not according to per sunding! yours is the natural interpretation,
obviously, but let's go with per's version, ok? it would make sara
so sad if that little bit of recognition was taken away from her...

Hmm, I broght the two first EPs from Eggstone to the studio, but i
believe nothing went on air, there was not enough time. And concerning
the rest, i must admit that i don't have much of those particular bands
on CD, just tapes. Sorry everybody ;-)

Umm, I pesuaded Roberts to tape a copy of the brilliant
synth/body-album "The Guide" with Scapa Flow (of Uppsala fame).
A far shot from indie, but nevertheless epic. If you haven't heard them
yet, check them out. Roberts, did you like it!?

After all the talk about Gothenburg rocksters Cry on the list, I feel a
need to express my feelings about them.

Yesterday they played a short gig at Harrys Playground here in
Gothenburg. It was actually at the releaseparty of Chunks, but since
they share the same label (Velodrome) Cry got to perform as well.
And IMHO didn't do it particularly well.

They play loudmouthed rock'n'roll without any kind of finesse, without
dynamics and with a singer who desperately tries to squeeze every bit
out of his very limited charisma. Sorry guys. I really like rock'n'roll
but Cry are just a rockband-by-numbers.

Subject: Coming out.

Hi. Suppose I've lurked enough on the list now, (hello BSAB-Mats). My
name is Johan Weitner and I live in Malmo, (formerly known as Boogie
Town). I'm currently neglecting my studies at the Dept of Education,
Lund University, and eagerly awaiting spring. I'm in a band called
Elevator Adam, which holds the Swedish record in "recording-demos-not-
sent-anywhere"
, I believe. Our latest will be posted however; (we
finally woke up from our official coma and accepted an invitation from
Tambourine, and the result IS satisfying for a change). We did release
an overly produced EP - Alcomoon - two years ago, but not many cared
much. Someone voted for the video on ZTV's "Toppen" though. Dunno who or
why - it stunk. But...we're happy...really...

I'm mostly into the American stuff myself, (you know; Replacements,
Husker Du, Pixies, Posies, AMC, B.Tom, and so on), but Sweden is coming
along nicely these days I think. I still do detect an unpleasant
Brit-hype-mania-over-nothing-tendency here and there though. But one
can't deny the brilliance of bands like Eggstone and Wannadies.
And now for a little treat especially for you guys :-)

Subject: the Bear Quartet show.. + other stuff

Hi,

I just thought I'd write a few things about the show that
took place 2 days ago at Sporhallen, Lule}.

At 8 Elephantine, from Kiruna, started playing. It was not
so interesting, sort of like a sloppier Fireside.

About 1 hour later it was Sun Boy's turn (who I of course have
heard before, since they played 2 songs on TV4 Norbotten)
played pretty nice jazzy pop, a bit boring at times though.
They ended with "R.O.C.K" by Sha-Boom which was more funny
than good.
They were done around 10 pm, and annoyingly enough, those
Hockey dorks "Ebba Blitz" didn't start playing before 11 pm.
("Ebba Blitz" is a band consisting of hockey players from
Lule} Hockey and 2 of their girlfriends or something, and
they play Ebba Gr|n and Th}str|m covers.. Do I need to say
anything more?)

Ok, a short while after midnight the Bear Quartet started playing,
they played the at least 7 year old song "Spoon", which funnily
enough was written by Johan Forsling (who isn't in the band
anymore, he was at the show though :). A lot of songs from
Moby Dick (His Spine, Machine Gun, Before the Trenches) and
a pretty weird version of "I never saw the ban".
They ended with a 15+ minutes long version of "If you have
a heart"
. Well however, this was the first time I saw them
playing with their new drummer and he and the rest of the band
did great.

Too bad only about 100 showed up, but i think getting people to
come to a drug free show on Valborgsm{ssoafton is pretty hard.
Kinda silly that they had rented a place with room for more than
2000 people for the whole event.

Ok, on to other things... Doesn't anyone know anything about the
7" the Bear Quartet released in Japan? I was supposed to get a
copy but I never did :/
I will update the discography pretty soon, and maybe I'll make it
look a little bit less boring.
Check out a Bear Quartet fan page at http://hem.passagen.se/b4/bq,
it looks pretty nice. Kind of funny that on the picture on the
first page is Niclas from Him Kerosene (who DID play for them
during at least one show), and I can't decide on if the guy on
the right side of Mattias is Kristian from Breach or if that
really is Urban Nordh (who is no longer in the band).

I recall that there was a female solo artist, called Sara, who released an
album some months ago. I guess this is her. I haven't heard anything from
her but according to a review I read it should be some kind of
hippie-inspired pop/rock. Not bad, according to the reviewer, but sometimes
a bit too much flower power over it. And 25 dollars would be considered
expensive even in Sweden!

Last night, saturday, Silverbullet conquered Underground here in
Gothenburg. The best gig I've been to in a long time. Full-on
rock'n'roll from the very first note.

