You could take a work at a fish factory, a very indie job, remember
Olle Ljungstrom (ex Reeperbahn) and a few other who went on exile from
Sweden to earn some money...

But I suggestyou should come to sweden, to enjoy more of the indie
scene. You'd be bored after a week on that rocky islet ;-)

I have talked to the root:s here now about the problem with some
people not receiving the messages they post to the list and their
explanation is as follows:

"This is a known problem. No one has been able to explain it.
We have checked the configuration for sendmail, and this
should not happen."

Which means that it is a problem with sendmail here at Lysator.
Anyone on the list with experience with sendmail?

Well, you know, it might just be me that turns out to be one of those guys
I, myself, tend to hate: the conservatives who think that you should not
mix synth music with anything else ;-). On the other hand - I like LUDOX
and I loved FIDGETs cover version of "Living on video" (originally by
TRANS-X) which they played at Herrgarn last night (a review of that night
might show up here later on, but I will be quite busy for a couple of days
ahead. Actually I do not even have time to write this. And when it comes to
THE DROWNERS gig at Herrgarn Erik will have to take care of the reviewing,
I will nog be able to go there. And do not forget: everything in
parentheses is a lie!:-).

Subject: UCP, Fireside and Swedish defeat

Well first on a breif note from the Swedish colony here in NYC, the causes
of Swedish nationalism were dealt a devastating blow on Sunday as a
Sweden's team had their asses handed to them by the Norwegians in an
occasionally vicious non-pro soccer match (final score Norway 11 Sweden 3).
Hey, we tried (and were considerably more stylish!)...

But on a more related note, I'm wondering if anyone know's what the deals
are with getting Fireside and Union Carbide Production's stuff here in the
states? I know Fireside's Do Not Tailgate was released by American
Records, a label which I hear has since ceased to exist. Who, if anyone,
is releasing their stuff here now?

As far as UCP go, I've been reading little bits and pieces of praise about
them from various American magazines (the fairly big Alternative Press
mentioned them a bunch of times in a single issue recently) but I haven't
been able to find any of their stuff at any of the more "with it" record
stores around here. Do they have any kind of a distribution deal over here
or am I doomed to have to plunk down mad cash on a mail-ordered copy?

thanks for any info!

take care,

Can't answer for the US market, but i was baffled to find three UCP
CD:s in Brussels, Belgium last weekend. The new collection, In the air
tonight and "the black one with a flower" were even sold as nice price
in one store!

LAÏLA AMEZIAN - "INITIAL"
siesta 62 CD
release date: 21.10.97
--------------------------------------------------------------
"ARRANGED, COMPOSED AND PRODUCED BY LOUIS PHILIPPE "
"WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF SEAN O'HAGAN, SPIKE, DANNY MANNERS,
STUART MOXHAM, DEAN BRODRICK, BOSCO DE OLIVEIRA, THE COVENT GARDEN STRINGS
ENSEMBLE ." "THIS ALBUM CONTAINS NEW MIXES AND SONGS FROM THE ORIGINAL
J-VERSION"
_____________________________________________________________
Born 28 years ago, Laïla Amezian is born in Belgium from Morroian
parents, she lives in Brussels and she has always been in a musical
environment. When she was a child she listened her mother singing
koranic texts which is called "psalmody" in the Arabic culture. Her
mother was singing not only at home but also for occasions like
weddings where she used to be invited to sing. Laïla feels that her
mother transmitted to her the essential energy of the music. Laïla
said that she always had inside of her the singing desire. She used to
sing at school, etc. Every occasion was a chance to sing. Therefore,
after her secondary school studies, she naturally goes to the music
school "Les Ateliers de la Chanson" in Brussels. Her teacher was
Claude Sernal and he teached interpretation. What Laïla liked very
much in "Les Ateliers de Chanson" is that the student starts
immediately with live experience and must then meet with the public.
"Les Ateliers de la Chanson" is also famous school in Paris because
many well-known French singers studied there. Musically, her
influences are: Nina Simone, Oum Khaltourn. Nina Simone was a real
revelation for her. For Laïla, what is important is that she is very
careful with the sound's research and with the lyrics and, as an
artist, she's considering herself like a musical mix between tradition
and modern musical influences, more innovative, featuring the
tomorrow's generation. More than simply a job, singing is for Laïla a
way of life. She puts her emotions and personality into the music and
the music should be in total harmony with her feelings. Laïla is also
working part-time in second hand music shop because for her it's
necessary to live in musical environment. Additionnaly she's taking
private singing lessons and rhythm classes and used also to appear as
backing vocalist for different groups (live and in the studio). Apart
from the album "Initial", Laïla is actually exploring composition in
different musical fields and works on those with musicians. In 1995,
she met with Joëlle Dagry and Benoit Hennebert (Pretty Inside) and
they decide to record a demo tape. They took then contact with
Philippe Auclair, also known as Louis Philippe, and he composed and
wrote 3 songs for Laïla which were recorded as demo tape in London in
September 95. The demo was presented to Japaneses record companies in
the following months, a deal was signed with JVC Japan and an album
was recorded in Chiswick Reach Studios in London during the summer
1996. For the mix of "Initial", contact was taken with Dennis Bovell
who accepted the job and Laïla was pleased to meet Jamaïqua, reggae
rhythms and feeling, somewhere in Brixton (London) in Sparkside
Studios. What a story: from Morroco to Belgium, from Belgium to
London, from Jamaican London to Japan. Many countries into one record!
It's probably not necessary to say this but the result is a subtle mix
of cultures. but also of musical influences. A real bridge has been
crossed successfully between the bossa nova / jazz / ballads
compositions and arrangements of Louis Philippe, the mixing power of
Mr. Bovell and Laïla's own musical sensibility and unique voice. But a
record success is not enough and what a pleasure to be able to
perform! What happened is a little bit a fairy-tale: Laïla got the
chance to perform two times at the Jazz Cafe in London. Very good
result for a totally unknown singer on UK's market. Let's say that
it's just the beginning.

