Subject: News from Estonia...

Sally Cinnamon Music - small label from Tartu/Estonia has released a second
compilation
tape of Estonian underground "Sue Darling is back to meet Forwards" - a
logical follow-up
to the "Sue Darling" (released in 1993). At that time another bunch of
Estonian unsigned
bands were recorded for the "Sue Darling 2", but due to the financial
problems Sally couldn´t release it. "Sue Darling is back to meet Forwards"
includes eight bands recorded in 1993 -

Sue´s Side

1. the Chance - Remember theTime

2. Anacrones - Venus
3. Delusion - A Dream About You
4. Beat Boy - Girl
5. Karpeetor - Piping Frogman
6. Psychoterror - Ebanormaalne
7. Tik - T.A.K.E.
8. Afternooning
Plague Family - Sue´s Seeds

as well as eight bands recorded in 1996/97 in Forwards Studio -

Forwards´ Side

1. Isadora Flore - Make Up & Martini
2. the Chance - The Way Your Mind Looks Through
3. Nyrok City - Watcha Back
4. Bizarre - Barcode Warrior 12
5. Pedigree - Red Angel Case
6. Flag - New Gear
7. von Suck - Vajuv Vesi
8. A.P.F. & Bizarre - Laizy Sun

Actually the instrumental part of 'Laizy Sun' was recorded by
Afternooning Plaque Family in 1993 & the vocals added by Bizarre
in summer 1997.

Any questions & suggestions send please to: lauri@forwards.ee

More information about Sally Cinnamon will be soon available in:

NOW - the list is working okay again.

The subscribers of the Digest list will receive a pretty strange first
Digest this time due to the fact that I had set the access variables
to a couple of files for the new automatic mail server wrong - but
they have to live with that. From now on, they will receive all the
messages as is. It took me 2 hours (and I probably missed half of tjhe
S.P.O.C.K concert) to find the tiny tiny bug. But it was worth it.

Let's post! ;-)

hi,
trying the new list!

i've listened to kents new album isola today, and i know next week we will
have reasons the discuss it on this list:

just like to say its their best by far and i consider it one of best
swedish albums this year, great songs through out the whole album, even the
slow ones..also a much bigger and more dynamic sound (radiohead-ish?)????

and they gave up the suits this time around!

Motorpsycho "Angles & Demons At Play", CD
Stickman Records/Birdnest, 1997

Norwegian three-piece who did an awesome appearance at last years
Arvika-festival. Seems to have gone through
some slightly changes here,
from that guitar-based, "lo-fi" thing we
received on their last album
"Blizzard" to the more innovative and
varied sound of "Angles &
Demons At Play".
The title itself is excellent, in fact
it says something about what's going
on here. Motorpsycho still have their
influences on the other side of the
Atlantic ocean. But with "Angles..." they
take a small step away from
that noisy, uncurled guitar-pop, to some
extent towards the sound of
bands like Fugazi and Sonic Youth.
This is not easy listening and the fact
that the voice's kind of lame, that
there's not much of a personality shown,
doesn't make it easier. It sure
takes some time before the melodies get to
you, and even then some of
the material feels a bit divided, like
there's to many possible ways to go
but nobody knows exactly which one to
choose. But that could be a
challenge, if you're willing to accept it.

I have heard that "Me First & the Gimme Gimmes" will also be playing, and
another band which I can't remember.

The Dwarves are fun kick ass punk, from the USA, they are known to play
very short sets, (ca 20 min) that probally why there are a lot of bands
playing.

it cost only 60 or 70kr.

According to their record companys, Silence Records, home page (can be
found at www.cabal.se) BOB HUND are supposed to release a three-track CD,
produced by Nille Perned, in early November. No further info is given.
Also, it seems as if there might be a new full-length album out early next

Another thursday and another gig at Herrgarn. But a quite extraordinary one
this time. Those of you who have been to a S.P.O.C.K (the dots left out
from now on) gig know what I mean - I have never heard of a gig where this
space synth trio has played at a less than over-crowded venue.

