Heh heh, yeah. The first version (the one with the "guy on the couch") is
the original one. Apparently the band's US label didn't think it was good
enough for the US (I think it was because of the "naked" ladies...), so they
had to make another one (the one with the boat etc.) I remember someone on
the list who was working on the set or something like that when the band
recorded the second one? Anyway, he said something about the band not being
very happy about making it (you can always look it up in the digest archive
if you're interested) or something.

Anyway, they show both videos over here (or used to at least).

3. Teddybear Baby (re-run mix) (2.59)

Scandinavian Indie review: The second single from Fidget presents another
song from the demo that got them signed, 'Stop Losing', and it actually is
the demo version of the song. They were not happy about the studio-version
and decided to use this one instead, which makes me happy because I liked
it then and I like it now.

'Hey Little Sister' is the much talked about duet between Nina Natri and
Jay-Jay Johansson, and from which the title of their album "No Boogie Coming
Your Way" comes (listen to the lyrics). If someone expected that this duet
would sound fantastic, well, then you were right! Deep and dark-voiced
Jay-Jay (what a voice he has got!) together with light, breathe-voiced
Nina is a beautiful match. And it also gives you an idea how Fidget would
sound with a male singer.

The re-run mix of 'Teddybear Baby' is nothing special. They have beefed
up the sound which means that the vocals, piano and the trombone are
a lot clearer than before, that is all.

But, as 'Hey Little Sister', which is something you don't want to miss,
does not appear anywhere else, the single is definitely worth buying.

Scandinavian Indie Review: So, after all the talk about this band, here, in
magazines, on the TV and the radio, the question is: Is their debut album
any good? The answer to that is plainly: Yes, it certainly is.

Even though I'm not completely happy with it, (for example, 'Semi-naked' is
still tough, charming and alarming but it isn't what it used to be, and they
didn't include the wonderful guitar-walls they do when playing live, which
is something of the best I have ever heard in my entire life. That is to
say that when I know they are able to do something like that, why not use
it!?), it's got the amazing 'My Prawns' which actually is enough for
me because it's just a marvel in itself.

I won't go into all of the songs on the album, but here are some thoughts
on at least some of them:

'Pokerface' is first a weird thing with a banjo and a blip-blop synth and
then lovely electric guitar choruses and end where they use a hollow sound
on the synth with a perfect fit. When I hear those pieces with the addictive
drums and the gorgeous guitars together with Nina Natri singing
'Poker-fheee-hyeyce' and the way they move out of the chorus at the end,
I can only congratulate. It's brilliant!

'Singoalla' on the album is actually a new title for the demo song
'Hoovering Away', though it is the studio version with a lot more synthesizer
sound and Nina's voice not as happy-go-lucky sounding, and thus not as
"naive" and genuine as the demo version. I still love the way the bass moves
in, adding thunder to the picture. Letting you know they are on the way to a
harder section. And it is also still one of the best songs on the album.

'Teddy' is the studio version of the demo song with the same name. Here they
have added background strings (!) which I wish they hadn't because it is a
very beautiful song in itself, without them. Slow and sad with a jangly
guitar, a moody synth and a piano. On their demo, this was one of my
favourites, and it would have been here on the album as well if they had
not used those strings. It feels as if they are out of place here and not
needed.

'Fast Forward' is really really good - disted electric guitars mixed with a
bit of Superswirls sounding synths and (you know the Commodore 64 game
"Rambo" - when it loaded, the intro song that played then? Ie. the same as
in the movie, but with the C-64 sound. They are using the exact same sound
here!) early Depeche Mode synth sounds. It is completely impossible not to
like this one. Second best song on the album!

'My Prawns' is like I said, just totally mindblowing. A jangly electric guitar
starts out alone, but is soon joined by a disted guitar and bass. All leading
into a single key synth with Nina's voice with her charming Finnish accent,
bringing back the jangly guitar again, then the disted guitar moves in more
and more, and finally everuthing goes into the mayhem which is the chorus.
And that is where Nina's voice really goes into high-performance mode. It's
alarmingly good. Give this song a single to reside on!

'Focus' is a slower pace song with a muffled effect on Nina's voice in low
key, and it almost sounds like they've used the effect on the instruments
as well. It does not sound bad at all in fact. I'm not sure if anyone cares,
but there are filters adding a low thumping, throbbing sound to everything
using them. Giving the listener a feeling of standing outside a club where
they play deep bass and drum tracks. I would not be surprised if they are
using one of those here.

'Night Out' I'd almost like to call a punk song because of the fast and heave
chorus pieces, but the parts between them are in another division - the more
Fidget like division.

The bottom line is, Fidget is definitely Sweden's only band that sounds like
this, and I'd say that's a pretty good reason to at least listen to the album
if you have never heard them before. Chances are you'll find a new love.

