I can't agree with you more. Their new studio (a bit outside the
center of town (where their old one was)) has been seriously worn
and torn by CBJ during the summer (they've been recording their
new album which is to be released in Japan in November and in the
rest of the world early 1998 - final mixes are made right now),
and should be just about perfect now. I don't think they would have
spent two entire, steaming hot months there if it hadn't been. :-)

Subject: Danish Indie: Mew
For those of you near or in Copenhagen, Denmark - I have to recommend that
you go and see the Danish band "Mew" at Rust on August 21st (on thursday!).
They start at 9pm (21:00) and the entrance fee is only 40 DKr - well
worth the money.
They're simply amazing - sort of carrying on the tradition from
My Bloody Valentine. Actually - no one should miss this band, and
that's why I've included them on an upcoming tape chain (without
any Swedish bands at all) called "Scandinavian Indie (for your soul)".
That is to say - I'll post a list of what's on the tape in a day or two
and more info about the tape chain.

Hello:
I'm a new subscriber to this list and a big fan of Lars Hollmer and the
groups he has belonged to over the years though my favourites are
still his solo LP's. Happily two of the best Hollmer solos have been
reissued, though hopefully the remaining ones will be forthcoming
through ReSource Records.
However, I'm having difficulty finding out about another Swedish?
artist. I'm told that Robert Broberg has done numerous records but
the ones that interest me are those he did under the name "Zero" for
Silence records in the late 70's. There was a single and an LP. I'd very
much like to obtain these records or even just be able to hear them.
I'm hoping that someone in Sweden may know more or be able to help.

Personally, I tried to avoid the Water Festival area as much as possible.
Too crowded, you know. But I did attend one good show last night, arranged
by the honourable guys at the Bottleneck club, in cooperation with Luger.
At 22:00 Monster entered the stage. They were not supposed to play, but
since some representatives from a US label (name escapes me) are currently
in Sweden scouting for new talents (they checked out Mazarine Street and
Silver Bullet @ Studion on Saturday night) and they had expressed interest
in Monster, they had gotten the opening spot this night. I know the guys in
the band dislikes the comparison with the Clash, but that's really the only
point of reference I can think of. It's basically punk with a nice ska/reggae
groove to it, complete with organ and a brass section. Always fun to see, but
honestly I think they have softened up a bit too much lately. A year ago or
so, there was plenty more of onslaught to their music.
Next up for public scrutiny were Sammy, a pop band from New York. I had never
heard them before, but it turned out to be pretty swell lo-fi slacker pop
with a healthy dose of attack to the guitars. My friend said they were a
severe case of Pavement ripoffs, but since I've hardly ever heard Pavement
I wasn't too bothered by that. All in all it was an OK live experience,
although I'd probably never pick up an album with them. As it happened, this
was Sammy's *last* live show ever. Somehow it made me feel a bit sad, that
these guys were playing a Sunday night show in Stockholm of all the places,
getting a pretty lukewarm - though still heartily - response. Beats me why
they don't go out with a bang on homeground like CBGB's, Coney Island High,
or some other NY venue.
Finally, at midnight, Teddybears jumped into action, and it seemed like most
people had come for this. Probably since it was the 'Bears first show in
Stockholm in a long time. The band appeared to be in a very good mood, and
Pat Scab proved to be the perpetual entertainer. They blazed through a 30
minute set... a bit short, yeah, but it was getting late: Kanzi, Fish Out Of
Water, Goldfinger, The Robots, Magic Finger, Step On It, and a couple of new
songs that were quite gentle for being Teddybears.
Next Sunday, Aug 31st, there's another show at the Bottleneck club (located
at the Tre Kronor bar in Old Town) with (once again) Monster, Fidget, and
Grand Tone Music (the band formerly known as Salt). Should be good too.