It will be released in November here in Sweden, on the 7th I think,
and will be called "Stand Up And Testify". A new single has been
released, "Dry Spot".

That's right! The release date of the album is 20th of November. The first
single was released about a week ago.

I've a copy of album - it's called "Stand up and testify" and sounds quite
different from their earlier albums. Andreas Mattsson is using his voice
in a much better way!

Popsicle's release party is going to be held at Mejeriet in Lund, november
15 i think and the first tour date is set to november 20 at KTH in stockholm.

thanks!

I sure hope it sounds different from the last album. I was worried when I
heard "Dry spot" and thought that it sounded just like anything from the
"s/t" album. Even if I cannot say that I like the way POPSICLE have
developed after "Lacquer" very much they should have cred for that they
have changed their sound between the albums, a sign that there is still a
"creative flame" in the band. So I hope they continue and, perhaps, come up
with something more interesting than the last album.

Btw, I read something strange in an interview with Andreas Mattsson in DN.
He claimed that he had "felt too good" lately, so he had to "force himself
into the right (depressive) mood" before he could write the songs for the
new album. Would it not be much easier, not to say more trustworthy, just
to write about how you really feel? But I do not know anything about how to
write songs so I guess I should be quiet.

Subject: Darling tour review

A review from a gig last week. Or, actually it was three gigs. The Darling
Tour visited Herrgarn, giving us three bands with one thing in common:
Girls/women as important band members. There should have been four bands
but FIVEL cancelled.

The first two bands, HONEYCAVE and LOUDEAN, did not make any deeper
impression on me. I guess I may be stirring up feelings now but to me this
sounded like too much "standard indie pop". HONEYCAVE were the best of
those two, with a female vocalist who was a quite intense stage
personality. Also, they used one of my favourite pop/rock instruments: a
violin (am I the only one who thinks that both THIS PERFECT DAY and THE
WANNADIES were much better before they dropped the violins?). LOUDEAN
seemed to suffer from the "more attitude than music" syndrome. I remember
how they looked, black clothes and black make-up, but not how they sounded
(which, of course, also must mean that they were not extremely lousy,
because I would have remembered that).

