I wouldn't bother, they will just find new reporters somewhere. I shouldn't
pay too much attention on someone (Mans Ivarsson) who, when trying to
explain why he did not like the gig, spends half the review telling the
reader how ugly he thinks Nick Cave is. I wonder if he even was there? And
when it comes to the smaller, indie bands, I guess they did not bother to
give them any attention at all, as usual.

So he hasn't change much since 94 when he wrote about Iggy Pop's
tour premier in Gothenburg and he only gave it ++ but the only thing he
complained about was that Iggy made it all wrong since he should have played
songs from the latest album first and the old Stooges songs at the end of the
show. Instead of playing them first as he did... and what is that to even
mention? But if I got Mans killed im sure it's impossible to find anyone
who's worse than him... ;o)

All of them, of course! :)
But if you have to choose, I'd say that Tindersticks
"B&W-picture-with-grave-looking-dude cover" is their best (maybe their
latest - Curtains, haven't heard much of it yet.) You don't HAVE to buy
their Nenette et Boni-soundtrack album. It's mostly intrumental versions
of their older songs. Some of their singles has some great songs as well
on them. They also have released a live-album which is great, but not
indispensible.
In conclusion, the Top-3-Must-Have-Tindersticks-Albums are, IMHO:
1. Tindersticks 2 (B&W picture of singer (?))
2. Curtains (their latest)
3. Tindersticks 1 (red and black picture of ballet-dancer)
RHPs (who, as Tindersticks, seldom names their albums) best one is
probably "the rollercoaster-cover-picture album" which has the wonderful
Kathy's Song on it.
I don't think any of the groups have made anything NOT worth buying,
though.

I am just trying to fill in the blanks on the list with bands that played
at the Hultsfred festival. Perhaps you could help me with this. When
Eggstone moved to the big stage (because Supergrass cancelled) another band
played on the Pampas Stage (where Eggstone should have played). Anyone who
knows the name of this band? I just passed by and I can't say I liked what
I heard. It was a swedish band and it sounded like some kind of symphonic
rock. I was in too much of a hurry to stop and ask someone. Thanx in
advance.

I received the latvian CD in the mail today. I will keep it for a couple of
days and then send it to Johan Helmstad in Gothenburg on thursday or,
possibly, friday. If anyone wants to be added to the list or if someone
already added wants to make any changes: mail me as quick as possible.
Btw, am I the only one who reports to the list when I receive these tapes
and CD:s? People might have joined the mailing list after the compilations
have been completed and sent away and it will be much easier, I believe,
for these people to join the chains if they know who is in possession of
the tapes/CD:s at the moment. I sent away the Oxford tape several weeks ago
and haven't heard anything about it since then. I know (at least) one
person who wanted to be added to that chain but contacted me a bit too late.

My inside sources (PLP guitarist Rickard Sporrong) tells me that the
problem was some silly safety switch that was turned too low. That's why
the volume was ridiculously low and whiny. And apparently, the sound on
stage was much the same, which didn't help.

The Cardigans tribute is out on Tribute Records - a rather suspicious
new label which only will be releasing tribute style records (their
other releases include an Oasis tribute - whats next?!! a Backstreet
Boys comp (hmm might be a good idea actually)).
I haven't heard the actual Cardigans comp yet but the Red Sleeping
Beauty track is an acoustic ditty which i can't recall the name of to
save my life. It was pretty good though it wasn't even close to their
latest material.
So forget the Cardigans tribute - it's a stupid idea and it's not
worth your while.

