You should also check out Bowery Electric. Layered guitars and breathy
vocals. They have a 2-cd remix album out called Vertigo. It has remixes
by Third Eye Foundation, Witchman, and others. I got this about 2 weeks
ago, and it hasn't left my cd player since!!!

I heard they disbanded. Some of the guys formed a band called Hair &
Skin Trading CO. I never heard anything with them. Opinions?

Yeah, I got just one song, "Arc-Lite", by Loop on a compilation, but
it's great.

Like a goth/grind version of Spacemen 3. Aw, that was a bad analogy...
I would buy a full album by them if I got recommendations on which one
to look for. Any suggestions???

Look no longer - Firstly Hair and SKin Trading CO is pretty good. there
first disc is incredible. I haven't heard the third and the latest. My
favorite Loop disc is Fade Out. Get the version with the five bonus tracks.
These are particularily excellent with Mother sky and thief of fire. Their
last disc is pretty good to. Arc lite is excellent and their are more tracks
like it.

Windy and Carl albums are actually pretty easy to get ahold of, try
Parasol Records at www.indies.com or Vinyl Ink Records, the address of
which escapes me at the moment, and Darla Records also stocks most of
thier releases, once again, address unknown. "Portal" chronicles some of
thier early tapes and hard to find songs, a good place to start.
"Drawing of Sound" is also an excellent way to go. As a point of
inconsequence, Flowchart's new album "Cumulus Mood Twang" is highly
recommended. Dancey space-pop drone, way good.

The Main 6 cd box is a reissue of all the original eps-
CORONA
TERMINUS
MASER
HALOFORM
KOAN
NEPER
I haven't actually seen the set up close, but I would say that unless
you are a collector then don't bother. The HZ two cd set has all the
same recordings for a lot less money.

And don't forget upcoming Bliss Out's:

Sweet Trip -- "Halica"
Coming out March 3rd, I *think* you guys will like. ;)

Speaking of Darla releases, I would *have* to recommend Colorfilter to
y'all. Darla co released this with Fuzzybox. Very sweet, blissful
electronic pop, some MBV shoegazy sounds that I'm sure you guys would
love. Anyway here is the actual bit straight from Darla Records about
Color Filter.

COLOR FILTER Sleep In A Synchrotron Fuzzy Box DRL-054 LP 8.00/CD
10.00
LP Limited to 500

Color Filter is the bliss inducing, trance/drum & bass oriented,
electronic pop creation of our man Ryuji in Tokyo. Ahi of INCENSE lends
her coy and comforting vocal to four tracks. Suddenly, the new-for-'98,
Kevin Sheilds school of drum & bass styled pop has come from all
corners.
It is as unexpected as it is delightful: As heard on Little Darla Volume
8, Sweet Trip, Junior Varsity km, Technicolor, Four Head and now Color
Filter, all working indvidually, have begun to signify the coming of a
new sound. It's a natural evolution combining sampling technology, dance
beats and lovely pop melodies. This is Color Filter's debut full length.
Previously, Color Filter has released a 12" on Black Bean and
contributed
to the Space Voyage compilation, also on Black Bean, the Pop Jingu
compilation on Sonorama and the Pop Machine compilation on Cowly Owl
(France).

NOPE, I can honestly say that I would rather NOT hear good music like that on
TV commercials. I can see where you're coming from, but I think it cheapens
the music, a bit.

May 17th '92 Seattle @ Rock Candy
May 21st '94 Toronto @ Lee's Place
And am looking to trade dubs to get more!
(does anyone know the set lists of the above two?)
If you're interested and can help me make my collection bigger
e-mail me personally! Thanks!

Oh, and is anyone willing to audio dub the following EP's for me?
(I'd be more than happy to supply the cassettes and cover postage)
"Morning Rise", "Blue Day", "Holding Our Breath", "Outside Your Room".
Thanks!

for me it depends on how tasteful the commercial is. like the volkswagon
that used lush's "sweetness and light" -- now *that* was nice use of a good
song.

The 6cd box set is the original version of the album Hertz. It came out
as six seperate twenty minute singles that you had to collect (the sixth
one came with a box to hold all the others in). It is limited edition
(though i'm not sure what it's limited to) and you should be able to get
the it for under forty dollars, though i would recommend buying the 2cd
version instead simply because it's a hell of a lot easier to listen to
(you don't have to change cd's every twenty minutes!). It's a very good
album and i'd recommend it to anyone who's into experimental drone type
stuff. All the sounds on the album (and all Main albums for that matter),
excluding sparse use of vocals and percussion, are created using only guitars.

For those of you intersted in guitar oriented ambient music, check out
Kranky band "Stars of The Lid". They have three albums, "Music For Nitrous
Oxide", "Gravataional Pull Versus The Desire For Aquatic Life", and "The
Ballasted Orchestra". They take the "run your guitar through 15 effects
pedals and a signal processor, and it doesn't matter what you play"
apporach to music.

Also, in the non-guitar oriented ambient spectrum, check out Sonic Boom (as
well as Kevin Shield's, Eddie Provost's, andKevin Martin's) side project -
"Experimental Audio Research". they're probably my favorite ambient outfit
of the last few years. It's very electronic oriented stuff. Mainly Sonic
messing around with his multitude of vintage noise makers.

Just another little tidbit on the VW commercial, they also used clips
from Ivy, Moonpools & Caterpillars and Cranberries. When I first saw
those commercials, they totally caught me off guard. Likewise, I heard
Pale Saints' cover of Kinky Love during a Real World episode on MTV-US
(yeah, lemme alone already). Or how about that Fruitopia commercial
using Cocteau Twins as background music (the official CT website uses the
clip at the intro page).

What's my point? blah blah blah

Oh yeah, the Oslo MP3 conversion is complete. I'm still waiting for more
details on how to work this thing out. Be patient ... they'll get out
there soon enough.

Nope.

Not to many big bands come to central Canada where I live. I did miss a
"Stars of the Lid" show a short drive away last summer, because it wasn't
publicized, and I didn't find out about it until after.

I'm not sure if i'd call any of these bands "big" but too bad. You missed
(in my opinion anyway) some really great shows. And that Spectrum show had
to have been a once in a lifetime chance. He didn't look to great (Sonic
Boom). He'll probably overdose on heroin before the next tour :( .

Subject: Hello

I somehow stumbled upon the digest site for this mailing list and was
impressed with the content of the posts. Being a pretty big fan, I
decided I ought to join up.

I noticed on one of the old posts regarding music and commercials that
Tortoise is used by someone. What commercial and what song?

Also, someone listed the releases from Darla's "Bliss Out" series.
Assuming you (the person who posted) have them all, which ones do you
suggest? I do the buying for a record shop and have them in the bins
but have yet to check them out. Plus, I'm always short on money as I've
always got hundreds of records to buy.

Lastly- has anyone heard of Monaural? I don't think they're around
anymore, but they were a Michigan band that put out a really great 12".
They sounded a bit like Bark Psychosis, Verve, and Slowdive fused
together with their own bits.

Hellllllo and take care!