They really have come to terms with how to look like a band on stage and
this time not only the fantastic singer Simon Ohlsson attracted roars
from the crowd. They all looked so cool. And they really sounded great.
Probably they got a bit of a confidence-boost after all the good reviews
of the album.

Catch up with them, even if you've seen them a million times before. The
best night out you can have.

Sara got a track "
Forecast of doomsday" on the Compilation "Defenders of the
oppressed breed" (VEG001) released by Nordiska Samfundet mot pl}gsamma
djurf|rs|k, Dolores etc. and distributed by MD.

A CD "

Guess there ain't too many people on this list who are interested in an
Eggstone-gig in Linkoping but for those who are - the gig this friday seems
to be cancelled. According to some tour guides and Eggstone's own record
company there should have been a gig at venue Skylten but it is cancelled
(says Vibrafon, the record company). The strange thing is that the people
at Skylten (and at Get Back, a local record store with connections to
Skylten) seemed to be totally unaware of the fact that Eggstone was about
to host them, they thought that the concert was to be held somewhere else
in Linkoping!!? Strange, isn't it?

Another note - no Music on the TV list this week, as you probably

Umm, some of the listies have already replied to this one, but I just
wanted to say that Sara has released one album and one 6-track single (so
far). The album is s/t and the single is called "
Liberation". The single
was released at the end of 1996 and the album on January 10th this
year. And as someone else said, she's on the "
Some Pearls" label
(Slask Records - slask@algonet.se).

When it comes to what she sounds like, I'm not sure what to say though.
One can of course find references to all of the above mentioned artists,
but in a much more spaced-out way than you'd probably imagine. With titles
like "
Forecast Of Doomsday", "Echoes Of Doomsday" and "Infected Obsession",
it would be enough when describing a death metal band, but when it comes
to Sara, I'd say it's enough to describe what she feels when she's singing,
or perhaps want the listener to feel.

What I do know is that I had to turn off the album after five songs,
wait a while, and then listen to a couple more. Just because I couldn't
handle all of it at once. I didn't want to go crazy. Harsh words perhaps,
but that's just me and my opinion.

Hey Ola - thanks again for posting these updates! It really helps (at
least me) out when deciding if/when one should say 'what the hell, it's

Tobbe. I have to say you're wrong.
They're NOT playing smalands nation. It's Blekingska. Not that I really
care but I think the people who arrange the concert do...

And of course, the latest number of Pop (the best Stockholm-based swedish
music-magazine in the universe), has a couple of pages about them. I
got it in my mail yesterday. It also says that Teddybears STHLM are
recording a new album, so is Sobsister. And the guitarist from Broder
Daniel nowadays plays in a band called Fiesta. Maybe something to be
looking forward to?

Actually if you take the bus (SWEBUS EXPRESS) the cost between STHM -
GBG is 190 SEK (140 SEK if you are a student). If you only go to/from
Linkoping (either way) it is of course a little cheaper. AND, you could

hi,
oops, i was dead wrong here....i should have known better!

the show was great though at blekingska with lots of people, yvonne
presented a magic set with songs from the new album, but i must say that
songs like Wires, Modern Love, Cut a smile, Protect me, Viens and Broken
parts where simply smashing and made the audiens go crazy.

in the middle of the show girls in the front where pushed down to the floor

And it's a nice page too - though you should probably try to compress some
of the images a bit more (370 k is a bit hard for us using only a modem).

I was especially impressed by the fact that the lyrics are there. How did
you do that? I mean, it's not like it's real easy to hear what is sung,
especially not on the earlier albums. (Some of you might remember a brief
discussion about TBQ lyrics about a year ago, where I used Elvis Beach as
an example. "
Mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, on Elvis Beach...")

Keep up the good work!

Patrik Nyborg wondered about Robot/Surreal:

Went to Starboy's showcase in Stockholm. Surreal's opening song sounded
great, then it all fell remarkably - but there is a potential there.
I also wish they would show that they were a bit more alive on the stage!

Robot - A jokingly 80's synth-pop-kitch band in the spirit of Superswirls.
More fun than good.

And finally, a band called Freinds. Superb power-rock a la Jon Spencer
and MC5. Extremely good. A band that's really alive!

Last Saturday I was at the Bear Quartet's gig at Studion. It was the
first time I've seen them live and I was not dissapointed. They rocked!
The songs were a lot rockier than on the albums and it worked great.
Except for "
who's knocking", which I think they destroyed with some
new drumcomp.

They played mostly new songs. One or two from each old album except
"
cosy den" and the rest from "moby dick" or the "before the trenches"
single. The set finished with the 15-minute version of "
if you have a
heart". Amazing! Jari must be Sweden's best rock guitar player. New
drummer Jejo Perkovic was great too.

I don't know if this is true, but it seemed to me as if Mattias
Alkberg hid behind faces and silly gestures in the beginning. But he
soon relaxed and started dedicating songs to various people; his
daughter, old friends, new friends and other bands in the audience.
There were rather many people there but it wasn't crowded. (Studion
can take around 350 people, I think).

