Perhaps a bit late now (I'll start to receive my mail on a minute-to-
minute basis starting next week), but no, I'm afraid that 22.00-03.00
was all the time information I got.

Yes, it would be interesting to hear what they sound like nowadays
(and who their guests were), so if you're going and have the time,
I'd appreciate it (and I believe others will too).

Hmm, I have added the new bob hund releases to the "upcoming releases"
page (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/upcoming.html) and as far
as I know, it will be one CD-EP and one 2x7".

The release date mentioned is 17/11 (ie. on monday) and the track
listing is as follows:

1. Ett fall & en losning (a case and a solution)
2. Tillbaks pa ruta ett (back on square one)
3. Rock'n'roll tar dod pa mig (rock'n'roll will kill me)
4. Noden kraver handling (need demands action)
5. Rock'n'roll tar dod pa mig igen (rock'n'roll will kill me again)

(translations might not be the best ones, but hey, I'm Swedish! ;-))

The title seems to be "Rock'n'Roll Tar Dod Pa Mig". It was produced
by Nille Perned according to their label, Silence Records.
And apparently, they will show up on the TV show "Let's Go" on
Swedish channel TV2, Nike on Swedish channel TV1 and ZTV's
"Hemma hos Johanna Westman" during November (ie. now) - so I expect
all of these TV appearences will be next week or the week after
that. Let's check out the TV Guide tomorrow. :-)

According to what I was told the other day, "the first track is a
dead cool version of Pere Ubu's Final Solution." Which title didn't
exactly ring a bell with me, but I'm all for it anyway.

Once again there is some confusion about release dates, I think. Dont know
which alternative is correct but I have received som info from The Cable
Cabal which claims that the release date for the EP is November 27th.

There will also be a video, directed by Patrik Arve (TEDDYBEARS STHLM),
featuring the song "Ett fall och en losning" (the PERE UBU song - now with
Swedish lyrics.

Just checked the site, and you're right. Hmm, well as that is "newer news"

And all I can say is AMEN to that. When I confronted the band with the
fact, they said they wanted their music to be loud, and that was that.
They did understand why no one dared to stand closer than a couple of
meters away from the stage because of the volume though. My ears were
ringing all friday and half saturday, and I was not the one closest
to the stage...

Today's good news in a bundle - that's right, right here, right now.

* Emmaboda Festival organizers start new label?
---------------------------------------------
Absurd Records seems to be a new label started by Vinterbadarna
who also are the organizers of the Emmaboda Festival. Their in-the-
works website reveals releases with Sideshow Bob (lo-fi princes,
right after Loosegoats) and list-favourites Sobsister. Check it out
at: http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-50177/html/projekt.htm

* GarageZone - new place for unsigned Swedish bands
-------------------------------------------------
A new site dedicated to unsigned Swedish bands (in genres:
pop, rock, ska, punk and metal) is on the way. It is called
GarageZone and will only contain material from/about/with
Swedish (and once again, _unsigned_) bands. 20-30 MB free
disk space on the server / band - and as it is a non-profit
project, no fees.

In case you're interested and want to learn more about it,
go to: http://hem.passagen.se/wigren/garagezone.html

* The Autumn Fonogram Money Distributed (Topp40)
-------------------------------------
The State Culture Council has distributed the autumn fonogram
grants, and here are the more interesting ones:

Record Company/Label Artist Amount
Birdnest Eclipse 70.000
MNW Triakel 70.000
North Of No South Friend 60.000
Vibrafon Freewheel 70.000
Vibrafon Werup/Holmqvist 70.000

* Norrans Popfest in Skelleftehamn (Topp40)
--------------------------------
The local daily paper Norra Vasterbotten, record company A West
Side Fabrication and youth center Kaken arranges the "Norrans
Popfest" in Skelleftehamn (15 kilometers from Skelleftea city
center) on November 22nd for the third year in a row.

The Popfest is a talent hunt "competition". Unsigned bands in the
area play live in between more known acts, the winners are then
decided and they get to release a record on A West Side Fabrication.

Previous winners were: 1995 The All Janet, 1996: Sahara Hotnights.

Playing but not competing bands this year are: This Perfect Day,
Fireside, The Drowners, Sahara Hotnights, Purusam + one band yet
to be announced.

