Ok, saw a poster for it today.. Bear Quartet, Stickboy, Elephantine,
Sun Boy, 55 SEK, 19:00-21:00, Sporthallen, Lulea.
I haven't heard Elephantine and Sun Boy, so it will be interesting,
I guess these bands are some kinda pop bands..

Sunboy are a couple of young boys (look who's talking:-) 16-17 years.
they play pure pop, mostly influated by BQ and early Popsicle.

Lots of rumours/truths, or whatever it is, about Cardigans spreading
around. I have heard that they were planning to take a break to do some
solo projects, but nothing about them splitting up. And the last thing I
heard was that these plans have been cancelled too, they are making a new
effort (as Cardigans, with Nina) in USA instead. I do not know if this is
the real truth but - splitting up - no, don't think so.

Do you know if this is some kind of "members only" appearance or something.
If it is, it might be worth the money becoming a member of Rock D'Amour, I
guess. It seems a bit odd that eggstone should do two appearances so close
to each other here in Linkoping.

/Micke, also wondering if there are any Cornershop recordings available

Maybe it has something to do with last year's controversy with the police,
right after the festival they said they'd keep a much lower profile the
next year..

No no no... what is the point of starting rumors like these? That
girl didn't read the full article. She should be slapped for it
too.

What the article does say is that this autumn, the band is taking a
six month break from touring, recording, promoting, whatever. They're
tired of spending almost every day on the road - and who wouldn't be?
Bengt och Peter will put together a hard rock band and play during
this break. All Nina said about a solo career is that if she got
an interesting suggestion or idea, she would think about it. But,
of course, only during their six month break.

It's pretty far between "
Nina is splitting from the cardigans" to
"
the band is taking a six month break this autumn". I sure hope
someone makes her translate the article..

Perhaps they're (The Wellmeant) isn't trying hard enough? But according
to the band, they (Harry Lime) said they would come and see the band
perform in Stockholm at Kulturhuset last week, but they never showed up.
Which in turn made the band think the label wasn't interested in them
any longer.

My thoughts exactly. I've also just seen it, but .. There are so many
records out I want to listen to at the moment, but I just haven't got
the time. I did buy the new Eggstone EP "
April And May" (and of course
The Charlatans new album) yesterday, but I knew I would love them
anyway so I didn't have to listen first.

Hiya,

Saw the cardigans last night, managed to get front row, near centre, which
is something I haven't bothered trying to do since ummm 1994 for the Pet
Shop Boys.

The support, "
Eat the Menu" want to be the Sugarcubes so badly - even the
dress that the lead singer wore looked like something bjork would wear.

I'm not sure if it was my frontline position or not, but the mixing effort
sounded quite close to horrible - I could barely hear Nina's vocals, or the
lead guitarist, while the bass guitar and drums were loud. This improved as
the set went on though...

Magnus the bass player lost his balance during one of his wild rock-abouts
and knocked over his amp/speaker stack behind him - It was kind of amusing
as they had to kinda cut the song short and the drummer did a bit of fill-in
drumming type stuff while a pack of roadies tried to fix it. Magnus was
quite red-faced but they all took it quite well. Overall, they appear to
have a good time on stage, and not take things too seriously (see: Mansun) -
For some reason when Mansun went into rawk-out frenzy mode at the end of
their set they were shameful and embarrasing, but when the Cardigans do it,
it's cool and funny...

Comment of the night was from Nina who announced "
Rise & Shine" by saying in
a tongue-in-cheek kind of way, something along the lines of "
This is one of
our older songs, from when we were an indie-pop band, before we became
`mainstream`". It seemed that they were a little reluctant to play lovefool.
ace.

Anyway, the band was a lot of fun, Nina chatted to the crowd a little, and
did "
kissy-kissy" noises to the crowd through the mike at the end.

A couple of points of trivia which I got from Nina when I spoke to her after
the show;

- - The studio where the Cardigans recorded their last album and where Saint
Etienne have just finished recording their new album is owned by Eggstone
(another ace swedish band if you havent heard of them).

- - The record label from Sweden that is now called "
Soap records" was
previously called "
Snap records" - The reason they changed the name is
because of the band "
Snap" (the crappy dance band of the early 90s).

Yes, it was definitely time to get it up and running, so after JL
decided we wouldn't include any sound-clips from the demo/single/album
of the issue from the start on friday last week, it "
only" took about
4 hours to send the whole thing (about 300 files) to Wineasy. And
then there's these layout problems with Macintosh browsers, but it's
up and running, and I'm working on the layout problems.

