I suppose I am the only one here who actually doesn't care much for the
Mojave 3 album...I love everything Slowdive ever did (except maybe Some
Velvet Morning, which isn't the greatest, IMO) but I gotta say I just
didn't warm up to that Mojave 3 album...perhaps I should give it another
listen, since last time I heard it, it was before the album was even
released, but I have a feeling I still won't like it as much as any
Slowdive material. I also admit that some of Pygmalion isn't really for me
either, but the other half is some of the most tremendous stuff they have
done, so on the whole, it's a great album...babble babble....

To this very day, it saddens me that Slowdive's effects pedals are
hiding somewhere in the far reaches of Neil and Christian's closets.
When you have such a beautiful ear for sound, and genius ideas to make
layers of fuzz, you just don't throw that away!
I absolutely hated Mojave 3 when I first heard it. I wanted Souvlaki
part 2, or them to go back to their early "Blue day" days. Our only
hope is that Neil will keep changing and drift Mojave's lush sound
back towards some form of delayed noise. I must admit, if you put
AMT on quite often, it does grow on you. You can really get a feel
for how beautiful Rachel and Neil sound together, no matter what the
circumstances are. However, it was the guitars, and the simple
layered noise structure that made Slowdive work.
All we can do is hope, that Mojave 3 keeps experimenting back to it's
true roots.

Speaking of Spiritualized, I saw them this Saturday at Liberty Lunch in
Austin. It was just not that great. I feel like the analogy of the
Emperor's New Clothes can be applied to reincarnated bands. People grew
to love a band and when that band breaks up, a reincarnation of any of
the members revives their loyal fanbase. A lot of times though,
the fans procalim something that just isn't there. Even if the music
isn't as good, our loyalty to the band often makes us alot more forgiving
critically. I didn't listen to Spacemen 3 before Spiritualized, so I
can't say who was better. I've loved Spiritualized album #1 better than
any of them and I can feel the longing in the soul of Jason Pierce
throughout their 3 albums, but their live show is just a bit boring
musically (and only musically I must say).
There is joy in repetition, and I'm as big a minimalist fan as anybody,
but musically speaking they just don't perform so well. It's a totally
incredible visceral experience (lights, smoke, sound, bass, people
everywhere), but from a critical musical perspective, they really aren't
doing anything that amazing...

Oh, Some Velvet Morning is one of my Slowdive favourites! It's just
so slow, smooth and dreamy - I fell in love with it the moment I
first heard it.
And for the record, heh, I am a Mojave 3 fan and I like what they do,
but I'd sell my soul to get Slowdive back anytime. ;)

they are horrible." i got them on a good night. yay.

I personally like the original *so* much more - granted they did a nice
job adding that certain Slowdive charm like no others could...but still, I
prefer the original, as well as preferring the blissed out glory that
epitomized Slowdive for me (i.e. Shine....yummmmmmmm)

You know whenever I listen to Souvlaki I can't bare to
listen to "Alison." I always listen to the whole album
aside though.
I really feel my favorite is Pygmalion!
It's minimalist in sound compared to Souvlaki mostly,
but there's just something about "Crazy For You" and
"Blue Skied An' Clear," and I always find myself
listening to "Cello."
I don't know why I like Pygmalion the best. Does
anyone else?
Mojave 3 is pretty good. I definitely feel Hastead
and Goswell were the most important members of
Slowdive.
Did the other members of Slowdive ever put out any
other music out? I lose track of all the split ups.
Still haven't heard bought Hurricane #1, for example.

I agree with that... Majave 3 isn't bad but compared to Slowdive I just don't
feel that they hold their own... Because of the fact that it was once slowdive I
am a little more open minded but say I didn't know that.... I wouldn't have
hated the album but it really wouldn't have impressed anything on me...

I, too was at the Spiritualized show in Austin and thought it was one of the
best shows I had ever seen next to the Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev. The
power that encompassed me is undescribable; I couldn't say an entire word
until about fifteen minutes after the show. I didn't even feel like I was
breathing amongst the awestruck crowd, wall of smoke and intense light show.
This show made me realize that in a society plagued with Marilyn Manson,
Spice Girls and Hanson all side by side, Spiritualized is the best band on
the market right now. I think that the atmosphere between Spiritualized's
earlier albums and later albums and their live shows is quite different, but
that's understandable with the amount of work that went into the albums.
Jason Spaceman definently has a vision unlike anything possible with
Spacemen 3, which was made very obvious by the set-closer of Walkin With
Jesus. Keeping the songs to the basics that night may have had something to
do with their regular keyboardist being absent, but I don't know. I think
the way they restrain the noise yet completely unleash it in certain areas
was very cool and I don't think anybody could bring that kind of power to
the mainstream like Spiritualized can. Hopefully the world is ready for the
second coming.
"Think I can Rock and Roll... Probably just twisted.
Think I want to tell the World... Probably ain't listenin."

Simon Scott was in Chapterhouse briefly. He was also in the Charlottes
prior to Slowdive. Christian Savill played in Eternal, on Sarah
Records, prior to Slowdive. Neil Halstead sang on Locust's new album
and recorded a 12" for Tony Morley's Leaf Records a few years back.