I was worried before FIDGET entered the stage. I had read a quite
depressing review of their Stockholm gig and I also wondered if I could
stand a whole concert with Nina Natris "Bjork meets Jakob Hellman" way of
singing. After a couple of minutes I felt like a complete fool for having
ever doubted. Full speed ahead, without any brakes. After about ten minutes
they had played both their singles, "Semi-naked" and "Stop losing". And
they continued with one of the best covers I have ever heard, by a
guitar-based band, on a synth tune. I actually thought that I was the only
person who still remembered TRANS-Xs old piece of synth-disco mania "Living
on video" but here it was, much better that the original. This was a
terrific gig and the audience sighed loudly when it was clear to them that
there would be no encores. One guy even yelled at the DJ who started the
disco before the band had even left the stage. A huge drawback with these
"package tours", I guess, is that it is probably decided on beforehand how
long each band is allowed to play. A pity, really, after such a great
concert (and especially since, when the entrance fee was decided upon,
there was meant to be four bands but we only got three for the same
price!!).

/Micke, looking forward to Vasterviks revenge on Linkoping next weekend

As far as I recall, most of the members of Port Friendly used to be in a
band called Charlie Rex, which played really quiet, country inspired music
in the same ballpark as Palace Brothers. Haven't heard PF yet, though, so i
don't know what they sound like. The label is called 'Cloudland'.

-- It would be very easy to fall into the trap of evoking the
paradisiacal, parrot-filled beaches of Brazil. But this is no Bounty
ad. Arabesque's music goes far beyond this, as it is an amalgam of
the most refined sounds imaginable. Cherry Red, El, Astrud Gilberto,
Jobim.are all blended here in with a style and beauty that endures.
The single is as breathtaking in 1997 as it would have been ten,
twenty or even thirty years ago. It is a gem.

Let's not forget that this group is an offshoot of Blueboy, who have
shown time and time again that they are capable of producing some of
the best records ever released by an independent label. And Arabesque
keeps firmly on course, in their song tracks and instrumental numbers
that will make the needle on your record player melt.

And who better than Siesta to release these tracks as they are famous
for their polished handling of content and form. Singles like this
are their trademark.. exquisite music for very demanding palates. If

Subject: recent messages

Oh I have just too many messages posted to the list last week to comment
on to be able to do it properly at the moment. Here are a few short
thoughts though...

The Drowners gig - well, umm, I feel sorry for them actually. They have
fallen into the Tracks-trap, and based their whole gig on their hit song
and the song that was just entering the Tracks list. Something they
found out isnt't the radio show the usual thursday Herrgar'n audience
listen and relate to. I suppose they have their audience, but it's not
the 18+ crowd these days.

I have numerous things to write about the Darling tour gig, but I
simply do not have the time now. I'd like to say that I agree with
Micke on the fact that Fidget did their absolute best gig ever that
night - and from what I heard, that's what they wanted to do as well,
especially after the bad Stockholm gig review. Disagree with the
things you wrote about Loudean - I thought they were amazing,
especially the guy on guitar, he really knew what he was doing with
his instrument. A pity the girls in the band get all the attention,
because in this case, he's the one who deserves it the most. The
band as a whole was great (IMHO) - and I was a bit surprised they
had been signed to a MNW label (Soap, right?) as they (MNW) hasn't
really been that interesting lately. Something that'll change with
this band I'm certain. Actually bought their EP there that night
as well - though I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (and
that was two weeks ago...). Agree on Honeycave - they were great,
but it was too early for the audience to "dare" to show they liked
the music I suppose. Maria Enzell (the singer) said that they
didn't mind, after the show - "that's what you can expect when
you're the opening act, and on top of that, the 'extra' band"
(as they are not a part of the tour). And sadly, Fivel had to
cancel because of a death in the family of one of the members.

Fireside and Union Carbide - Fireside does not have a "set"
distribution deal in the US yet, but they are working on it
(with Rick Rubin again if my sources are correct). I have no
idea if the Union Carbide catalogue is/will be available
in the US, sorry.

Vobler - Virgin Records new "Kent". Yeah - everyone in the music
"business" I've talked to lately (sounds impressive doesn't it? :-))
have mentioned this band, and what a success they are... I haven't
heard them myself, so I can't really say what I think of them myself.
Guess it's time to check out the singles section.

BOB at Herrgar'n tonight - yes yes yes yes! This will surely be
one interesting evening. Love the two demo tapes I have - and
it will be interesting to see and hear them live. As one of the
members live in Linkoping nowadays, I suppose they're somewhat
of a local act.

