Aw, maybe it's just me, I have nothing against band being "influenced"
by other acts, but when the whole image is a blue copy, it just turns
me off. I mean, those guys are talented allright, and their singer got
charisma, but they should be doing their own thing.

I taped them back in dec. 95 (?) at Gino. Great gig, Fireside and
Monster were support acts. Got some good photos too ;-)

Larry and the Lefthanded just released their new album "Quantum Rider", but
you shouldn't forget the last one; "Diabolica" either. this is some of the
finest music on earth at the moment.
Karkkiautomaatti's new CD single "Seikkailuun" is total kick-ass naive
pop-a-rollah, and your friend has no excuse not to buy this piece of
pop-bliss- plastic.
The legendary Kingston Wall's all three long-ago sold out albums have just
been re-released, and no man, woman or extraterrestrial being on earth can
live without the third one "III, Tri-Logy" (except all those too-cool
brit&indie-poppers who only listen to music by shoegazing men with too tight
shirts)
for those inclined towards 7" garage rawk explosions, check out Thee Ultra
Bimboos (who also released and album, "Supermess"), The Flaming Sideburns,
The Duplo! and The Hypnomen, just to mention a few.
If your friend isn't scared about some volume and MC5-Coltrane-Birthday
Party- sort of wall of sound approach to music, along with brilliant songs,
she should recognize that her heart is a dirty container and run, not walk,
run and buy Sweetheart's Intoxicated Boom Boom.
Circle's new album is out. i thought their last one, "Hissi" totally sucked,
but when i told it to the guy at the record store when he mentioned their
new album is out, he forced me to listen to the new one, and i must say
"Pori" (named after their home town) is quite cool, and if your friend has a
place in her heart for Can / Faust influenced prog, then this is the shit.
and finally, for a experimental droney approach to Dinosaur Jr./Smashing
Pumpkins melodies introduce yourselves to Sissy Spacek's "I Hide My Hopes In
The Amplifier" CDEP.
Dairy Owners Under Voodoo Spell will deconstruct your brains with repetition.

I've never actually heard the music, but i've corresponded with the guy via
email. he seemed like a nice guy. they're real noisenik-fanatiks, and i've
heard them compare theirselves with Boredoms, Thinking Fellers Union Local
282, God Is My Co-Pilot and Keuhkot.
Any band that listens to TFUL282 and God Co can't be bad. just can't.

Heheheh....I know who wrote that last description! It had to be Gunni,
the self-named "mailorder slave" of the Bad Taste label, and also
bassist in Unun.

there are a couple releases with the band, I think. For fans of this
bizarre experimental noise music such as this, I have to say you should
check out the Icelandic scene in general (and much of the releases on
the Bad Taste page). There are also some bands on the F.I.R.E. Inc.
(another Reykjavik indie label).

First, big thanks to all the folks whose input gave me more to chatter
about during my presentation. I don't think I made as much of a fool of
myself as I expected to do.
I've had a bunch of requests for dubs of the disc I made up for the
presentation, and I've decided that the way to handle it is to collect the
mailing addresses of all interested parties, compile them into a list, and
mail the CDR off to the first person on the list, who can copy/dub it and
then send the original off to the next person on the list, and so on. Last
person on the list gets to mail the original back to me.
I've amended the playlist (below) to reflect what is actually on the disc.
As, obviously the video I showed wasn't on the disc, and the Estonian
tracks were on different disc which I don't want to send out.