Subject: Reviews of Latvian Indie CD
1. ZIG ZAG Va'vere Eva
2. ZIG ZAG Closed Doors
ZIG ZAG are latvian indie scene classics who began in mid-eighties with
THE STRANGLERS inspired "basement electro-punk" played on home-made
synthesizers. They SHOULD own copyright for the name now used in MTV's
puppet show, because they were no doubt first, but due to the situation
in then-soviet Latvia... ZIG ZAG are famous for their bedlam live
performance. "Vavere Eva" (Squirrel Called Eva) is opening title from
their latest album "Citrons zog" (lemon is stealing) and is blasting with
energy and "I don't care" attitude so typical to them. "Closed Doors" is
ZIG ZAG's interpretation of a love song genre.
3. SHINE ON Grey Head
Self fulfilling in music and quiet in public, doing what noisy home breed
shoe-gazers should, part Latvian, part Russian -- SHINE ON are they,
sometimes called the best indie band in Latvia, but few (even between
fans of latvian indie) recognize them.
4. BALOZ'U PILNI PAGALMI Melnais me'telis
5. BALOZ'U PILNI PAGALMI Mans lielais raksta'mgalds
BALOZU PILNI PAGALMI (Yards Full of Pigeons) are yet another
representatives of de-facto separatists of latvian indie -- label "Tornis
Rec." BPP are talented enough make a pop career in Latvia, but laziness
to be famous or underground philosophy (or something) has kept them away
from polishing pop style / indie skill and making best selling product.
"Melnais Metelis" (black coat) is BPP's current hit, but year old "Mans
lielais rakstamgalds" (my big writing desk) is romantic song about
relationship between boy and girl -- but not the love!
Believe or not I have luck to became a manager of this band. Maybe I'll
make this band big and maybe I'll have so much power to threw away their
laziness. WANNA MORE FROM THIS BAND CONTACT ME!!!
6. PIENVEDE'JA PIEDZI'VOJUMI Cilve'ks ar trepe'm
7. PIENVEDE'JA PIEDZI'VOJUMI Pavasars
Phenomenon -- group which IS NOT from capital Riga! Indie poppers "The
Adventures of the Milkman" came from little town Sabile and in a eye
blink flew right to the elite of Latvian rock music. Good song writers
and good performers as well, these three guys did show musical growth in
their second, current album "Maza meza zivs" (Little forestfish).
"Cilveks ar trepem" (a man with a ladder) was PP's first probe single two
years ago while recent hit "Pavasars" (The Spring) shines with experience.
8. SARKANAIS OKTOBRIS Tu tac'u zini
"Tu tacu zini" (I know you know) by SARKANAIS OKTOBRIS (red october) is
stinky shit included here to show the whole spectrum of Latvian indie.
9. PARKS Nice Day On Ice
This group of Peteris Puritis --- dewd who helped me to make this
compilation. Group existed from 1988 till 1994, never released an album, and
"Nice Day On Ice" is one of our last studio recordings. PARKS (park) has
blended so many styles in it's music, every song is something different, many
of them outside the usual definitions. Written by Peteris, "Nice Day On Ice" is
the one most near to thing called "indie pop" (that's why it was chosen) and
one of the few where Peteris is singing himself. La la la
10. JAUNS ME'NESS Horizonts
11. JAUNS ME'NESS If You Gonna Be A Hero
Five fans of U2 (quite professional fans in fact -- experienced musicians
with famous DJ as singer) decided to make some records in mid-eighties
and through years became the leading guitar driven pop group in Latvia.
"Horizonts" (horizon) is first and most successful single from their
latest album "Sirdspukstu intervals" (interval of heartbeats), "If You
Gonna Be A Hero" is recent rework of JAUNS MENESS classic.
12. PRA'TA VE'TRA My Bosom Is Your Sweet Home
13. PRA'TA VE'TRA Veronika
PRATA VETRA (brain storm) from town Jelgava is also among charts toppers
in Latvia. Previously releasing records on their own label, now they rely
in distribution on biggest Latvian label "MicRec". "My Bosom Is Your
Sweet Home" was number 1 in Latvia for months in beginning of 1997, and
soon will be followed by new album. "Veronika" is a title track from
their previous album and shows PRATA VETRA from naughty side.
14. YAPUTHMA SOUND SYSTEM You've Got The Style
Latvian Russians with gorgeous cosmic concept and remarkable videos,
previously called "Gosha i novije ezhi" (Gosha and the brand new
hedgehogs) with single from debut album "Riga Disco".
15. LUCIUS Untouchable Things
Million miles away from any kind of rock and pop -- acoustic
Latvian/Russian group LUCIUS mixes Spanish, Celtic and Baltic folk motifs
with Renaissance attitude and casual sharp guitar chord sequences to make
crazy and pleasant free form cocktail, just as crazy as nineties
themselves and therefore up to date. In my opinion, singer is among the
best female ones in Latvia.
16. SLAVA & ROLS'TEINS Strauju'dens
Singer/guitarist/keyboardist Viesturs Slava, one of members of the best,
first, and most original Latvian underground group DZELTENIE PASTNIEKI
(the yellow postmen) together with philosopher/poet/keyboardist Kaspars
Rolsteins made an album where despite of inevitable changes after all
these years tradition of DZELTENIE PASTNIEKI (1979 - 1987) still can be
heard. "Straujudens" (rapids) in addition to melody has nice surrealistic
lyrics too. As usual.
17. BE'RNI Ja' ja' ja'
Same brand as PRATA VETRA, JAUNS MENESS and PIENVEDEJA PIEDZIVOJUMI,
BERNI (children) have released only one single by now, and here it is,
called (you understand it anyway, don't you?) "Yes yes yes". Though
promising project, they'll encounter big competition from well
established groups.
18. HOW MUCH PERSONALITIES? Cananaya
They are all about their music. They look and act exactly like you could
imagine them to do. Debut album is just around the corner.
19. SKUMJU AKMEN'I We Have No Laugh
Owner of lowest female voice in Latvia (maybe in whole Europe or world?)
Helena Kozlova and her friends are playing kind of expressive gothic rock
but (who knows why?) deny it. No alternative style definitions offered.
They're gonna change their (whatever it is) style to more soft sounding
one now, maybe disappointed that there appeared no listeners' request for
gothic rock (or whatever it is) in Latvia during two years of groups
existence.
20. THE SATELLITES Nekad nekad
Britpop in Latvia? Geographic nonsense? No -- since this "return to
seventies" movement has gathered hordes of fans and followers all around
the globe, not only in Latvia. "Nekad nekad" (never never) is
surprisingly strong track for first radio demo, so it helps to confirm
reputation of comparatively new label Annemarie Records and makes us
eagerly waiting for more.

