HULTSFRED FESTIVAL 1998
The first bands have been "released" for this year's festival (in
Hultsfred between June 11-13) and here they are in order - (info

Not _one_ bad band ... well, I wouldn't go to see Randy, but
that's just me and my taste. I wonder if Teenage Fanclub is
touring Scandinavia at that time, or if they're just popping
by to play the festival? Anyone?

I agree, the big names are not yet in there. Most of the bands
I like to see are Swedish in fact. Strange that.. I thought they
would slap The Other Festival (tm) in the face with stuff like
My Bloody Valentine, The Verve, Jesus & Mary Chain etc.

Yes, it's very strange. Is it anyone who knows how many more bands it will
be? Jesue and Mary Chain and My bloody Valentine would be nice. Primal
Scream and Radiohead would also be great.
You have to agree that Hawaii is not the place for bob hund. A bob hund
concert is so much about the contact betwen the band and the public. I wish
that bob hund was an unknown band again that played on st dans.

I don't think that they really broke up. In fact, they've recorded a few
things in the last year. One for me, and a couple of covers. But i don't
think the band is a priority anymore for some of the members, and that they
aren't interested in playing live anymore. Which is a pity - I would have
liked to have seen them. When is the thing in PopSided from? Just to keep
the rumors going, there was some talk about doing a concept album...

There was an article in the New York Times that sort of drew parallels
between this album and the Johnny Depp film "Dead Man." I featured a lot
of quotes directly from the head guy in Pere Ubu (Thompson, I believe?)

I received the latest Latvian tape comp that Roberts has put together
yesterday. I had totally forgotten that I signed up for this list, so the
surprise became even nicer (though it is not a good sign for the History
exam this week when I must try to keep about 1200 pages in my head). I will
listen, copy and then pass it on to Chief Erik later this week.
Speaking of tape chains, whatever happened to that Spanish mix tape Kimmo
sent away a _long_ time ago? Kimmo, did you find out anything about it?
/Micke, who has not heard FLY yet but already likes them, because a band
with the same name as a track on "All mod cons" cannot be bad, can they?

It is called "Odekolons 1996". Not sure what that means though. Have not
had time to listen to it yet but judging from the few bands I already know
we are talking indie pop and rock. Guess Roberts Galvans has more info
about it.

Dave Thomas is his name. Was the article comparing the new Ubu album
with the the film, or with the film's soundtrack? (Which was composed and
played by Neil Young, and is nothing less than amazing).
Those who can make it to the shows in Denmark should definitely go. I
saw Pere Ubu live three times during the mid-80's and they are such a
good live band... Mr. Thomas is a great entertainer, take my words for it.

They played the main stage back in 95, and the main stage at Lollipop
in 96. Both were comparatively lame experiences.

NOW the "underground" old/ DIY man Raimonds "Dambis" collect the
"underground" tapes for the new collection "Odekolons'97", what /
maybe / will release in late spring......

OK, first of all thanks to Chief for handing these tix to me.
The bar WC opened at 18.00, and i landed there at 19. By the time, I
found out that there was only going to be free beer until 20, so I was
sort of in a hurry ;-)
Maybe I missed something in the first hour, but there were no traces
that anything fun had happened.
Quenched four Abro-sponsoerd bottles and continued with some serious
stargazing. Surprisingly few "kandisar" were there, I could only
recognize John guitarpalyer from Honey Is Cool (is he living in
Stockholm now?), the singer from Fireside and two of the boys from Kent
(together with 30 beerbottles or so!). Not much journos either...
Pretty boring, not much happening apart from the beer, olives and
chilinuts, so we went home early....
I was going to take Roberts (latvian indie) with me to this party, but
his trip was delayed. OK, Roberts, you didn't miss much.

yet, and I don't think it is official and/or sure yet. But if they are playing
I guess it will be when they already are in Sweden so i would say sometime