* This week's interesting Releases
--------------------------------
Date Artist/Band Title Form Label

17/11 Leslies Of Today - For Today CD Harry Lime
17/11 Sideshow Bob Bored Beyond Belief CD5 Absurd Records
23/11 Cloudberry Jam The Impossible Shuffle CD Quattro (JAP)

* New Bands on Tour
-----------------
Just way too many to include here, take a look at the Gig Guide
pages on the Scandinavian Indie website. To mention a few personal
favourites: Coo (SF), Cucumber Farmer (SF) and Candysuck (S).

Added dates: A hectic winter for Kent (S), new dates for Fireside (S),
Mopeds (S) and more. Calle Dernulf (DJ) will not play
on all the Popstad tour dates.

I've heard good things about Carpet People and Cobolt, but I've never
actually heard (or seen) either of them. Maybe someone on the list can
give me some more info? (E.g. what do they sound like, are they any good,
are they good live bands etc.)

K-Pist I've only heard really bad things about, so I doubt someone on
this list will be able to change my opinions on them, but feel free to
give it a try if you want... :)

PS. And if someone knows something about Ward J Little (who is/are supporting
Yo La Tengo in Stockholm to night, a show noone in the area should miss...),
that would be of interest too. DS.

I have never seen any of them play live and I have not heard very much with
COBOLT, except that they sound a lot like RED HOUSE PAINTERS and that the
members come from bands that usually play much tougher music (like REFUSED).

CARPET PEOPLE are very good, IMO. At least their "Volley u make" album from
last year was. "lo-fi for dark autumn nights" might be one way of
describing their sound. An "almost unplugged" DINOSAUR JR might be another.

>K-Pist I've only heard really bad things about, so I doubt someone on

Strange, I have almost only heard positive things about this band.
Nojesguiden gave it a bad review but that magazine seems to have as a goal
just to write the opposite of what everyone else writes. And honestly - how
many Swedish bands are there that have a sound of their own, a sound which
they have not copied exactly from some foreign model? IMO rap, drums and
synthesizers is a fascinating mix, at least it is so on K-PISTs "Voltage
controlled" album. Besides, they rock much harder than many bands with
guitars. Kind of as if Zak Tell (CLAWFINGER) or Zack de la Rocha (RAGE
AGAINST THE MACHINE) had been vocalist in early DEPECHE MODE, or something
:-).

/Micke, shaken and stirred after having seen "Tictac" by Daniel Alfredson
(if someone had told me, 24 hours ago, that a couple of young swedes could
do a "Pulp Fiction"-inspired movie which is much better than "Pulp Fiction"
I would have considered this someone a complete freak. I was wrong! Go see
it and you may spend several hours thinking about whether your views
(prejudice?) about people and things around you might be totally wrong)

I think Swedish radio channel P3 will record some gig and then transmit it
afterwards, on December 11th. But as the programme is only 1 hour I guess
it will only be a few songs by each band in it.

No, the P3 Live tonight is from the party held when Umea celebrated
receiving the Popstad 97 "award", but I suspect Cobolt did play there
as well.

I also felt a need to tell you about this excellent new band, from Umea,
and their "Onion" demo. IMO this demo is better than much of what is
released on records at the moment.

The first reference I come to think of is THE JAM (before they became more
of a soul rock band). There are differences, of course. Both vocalists in
MICHAEL GREENE have bright voices; there are two guitars, which means less
space for the bass guitar, compared to JAM; cynicism is not as important as
in Wellers texts and where it appears it is directed towards the
relationship between two people instead of against society in general.
Otherwise, I can hear both JAM and other "mod pop/rock" bands in MG:s
sound. Guitar pop/rock, sometimes with a "soul groove" in it. And it sounds
much better than most other "neo-mod pop" bands that pops up everywhere in
Sweden right now.

I tried to do something else at the same time as I listened to this tape
for the first time, but it was impossible. The songs on the a-side - "For
fun", "Pearls" and "I believe" - got stuck in my brain immediately. And
they still are. I must have listened to them about 40-50 times by now but I
dont seem to get tired with them. The three songs on the b-side is more
"groove rock", while the a-side is rather poppy, and I dont like the b-side
songs that much, even if they are not bad at all. But the a-side would have
been an excellent single, I hope it will become one in the future.

This is something I've always been kind of curious about. On a lot of
Swedish CD's I've bought it's said something along the lines of "sponsored
by the swedish council for cultural affairs" and I've always wondered how
this works. What kind of basis do they give money out on and how can it be
used? None of this actually applies to me I guess but the thought of the
government giving bands money is such a wildly cool idea to me that I sorta
want to know more...

thanks for your help,
Martin the dislocated Swede...

I could always create a comp of Norwegian "indie" bands - in fact that's
a great idea, but you need to inform me how this chain-thing works.
