It's one of my personal favourites of the year actually. I have always
been a DM buff on the other hand (my first record was Speak & Spell ;))
but haven't really enjoyed their material of late. Until "Ultra" came
out. (But I didn't vote for it, because there were many better albums
released last year).

Something which should not matter, as the one with the most votes always
wins - no matter if only one or a thousand voted. You don't see poll results
stating that 384.589 said they would vote on the Democratic party, 1.394.490
would vote on the Socialist party, etc.
But, to make an exception for once, even though the number of people who
actually did vote was 33% better than last year, they weren't too many.
Between 40-50 persons. (1/5 of the total number of subscribers). Ie. those

Hm, yes, I saw another - for me - very interesting gig, that took place
on sat.! It was Headcoats, Headcoatees & esp. On trial, which are very
much my style! But on sat. I was already on my way home, and my car did
not break in Denmark again, not until Flensbourg ... mhm, it should
better have broken in Denmark, when I think about it! Damn! ;)
Booze war:Oh, dunno, I always have to taste some new "1998 argangsol"
which is always very tasty IMO!
These are crazy days! But, my friends and I just planned our short-trip
to Gothenburg when we sat in my car and were waiting for the craftsman
... they couldn't resist after I told them, that I'm in possession of a
"Gothenburg record-store guide" ;)
So, see you there ...

My first record was "Speak & Spell" to and DM is still my all-time favourite
band. The way they got back with "Ultra" last year is remarkable and truly
magnificent. But of course, I am a bit biased here.

As far as I have heard both CDS have been released in the UK.
Their record company (ODOR - Spinefarm Records) really made an effort
with whole thing; they even brought a bunch of reporters from the NME
and the Melody Maker (among many others) to watch the bands play live in
Lapland. Then took the reporters to a Motorski safara and all...
I guess it payed off, 'cos the gig got reviewed in both of the magazine.

Aha - I heard something about all this somewhere, but I had no idea
that Super and Supperheads were among the bands who participated, nor
that it was people from magazines like NME and Melody Maker! Any
information about the whole thing on the web somewhere? It sure sounds

Now hold it a minute here. Since I have studied Statistics I must protest!
In almost every poll result, at least all the reliable ones, there is a
note saying either the total number of people that has been asked _or_
whether the difference between the parties is statistically significant or
insignificant. If the question is "which political party is the most
popular in Sweden" I would find the results much more reliable if 1 000 000
people had been asked than if 10 people had been asked. Not that political
polls and votes like this are very comparable, but the closer to 100%
coverage one gets in the poll the closer one also gets to the true opinions
of the group as a whole. And I, for one, could also see some significance
in knowing if it was a group of three people or a group of 200 who thought
that DM had made the third best album of the year. Enough rambling about
this, I guess.

Not that I have seen. One could try http://www.spinefarm.fi. It has
links to both of bands' own websites. The Super website even has a link
to the NME (altough I didn't find anything there).
Maybe we should ask Kimmo, he tends to know everything that's happening

How very nasty and stupid of us all to forget Komeda's Boogie woogie/rock
'n' roll. Easily the best swedish single last year. Even I didn't think
of it until it was too late. And they would have won the "best video"
category as well if there were one. Brilliant "nationalromantik".

Well i think it does matter how many people vote. think what the results
would have been if i and my three closest friends would have been the only
ones that voted... every year some idiot like Rasmus's manager Teja makes
xerox copies of magazine's voting ballots and gets his newest invention into
the top ten of the best newcomer section.
I don't know if its just me, but i think democrasy is the more valid the
bigger the percentage of voters is.

Nope, some people just don't have the time or don't do it because of
ideological reasons. i bet there were people with interesting opinions and
lots of interest towards rock-a-rollah that didn't vote because wild sex on
the table, trying to emulate Keiji Haino on an acoustic guitar, reading a
good book, designing covers for a 7", making weird noises with electric
wire, a battery, an amplifier and a taut string or carving fishing lures was
just a lot more fun... i voted, but hey, that's just me.

Yeah, but what's the idea to bring a bunch of brits to hear a britpop band
that they have thirteen in a dozen theirselves. i mean, Super i can
understand somebody liking, the singer talks this cute Tampere-dialect when
she's drunk and the drummer is enjoyable, but Supperheads just plain sucks.

I don't know if that video had made an impression on anyone over here but
when I saw Komeda open for Ben Folds Five (who the hell thought that bill
up?) it was the only song the generally extremely hostile audience seemed
to like. Maybe that had something to do with the very amusing bass and
guitar choreography though.
Anyway, the video is great, but the song somehow strikes me as not the
best thing they could have released off that album. Doesn't even have
Lena singing in it, which I always thought was one of the groups pros...