Hi, I am Christine from Denmark and this is just a short note to let you
know that I am on the list as well. I don't know that much about
scandinavien indiemusic, since I am more into metal, hard-core and
rapmetal, but there is a quite a few bands from Scandinavian, which have
caught my interest as well.
At the moment I am trying to do my thesis from a university in Denmark,
Aarhus, about genderrelated subjects in latest rockmusic. Mostly I write
about bands with female members, since women have had a lot of problems
in an original misogynist universe - the world of rockmusic at it's core!
But luckily the past few years have shown a great change. In connection
to my thesis, does anybody know if the Icelandic band Kolrassa Krokidandi
is available (in the preferably, since I am staying in Scotland at the
moment) in a more "friendly" version than Kynjasogur? Though I know
a bit of Icelandic, it is difficult to understand everything on their
record. And what about Drain from Sweden, how do I get their record?
Someone will probably know. Finally a question regarding the list, how
many people are subscribing and/or contributing to it?

From Christine

I sent a letter a few days back(in bad swedish!) about a trek I'm planning
to make to a bunch of radio stations in the southeast US. I am co-owner of
a small indie studio originally from Malmo, but has just set up in Atlanta.
We have an album coming out any day now, and I've been busy contacting radio
stations(commercial, college and otherwise). I'm hoping to visit a lot of
them personally. I wanted to ask any of you out there if you have some good
music out there on cd(or good quality cassette) I'd be happy to take them
along with me and present them the same time I present our own stuff. The
stations will be mostly from the universities--I would think nearly any type
of music would be appreciated--but I think english lyrics are helpful here.
A newspaper clipping or an english bio is also a plus. Please send your
recordings to me at:

I guess that there are two videos because of the fact that there are people
in some countries (like the USA) who get seriously injured when they see
other people naked. I mean, in the "european version" of the video you can
see a woman (from behind) taking off her bra. And who knows what kind of
monster you will turn into if you see things like that too often :-).

I haven't really had a chance to listen to it that many times yet,
but in the meantime, I could say that I think it's better than
Holy Holy and Everybody Else. Even though I think there's a few
gems on both those album.. Oh well, I'm really bad at reviewing
records, I'll say something more about the album in a few days.

You're definitely right about that. It looks like the number of all-female
(or at least more female than male) bands in Sweden have increased lately.
Though it might also just be because more and more of them are getting
record contracts, more attention etc. I'm not sure. Candysuck for example
(one male member), have been around for several years, but they've just
released their debut album. Sindy Kills Me (now "resting") and The Pusjkins
are two other examples. Backfish is another band with only one male member -
who also released their debut album not long ago. Then we have the more
"new" ones, yet without any debut albums out - but will soon enough join
the club as well like Sahara Hotnights (AWSF) and Sparky (no contract).
Those are the ones that comes to my mind right now, but I'm sure there
are several others.

> And what about Drain from Sweden, how do I get their record?

You can try contacting their label MVG - mvg@mnw.se and ask them - they
are nice people. :-) Or check out the Swedish record mailorder places
on the net - you can find a bunch of links to such places at:

The first question is easy: "Live" (or normal) list today: 247 and
"Digest" list today: 58. It changes daily - but it has been around
250/50 for a while now.

But when it comes to contributing to the list - I have no idea, but
it isn't as many as I (and I expect everyone else) would like.

hello everyone, I'm Daniel. while I'm new on the list Erik told me to
write you all a few things about myself.

I'm into music, of course. Why would I be on the list if I wasn't.
It all started in 1983 (I was 9 then) when I bought my first record,
"Speak & Spell" by Depeche Mode. during the rest of the 80s I was one of
those hardcore DM fans and I still consider them as one of the best
bands in the world (actually i just received the new album "Ultra" in
the mail today. It's wonderful).

When Ride came along they kinda changed my view on music. From thereon
I've been into "indie" music and today I listen to quite a lot of those
bands. My swedish favourites are bob hund, Hardy Nilsson and Yvonne
(brilliant new album, really brilliant) and a few others.

I'm a journalist and has just about finished journalist school. I write
about music in the swedish daily paper "Hallands Nyheter" and I also
give my opinion on demos in "Goteborgs-Posten Aveny".

Nowadays I don't have much time for working while I'm playing guitar
with the band Fidget and we've just released our debut album.
By the way, you all want me to break a secret? Fidget are gonna support
Gene on their scandinavian tour in two weeks. Four dates and I'm kinda
happy.

hope to heaar from you all,

Yeah! i saw Bob Hund at Tavastia (warm up gracefully by none other than
Larry And The Lefthanded)... it wasn't so much the music, indie rawk (that
Pavement used to do better) treated with a thorough cut and paste, start &
stop method (that YUP & a few others has been doing for years.) the thing
that made me drool jealously on my invasion boots was their stage presence.
like the singer... i mean, i could go into detail about all the little
things he did, running around the audience etc. but the main thing is, he
really looked like he liked what he was doing. and hey, they've got
scandinavia's coolest guitar player too.

Oh yeah, a name to remember: Whistle Pig. really catchy sonic youth guided
by voices rawk'n'roll combo with idiotically brilliant melodies to be found
under the distortion.
