I think I have quite reliable info about this, since I have interviewed
CLOUDBERRY JAM this very evening ;). The release party is to be held at
Tantogarden in Stockholm on January 26th. It will be a combined release
party, also celebrating the release of the new album from CARPET PEOPLE
(has anyone heard that one yet? It should be out by now.). So no release
party in Linkoping. But of course that gig at Herrgarn will be something
special, after all it is the first gig in their home town after the release
and all of their friends will be there.
For your knowledge I have some further info about Herrgarn. As can be read
on the scan-indie website there were some talk about moving the "Rock The
Nation" gigs away from Herrgarn. Emil Larsson, who books bands to play at
Herrgarn, passed by during the interview and told me that this was _not_
going to happen. Thursdays at Herrgarn will be the time to remember also in
the future. But it will not be called "Rock The Nation" any longer. The new
name of the club is "John Doe". I guess this means that they are now
independent from the students nations?

Uh-uh, so they have put aside their "why have a release party in Stockholm
when all of our friends is right here?" view on the release-thingie,
which caused a bit of controversy when their last album was released?

Yes "Assemble & Plug" as it is called should have been released on
January 5th, but I haven't seen or heard anything about it so far,
so it looks like it has been delayed. Anyone from NONS still on the
list?

Nah, take one of those ugly party-boats from Stockholm to Helsinki and jump
on a train to St. Petersburg (6 hrs.). besides almost free alcohol, great
clubs like Gora & Fishfabrique, beautiful parks and breath taking
architecture, they have a really good selection of pirate CDs... anything
from crap to Tom Waits.

No, this time it is a publication whose name consists of binary digits

Hmm, perhaps it does. But I am not sure about that change of direction -
including other kinds of music. If I understand things right, exactly the
same people will be responsible for the gigs in the future. And at least
the schedule for the first three weeks of the year looks quite "normal".
Besides, they have had other kinds of music than pop before. Hip-hop for
example.

True. I suspect that that statement came from the booking people when they
were not sure of what would happen. In any case it'll be interesting to
see what kind of scene or even venue (if I am allowed to have some hope
for a new venue downtown...) can be created at the "Nationshuset".

I think thre even is a straight boat from Stockholm to St Petersburg,
if not the maffia has taken it over ;-) Anyone tried that one?

Wow, what kind of music? I got to check them out. They might even be

Good stuff! Is it a kind of outdoor market? In Vilnius the guys had the
truck at the back of their car filled, and just opened the lid
ifsomeone wanted to look. IT was a parking lot, with 30-40 cars, and
lots of people hanging over each car.

Cardigans1 asked about the prize for the new CD here in Sweden. Well, it
has not been released here yet so it is a bit hard to say. But here in
Linkoping the prize for a CD should not, normally, be higher than SEK 155
(which is about 19-20 dollars if I remember the current exchange rates
correctly). The new album will probably be released in USA too, but it
might take a while (because it was not very long since "Providing the
atmosphere" was released there, I think?)

Gosh, someone more than me on this list who owns it! The rise and fall
of CRD, or what can you say!?
These guys used to be good, or at least were able to maintain some sort
of credibility for the first two albums (Maximum Overdrive and God,
guns and gasoline). Definitely worth checking out.
But when Joel left, they became a parody of themselves (huga!). I can't
stand the stuff they made from Moosehair and on.
One of the magic impressions of CRD was a live concert in Sala, Folkets
Hus, back in -90, or was it early -91?
During "American dream", Joel was posing with an american flag and a
plastic gun on stage. Powerful images.
During this time they toured with Poppee Fabrikk, who also were very
powerful on stage. I went to see them again in Koping, and we decided
to arrange a gig at Kolingsborg, Stockholm for both bands.
It was in the fall of -91, and CRD's first gig in Stockholm so far,
coinciding with the relsease of the Superluminal single. The body scene
was big at the time, and the gig was sold out.
I'm rambling...

Oh yes!!! I love Riga, been there 10 times or so... Good pubs, nice
atmosphere, cool indie guys hanging around the square in old town.
And then the normal tourist attractions: old houses, art, amber,
communistic artefacts...

I never noticed them at the Tirgus!? But I haven't been there for a
long time. With or without CD's, the Tirgus is an absolutely cool place
to be. Lots of old women selling pig heads, flowers, calamari, live
dogs, smuggler ciggarettes, well everything... Go there!

Sounds a bit expensive to me, but it's a demand and supply thing, i
guess supply is running low these times...