That would be "
Hit" - which really _is_ a hit IMHO. The elaborate
plug at the end of the video was pretty cool - the whole song
sort of tellin' stories about the album cover.

This is what the evening newspapers in Sweden is saying too and, even if it
hurts to say anything good about these papers, it seems to be the truth. At
least Expressen seemed to have been in contact with someone who knows the
band.

New subject: Starmarket live, at Herrgarn, was exactly as I had expected -
totally brilliant. I think that they put some extra efforts in their
appearance because of the fact that their friends in Cloudberry Jam were in
the audience. When speaking with Starmarket I got the impression, even if
they did not say it out loud, that they were a bit disappointed about their
new album selling so badly in Sweden. And they should be. "
Sunday's worst
enemy" is the only swedish album I am already sure will be on my "best of
1997" list. If you have a feeling that you have not given this band a
decent chance, listen to "
Repetition", "Worn-out", "Teenicider" (all from
the already mentioned album), "
Amber" and "Your style" (from their first,
s/t, album) and realize - this is World class popcore!

Yes, on his BBC world service show he played Hit (which by the way is a
bit of a hit in England: last week it was number 20 in the charts). he
said that he didn't usually like the wannadies records very much, but that
het did like this one and that it was remixed by someone from 3 colours

Thing is, in my opinion at least, their sound has changed considerably
between the two albums, enough that maybe that would scare away a fan or
two. On the first album you could hear a lot more of an indie-rock
influence (I remember someone from the band actually cited Superchunk, the
posies and Archers of Loaf as his main influences for the first album) but
the second album goes almost more of a pop-punk route, with a much more
edgy production job...
Don't get me wrong though, I still think the second album is good,
but in a lot of ways it might as well have been put out by a different
band. It wasn't really the followup I'd wanted (ditto for the calendar
ep...)

Another shame about this band is the almost non-existent press they've
gotten here in the states. Though maybe their first album would've gone
over better, I haven't really heard much about them over here (and it's
impossible to get their stuff in stores here, even though you can get some
dolores stuff like Randy) except for a review of Calendar EP in Punk planet
that ripped it to shreds... I think they might've gotten a decent review in
Maximum Rock and Roll, but still, it's not much...

Anyway, enough of my ranting. What it all comes down to is that I'd love
to see 'em live but it'll probably never happen 'cause I live in the
states...

Martin.

Yeah right. I'm a lazy poster, but i thought i'd share this. Robert
knows a guy on the _nation-wide Latvian Radio_! So he has this evening
show with indie stuff, and we popped in the studio just before
broadcast time.

So this guy gave me an hour to present swedish indie, live on the air,
all over Latvia!
My playlist:
Popsicle - Soft (the loong version)
Yvonne - For Her Pleasue
Kent - Kram
Bob Hund - En rikedom av sandkorn
Soundtrack OOL - Instant repeater 99
Di Leva - Everyone is Jesus
and a bunch of other tracks, Fireside, Instant Life, etc. OK, not sooo
indie all of it, but good music at least. And we talked inbetween the
tracks, about Bob Hund gigs, about Kent's magic show at lollipop,
whatever.

So it was a great day in Riga, Roberts managed to tape 5xC90 of my CDs,
and i got a bunch of latvian indie tapes with obscure stuff. Review
later.

if you talk to them again, tell them not to lose faith. we've had similar
things happen to us. i've probably told the guys on the label how i feel
about it, how strongly i object to that kind of behaviour, but now i guess
i'll have to give them another reading... btw, i don't know how they feel

listen to the lyrics to "
april and may"! per sunding sings something along
the lines of "
sara and june", right? well, he is actually singing about
sara reis, eggstone fanatic supreme, fozzie editor and concert arranger
with kalmar nation. you should have seen her face when she played that
passage of the album this christmas! wow.

Could be - well, I hope it is at least. I agree that it is somewhat
strange that they're playing twice in Linkoping with only a couple
of weeks between, though I can think of a number of explanations for
that. 1. There's no communication between Rock d'Amour and Rock The
Nation. 2. Their gig at Herrgar'n was only available to students
(who normally never visit Skylten, mostly due to the fact that Rock
d'Amour doesn't want them to), 3. It has got something to do with
the Student Orchestra Festival (SOF) which starts on May 7th and
ends on May 11th.

In any case - you should always support your local rock scene, so
it definitely is a good idea to become a member of Rock d'Amour.