I'm really looking forward to seeing them again on June 1st (They're
playing at bottleneck for only 30 crownes :-)

Haven't heard anything about arvika, but SoM are doing several other
gigs this summer, so it might be a chance. I know three festival gigs
in Germany at the end of may + three gigs in England in June. If arvika
doesn't come off, I might go to Manchester 11/6 instead.

Hey there,

Being the little ol' swede-in-exile in New York that I am, I'm
psyched as hell that I'm going back to Sweden this summer for a bit. Thing
is though, my trips to Sweden tend to degenerate into mad record shopping
sprees for great swedish music I can't get over here, but usually just
stuff I buy on impulse without having heard much about.
So, enough introduction, basically why I'm writing is to ask if
anyone has any major recomendations of good swedish pop or punk to pick up
while I'm there (or anything they might need me to pick up for them) AND if
there's any particularly good shows going on in the stockholm or uppsala
areas... I realize there's a gig list posted to this list every once in a
while, but I'm not sure who most of the bands are, so it doesn't do me that
much good...

So thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have. If you want to
e-mail me in person (mqo4365@is4.nyu.edu) rather than cluttering up the
list with it, that's cool too!

Martin

Well, I'd love to recommend a bunch of records - but when it comes
to concerts/gigs in July - I'd say it's a bit early yet. My top
(now-ish) three genre Swedish record recommendations would be:

Hard:

Play Dough (on Dolors Records) - anything you can find with them.
As far as I know they have only released an album (CD),
but what a devastatingly good album it is! Kind of like
Salt but harder and w/male-female vocals. Not one bad
song on the whole album. A pity the band split up
after this was released...

Medium:

Salt (on MVG Records) - well, they release their last album ever
today (May 13th), which contains 6 previously unreleased
songs + a bunch of b-sides. Even though I haven't heard it
yet, I know it's a classic.

Light:

Honeymoons (on NONS Records) - actually, pretty much everything with
this band is highly recommended if you like the early 90's
Manchester / UK pop scene. They just released their new
album, which apart from the gorgeous cover/sleeve, delivers
the kind of pop I want pop to be like.

Of course bands like Yvonne, Bob Hund, Soundtrack Of Our Lives,
Eggstone, The Bear Quartet, etc. etc. are always recommended.

I think I'll leave it up to other list members to continue to
recommend records now..

Hmm, they interviewed Sobsister on Musikjournalen Pop on Swedish national
radio yesterday, and they didn't say anything about an album being recorded.
They did say that they were going to release a 7"
single called "Hey Mike"
(w/Promenade as the second track) (on Freak Scene) late May, and that they
have recorded a new demo in the Tambourine studio, but that was about it
(as far as I heard).

It isn't surprising to hear that Pop wrote something that isn't true, as
they have done so on several occasions (Yvonne, The Charlatans etc.) but
I'd rather know the truth before I add this one to the list.

That is to say - does anyone know if they are recording an album, and
if so, on what label will it be released?

You're right - I have a couple of those coupons here somewhere. So it'll
only be 140 SEK there and back, STHLM-GBG, right? So LNKPG-GBG-LNKPG should
be a lot cheaper, as it is 200 kilometers closer to GBG than STHLM is...

I can tell you this. The last time I spoke to Simon (the singer) he said
that they were asked about the Beavis & Butthead thing, though he didn't
know if the band was going. Perhaps they didn't think it was the right
thing to do? That is as far as I know about this.

Sorry, my mistake. It was just songs for a demo. They were recording it
"
for a major record company who wants to take the puls on Sobsister".
The songs all start with a 'w', like "
Weeo", "Wicked Hi", "Wishes for

Tambourine Studios.

well, testpressings are always sort of rare though i wouldn't pay more
for it than a regular album. but speaking of the album, i might be
hard to find but since it was released on WEA and, unfortunatly, only
sold about 500 copies there should be alot of Oven & Stove albums out
there somewhere.

"
pre-Bob Hund pranksters" - don't let this fool any of you. Oven &
Stove were one of the finest bands Sweden has ever produced. They were
dead on Devo, including the jerky rythms, bizarre lyrics, wonderful
analogue buzzing and some of the coolest clothes ever worn on swedish
stages. and their live shows put Bob Hund to shame (well, almost).
I've seen Mats Wigerdahl pass out on stage from bouncing up and down
on stage, at Stockholms Cityhallen, severely bruising his head from
hitting the roof too many times. and alot of the moves Thomas Oeberg
has practiced into perfection during the many Bob Hund shows first
appeared at the Oven & Stove shows.

and the songs are all classic hits - "
potatoman", "wrong lola",
"
amalgam sam"... the list could almost go on forever.

and the video for "
wrong lola" even had cia berg (now famous whale
frontperson) in a car running down famous swedish popstars.

oohh, the days were merrier then, they even smashed and set one of
their synthezeisers on fire at their Hultsfred show to close the gap
between the guitardominated rockfestival crowd and their own brand of
sci-fi bopping new wave....

get the album while you still can!