Well, not something I usually talk about loud ;). But yes, I own it. I
actually managed to find it for free(!!) not too long ago. Even if these
guys did receive my attention quite many years ago (cannot remember when
but it was before the "Moosehair.." album) I never bought their records and
this is still the only one I got. And I have never seen them live. I had
the chance at the Hultsfred festival some years ago (1993 or -94 perhaps?)
but it did not happen. And I heard afterwards that they really sucked then,
so I am not very sad about missing that. But this is a quite entertaining
piece of ..hmm.. noice! (or perhaps techno-metal-punk-industry-synth as I
think someone (note: not me) tried to label it some years ago ;).

Actually, I think it's something like $150 for two years to actually
register the domain (go to http://www.internic.net. they're the people
responsible for registring domain names.) But like mo said, it'll
probably come to a little bit more if you need someone to host it and to
get all the Domain Name Server stuff straightened out which can be a bit
of a hassle (I have to do it for the web design firm I work for every once
in a while...) If you don't feel like dealing with all the servers and
forms and things like that there are a whole bunch of companies that'll do
all that stuff for you (including ours, but I'm not going to turn this
into an advert...)

Anything from weird finnish dinojr.meetsspacefuckup like Sissy Spacek to
local... all kinds of bands. what's in common with the russian bands i've
seen is that even if the music they make isn't revolutionary and something
you'll remember 'till you die, they always play incredible shows. it seems
they practice like hell, and the crowd usually goes nuts during the 2 to 3
hour long shows. we had a afro-russian "etno" band called Markschneider
Kunst playing at the Orange club, and they we're amazing... and in a few
months we'll be having Dva Samaljota over here. they are what rock'n roll is
all about. besides playing incredibly catchy weirdo-rock, their last
singer's first words on their last visit over here in Helsinki were "where
are the drugs and whores"... and he was serious.
It seems he's dead now.

In St.Petersburg the pirate stuff is sold in small electronics stores on
street level and some of the little kiosks... just be prepared to walk
because it's a huge city. and be sure to avoid dehydration by drinking
plenty of reasonably good local beer.

Anything from weird finnish dinojr.meetsspacefuckup like Sissy Spacek to
local... all kinds of bands. what's in common with the russian bands i've
seen is that even if the music they make isn't revolutionary and something
you'll remember 'till you die, they always play incredible shows. it seems
they practice like hell, and the crowd usually goes nuts during the 2 to 3
hour long shows. we had a afro-russian "etno" band called Markschneider
Kunst playing at the Orange club, and they we're amazing... and in a few
months we'll be having Dva Samaljota over here. they are what rock'n roll is
all about. besides playing incredibly catchy weirdo-rock, their last
singer's first words on their last visit over here in Helsinki were "where
are the drugs and whores"... and he was serious.
It seems he's dead now.

In St.Petersburg the pirate stuff is sold in small electronics stores on
street level and some of the little kiosks... just be prepared to walk
because it's a huge city. and be sure to avoid dehydration by drinking
plenty of reasonably good local beer.

Hahey! Reminds me of Belarus and the independent music scene there. OK,
we're drifting of from the scan scen now, but Belarus was a hell of a
place!
I spent one week in Minsk, and boy, were those kids independent ;-)
Some squatter punks occupied an empty building, playing strange dub and
sampler music. They ran a record company called ZEUG records, they
even have a URL somewhere.
Then ther was the band Drum Ecstacy, consisting of 3 drummers and one
DJ/sampler/guitar guy.

Same thing here. I'm afraid they suck today, but during the tour of
their 2nd album they were really powerful, and even had humour. They
did a live cover of the Revolting Cocks classic "Beers, Steers and
Queers" that never made it to the record. Unfortunately, that is all
gone now.

Hello, here are some great Latvians rocknews (15th jan'98)

1. Pure "blackmetal" group AFHEIM finished working on second
"demo" and renamed as themselves to THE BLIZZARD.
2. Most famous "sympho/blackmetal" project HERESIARH make up
the first album "Dragon of War", and in spring make a plans
for Latvian tour;
3. The first album in late spring/ early summer will release a
"hard rock'n'roll" act MORAL FREE!!!! Long awaited....
4. Latvian "pop" megastars PRATA VETRA/ BRAINSTORM will win three
nominations in Latvia's so called "Grammy" ceremony (in 4'th
january): as "Radio hit", "The best song", "The best songs
video". There was a prizes in 15 nominations.
