Jeesus, what did I do? I gave a comment on some other postings and told my
view about something. I also said that if someone was _interested_ he/she
could give his/her _own views_, since I could find that interesting. So,
what happened?
Well, many of those who replied did it just to say that they were not
interested!!?. You could have told that much more easily by just keeping
quiet (you were quite good at keeping quiet when I politely asked for
feedback on my reviews some time ago). Thereby we would have saved
bandwidth and time and the whole thing would have just faded away without
any fuss. Besides, am I the only one who feel uncomfortable about that way
of trying to stop discussions - calling them pointless, meaningless,
ridiculous, whatever. Perhaps there are people out there who have wise
things to say but who are afraid of being treated like this and therefore
_they_ keep quiet. In addition there are quite a lot of "discussions" here
that I find meaningless. Like this "is C Af Uggla good or bad" thing. Where
is that supposed to lead? It may be entertaining to read all the opinions
but there is still only one way to find out what _you_ think and I dont
think I need to say what that way is (but it is not through looking at her
social background. This world has already seen enough of misery and
suffering caused by prejudice). But then, if someone really finds this
interesting to discuss, then what right do I, or anyone else, have to say
that it is wrong of them to do it etc.? I dont like doing that and I dont
like others doing it either.
Also, some people only attacked me and my opinions without presenting
something of their own. _That_ is pointless because it will only cause hard
feelings, nothing else, and that is another thing I dont like.
So, thats it! Guess this may sound like one of those morale lessons that
usually ends sitcoms :-). Sorry if I upset someone. Flame this letter if
you like but dont expect any reply. I have better things to do - like
listening to demos, attending concerts, reading Anne Tyler or writing
essays on the importance of mail servers being able to deal with Swedish
characters - than to deal with such things at four in the morning.
Now, lets trash this "discussion" and LETS GET BACK TO BUSINESS AGAIN,
SHALL WE? :-)

Subject: Urban Turban live review
A week ago I said that I was suspicious about this band. Some years ago I
saw them for a few minutes and got the impression that it was more drug
romance than music - weird-coloured spotlites and celebrations to Jerry
Garcias (GRATEFUL DEAD) memory. Anyway, I was wrong. It was great. And, for
once at Herrgarn, a huge and really nice audience too.
Their music is old blues and rock n roll songs (by Ray Charles, Chuck Berry
etc.) dressed in a mixed rock/oriental folk music disguise. May not sound
very exciting but it was, and it was groovy as hell. One of those concerts
when you find yourself, involuntarily, moving with the rhythm. Especially
after a couple of songs, when two palestinian folk musicians joined the
band, playing instruments I dont think I should try to figure out what they
might be called (other instruments used: electric guitars, violin, bag
pipe, harmonica, bass guitar, cymbals and a lot of others). And the
vocalist sounded just like one of those old blues men (almost like Freddie
Wadling but darker voice). This was also a good night to hear hilarious
covers, like the palestinian folk version of Berrys "Too much monkey
business".
Up next week at Herrgarn: yes, it is: The most interesting "tour package of
the year" IMO - Popstad 97, featuring CARPET PEOPLE, COBOLT and K-PIST

Please avoid Nordman at all costs. Their "singer" is a Neanderthal.
They are also using many old Nordic symbols, coming dangerously close
to what the nationalists call "national consciousness".
Swedish bands I can recommend: Kent, Bob Hund, Blissful, Bear Quartet,
Popsicle, Wellmeant, Pineforest Crunch, Petrol, Cardigans and The
Tambureens.

Yes, almost all Bob Hund songs are great! The song you refer to as "Alle
har en bakgrunn" is called "En pratstund" and it is the first song on BH:s
latest album "Bob Hund", also known as "Omslag: Martin Kann".
Actually, Bob Hund has made three records called "Bob Hund". The first one
was a 6- or 7-tracker, containing masterpieces like "Allt pa ett kort",
"Graslok, fagelsang", "Kompromissen", "Fem meter upp i luften" and
"Fotoalbumet". This record is almost too good! If you haven´t heard it,
go look for it right away!
Their second record was an album. (Also called "Bob Hund" of course)
It contains great songs like "Mer an sa kan ingen bli" and "Det skulle
vara latt for mig att saga att jag inte hittar hem men det gor jag,
tror jag". This one's not as good as the first one though.
Then in 1996, they released the EP "Istallet for musik: forvirring",
a masterpiece, followed by the previously mentioned latest album.
So, which Bob Hund record is the best? All of them! Especially the
first one!

Well, Bob Hund are gods. no, i don't mean a re-incarnation of the mighty
Godz, but rather something so great that it deserves the inflation-ridden
word "godly". Bob Hund has songs, they have the sound, and most importantly
they are *amazing* live. most swedish bands are boring because the music and
the people can almost always be explained with one word; "nice". ofcourse if
you happen to like "nice", then you'll definately like everything ever made
in sweden... and i don't mean that there'd be something wrong with "nice", i
just prefer something with life, passion, edges, emotion, and maybe a little
suffering... these swedish guys have never had to crawl in the mud, instead
their parents pay their rent and their trendy Vans sneakers... but Bob
Hund... Bob Hund ist rad.

