Q. How did you get the idea to call the band 'Dryad'? (a treespirit
in the Greek Mythology)
RS: The band was called 'Cone' at first but we found out that there already
existed a band with that name so we had to change. Helena found the word
'Dryad' in a dictionary.
Q. When did the band start?
RS: The band was formed a little more than two years ago under the name
'Cone'. We changed to 'Dryad' about six months later. We changed some
members earlier this year so the current lineup is fairly new.
Q. What did you think about the concert at Kafe 44?
RS: It was fun. The sound was fairly good and we managed to get some
action both on and in front of the stage. We have been working a lot
with our performance lately.
HA: Yes, you can't just stand still and play. You got to move
with the music. You can rehearse the songs until you can play them in
your sleep but that will not help you unless you manage to get some
personality into the performance.
Q. What songs did you play at the concert?
RS: 'No Pride Aquired', 'Headlights', 'Sleepy', 'Alone', 'Vampire',
'Beautiful Man', 'Seasons', 'Walk Around The Never Corner', 'Rooftops'.
Q. How would you describe your music?
RS: Some kind of rock music... You just have to see us live and form an
opinion of your own. A couple of our earlier songs could possibly be
described as pop songs, but things have gradually turned heavier towards
a genuine rock sound.
Q. Who writes the songs?
RS: It's a teamwork. Someone comes up with an idea to a song, maybe
a couple of chords or some lyrics, and then we spend a couple of hours in
our rehearsal room to see if we can develop the idea and create a new
song.
HA: If someone else in the band comes up with the idea to the music I try
to create a singing melody to match the music and after that I start
working with the lyrics. When I get the idea it's often the other
way around. I get inspired by events in my everyday life or in the big
world outside and then I try to catch my feelings about these events with
the help of the written language. The lyrics then provides the foundation
to the singing melody. The next step will be the music. Sometimes I end
up with a complete song, sometimes we create the music together.
Q. I know that Helena has worked a lot with amateur theatre. How about
the rest of the band? Do you have that background too?
RS: No, but everyone except myself are studying music at Rytmus (a
cultural school) so we get a lot of different musical influences.
Q. What kind of music do you listen to in your sparetime?
RS: I like everything from pop to hardcore. It's the same with
the others.
HA: Yes, I listen to a lot of different stuff. I have always listened
to different female artists as Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and Polly
Jean Harvey. Other "heroes" are Blind Melon and Heather Nova. But I
tend to listen to everything that rocks with a soul and a pure heart.
I'm also into folkmusic, for example Noa, and... Well, you get
the picture.
Q. What are you doing in your sparetime?
RS: We go a lot to concerts to get inspiration and to feel the energy.
Q. The last question: What are your plans for the near future?
RS: We will be going into a studio in November to record a new demo.
After that... Well a recording contract would be nice...
We'll review that demo as soon as we get a chance. Remember were
you read about 'Dryad' first. And do check them out if they come to a
town near you.

Subject: WUPPERTAL etc
This Thursday are the Malmoe-duo WUPPERTAL playing two gigs.
First at "HOS DEN BLINDA ASNAN" and later on the evening at KB.
WUPPERTALs line-up is bass, guitar, drum-machine, samples and vocals.
the drums play slow heavy beats. the bass lines remind me sometimes of
the ones Peter Hook play. Even though W themselves never listened to
the Folk Implosion, it's the closest reference I can find.
They are indeed a very good and inovative band.
"Opening" for W at BLIND ASNAN will be ME. I will borrow four cd players
and eight speakers to play the new FLAMING LIPS record, ZAIREEKA.
It's released on four CD's with different instruments on each CD. To
hear the whole record you have to have four cd-players playing at the
same time.

Well i've heard about Yum Yum's. They are from Norway and they actually did
a gig at the club that i promote (Harrys Playground). They were backing a
guy called Paul Collins (former singer in legendary U.S band The Beat!).
At the same night that they played, there was another band called Psycotic
Youth playing. And....if someone want to know more about Yum Yum's, i
suggest that person to get in touch with Jorgen Westman (singer in Psycotic
Youth) since he's a friend to the band.
Anyway....Yum Yum's play some kind of "Powerpop". Pretty good actually.
But hey.....listen to The Beat! They're FANTASTIC!!! (they are also known
as "Paul Collins Beat")

Thanks for the info Patrik! I had no idea they had played in Sweden,
but I have checked them up on the web, and found a lot of information,
a load of good reviews, though no contact address. So how do one go
about contacting Jorgen Westman? Is he on the net?

Great! Thanks! I knew had seen his name somewhere on the net - and it was
at the Psychotic Youth website I found out when visiting the UFO site. ;)

I have only heard one single song on the radio, and it was pretty average.
Don't know if I want to say anything more until I get to hear the album -
heh. Perhaps it'll be a total mindblower?
By the way - National Swedish Radio (Channel P3) has really picked up some
good records these days! I have been woken up by my radio alarm clock the
last week and nothing but great songs have been played. Especially the
new Grand Tone Music (former Salt, almost) single (anyone got it? what is
it called?) and of course the bob hund EP. They're going to play these
ones to death (I've heard them at least three-four times a day - okay okay,
I just got a radio at work.. heh) but as long as they are as good as they
are, I'm not complaining. :-)

Well, not all of us, but i just came back from a two-week trip to the
baltics. It's a cool place, i must say...
I used to buy cheap pirate CD's in Vilnius but that market got busted
by the police. Too bad. The latest albums by Radiohead, Frontline
Assembly, Cure, Paradise Lost, etc etc, at $3 each (26 SEK). Fresh from
the factories in Bulgaria and Russia...
So can you tell us about the situation in Latvia. Is there any place
where you still can buy this stuff???