Subject: Finn-indie according to P3
Musikjournalen did a Finnish pop special on Monday. Not a whisper
about Cessna or Aknestik of course (the philistines! how could they!)
but intriguing nevertheless. Top of the list were the Supperheads,
Jupiter Park and Lemonator, who all got interviewed in Swedish and
gave varying accounts of why Finnish pop music has never really made
it big. Megalomania is clearly not a Finnish strength.
Funnily enough, the blame for some of the problem was laid at the feet
of the Finnish record companies, who seem scared to touch bands that
sing in English.
The Supperheads' latest single (somebody remind me what it's called)
is nice in a sort of Wannadies way, but rhymes 'gobbledygook' and
(wait for it) 'melody book'... *Robert is quietly sick in a corner*
Larry and the Lefthanded also got an airing, but the best music was
from a band called the T-Bones. Most interesting stuff, at least
covering some ground that's not already been worn to death by the
British and the Swedish. Anybody know anything about them?

You remember where you read it first?
Stockholm gay paper QX's latest issue has a feature on the 'hottest
people under 30' at the moment, and one of them is Grand Tone Music's
Nina Ramsby. So it's finally out in the open that she's a lesbian,
even though she got 'married' to her girlfriend Angela last summer.
There's no interview, but Nina OK'd the publicity.
As far as I know that makes her the first out gay person in the
wonderful world of scan-indie, something which makes at least me very
happy. Can we have some of the guys now? At least some of us are
into other stuff than opera and eurodisco...

YES YES YES! We need more persons like Nina to come out!
I'm just sad I didn't know this yesterday when I made an interview with
Jim in GTM... Way to go Nina!
/ Johanna - and yes, you will probably see me there in the front row at
the GTM gig in Gothenburg this saturday.
PS. Robert, do you like Wallace and Gromit? The episode "A Grand Day
out" when they fly to the moon to get some cheese is not as charming as
their later adventures but still one of the best animations ever.

Agreed - I can easily list 50-100 bands (not on the list) I'd like to see,
but what chances are there Hultsfred Festival will get them? I mean bands
like Bardo Pond, Catherine Wheel, Mojave 3, Slow Smile, Bowery Electric,
Kaspar Hauser, Curve, Cranes... No, I won't list them all. ;)
They said that the bands they now revealed were 1/3 of the total,
so there's room left for some good ones... Grand Tone Music should
have been in there too.

They're too big these days. Unfortunately, because I agree with you -
them playing on the biggest stage makes me think twice about going
to see them even.

Oh, it'll take me at least a week before I can pass it on - as I'm
off to Gothenburg and have loads of stuff to do the next couple of
weeks in other places than here at home.

They can't be bad because two years ago when people first started to
mention them (they even played at the Emmaboda festival right?)
everyone said good things about them. And ye olde Easy wasn't bad
either.

They are, only they are also playing *a lot* of festivals in these
parts of the world this summer, so it's not very exclusive. Just
my 5 ore.

Hmm, the Playground schedule for April looks like this:
02 Fly + The Dolls
09 Pusjkins + Jam Of The Year
16 Komeda + support
23 Come(US) + support
30 Ceasars Palace, Dolores-fest, Djs: Ebbot, Jocke Ahlund, Henrik Berggren.
If I would guess, April 16th, with Komeda, would be it - but it's not
the first week...

UMEA OPEN FESTIVAL (April 3-4)
1997 Umea was given the "PopStad" award, and during three days
in January -97, the city's pop scene vibrated so much, it managed
to reach the local government's board of executives room. The
event was much appreciated, both locally and nationally. In
Umea the youth culture and the music is taken seriously! And
soon the big music party of the spring/winter is here:
UMEA OPEN, a two-day follow-up to the success of the 1997

Subject: [NEWS] aBLe on the way...
ABLE (Harry Lime)
The new album with the title "Lost Love Songs" was mastered two weeks
ago at Cutting Room, and everything went fine (so they didn't have to
re-master it like Cloudberry Jam had to with their new album...)
and if everything goes as planned, it'll be out as soon as April!
The twelve songs on it are: Trouble Among The Horses, For A Purpose,
Thrill, As Long As These Eyes Can See, Sail On A Mill, The End Of It,
We Might Never Meet Again, Screw You Around, Push Your Luck,
You're My Only One, Can't Share You, Anniversary. A single,
"Screw You Around" preceeds the album release and should be out
the last week this month (March).