Of course, Bob Hund play neither krautrock nor teknopop, but they sure give me
the feeling of having listened a lot to Kraftwerk. Jonas, the synthguy, has
borrowed the ability for putting nice, cold but heartful synthtunes together
and make them fit in perfectly with the rest.
Some of the guitarstuff the fab guitarists play have a kind of robotic,
absolutely-non-blues feel to it. So lovely. And there is actually once
when Bob Hund really sound like Kraftwerk as well. The song "Horlurar" on
the Dusseldorf-EP is a fantastic, monotic song with singing through a
vocoder.
With this, if you haven't noticed, I want to stress that musical influences
can be present even if they are not clear or heard.

The precedeor of Alt Nat, 120 minutes, was so much better. They let various
bands host/choose the music for the shows. I recall among others Pavement,
Sonic Youth and Mudhuney playing pretty far out alternative music on their
respective shows. 120 minutes is crap even though they played Motorpsychos
Starmelt some time ago. They should stop playing Oasis, Pulp etc and start
playing Gbv, Polvo, Built To Spill etc. And of course much more Scandinavian
music. (Not Cardigans and Aqua)

Well, they did stop playing OASIS quite a while ago and they have played
both BUILT TO SPILL and GBV (mostly the "Bulldog skin" song, though). Quite
a lot Scandinavian music too (KENT, BOB HUND, JAY-JAY JOHANSON, SLUDGE
NATION, FIRESIDE, LARRY & THE LEFTHANDED, PANASONIC, 22-PISTEPIRKKO,
CYBERMEN, PSYCHED OUT JANIS, WANNADIES, JIMI TENOR, BIOSPHERE, BJORK and
more). And even if the show is not ace I am amazed that MTV even hired a VJ
who had YO LA TENGO, RADAR BROS, STEREOLAB and BOB HUND among his favourite
bands.

I completely agree with you on that one. Paul King did a wonderful job
as the host (really!) and I didn't miss many shows back then. (Though
I did of course miss a few shows I would have killed for - the one
hosted by The Sundays and the two (or maybe three) ones where they
played Slowdive videos - I have yet to see one!). I have never seen
that Ecstasy of S:t Theresa video anywhere but on that show. And the
complete "best of (insert year here)" shows were really filled to the
limit with fantastic music. I taped the complete shows!
Took me a while to get used to Toby Aimes (sp?) but he had his moments.
But then it all got out of hand (most of the time - a load of MBV and
Stereolab, a few glimpses of Circle, 22 Pistepirkko, The Bear Quartet
and Fireside even - and one could be sure one got to see the latest
Charlatans on the show whenever it was - made it all worthwile). I'm
not sure if it was the Marilyn Manson special which they ran twice,
or what, but I really never bothered to stay up late to watch the
show after that. Taped it and fast-forwarded through the whole thing
mostly.

Oh yeah, forgot about Panasonic and Jimi Tenor. Surprised me when they
showed those videos really. And that can only be a good sign, right? ;-)

hmm, i personally don't know about that. toby and the rest of the people
behind the alternative nation did some really great things, interviewing
urusei yatsura, girls against boys and shellac as well as letting jon
spencer and man or astroman? play live in the studio. why they kept on
paying attention to the manic street preachers is beyond me, but then
again, nobody's perfect..

well, this past tuesday they played as much polvo there is left to play,
since they broke up after finishing the almost unbearably disappointing
"shapes", in the form of helium (where ash bowie plays bass guitar).

and, btw, i totally agree with me micke when it comes to what to discuss
here. for once, there was a real chance of actual brain use while ex-
changing views and opinions on a topic very much concerning scandinavian
indie bands, in opposition to the usual "oh, help, band x and band y are
playing on the same night but at different venues, what to choose, what to
choose?!"

Hmm, last I talked to Lasse he said everything was okay. I believe they
had recorded their second album (to be released on Warner) and had a few
more songs they wanted to release as well, so they asked Warner if it was
okay to release them on their own label (Grandpop) and they said they had
nothing against it.
So it seems like everything is okay between them and Warner, though that
was last week, and things move quickly in the music business (sometimes)
so who knows? I'll see what I can find...

Ah, I am not surprised. I suspect most of you know Fredrik worked together
with Pedro Almodovar (sp?) a few years back, and he planned to go to
Portugal to continue to work with film. I wonder who Mans is, and who's
in the band, and what the band is called, and if they are signed, and
and and... Anyone? Though it does seem as if their plan to move to New
York to work and play there because Sweden was full of crap didn't work
out. Sad to hear about the break-up though. I really liked 'em.

Aha - that's what I figured they would do. Though Toby did say that they
were looking for a new host _immediately_ in the last show he hosted,
but I guess it takes time to find a good one. Hmm, I wonder what the
best of 1997 show will look like...

Hehe I'm stupid. Tried to send these dates to the list a few days ago, but
it failed. So last night I thought that I could send them again. Didn't
think about the expired dates in there. No I didn't see the gigs, but I've
seen both bands before. Postgirobygget is maybe the most popular band in
Norway right now. They used to be semi-ok, but they suck now.

You know I haven't heard any of these bands - if you have the time, could
you perhaps describe what kind of music they play? Are they all from the
Oslo area?