Sounds excellent ... there are some of these fellows from eastern-europe
on germany's flea-markets, but they've only got his disco/charts-crap to
sell, why don't they bring some good stuff with them ... ?!

Mh. ... a.m. fellows sometimes come from Poland, don't know if they're
pressing the CD's over there or if they get them otherwhere from ... ?

Down here in Estonia its pretty much the same, haven't checked the
markets myself much, but the price should be the same. The trouble is,
most of the stuff they're selling is _very_ mainstream, and it rearly
gets as far or further down the alt. line than the names you've
mentioned.
If you happen to be in Tallinn, most likely for foreigners, check out
the smaller streets of the Old Town (well, not the smallest ones, no
people, no sellers there...). At least some time ago, they were selling
pirate CDs right there. They might have been a little more expensive,
though...
Hope we're not talking of an overall negative reputation here... ;)

no i think its just illegal to do the cd's and to sell and make money on
them. i doubt that its illegal in any country just to buy and own them.

A pal went to celebrate new year in Riga, he went to a big party at
Kipsala, lot's of funny people, he told me. Kipsala is kind of the
"students island" in Riga, cool place.
He also said something of a concert with a popular latvian band, but he
didn't remember their name. Do you know who played live during these
days? Did i miss something?

I never asked, but you can't really tell if it's a pirate, or just an
odd pressing. Well, you can assume that it's a pirate when the booklet
is blank on the inside, but it would be hard for the customs to prove
that. The disc itself is a perfect copy, even the picture CD's come out
clearly.
Then there are bootleg "best of" compilation, and these records are
obviously not released by the record company. But I don't think the
customs officials would make the distinction. ;-)
When the new album by Prodigy was released, I planned to buy say 50
CD's at the market, sellling them in Stockholm at 5 times the price.
But then, if the customs find you with 50 copies of teh same album,
they might had gone suspicious.

As far as music CD's go, i believe that's correct. But those guys in
Vilnius also sell pirate CD rom, and that's why the police made a
razzia. BSA is everywhere :-(
This time, it was _really hard_ to get decent CD roms in Lithuania...

I'm sitting here listening to the Ett fall & en l'o'sning 2x7" by Bob Hund,
and have decided to kidnap the band to finland. if all my plans go as
expected Bob Hund should be playing it's second show in finland allready
next saturday at the Holidays in Hawaii! partee at the Tavastia club. if you
want the band to play over there in Sweden, just contact me... also i've
been thinking i could take the band on a miniature US tour with shows at
CBGB's, Graffiti, Trocadero and some place in Dayton, Ohio.
I hope you have nothing against my incredibly brilliant plan.

Do you know how quickly I would give my left testicle and my firstborn
child to see BH play CB's (pardon the graphic image there...). Of course
the Murcury Lounge would be better (more room to jump around and better
drinks) but hey. Okay, I think it sounds like a plan. Get the cloroform
and burlap sacks ready!
See, all jokes aside, I think bob hund, like a number of brilliant
scandinavian bands would kick ass over here given half a chance. I
actually had an interesting run-in along those lines a few weeks ago when
my lowly ska/punk band (I'm the indie kid in the punk band, go
figure) played a show here in NJ and I spotted a girl
wearing a Starmarket T-shirt. After we were done playing I ran up to her
and went "Ohmygodthat'ssocoolthatyouactuallyknowwhotheyare" or something
like that and she said, um, yeah, it's actually his, and she pointed to
her boyfriend who was wearing a "I {heart} Chester Copperput T-shirt".
Turns out he and his label, Popkid (http://www.popkid.com) are going to
rerelease Sunday's Worst Enemy over here and (If I remember correctly)
release a starmarket and a Chester Copperput 7" (or it might have been a
split...). Either way, I think it's cool as hell that some of these bands
are finally making their way over here. It's a start...

Humm, it's a bit sad, but you can't expect them to have every little
indie band. OK, I have to admit I even go for mainstream at that price.
Recent purchases: Bjork, J M Jarre, Police, Leonard Cohen, Bowie,
Kraftwerk, Blur, Oasis, Metallica, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers,
Alphaville, Billy Idol and lots more.

Actually there is more .......
About a month ago I got a list of pirate CDs available here in Tartu. It
consisted of 2206 items and I found (just some from the beginning...) 2
albums by Chemical Brothers, 4 by Cocteau Twins, 9 by Cure & 6 by Dead Can
Dance, plus some kinda rare/alternative ones - 'my life in the bush of
ghosts' by Eno & Byrne, 'no pussyfooting' by Fripp & Eno, etc. Their price
should about $5.

Should be correct. Nevertheless, it can't be very probable to find these
(read: the ones you would like to have the most) CDs on the
market(place) or in a shop. If you happen to have some time here, or/and
know smb it should be pretty easy to order from such lists. It is more
reliable too, if you're dealing with a person you know, you are safer
from the defective copies as well, in a shop you never have the time to
check all of the disc(s)...
Btw. it is very easy to distinguish between those Bulgarian or Russian
copies and the original ones. Check the back cover of the disc, if its
edges are not correctly folded (pierced, etc), it should be a pirate.

Hmm, I guess you never went to lithuania?! The former CD market in
Vilnius was heaven. All the above mentioned were found abundantly,
except maybe for Eno. You had huge opportunities. Sadly, it's gone!

True, we know it, and the police knows it, but it's not binding
evidence enough to get them confiscated at the border... ;-)