So I was prepared, but that didnt help. My mouth went wide open when I
found Herrgarn in total chaos three hours (!!) before the gig: people
everywhere and the sweat flushing down on the personnel. Someone had even
made a model of starship Enterprise which he carried around and later
handed over to the band. One hour before the gig the space (!) in front of
the stage was filled with people singing, shouting and showing the "spock
sign" in the air. Before the gig started the, usually very timid, Herrgarn
audience also managed to knock down the fence in front of stage and during
the gig the band had to take a short break to ease the pressure for those
people standing in the front row.

For uninvited I guess this may sound like a SPICE GIRLS concert but there
is one difference: SPOCK has never been close to any hit lists and they
probably never will. This is a cult happening and, especially, a _live_
happening. The music is not very exciting and most songs sound the same:
light and catchy synth pop tunes with texts about Star Trek, ET:s and why
klingons cannot be trusted. Their records will never go to history as
high-qualitative and/or exciting but live we are talking something
completely different. Every inch of Herrgarn was filled with people (my
guess is that there were more than 300 people, which is supposed to be the
upper limit at Herrgarn) bouncing to the music and during the "hits" - "ET
phone home", "Astro girl", "Alien attack" and "Never trust a klingon" - the
crowd sang louder than the band. We also got a hilarious synth pop version
of TWISTED SISTERs "Were not gonna take it".

Add to it that SPOCK is one of the few bands that really tries to establish
contact with the audience - telling witty jokes, anecdotes etc - and this
is certainly entertainment, and mass hysteria, well worth the money. You
might probably lose some weight through perspiaration, too.

/Micke, puzzled over why the sweater he wore at the SPOCK gig was one inch
longer after the gig than it was before??

I read in "Popoga" that there might be a solution coming up, concerning the

a great band should have such difficulties to get a distribution deal for

Subject: Shallow/Swoon demo review

SWOON from Kumla - the band formerly known as SHALLOW - celebrated their
new name by releasing a demo tape a couple of months ago. "Goodsign ep" is
the title of it. SWOON/SHALLOW is one of those bands that have been placed
in the "dreampop"/shoegaze genre with references like RIDE, MY BLOODY
VALENTINE and CHAPTERHOUSE. But this new demo shows a quite wide variety in
sound. It contains four songs which all sound quite different from one
another. But of course, if you have listened to any of their first two
demos, you will still recognize the band.

"Goodsign" is a quite happy-sounding, up-tempo song which reminds about the
Manchester scene from the early 90s, with the same groove in it. A good
song; as usual this band manages to put the best song first on the tape.
"Cerebral" is even more up-tempo (I guess it is speed metal in comparison
with how shoegaze music normally sounds) but without the groove and,
therefore, I feel quite indifferent about it. In "Aquanaut" we slow down
and get back to the "dreampop" - suggestive guitars and Ola Ljunggrens
bright voice kind of floating above it. The kind of song that makes you bow
down your head (in my case just to realize that I did not wear any shoes to
gaze at). It is my second-hand favourite on the tape but it does not quite
reach the same heights as the most dreamy songs - "Mendacity grows" and
"Princess Gourgeous" - from their first two tapes ("Shallow" and
"Cerebral"). The last song - "To break my heart" - I do not like very much
at all. You see, when SWOON lists their favourite artists they also mention
J Mascis among them and sometimes they decide to do a "lo-fi shoegaze"
thing. That means that they play their guitars in the most disharmonic way
they can while the vocals are still of the "dreamy" sort, which is the case
in this song. The guitar play does not seem to fit very well with the
vocals either, it sounds like they are performing two different songs, and
when the song ends with several minutes of guitar harrassment my ears start
aching. Perhaps a good song to end gigs with but here it is just boring.

Two good songs and two not as good - an OK demo by a band which is
definitely talented. Perhaps uneven but when they are at their best it
turns out quite nice. "Goodsign" and "Aquanaut" are definitely worth
attention.
