Subject: smalands thursday
There's a "cultural week" going on at Smalands nation in Lund this week.
Tomorrow evening, Thursday 15/5, NEUHAUSER gets on stage at 22 pm. They
sound a bit Gong-ish and Kraut-ish. Improvisations, moogs and space
sounds.
After that at 23 pm, BENT SPANNER, ARTY BANNER gets on stage.
Hard, weird Pop/rock?
To finish the evening Micke Fant, member of the band Crescent Venus,
starts of the Krautrock (don't we hate that word) disco. Loads of Neu,
Can, La Dusseldorf, Faust and the other great germans. Mixed with some
newer sounds like Stereolab and Tortoise. And don't forget the forgotten
Trio.

other people have become fed up with us swedes by now. I hope not, I joined
this list to get information about music in the whole of Scandinavia, I can
get info about swedish music just as easy elsewhere. Never mind if your
english isn't perfect, this is a good opportunity to get some training in
this language.

Well, in my case, I'm an American who has only been getting into Swedish pop
for the last 18 months or so--I started with the Wannadies, discovered the
Cardigans when the US edition of LIFE came out in early 1996, then
discovered Eggstone's SOMERSAULT (one of my current favorite albums) and
Komeda. (Speaking of Komeda, am I the only one who much prefers POP PA
SVENSKA and PLAN 714 TILL KOMEDA to THE GENIUS OF KOMEDA?) So the reason I
don't post is that I'm afraid I don't know very much yet even about Swedish
pop, and I know nothing at all about pop from Norway, Finland, or any other
Scandinavian countries. And I don't want to sound stupid, so I don't say
anything. Maybe some of the other non-Scandinavians on the list feel the
same way.

Hey,
just thought that I'd drop a couple of lines to promote
a compilation cassette called "2.95 dollar sounds" put
out by Scary Cassettes. It contains 18 indie/alternative/
lo-fi/rock/pop/whatever songs by 18 more or less unsigned
Swedish bands like In A Spring, Ogden Flood, Phlegm,
Kevlar, Poyken and Picabo to name a few.
Okay, so Lousy have a song on it but actually I couldn't
care less about our contribution since we've gone through
some major line-up changes since that song was recorded.
Well, it's a good song, could've been performed a lot
better though. So that's not why you should get the tape.
Get it because it contains some really, really good music!
You'll probably be as surprised as I was about the high
quality of a lot of the bands on it.

Stewart,you are certainly not the only non-Scandinavian to prefer Pop Pa
Svenska to The Genius of cd. Me thinks the former is absolutely gggreat!
Just need to brush up on the Swedish language and all will be candy. As
far as the lack of contribution thing goes. Don't feel bad because I am
on a similar boat. I am sure that if the topic was Pearl Jam or some
other awful grunge band, we(Americans) would have much to contribute. I
say that with much regret. Also because American popular music is
seemingly backwards in progression, we also have very limited access to
the wonderful music that our Scandinavian friends have to offer. In the
meantime, we shall sit like sponges and absorb.

Since when was Pearl Jam ever grunge?? They do reside in Seattle, but
sorry, they aren't grunge. Mudhoney, old Nirvana, Tad, etc.....THAT'S
grunge! What you hear on American radio now ain't grunge either -- it's
recycled, third-hand faux grunge (Silverchair, Bush, Seven Mary Three, et
al). I happen to like a lot of what came out on the SubPop label in the
mid-to-late 80's, but the commercial crap that's out there now isn't the
same thing at all. It's sort of what the Monkeys were to the Beatles:
pale, bland imitations.

Oh, please do. My primary reason for subscribing to this list was to hear
more about finnish music. I don't even _like_ swedish pop, which makes
listening in here a tad boring at the moment.
Saw Isebel's Pain this weekend at an extremely cool venue in Berlin. They
were their usual, hard-rocking self, and with me being generally happy and
drunk on weissbier I had a great time (even though people from Berlin try
so hard to be cool that they forget to enjoy the music).
Next monday at 1000fryd Sweetheart from Finland is playing (support from
Karkiautomatii - anybody know them?). Saw them a couple of years ago, and
they blew me away! The press material compares them with VU and Captain
Beefheart, but I dunno. More like Big Black in my book, but better!
Anyway, "Well-dressed meat" and "An ordinary family.." are indispensable
albums.