It's good to hear that they're alive and well. I liked what I heard
last year, and if they're even better now, they should have that
contract in their hands soon enough, if there's any justice in the
world. :-)

Regarding Emmaboda - Do you know who's playing at the promo CD release
party in Vaxjo? The reason I ask is that I just heard some alarming news
that the arrangers changed their minds about The Wellmeant playing
at the party, and a rumour that Stargazer (Energy Rekords) took their
place. If that is true, I'm starting to get second thoughts about
supporting that festival. You just don't tell a band they're going
to play and then change your mind a month later because some label
pushed (or whatever happened) harder for another band.

I can't go this year either unfortunately, but I still want to know

Hello everyone !

I read with fear and horror the bad rumours about the Cardigans
splitting up.
It is absolutely wrong ! I just got a letter from the band telling me to
deny fiercely all these rumours. They were not even sure of the break
this Fall, and they say it won't be 6 months, either.
According to the management it has nothing to do with a
misunderstanding, just another bad rumour to sell more newspapers.

So here you have the "official" version of the thing.

Their first album got a very good review in an american fanzine called
"Beacon" or something. They (the fanzine) had expected another swedish band
trying to sound exactly like some american band but, to their surprise,
they found that Starmarket had a sound that didn't sound like anything

On thursday this week (30 april) Bizarre are performing live in Tallinn.
They are doing 2 30-minute sessions - the longest ever Bizarre concert.
It takes place in "Von Grahl" - a theatre&club (2in1).
The concert will include all the songs from Cafe De Flor + 3 or 4 new
tracks.

Tristan from the band said that he didn't know if they'll bother to do
such a long live again (usually they play only 5-6 newest songs).

There is also a finnish band performing, but regrettably I've forgotten
the name (maybe someone can help on this one??). The concert is
organized by the biggest Estonian commercial radio Radio 2.

and that's it!

CONCERT REVIEW: Beck / The Cardigans / Atari Teenage Riot
- Lang Whitaker

When the Riot finally subsided, The Cardigans took the
stage. They appeared to be the anti-Riot. What was so appealing
about The Cardigans was that they played with all the posturing
and preening of the Riot, but with their tongues firmly planted
in cheek. Their set was an equal mix of songs off of their latest
album, _First Band On The Moon_, and their earlier American release
_Life_. Lead singer Nina Persson had enough moxie to make up for her
trying to hide behind the mike stand the entire time, and guitarist
Peter Svensson was really impressive. They opened with what had to
be the happiest version of Black Sabbath's "Ironman" ever played.
The rural crowd wasn't very familiar with The Cardigans' tunes,
but when The Cardigans ended their set with the ubiquitous
"Lovefool", the audience finally began to feel at home.

I totally and utterly agree with all of the above - Starmarket's latest
album is _ace_, and they're just a fantastic live band. All true. Though
I have the feeling, regarding the low sales of the album, that it depends
on Dolores. I'm not that informed on how much they have promoted the
album, but from what I have seen in papers/tv/radio/whatever, it hasn't
been very much. And, unfortunately, Starmarket records doesn't sell
by themselves (however you write that in english.. - you know what I mean),
but only to their, still somewhat few, fanatic fans. How about a video
to one of the songs, for example? Anyone seen one?

I'm sure Honey Is Cool will sell loads of copies of their album, just
because their ad campaign on ZTV is just everywhere. See what happened
with This Perfect Day for example.

I'm not sure I agree about the "punk" part, though I definitely agree
that they have changed their sound. I love their first album, but
loathe "Calendar", and love their new album. I would agree on the
"punk" part when it comes to Calendar, but not the new album. In
my ears, it's got more of a hardcore/metal feel.

Ha ha! That is true, but only for their first singles/EPs and album IMHO.
Sunday's Worst Enemy is far away from Husker Du/Sugar, and Calendar.. well,
it is definitely nowhere near Bob Mould.

That is truly a strange way of showing appreciation / interest in a
band, but no worries, I'll tell them. Though as two of the guys in
the band have another (punk) band, which they are mighty successful
with (they're going on a european tour this summer) - I have a feeling
they will concentrate on that band after the number of disappointing
events (not Hultsfred, not play at the Emmaboda release party, Harry
Lime not showing up at the gig, and so on), which is _so_ sad. I hope
they get some good news soon. They will at least play in Stockholm
again pretty soon (with Aquadays at Tre Backar on May 23rd).

Heh heh heh - isn't that just wishful thinking on her side, or is it
_really_ true? It might just as well be "Sara & June" - the two girls
singing those .. umm, pre-school pop "things", you know... It's
