I have the Sunday flexi, but I can't say the quality is any good. First
off, it's a thin piece of plastic that needs to be weighted down with a
penny (like those records they used to attach to cereal boxes). Not to
mention, it doesn't sound great in my opinion, and I doubt you could
clean this one up much at all. The recording itself sounds like a 6th or
7th generation copy.

Oslo's excellent - this could be great to burn to CD, but it's not a long
set (roughly 35min). I don't think it's necessary to use a 4-track or
DAT, but if someone has Sound Forge or even Cool Edit, they could clean
it up. It should be fine to record straight from the deck to your HD via
soundcard line-in (44.1khz/16-bit/stereo). MPEG-3 compression might be a
consideration as an alternative to CDA format. That way, you could fit
significantly more data on the CD (think of 160 4min. tracks on a single
disc) and virtually no sound quality is lost, but you're limited to
running the CD from your computer only. Well, whatever, it's up to
whoever has time.

About the Sunday Flexi...what I was getting at is that the tape I have
sounds fine. I have had tapes of it where it sounded all "wavy"..but this
one sounds like a normal 7".

About the Oslo tape...here's a quote from Frank Zappa "..cd is a less
forgiving medium. If the master is fucked up in any way its going to
show..." All I was getting at is that whoever transfers this to cd might
want to do a little work on it first. For instance I redid my tape so that
the bass wasn't so dominating.
I heard about something that might do the trick...record the tape onto a
high quality video tape. This uses the full length of the video tape for the
sound and supposedly the results are extremely good.

These songs appeared on a compilation cassette which came out before the
flexi, and probably sounded bettr, so the copy you have may be from that
compilation....

NO NO NO NO!!! do not use mpeg-3 for this. why would you want to degrade
the sound more? go full on at 16 bit, 44.1 KHz uncompressed.

also, if anyone had 2 copies of the flexi.. altho i have never tried it, i
pretty shure it would sound better if you glued the flexi very carefully,
and very tightly to something very hard and flat, like a piece of glass.
of course 2 flexis would have to be sacrificed since it's double sided.

Does anybody know how to convert MPEG-3 into MPEG-2. I can play MPEG-2 but
not 3 and I was wondering if it was possible to convert 3 into 2.

Subject: Slowdive Bootlegs @ CD's (fwd)

Greetings all,

OK, here's my offer to you all... I have a digital 16 track
recording studio which could be used for mastering and compiling either :

1. A collection of all slowdive material (which I own all normal
release LP's and EP's + the Sunday Flexi)
2. Any good bootlegs.

I don't have a CD burner, but could compile the whole thing onto
a DAT tape which I would then send to someone who had one. I believe
there is someone on this list who is from Adelaide who owns one, which
would help as i live in Melbourne.

I ask no money, but only to whoever owns a close to original copy
of the bootlegs to contact me.

My thoughts for the compilation CD's (any flames welcome)

Disk 1 :
Beach Song
Take Me Down
Slowdive
Avalyn
Morningrise
She Calls
Losing Today
Shine
Golden Hair
Albatross
So Tired
Some Velvet Morning
In Mind
Good Day Sunshine
Missing You
Country Rain

Disk 2: (remixes CD)

Avalyn II
Catch The Breeze (Holding Our Breath mix)
Mousaka Chaos
In Mind (Bandulu Remix)
In Mind (Reload Remix)

For the bootleg CD, the best bootlegs I have are :

Bochum 18/2/92 - Quality is not good, but you get Song 1, Bleed, Silver
Screen and Joy, which are all excellent songs. I don't have the full
bootleg either, missing Avalyn and She Calls (Anyone)

Oslo 18/10/93 - Quality is very good, i'm sure someone has a near
perferct copy of this.

Well there are my offers put on the table. Feel free to let me
know your thoughts.

Anthony.

This is a really good idea. I did a trade for a cd someone made awhile back
with all most of the b-sides and the quality was amazing. Two 74 min. cds
could be filled with all the tracks mentioned (though not as listed), and
rare live tracks could also be added. I don't know too much about this kind
of thing but I believe that it is after 75 min. that the sound quality on cd
starts to suffer.

All the live cuts mentioned do appear on other tapes besides Bochum. I have
"Bleed" recorded in Alsdorff which sounds better, but someone would have to
figure out a way of taking down the bass distortion.

I definately think as far as the live stuff goes, we need to have good
recordings of Bleed, Colours in Spin, and any other non-released tracks
there may be floating around on live tapes...

I agree with the non released, hard to find tracks, colours in spin,
bleed, joy, silver screen, I think otherwise it will look like
another David Stack compilation, and we all don't want that. I do
think the OSlo version of Machine Gun should be on it somewhere
because it sounds soooo good. I don't know if we could somehow fix
or take out the high feedback noise you hear when Neil sings the
chorus to Machine Gun or not though. Take me down, and Beach song,
and maybe even the audio version of Poetic frenzy on the second
disc(which I have if someone wants that on there.)

Hello everyone,

My name is Mitch, and I am starting an E-zine called Gravity Probe. The
zine is going to feature, but will not be limited to, dreampop/shoegazer
type music. We will also feature experimental/spacerock, gothic, and
indie-pop form all over the world. We will also have band interviews and
live show and record reviews.

I am looking for any bands or artists who would like to contribute
anything. You can send tapes/cds of your band/recording project, press
kits, photos and bio...If you send it, I will definately review it in the
zine.

I'm also looking for any recent live show reviews, or band interviews.

The first digital issue will hopefully be out in early December. If you
would like to contribute anything, please email me at: gravityprobe@usa.net

Thanks,
-Mitch

They're a guy/girl duo who have been around for a few years and play some
nice stuff - hate to liken them to anything, but they are somewhat dreamy
and have good pop sensibility!

To the best of my knowledge, the unreleased tracks are Beach
Song, Take Me Down, Song 1, Bleed, Silver Screen, Joy and Colours In
Spin. Shine was at one stage called 'Song 1' for the BBC session. The
last five mentioned I have only seen in a live format, but I think they
may have been recorded for the Souvlaki sessions and shelved.

My theory is that Neil started to change his direction away from
the wall-of-noise style (as evident in these songs), before the eventual
recording of Souvlaki. And then changed again (for 5 EP) and again (for
pygmailion). Following this line of thinking, I can't see Mojave 3
sticking to the acoustic vein for much more than one or two more albums.

Anthony.