Bands on SubPop I like Very much: Beat Happening, Combustible Edison, Eric's
Trip, Grifters, Red Red Meat, Supersuckers, Velocity Girl.
Commercial crap? I have hard to understand your point. In my opinion SubPop
is still one of the best labels in the US, altough they have changed quite
much during the last years. OK they have a major connection nowadays, and I
think that's rather sad, but if you but that aside SubPop is one of the
forerunners on the US growing pop scene.

whoaaa, wait a minute, the Monkeys were an awsome band, as were most
of the so called sixties copycats, the Beatles might have lead the
pack but some of the greatest songs ever written were put out by
lesser known bands. (And bands as big as the Monkeys)
Putting it frankly, the Beatles might have revolutionised popmusic as
we know it but i'd still go for any Beach Boys/ Jan and Dean /
Fantastic Baggies /Hollies / Byrds / Monkeys et al song any day. And
i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the Beatles (as the
Oasis of their day) were just too big to for their owb good. There's
simply no way to discover them, they're everpresent, they overwhelm
and invade instead of creeping up and surprising with their greatness.
Just the same way i feel about INDIE-pop! There's no thrill in Oasis
or Blur or Suede or MAnsun or ----insert name here---- but stumbling
upon the frantic arpeggios of the Teen Anthems (a Welsh keyboard based
crash-pop outfit), or the skruffy yet glimmering four track demos of
Smash Hit Wonders, or the farfisaglory of the sadly missed Madison
Electric. Or the thrill of swedish sixties outfits such as Tages,
Namelosers and the greatest band to ever come rushing out of the
souther suburbs of Stockholm-------> The Mascots, whos contribution to
the pop wall of fame must be the absolutely fabulous "Words Enough To
Tell Her". Imagine the harmonies of the Beach Boys set to the glorious
jangle of the Byrds and you're getting there.
Anyway's most of these sixties bands have been re-released and can
still be picked up today, lets hope we don't have to wait thirty years
to discover the greatness that surrounds us right now, churning out
demos and cheap 7" singles, doing shows around the corners of the
world while we're all too busy looking for that new majorlabel release
thats litterally's being showed down our throats.
oh, before i forget, any of the more mod inspired folks out there
might be interested in an awsome retro package featuring californias
finest mod outfit Powder. The comp, aptly titled "Biff! Bang! Powder!"
is out on some obscure american label but it truly glimmers in it's
early Who-ish glory.