New Popsicle album. Yes - as others have written, it's called
"Stand Up And Testify", but I'm not sure any of the release
dates posted to the list is the correct one? The release info
that came with the promo didn't say anything about a release
date for the album in fact - only that the next single will be
"The Price We Pay", and that the album will be released shortly
after that. Does anyone know if that single is out now? If
someone knows the album release date for sure - please post it,
thanks!

A review of the album will be written and posted as soon as..
well, you know me... after a first listen to it, I'd say that
it's way better than their last one at least (except the two
last songs which I can't understand why they included because
they're *so* boring and completely lacking any kind or form
of heart). Loved Lacquer, hated "Popsicle", "Stand Up And
Testify" is okay.

Unun - thanks John for posting the info! I actually saw the band
at the Roskilde Festival this summer, and I rate their gig as
the best of them all. I wish I had written down all the things
I said about it there and then, and posted it to the list, but
I didn't have a chance. They were stunning at least - and I
loved every minute of it (almost - the song (sorry, don't know
any titles) made out of bone-crunching erratic noise didn't
really appeal to me). So I really hope their album (and
singles) will be released here as well. Though I have no idea
if Deceptive Records have distribution in Sweden? Anyone?
If not, it'll be another expensive import... though it'll
probably be worth it. :-)

There - now I have to get some sleep, go to work - work,
go and see BOB tonight, get some sleep, go to work and then
I'll be back again. Hopefully to move the list to the automatic
mailing list server, post some updated lists of various
sorts, round up the tape chain, start the Robot contest,
review a couple of records/demos, announce the Wellmeant
homepage, post a today's news which will be a this and
last week's news and.. Hmm, well, let's just see what
happens. ;-)

Subject: another darling tour review.....

LOUDEAN/FIVEL/FIDGET - HARRY'S, Göteborg (last sunday, sorry
for the slight delay.... exams, you know)

I don't complain easy but you've got to admit that Göteborg
isn't exactly the most exiting town in Western-Europa. So, it
took me exactly two months since I moved here from Amsterdam,
the Netherlands, to go and see my first live-concert (I must
admit there were some rather interesting things in the mean
time that i decided not to go to, like Fuck or No Fun At All)
It may have something to do with not seeing any livebands for
two months, but I quite enjoyed myself....

Anyway, first band is LOUDEAN. The only band I had heard nothing
of beforehand but I think I liked them best of all three bands.
Sounded a bit like Bettie Serveert, but with more up-tempo and
catchy tunes. The singer almost turned into a blond Alanis Mori-
sette when she didn't play guitar, but luckily that only happe-
ned in two songs (intermezzo: it was nice that the bands only
played for 20-25 minutes each, that's exactly enough for bands
like this. In the Netherlands bands often want to give the au-
dience 'value for money' by playing for 45 minutes to one hour.
which quite often isn't exactly a pleasant thing. back to the
review...). And having a tambourine in a couple of songs is al-
ways a good thing, in my humble opinion.

FIVEL were somehat louder and had somewhat less catchy tunes.
But still not bad. Somewhere between Sleeper and Hole, and I
even recognized some songs from listening quickly to the album
earlier that day. They should do something about that guitar-
player though because he looked a bit out of place, stylewise,
and acted a bit like he was in ac/dc....

Last band were FIDGET, who sound a bit like what would've ha-
ppened if Sleeper borrowed the keyboards from Bis. To be honest
about half of the songs sounded a lot like their most recent
single Figure For Leglock (why did they have a remix of the
song as track 1 on the single?? 'cause when i first heard that
version I thought it was some horrible Eurodisco and I only
learned to appreciate the remix after hearing the 'normal' song
on track 2....) so now especially it was a good thing that they
didn't play any longer (altough an encore would've been nice,
the audience certainly wouldn't have minded). They also did
some cover of some song everybody else in the audience knew
except me, so maybe it's some swedish thing. But I definitely
liked them and thought they were funny, even I didn't under-
stand anything of the stuff they said between the songs...

I thought I heard something by Vobler on the radio. Didn't like it
much though, it had lots of echo on the singer's voice so it sounded
like some dodgy 80's US (or swedish...) heavy metal act.

Also heard a big-beat-type remix of that Kent-song. Thought it was
very nice, sounded a bit like the manic street preachers this way.