as some of you may remember, our band Cessna played a handful of tunes
at the opening night of the greatest Scandinavian pop club
International Pop Underground in Stockholm four weeks ago. It just
happened that we had a camera with us on that joyful trip and now the

Subject: A small report from Roskilde
I'm just back from the Roskilde festival. It was, well... WET! :/
Anyway, bob hund was totally amazing. That was probably the best concert I
have ever seen! Both Suede and Radiohead were pretty damn good too. As for
other Scandinavian bands, Apocalyptica was good and Soundtrack of Our
Lives was quite ok. There were no real disappointments, except for the
weather and that Live only played for about 55 minutes.
That was a small review - gotta go to bed now! :)

Subject: Going To Sweden: Suggestions or Requests?
Hi there...
As some of you may remember, I posted a little rand about a month
back about the fact that I'm heading home to the motherland for my annual
pilgrimage to Sweden (and most notably its record stores). Again, I'm just
wondering in passing if anyone has any suggestions for "must see" shows
going on in the stockholm or Uppsala areas between the 1st and 9th of July
or have any sugestions for "must get" cd's while I'm there. I'm defintelly
planning on loading up on some ska, punk and indie stuff (I hear liberator
and randy are good, respectively) and from the sound samples files I've
downloaded of Aquadays, they sound like a band I should definitelly look
for stuff by. Other than that I'm just going to see where my whims take
me, hopefully guided by the discussions here. I also got the impression
that Fidget was a band I should look into, true?
So okay, here's the summation:
a) Anyone have suggestions for CD's or shows to look into?
b) Any scandinavians in exile like myself or scan-indie interested
Americans need anything picked up for 'em while I'm there?

