

doors close and feelings flow
{and I don't want to know you}
through my mind I feel his...
{and I don't want to hear you}
pictures and I've fallen
{and I don't want to know you}
wonder why I'm here now
{I promise to be near you}

curse your soul, I don't want to know you
and I, curse your soul I don't want to know you

Song: In Mind

watch you while you're thinking
wonder what's inside
why you're always sinking
am I in your mind?

Song: Country Rain

she wakes up on her own
and opens her eyes
the sun tries to burn through the pain
she still feels inside

I've seen you fall apart
I know you wouldn't care
but I wish you were mine

she looks into his face
just to be near him
and the clouds come round again
nothing's changed

I saw you for a lifetime
I know I shouldn't care
but I wish you were mine
and the rain keeps on falling
in my heart

I've always thought this word was "
rain"...

a merry air

For the complete lyric (the song doesn't include everything from the
original), try finding James Joyce's "
Chamber Music", from which Golden Hair
is taken.

spiral (99lear@lab.wmich.edu i think) has nearly all of the official
lyrics and has always sent them out to anyone who wants them. Must not be
checking email at the moment. Probably will eventually though and
all of everyone's lyrical problems will be solved.

Sorry but I have to disagree. I followed a thread about Closedown on the 4AD-L
list about a year ago and got my sister to find and buy it for me in Boston.
But listening to it, in my ears, this is definitely not Slowdive. Perhaps
somewhat like Slowdive around the time of Pygmalion, but IMHO I don't count
that one as a true Slowdive release. More like "
between Slowdive and Mojave 3"
release.

So now you all know - Slowdive for me is everything they released before
the "
5EP" EPs. :-)

The closest I have have heard bands come to the Slowdive sound - comes
from two bands, one is called "
Bizarre" (from Estonia, though they don't
sound like that today unfortunately) and the other is called "
Aquadays"
(from Sweden). None of these bands are signed, but have released demos and
tapes. If anyone wants more information, let me know and I'll post it.

You're absolutely right. I have several versions of the lyrics (from
different people) and even though one claims that it is the original
work straight from the band, it still has errors here and there, and
didn't notice that one. Sorry about that.