What a relief! Does this really mean that I am not alone? That I am not the
only one that do not understand one thing when I read all the reviews of
"World record player" (latest album from THE DROWNERS). Every reviewer
claims that it is either "great", "very promising" and someone even wrote
"the future of Swedish pop". Have I just been dreaming that ten years have
passed, is it still 1987. It must be, otherwise I am deeply worried about
"the future of Swedish pop". All I hear when I listen to the album is a
bunch of "ideas" that far too many artists have already used to produce far
too many songs. Nothing new, just pale copies. I can hear one song sounding
like BLUR, one like THIS PERFECT DAY, one like WILMER X (!!) etc. According
to their record company they have "found inspiration from lots of different
sources". Yes, I can hear that. But I think it would have been a lot more
interesting if they had mixed all these inspirational sources together into
a completely new sound, instead of making one song each for every source!

/Micke, preferring BELLE & SEBASTIAN "Century of fakers" instead of THE
DROWNERS "Fake r&r personality"

Subject: Bob review

I have said and written quite a few positive things about the Herrgarn
(Linkoping) audience but I am prepared to take it all back after last
night. When BOB (THE BOBBY EWING FAMILY) played the place was crowded with
people. About two thirds of them did not even bother to listen to how the
band sounded, they had come just to get drunk and, consequently, stayed in
the bar. About half of those who placed themselves in front of the stage
left after a short while (but OK, they gave the band a chance so I am not
mad at them for not liking the band, of course). Part of the problem might
have been the posters that the Herrgarn staff had put up. They did not give
any good clue of how BOB sounds. The sound was described as "distorted
guitar pop" only, and when I hear the term "pop" without any further
specifications than this I think of something catchy and, perhaps, cheerful.

So I can say it directly. If you find anything cheerful in BOBs music you
should see a shrink immediately. This is how NIRVANAs "Something in the
way" would have sounded if all three of them had been suicidal (though it
is just the music, noone in BOB is suicidal, as far as I know). At first
the music is suggestive, dark, slow, rather quiet and in the background of
Johann Krantz voice singing words like "Jesus loves all but me/ God will
save all but me". And then, when you close your eyes and dream away,
WOOAAHH - roaring guitars attack your ear drums with full strength and then
disappear as sudden as they arrived.

One problem might be that all songs are built up in the same way, even if
the harmonies and sounds differ slightly it gets quite predictable after a
while. But I say nothing more negative than that. I like this band and I
think that they, under the circumstances, did a good gig last night. It was
obvious that they have played/rehearsed much together, since most of the
"effects" in their music is based upon at least four guys (there is also a
fifth member: Rebecca Bond on keyboards) - two guitars, bass guitar and
drums - playing their instruments with full attack at exactly the same
moment and there were no mistakes in that respect. This was a gig that
definitely deserved a larger audience.

Finally, if you would like to hear more from one of the best unsigned bands
in Sweden right now, why not e-mail them and ask if they have any demo
tapes left for sale. Definitely worth the money. Here you are:

so by accident, I ended up at the Chalmers University Halloween
Party without actually paying for it (I was working at the studio
of the Studentradio in the same building and when I was done there
and got downstairs I found myself in the middle of it....)

anyway, caught about 45 minutes of FIRESIDE who were actually not
bad at all. Lovely, noisy, dissonant guitarpop, sometimes maybe a
bit too heavy metal, but I think that's something that comes auto-
matically with this sort of music...

And after listening to the dj for a while trying to play a record
all the way to the end without 'skipping' somewhere and desperately
failing at it (and it's bloody hard too dance to it, i can tell)
it was time for the HELLACOPTERS. A band I heard a lot about, but
nothing actually from. I was suspecting something a bit more punk
but we got something a lot more RAWK. Not bad, and it was nice to
see the organ-player, but I don't think I heard hime one second.
The songs were all a bit too long though I thought...

the audience was quite terrible by the way. Maybe it was because
it was a gig at the university (student-only even??) but there were
a lot of people who obviously didn't come here to see the bands
but to get very drunk (I know it was a 'party with bands' and not
an actual 'festival' or something, but still). And altough it was
sold out it defenitely didn't look that way by the time the 'copters
took the stage (at 1). But still, i would say as a typical dutch-
man, it was free.....