Liberators "Carefully blended" ep is quite OK. If there were any justice in
this world "Girls I've had" would become the hit of the summer, instead of
some new "Coco Jambo" crap. But I still think ska music is _live music_
rather than music to play on the stereo. After their Herrgarn gig condense
water were running down the walls and during the gig the vocalist had to
sit down because he was close to fainting from the heat. I haven't heard
very much by Randy, so I don't know.
When it comes to Aquadays I am not sure whether they have recorded any
records on their own. I don't think so, they were interviewed in radio
program Musikjournalen Pop's demo-magazine not too long ago. I know they
are one of the bands on Dorian Records compilation CD "A chance to shine",
though. Perhaps they are on other compilations too?

After just hearing the singles, I would say it is true!

I don't know if 1997 is a boring year for swedish music but so far I can
only come up with two records I couldn't live without: Eggstone "Vive la
difference" and Starmarket "Sunday's worst enemy". If you are interested in
upcoming swedish indie pop bands it might be a good idea to look for
Dorian's compilations "A chance to shine" and "True to you" and Harry Lime
Records "A twist of lime". Haven't heard the Emmaboda festival compilation
but that might be another one to look for.

can't think of any other festival but the absolutely fabulous Lasnarock...
but then, this theory is based only on the fact that it is the only
indie-fest that i know of.

Sorry, I didn't see any of them. I was going to see Pavement's concert,
but it was late (01:30 AM) and I was too wet and too tired (too sober
perhaps ;).

Too bad, you missed a great show. I was a bit disappointed by 'Brighten
the corners', but they're still great live. And fortunately I wasn't
sober, so I went right upfront and jumped around wildly. Stereolab is a
bit introvert and inaccessible as a festival band, probably better in a
club, but I enjoyed the set anyway. A bit of quiet floating after all the
noise.
A few other short reviews: Hellacopters were one of the bands I really
looked forward to, and they were good, hammering on like there was no
tomorrow, but they played against the odds. It just doesn't feel right to
listen to bulldozer-rock at one o'clock in the afternoon. Should have
played at midnight instead...
Bob hund was amazing. The tent was boiling, everybody seemed to know
all the lyrics, and it was impossible to stop smiling. Awesome.
Gus gus was ok, but my expectations were enormous (I love the album), so
in that light it was a bit disappointing. My mind just seemed to wander
off at times...
New Bomb Turks was everything I'd hoped for, simple, energetic and totally
amazing garage/punk rock. They can only play at one speed, 1000 km/h
straight ahead, but they do it better than anyone in the world.
Other good shows: Hoover, Sneaker Pimps, Beck
Disappointments: Smashing Pumpkins, being too drink and tired to see
Prodigy and Wu Tang Clan was cancelled.

i think it was the 5th or 6th time i saw hellacopters live, but it was
probably the least good hellacopters gig ive seen this far. i dont know if
their too tired after playing so much, or if its just me that dont think
their music last for as long as i thought first (it should do since i grow
up with stooges, heartbreakers, ny dolls and 77 punk). ok it was a very
good gig, but somethings missing. i was standing on the stage during the
gig and got a good view over the crowd and there wasnt too many in the
crowd that was jumping like hell... not as many as it use to be when they
play.

they were amazing... first time ive ever heard them was at
hultsfredsfestival this year (why on earth have i missed them???) and this
gig at roskilde was even more enjoying and wilder... and the hellacopters
joined for one song, with nicke on the drums.