First, I'd like to second Robert's recommendation on the new Aknestik album
(even though I haven't heard it yet), as according to press reports it
should be among their best. Also, as Timo R. said, the new Larry &
Lefthanded album is a must and one really cannot go wrong with picking up
the latest Karkkiautomaatti cd single "Seikkailuun" - easily the best
Finnish pop release of '97! Besides, it is really cheap, around 15 FIM or
so...
If you're into the Pizzicato 5 kind of groove spiced with some 60's beat,
check out the debut CD "Rendezvous with Super" by, err, Super. A more
garage/jazz oriented approach to the lounge thing can be heard on releases
by Elevators.
On a more experimental side we have Panasonic with nothing but cool
analogue synth bleeps and drones. And if there's a copy of "Europa" by Jimi
Tenor somewhere, it shouldn't be missed (as a matter of fact, I'm looking
for one myself!).
The best places to buy these (and many other) records are:
Juke Boss (in Rautatienkatu, close to the railway station and the Alko
liquor store). You'll find most Finnish indie releases and some more
mainstream-ish stuff here, as well as second hand cd's & vinyl; with
friendly prices. (As a self-promotional side note I'd like to add that you
can get the both Cessna releases, "Holiday on Ice" 7" and "Bordeaux" double
3" cd from here as well... :) )
Swamp Music, a second hand store (in Verkatehtaankatu just around the
corner on your way back from Juke Boss) with all sorts of cd's and some
vinyl. For new records there's another Swamp Music in Tuomiokirkonkatu (the
next street). More mainstream-inclined than JB, but still some good pop stuff.
You should try not to buy anything from Epe's or Fazer as their prices are
generally around 15-20 FIM more expensive than in the shops above; the only
reason to shop at Epe's is to pick up cheapo cd singles by Pansies and
Aknestik. I believe you can still get "Fruit" and "Neighborhood Girl" by
Pansies for 9 FIM? You'll be able to find the Aknestik back catalogue with
reasonable prices here.
I'd also like to add that many Finnish (not to mention Swedish, German,
French & Spanish) pop records can be ordered from Mind The Gap in Germany
where the records are a lot more inexpensive than in the shops of their
native countries, even with the postage.

On March 6th, the best fanzine in Sweden (as voted in the Scan-Indie 1997
poll) arranges another party at Tuben (Odenplan, Stockholm) between 9pm-03am.
Playing live are two great bands - REMINDER and MISMATES (you can find links

The first single from Komeda's upcoming album is called "It's Alright Baby"

(always Martin from Soundtrack of Our Lives, Louise from Fidget and
Camilla from GT). All of them rated the song "a hit". The other songs on
the single are 2. Komeda's interpretation of Can's "Mushroom" and 3.
an ambient adventure called "The Sound of Feeling". Komeda's new album,
"What Makes It Go?", is to be released on March 25th in Sweden and about
a month later in the rest of Europe and in the US.

HONEYCAVE (Mega Records)
The band had to cancel their promotion tour of Asia because of the
economic situation (capitalism in a nutshell) and re-schedule it
to April, though their debut album "Come Now" was released on
February 13th in China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia
and Thailand according to plan. It will be released in the Philipines
during the second quarter of 98. All on ROCK Records. Now, the Asian
version of the album is not quite like the European one. The songs
"Slept" and "Shag" had to be removed because of legal problems related
to the fact that they may be offensive to the listener. These songs
were replaced by "Do You Believe In Space" and previously unreleased
"I See No Stars When You Kiss Me". The video for their hit "Beautiful
Boy With Ugly Teeth" has been on rotation on MTV Asia and Channel V,
and the song has been picked up by a mix of different radio stations.
The video has been shown uncut, even though there were some initial
discussions about the scene where Maria (vocals) blows bubbles with
a bubblegum, only backwards which makes her do "strange things with
her tongue". Finally, regarding their appearence in the film/on the
soundtrack to the US movie "Clubland" - there's now a dedicated

Someone did post info about it to the list a while back, though
I don't remember if it had something to do with the gig or not.
I know Luger is responsible for booking them, but I haven't heard
from them for about a month (since they moved in fact) - or I
would have posted their tour list with the date in it.

It's more like a fistfuck than a fistfight, I'd say...
Anyway, I think these comparisons with Boredoms, Butthole Surfers, and
Birthday Party are not really valid anymore. That's what they sounded
like when they started out some years ago, but these days they are more
into weird ambient soundscapes and tape loops.
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Stockholm concert, but at least
I got to hear parts of the soundboard DAT last night (my friend was the
sound engineer), and it sounded really intriguing.