9th of May,
Riihimaki/Bonanza
Hi Dear List!
This is the short rewiev of the Mana Mana -gig in Riihimaki at 9th of
May - as seen from behind the drumset...
The gig was held as a birthday-party for one guy from
Riihimaki(cant remember who it was, but what the heck, congr. anyways!).
The first two bands I missed (more or less), becouse I had to
get some rest and something to eat -for I had travelled through
the whole country to get to Riihimaki.
The place (Bonanza) is a quite big place, actually a motel that
is by the highway nro. 3 (from Helsinki to Tampere) and is about
5 km from the center of Riihimaki, a quite small town. So actually
we were playing in the middle of nowhere. And the motel was a major
macho-redneck-texas-mexican -style dance-hall for adults, maybe
3 or 4 hundred could fit in if wanted. Stuffed animals and cowboy-hats
hanging around - What a place! And the 'original' crowd that was there
drinking their beers - cowboyhats, worn-out jeans, moustache,
redneck...ahhh!!
Anyways, there was about 50 punk and goth and other rockers in Bonanza as
Mana Mana started with its 6 man line-up, with Otra(gtr), Tumppi(bs),
Kaltsu(voc), Antti(gtr), Jake(gtr) and Pete(me, dr). Jouni was in the
guest-list again...Sound politics was a kind of a mess, a junior behind
the mixing-table for his 2nd nite in that position - sorry, but he just
didn't make it!
Songs went quite well and only slight mistakes were noticed. Due the
circumstances only a short rehearsal was held, so it was first time
since last september that we were up and playing together. Band was not
too drunk and volume was HIGH-UP. Some critisism can be put on the
songlist, or the order of the songs played. Seemed like the audience got what they
wanted about in the middlepart of the gig and started to get more drunk
and as they stopped dancing and concentrated more on listening (hope
so...).
The feeling in the stage was quite good, only some small technical
problems seemed to bother Otra - Kaltsu stepped on his amp's remote-box and down
went the sounds... - and his broke some strings.... Thank god there is 3
guitarists in the line-up so he could concentrate on the solo-parts....
Maybe too much sitting in a hot car, but at least I felt extremely tired
after the gig and also my wrists were aching so that I hardly could hold a pen!
Jake told that I had hit the drums very heavily, so that might explain the
wrists...I had my E-A-R-plugs in, so my ears were not ringing afterwards - as some
ears in the stage or in the audience might have done.
The end
Epilogue
For some reason there was a massive advertisement campain that Mana Mana
was to be in Tampere next evening. We checked our man in Tampere, and he
told us that he hadn't sold any gig and as far as he knew, there was some
mix-up with the permissions and that the gig was not be hold. Also Mana Mana
did not recieve any contract or other form of contact, that would have
shown that we shold play there.
I tried to phone the club there, Sub Club, but even the finnish telephone
company didn't have their number. According to these facts we decided not to go out to
hang around Tampere for a gig that might be or might be cancelled (hey
it's 6 guys living in 5 places around the freaking country!!!). If fans
there in Tampere have felt dissapointed, we are truly sorry for the
inconvinience. We'll make it up next time!
Next time someone arranges a gig, _INFORM THE BANDS_!!!! Thanks.

Sorry, misunderstanding......when I wrote "crap that's out there now" I
was not referring to the current output of SubPop, I was referring to the
stuff that pretty much saturates American "alternative" radio nowadays.
Combustible Edison, Velocity Girl, etc, are cool and I don't consider them
commercial at all.

Well, we're gonna hafta disagree on that one! :-) To me, Pearl Jam are like
an updated, 90's sorta classic rock. Their main influences are stuff like
Neil Young, Bad Company, normal old rock and roll from the 70's. Mudhoney
and other true grunge bands, OTOH, were into much wilder underground
stuff like Flipper, Big Black, and pre-punk stuff like the Stooges, MC5. I
think if Pearl Jam had come from say, Bangor, Maine, or Boston,
Massachusetts, instead of Seattle, Washington, the label "grunge" would
have never been applied to them.

Hehe, hate to brake it to you, but the thing that was before this puke-like
band called Pearl Jam was called Mother Love Bone. MLB was definately not
jumping on a wave, and while it wasn't a pioneer in the essence of, say,
Mudhoney and Flipper, it was still thought of as grunge... where am i going
with this? uh, but if we can't call Pearl Jam grunge, then propably we
should seriously think about changing the bands were talking about, because
i assure you most of them have nothing to do with independent... it's all
fine what were doing here, but don't for god's sake think of it as more than
what it is. because most of us (me included) are just little trend-followers.

You do that :-). I can understand that it is hard to contribute very much
if you live "over there". When I wrote my last message I was thinking more
about our neighbours in other scandinavian countries. I have been able to
read plenty of reviews of swedish records, gigs and info about swedish
bands, events etc here recently. I just think that at least some of us
might be interested in the same kind of information from Finland, Denmark,
Iceland, Norway and the Baltic states.
I do, in fact, have a question but the rumours it is based on are so old
that the news might have spread from Denmark to other countries by now.
Anyways, I heard something about ludox recording a new album. Anyone who
knows whether it is out yet and, if it is, whether it is any good?

