Subject: Speed of Sound Ent.!!!
Hello!
Last Friday booking agency Motor threw a party for all the concert
promoters here in Sweden. 4 bands got to play for 15 minutes each and
two of those were The Mopeds and Freewheel. Quite boring if you ask me,
and it wasn't until the last band went on stage that the whole thing
turned. The band was an all new fourpiece by the name of Speed of Sound
Enterprise and they made their debut gig at the party. The singer of the
band is Kent Norberg, also the singer of Sator, and as guitar- and
drumplaying we have the twins Danne and Jocke Levin, formerly of Swedish
Punkband De Lyckliga Kompisarna. On bass we have Jonas Redig, the sound
engineer for Fidget, Robot, Silverbullit and more. Sounds on paper like
a pretty bizarre mixture of musicians, but when you hear them you hear
classic guitarpop/rock a la Beatles, Stones, Supergrass, Fountains of
Wayne and Teenage Fanclub, and even though I know these guys pretty well
I have to say they are so, so good. They will be looking to get some
gigs at good places around Sweden before summer and they are just
putting the final touches to their first ever demo. Try to catch up with
them. They are great and they're gonna be huge.

Freewheel is the worst crap coming out for ages.
I can't understand why everyone talks and writes
so fucking much about them everywhere. I get so tired even of thinking
of discribing why the suck so much.

Um, yeah, sorry... it wasn't Emrik from Stonefunkers. Which we
actually was told that it was ("yeah, the fat guy") by the guy
who'd booked us. No, it was a band from Stockholm called Emrick.
That played some kind of twee-pop I guess one could say with a
singer that sounded sort of like the singer of Weeping Willows
but, well, a lot better (that said I'd better add that I don't
think the WW-singer is especially good). According to them-
selves they've attracted some serious label/publiser attention
(Warner/chapel, AIR, Vibraphone) so if you're into that kind
of music you should probably keep your ears open (I'm not but
they sounded pretty okay I guess).
The reason to why both Emrick and Lousy played was that someone
had fucked up. According to himself because he wanted to get back
at the Underground/Kompaniet owner for being an asshole, sort of.

According to the newspapers over here, Diamanda Galas is coming here
for the "kulturhuvudstadsaret". Does anyone know where, when, how?
Is it part of a tour?
Maybe i didn't pay attention, but i haven't seen this gig posted to the
list yet:
DN today said that Grand Tone Music, Dr Kosmos and more are playing at
a showcase at Tanto, next tuesday (17th?). Entrance is only 20 kr!!!
Hilarious. ;-)
Be there, this could be a great night out, and GTM are getting quite a
bit of airplay up here (at least Rocket play their single twice a day
or more).

Not true at all; Freewheel plays a kind of country pop which hasn't
existed in Sweden for ages, and I would really like to recommend their
debut album to everyone who likes non-pretentious country or pop music.
You can hear that they know Eggstone, to put it mildly.

I agree they sounded a lot like the Stones, but Fountains of Wayne...?
Or Teenage Fanclub? Nah, don't think so. Much more like Flamin' Groovies
on helium, actually (the Kent Norberg-factor...) But they were good:-)

I don't care much about all these softy nerdy bands in this country.
But they don't disturb me or anything. BUT Freewheel has a lousy singer
that sings even lousier lyrics. And on top of this boring Academic
predictable music. You can here that they come from Lund.
And a lot of people gets all exited about these guys becuase they are so
old and experienced. And they put their music in the first room, not
their image..Ohhh wow! That's new! They must be the only band in the
world that has said that...
...Especially on 'Cafe Sundsvall'. All in the band in black shirts and
Donnie Brascoe leater jackets.
And.
Is there something that I would like to say about this band is that they
are pretentious. In a negative way.

Nah, well, I only heard their "landsplaga" Sweet Swedish Winter" and
IHMO it was just annoying.

When I saw Eggstone live a few times, they used to ROCK! Remember the
live versions of "Have you seen Mary", "The Dog" etc.
But i can't possibly imagine that Freewheel would rock on stage. That

I wasn't that impressed by them until I saw them for the 3rd time
(about 3 months ago) when they were pretty damn good.

If you don't like the CD-single with "Whatever gets you by", I'm pretty
sure you won't like anything else by them. I can't remember if it's
named after that song or not, though.

I heard some interesting info about this one. Apparently it is going to be
a totally unplugged event, with LOOSEGOATS and Ward J (aka Ward J Little,
aka Emil Odling (former BLITHE vocalist). He is totally solo and on his own
nowadays) first playing some acoustic songs each and then doing a set
together during the last part of the show. I have a strong feeling that
"country" will be the word in everybodys heads ;).
/Micke, still not even sure if he has got a head (well, I probably have,
because I played "Murmur" by REM recently and it turned out that I still
like it)

Or listen to some real country such as Gram Parsons or the Flying
Burrito Brothers. Well, neo-indie-country/folk-whatver like

it is (named after the song "whatever gets you by"). my
suggestion would be to check out one of their two ep:s -
"caper" or the one oforementioned. there is a single out
there too (7" or cd), but while the b-side "loser outfit"
is really good, the a-side "raceday" isn't, so i'd defin-
itely go with the two ep:s.