couldnt agree on smashing being an disapointment... ok they didnt say to
much between their songs, but the songs in their self was so very good live
(too) that it was great in my opinion.
radiohead didnt make me happy at all... just too depressing music for me,
to be enjoyed live on stage.
other bands i dont think anyone here mentioned was...
kula shaker that made an very good gig at the green stage on the thursday.
they really got the crowd in their hands. i havent heard much kula shaker
before that gig but liked it a lot anyhow.
it was the 3 rd time ive seen suede. they didnt make an better gig than
they did in 95 in roskilde, but far much better than in waterfestival,
stockholm last year. i never manage to see the whole gig due to the heavy
rain, but even thought i didnt enjoyed the rain suede made me happy.
nick cave made the best perfomance in my opinion at roskilde 97. much
better than in hultsfred. it seems like he liked it better too, since he
played 15-20 mins longer than in hultsfred. but on the other hand, the
sound in the green tent is amazing, so its easier to do an good gig there i
guess than at an open air stage in hultsfred.
k's choice was another band (i only watched the 2nd half of it) that got
the crowd complete with them for every song... the carisma of the singer
was amazing, and her happiness really looked real and made the crowd wilder
and more screaming that i thought they would do.
i dont know if anyone noticed that ebbot of soundtrack of our lives was
pretty drunk. i was there when they started the soundcheck (of our lives
;o) ) and then it was quite easy to notice. i didnt noticed it that well
during the gig it self, i mean it got better than it did at hultsfred were
he forgot the lyrics quite often. the best soundtrack... gig ive seen. i
was in the mixingdesk tower during the gig and how very much they seem to
made ebbot look like jesus... when they turn on loads of white light most
of the other guys in the band disapears, and ebbot raises his hands just
like he was to heal the crowd... it made me laugh a bit... i have know idea
if theyve done this on purpose or not.
was it anyone that was at the gigs of republica, ian dury, supergrass or
leningrad cowboys on the sunday? did they good gigs?
j.nilsson - that shouldnt complain so much about the weather, since someone
nice gave him backstagepass and and hotelroom...

IMHO it wasn't great, but still very good. Some songs sounded rather
strange though. "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" for instance was very
strange.

passion, so much great music.

Really? I thought it was rather dull. I like their CD, but the concert was
rather disappointing I think. Didn't see all of it though.

It was the third time for me as well. I was at the front all the time,
which was like a war I can tell you. I agree that their gig in 95 was
better, but this one was great as well. The encore ("The Chemistry Between
Us" and "Filmstar") was a nice surprise.

I was at the Supergrass gig and liked it a lot. I also saw the first three
or four songs of Leningrad Cowboys's (including The Red Army Choir) set.
Would have seen the rest too, but we had to leave.
I would also like to hear about Republica! I was going to see the gig, but
somehow the time wasn't enough.

I could agree on that they made a few rather strange versions of a few
songs like bullet... someone told me that they made far better gigs during
the mellon collie tour, but since i missed that tour couldnt i compare.

Not the biggest one by any chance, but that music seems to be easier for me

I think that it could have something to do on wich stage they are playing
too. the green one at roskilde is so much better so you think that the gig
in it self actually are better too. too bad i didnt stand the rain long
enough to se the encores :o/

Well anyway, if you're going to the baltics this summer, i can tell you
it rocks over there.
I was at a beach festival in Nida (Lithuania) nad the artists were
pretty sad (Baltic equivalents of Lena Philipson, Boppers and Jerry
Williams doing sing back) <ggh!>, but the party afterwards was HUGE! I
haven't danced that much since prodigy at Lollipop last year.

It's so simple.
1. a mailing list usually has two addresses.
a) an address you use to post to all the list members
b) an administrative address, for requests
for example: a) "scan-indie@lysator.liu.se"

Do you see how that works? Let's take another example:
a) "joe-fanclub@nothing.here.com"
b) "joe-fanclub-request@nothing.here.com"
2. An administrative request is (for example) the following:

d) unsubscribe
e) help

Yes, that's right. When you want to subscribe to a mailing
list, you use the administrative address, just like you did
when you subscribed to this list. Here's that example:

As far as I can see the only way to get a copy of the said compilation tape
is to contact Nicke Bostrom, the editor of the great zine EttNollEtt, and
ask him to dub it for you, as he is the only person known to own this
compilation which was released in a limited edition of one single copy...
Seriously speaking, "East of Sweden" is not a 'real' compilation in the
sense that you cannot buy or get it anywhere, it was just a tape I made for
Nicke as a thank you for the issue of EttNollEtt he kindly sent me. It was
kind of fun to see it reviewed by him in EttNollEtt though (they even used
a picture of the sleeve).
I guess I should finally make a replacement for the ill-fated Finnish CD
that was supposed to be sent around as a chain, especially as I have gotten
some excellent new recordings lately from here and there (including a brand
new demo by Mess, the band that I thought had broken up already a while ago).