Yes, as it has already been mentioned. Spinefarm/Odor got a deal with a UK
distributor (Pinnacle, if memory serves) who released the above mentioned
cd singles by Super and Supperheads. Their '97 albums ('Rendezvous with
Super' and 'Dinner' respectively) will also be released there soon.
Trivia-minded Super aficionados should learn that this is not the same
"Tempted" cd single that was released on Odor in 1996; instead it features
the album version of the title track plus 'Misty Hours' from the album, a
remix of 'Bingohostess Goes Berserk' and 'Day Out With Crimplene Kids'
(from the Japanese version of 'Rendezvous...').
Then Joakim said:

I cannot remember all the details, but I think there were journalists from
six UK weeklies/glossies including NME, MM, Kerrang (!), Loaded and two
others. As far as I know, they first checked out a couple of bands
(Elevators, Xysma?) in Helsinki and were then on the next morning flown to
Rovaniemi (the town from where Supperheads, and myself as it happens, are
from). I wasn't there so I cannot really tell all the groovy stuff the
journos did, but I would guess they at least met up with good old Santa
Claus and maybe had a quick snack at the northernmost McDonald's in the
world...err, anyway NME had a nice little review of the gig in their big
Christmas/New Year issue.
When last I looked, the Supperheads web site didn't say anything about the
event and the Super pages have not really been updated a lot lately (this
may however change in the future...).
Then Sami reminded us:
> let's not forget both singles got *trashed* in the nme a week a two
> later...
That's right. Quoting from memory, Super were described as 'hideous
Cardigans clones [...] total waste of time' while Supperheads inspired the
writer to say 'it's impossible to convey the arseness of this record by
mere words. Imagine a battle ofthe bands contest where all the participants
are Cast tribute bands, the the loser of that contest'.
Anyway, the single of the week was by Puff Daddy, so I guess the writer
wasn't particularly pop-oriented.
By the way, Super are going to record a new single later this spring and an
album to follow. Chances are it will be produced by Ian Catt. Now that
would be interesting! Also, two tracks from their Japan-only CDEP "Tickets"
will appear on compilation CD's before the summer.
that's all I know (right now)

Arseness, wonder how you translate _that_ into Finnish...
Anyway, whatever NME think, I was pleasantly surprised by the Super
single when I finally got my CD player and got stuck into the spoils
of last summer's Tampere visit. Cardigansy alright, but enough of its
own thing to deserve some respect. Especially now that the Cardigans
are no longer very cardigansy themselves.

Subject: A-Bombs & Granada live reviews
In an effort not to become too predictable I went to _two_ concerts this
week. And they were not even in the same town. Anyway, here goes;
CANDYSUCK cancelled their gig at Herrgarn and A-BOMBS from Stockholm showed
up instead. They played rock n roll which was more melodic and groovy than
it was aggressive (I am not good at dropping references concerning this
kind of music but someone mentioned BACKYARD BABIES? And I should think a
whole lot of early 70s bands too ;). It sounded quite good in the beginning
but I lost concentration after a while. I think the reason may sound a bit
odd, but I just think that they were too good musicians. I do not mind if
this kind of music sounds a bit dirty but here we had four musicians who
definitely showed the audience that they had spent lots of hours in a
rehearsal room. Gave me the feeling I sometimes get when watching some
perfectly choreographed (is that the word??) dancing - first I get
impressed by their skills but then it bores me because it is so clinically
clean and with nothing that stands out. Massive guitar walls but with a
perfectly mixed sound with vocals well hearable above the noice (btw, the
vocalist looked very much like a younger version of Chris Cornell of
SOUNDGARDEN). It was OK but not more than that.
On friday I headed for Stockholm and the Ettnollett party at Tuben. Playing
live was RED HOUSE PA... sorry ;). Playing live was a Stockholm based band
called GRANADA and I can bet my whole fortune that these guys are
collectors of RED HOUSE PAINTERS stuff. But GRANADA turned out to be
somewhat more electrified than other bands playing this kind of slow and
melancholy thing. Three guitars and a keyboard helped building a massive
wall of sound. I usually like this kind of stuff and there were a couple of
tunes (I recall one being called "Electricity", for example) that made me
think that I can also be able to like this band. But this night there were
two big problems; one was that the vocalist was not exactly top-quality
stuff, to say the least. Another problem was a quite poor sound quality (I
never seem to get satisfied, eh? Either too good or too bad ;), which
seemed quite strange to me after having been there watching their more than
two-hour long sound check earlier that evening. Anyway, like I said, some
songs were good and I can give this concert also the OK.
(But the best part of the weekend was the after-party in Stockholm were I,
Nicke Bostrom (editor of Ettnollett fanzine) and a friend of his drank
_very_ cheap wine while watching 10-15 year old video recordings from MTV
and Super Channel until day-break. A complete orgy in early JESUS & MARY
CHAIN, THE PRIMITIVES, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, COCTEAU TWINS, TALULAH GOSH
etc. The backlash came the day after when my body violently showed me what
it thought about the brilliant idea of sleeping in a not-to-comfortable
armchair in Sundbyberg ;)
/Micke, now concentrating on the olympics