Oooh! Sweetheart, how do i describe them. i wrote about them in Popwatch,
and Sweetheart was the hardest to put into words. actually i compared them
to Big Black too. for anybody who still is into loud rock'n roll action,
this is thee thing... Karkkiautomaatti is a great band too, but in a really
different way. they play really good 60's bubblegum meets punk stuff. those
two bands are totally different, but they compliment each other...
Sweetheart's got a new moore mood-jazz (well atleast in the bad vugum scale)
and garage oriented album that i really like, called Intoxicated Boom Boom.
i have never in my life (well maybe the VU albums) heard a record with so
good sound. i mean, they mixed it theirselves, and it really shows.
in the same way that a lot of finns like bob hund, i think you'd like
karkkiautomaatti. altough the lyrics are great, there's so much other stuff
on there that it doesn't matter that you don't understand them... altough
i've got a feeling that half the swedes don't understand what bob hund is
singing.

Elakelaiset prooves that even a joke-band can be good. they play "humppa"
wich is a dance/rythm that old people seem to like. they take famous songs
(deep purple, 2unlimited etc.) and rearrange them into humppa. should be fun

80's, but now he's showing how easy it is to make hits and become famous by
playing the grooviest, coolest easy-listening lounge music. he's said that
in the new album "have been done all possible mistakes to make it a mega
hit" basically, he's cool as shit, because he's fucking around with
everybody who's trying to be really hip by listening to music like his.

Yeah, I've been watching Good Morning America all week....Monday morning
they were in Denmark, Tuesday in Bergen, Norway, yesterday in Stockholm
and this morning somewhere in Finland. And tomorrow they're in Reykjavik.
I have only heard one Kent song before (and it wasn't that one), so I
didn't notice it. I did hear a snippet of something from "First Band on
the Moon" (and it wasn't one of the songs getting airplay, either). I
thought that was cool. Some female singer named Robin sang at the
end....not quite my cup of tea. She's supposed to be quite big in Sweden
now - they said she went platinum. Is platinum the same there as in the
States?

I think it was a wee instrumental bit of Kent in the background when
they were trying to find good-looking Swedish guys (hey, sounds like
me with my walkman on %-). I was pretty pleased with myself for being
able to identify it...

I heard that both these bands will play at a "finnish festival" at venue
Studion in Stockholm the next weekend (23rd-24th of May). Seven bands, I
think, are supposed to play. I don't remember the names of them all but
Circle and Aavikko are two of them. I suspect that Thee Ultra Bimboos might
be one of the other bands, but I am not sure. Then there was a band called
something including 69 Eyes. Anyways, I wont be able to go there, I have
two exams here at the university during the forthcoming weeks (Yes! Some
things I consider more important than music, though there aren't a lot of
things as important as that).

Speaking of Swedish soul.....are the Creeps still around? When I was in
Stockholm back in '90, their album "Blue Tomato" was just out. I really
liked some of it. Wondering if they ever did anything after that..

Yes, they are still with us. I think so at least, they released an album
not too long ago (early last year, I think). They also recorded a video,
with one song from the album, that had quite much playtime on Z-Tv (swedish
equivalent to MTV, sort of). Since my memory is working quite well today I
don't remember the title of either the album nor the single (but I do
remember that there is a frog on the album cover). I also remember that I
thought the video was quite fun, making fun of all these TV commercials
trying to sell you eternal happiness by just taking a pill or something (on
the other hand their video to "Ooh, I like it", from "Blue tomato" was,
actually, a TV commercial for a swedish clothes retailing-chain which also
sponsored the entire album).
The music, well it was OK but they sound exactly like before. I don't own
any Creeps records and if I ever decide to buy one it won't be this new
one. "Blue tomato" is the same sound but better songs (haven't heard very
much from their earlier recordings). I believe most people thought the same
way, the sales have been far less than for "Blue tomato".

Their early stuff is really good 80s garage rock, their first album
has apparently been released on get hip record (www.gethip.com)

I received their cd, a few months back, no cover just a green record (as
the record's called "Green") Wonder how the vinyl looks?
For those who haven't heard them they are a bit "ska" ish, I think a bit
boring, not exciting ska, quite slow, maybe they're better live. In America
they are on DR Stange Records
I don't know nothing about the Airport.
Surpriced to see that Grimskunk are playing here, from Montreal Canada.
I've also got an old record from them. They play very fast, also some ska
mixed in. ok. The record is called "Exotic Blend" and they say we believe
in free smokin!!!