Strange that - the current tour list for GTM doesn't say anything about
this gig - and the latest list came in today. It does however, as also
listed in the Scan-Indie website's gig guide lists (together with a
Pere Ubu date I assumed would stir up some discussions on the list but
- anyone ever checking out the gig guides on the web?) say that they
play there on February 24th.

A little bit of self-promo here. Well it's scandinavian indie allright so
here goes: My band, smartalec, sent out our first demo monday, and today
(wednesday) they call from p3 and say they're going to play it on p3 demo,
(saturday 16.00). And possibly on musikjournalen rock as well, 'cause Hakan
Persson liked it a lot as well... Fast work. I guess I should have kept my
mouth shut, but I have to tell someone and I can't get hold of anyone on
the phone and I'm fairly happy ;-)! Listen to the programme, hope you'll

Stumbled cross an old poll on the Indiepop list (US, UK?)
there was a category called best band not from the US or the UK:

Red Sleeping Beauty (Sweden) (7)

Komeda (Sweden) (5)
Quite overwhelming. But i never heard of Club 8. One hit wonder, or am
i just being ignorant?
Also, what i heard from Red sleeping beauty didn't impress. The song on
Swed-indie tape was a bit dull, imho.
What have they done to deserve all those votes? Anything worth checking
out?

Congratulations on your first steps to indiepop stardom! Sounds great.

Y'know, that's something I've noticed being on this list for the past few
months- The North of No South bands get their due discussion, but the other
indie*pop* bands aren't spoken of very often. Lots of discussion about the
indierock bands, but the others, (like RSB and Club 8) are looked over. Not a
criticism, just an observation; rather indicative of the taste of the list, I
suppose. (of course, I lean towards pop, so I'm definitely biased).
Club 8 are very much in the same vein as Red Sleeping Beauty, so if you
were unimpressed by RSB, I wouldn't bother with Club 8. Personally, i really
enjoy them both! A twee breed of indiepop that has no qualms about being
*pop*, forgoing the intrusions of distortion pedals and other such
ornamentation that would be, well, out of place. imho, they get a bit *too*
cutsie at times; it can be too much. Female/Male duets on both, with keyboard
and synth beats aplenty. Leave rock expectations at the door, and let their
sweetness woo....
As far as being a one-hit wonder, it seems too hard to judge what's a hit
on a relatively obscure level. Club 8 are a relatively recent band, compared
to, say, RSB. They released a few 7" singles, I think (at least one, I know),
and if I remember correctly, have a full-length release, "Nouvelle", on
Siesta records. The people I've spoken to who own it like it, and I enjoyed
it as well.
Are there any aBLe enthusiasts out there, now that we're on the subject?
I enjoyed "prestigeless lovesounds", and when I chatted with Jorgen of
Cloudberry Jam about 6 months or so ago, he said he was producing the new
album. any word on that?

Both Club 8 and Red Sleeping Beauty have been thoroughly discussed
on the list - some time ago, but as RSB are no more, and Club 8 hasn't
really done anything lately to ignite a discussion, I'm not sure what
to write about now, when it comes to these bands? But here goes -
anyone seen Club 8 play live?

Oh, don't you say that! RSB was one of Sweden's finest (if not _The_
finest) twee-pop bands. I have a feeling, though, that I'm not the
fella' with the most info on RSB on this list... from what I understand
there's at least one band member on the list, and my "RSB mentor" Kimmo
can hopefully supply all the necessary information. Right Kimmo?

Yes, even sentences! ;) There's also at least one aBLe member on the list..
But the short story is - the album is recorded but not quite mixed yet. They
don't have the same sound this time though. No electric guitars, rather
strings, banjos, and Henke from Cloudberry Jam on keyboards (yaay! ;)) and
they have put their energy behind the lyrics, choirs and the melodies.
That's about all I know right now.

Wait a second - what happened to Crescent Venus? Not that I'm complaining,
but CV is (was?) one of my favourite Swedish indie pop bands. You _are_
the M.Fant who play(ed?) in CV, aren't you?
In any case, I'm glued to the radio on saturday! ;)

It's not easy, that's for sure - and everything takes about 100 times
longer to do, but I can't just stay away (managed to catch the flu
at the same time as this muscle-<bad word>, so I'm really _down_ at
the moment).

And if you're one of those who like to be heard and seen on national
radio and television, this is a gig to go to. Both SVT (Swedish national
Public Service (kind of) TV) "Musikbyran" and P3 Live (radio) will
be there to get the whole thing down on tapes of different kinds.
Apparently the TV recording will be seen on the next Musikbyran
(February 25th) and the Radio one will be broadcast on March 5th.