"Songs for the Jet Set" is a unique escapist fantasy pop compilation
devised by Mike Alway, founder of the highly individual eighties theme
label él (a successful project that was a creative influence on the
current Japanese pop scene). Instigator of the original Everything but
the Girl (when he, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt disguised anger and punk
attitudes within the suave musical packaging of Cole Porter) and a
figure on the English Pop-Art scene having managed early incarnations
of The Monochrome Set and The Soft Boys and having "discovered" such
influential artists as Felt.
Mike is now launching If.Records in Europe and Japan and this, his
flagship compilation, will be released in Europe this autumn in
association with Siesta of Madrid, the most progressive and stylish
western pop label of these times.
"Songs for the Jet Set" is a surprising, cultured record that
thoroughly disproves the long-held theory that novelty or
"constructed" pop may only be of low artistic value. This compilation
is a seamlessly constructed personal essay with something of a sixties
film soundtrack shape that is full of melody and humour and mystery.
The overall programme has a collage feel to it. It is, in a sense,
quite polarised in style with an emphasis on vocal performance
showcased by material of the refined class of "Barbarella", "We can
fly", "The emperor of oranges", "I am a kitten", "Leslie Phillips in
Santiago" and "Kites are fun" at once complimented by very svelte
instrumental numbers like "Wallpaper", "Expo Tenerife" and the
cinematic title track.
The scope of this record is one of artistry and intelligence in pop
with a lightness of touch that could provide something of an antidote
to the shallow gratification and pub-rock sensibilities of "Brit-Pop"
and similarly tired genres such as USA Guitar Indie and "Girl Power".
Perhaps the most precocious performances of the whole LP are provided
by Pop´s "Peter Pan", Simon Turner as Loveletter. Turner, former teen
idol (planned by Jonathan King to be the English answer to David
Cassidy), enigmatic British film and television star, "Toy-Boy" of
Brit Ekland. At the height of punk, Simon went to the notorious Roxy
Handcuffed to the late Robert Mitchum (alongside whom and with Joan
Collins he was working in the controversial -and very bad- Michael
Winner remake of "The big sleep"). Turner was the King of Luxembourg
for él records, making two important, widely acclaimed albums that
established the label´s identity and sensibility in Japan and
intrigued some western hedonists. A dilettante and apparent musical
contradiction - a first generation teenybopper yet composer of around
thirty film soundtracks through the last decade including exciting and
eclectic scores for the more popular films of the late Derek Jarman.
If Simon Turner is the most mature of the record´s protagonists,
Laura, lead singer of Fantastic Everlasting Gobstopper is, at just 13,
by far and away the youngest. Gobstopper really are the first
authentic kids psychedelic aggregation, the first to deliberately
confuse the strange and the cute to seduce the Japanese and it is
testament to her genuine talent that her performances on the can-ish
"Schoolgirl psychedelia" and the Japanese "Lolita complex" anthem "I
am a kitten" (made a huge domestic hit by Kahimi Karie) match
Loveletter for cool and unconscious sensuality.
Fantastic Everlasting Gobstopper are soon to begin recording their
debut album, the conceptual masterpiece, "Something nasty in the
nursery" which will be produced by Sean O´Hagen of Stereolab, High
Llamas and Micro Disney Fame.
Milky - a twenty year old Indian girl at school in Paris - makes a
stunning, artless, debut, co-written with Momus (one or the most agile
writers in the english language) recalling vividly the irresistible
and esoteric Astrud Gilberto in a delicious wash of sound, while
elsewhere the cartoon scat and uplifting harmonies of tomorrow´s
world, the best of Britain´s new generation of vocal groups blend in
beautifully with the vivid mediterranean instrumental textures of
Wallpaper.
Wallpaper are the first actual instrumental group to draw the majority
of their inspiration and material from cinema. Their "set" includes
selections and pastiches of composers from Christopher Komeda to
Dudley Moore, from Nino Rota to Nelson Riddle. If Wallpaper did not
exist, you would have to invent them.
Viva Maria is in some ways the voice of If.and a lover of Orson
Welles, Lorca, Powell & Pressburger and Rioja. Selections are Dudley
Moore´s shouting pop masterpiece "Love me!" from the "Top of the pops"
dream sequence from "Bedazzled" in which he co-starred with Peter Cook
alongside the plaintive, seemingly uncomplicated "Nothing to lose"
from the Blake Edward´s comedy "The party". The film starred Peter
Sellers and the song was performed by wistfully but with a touch of
darkness by Claudine Longet who would later accidentally shoot her
lover, skier, Spider Sabich and much controversy would ensue.
South American Getaway is entirely the work of Ibón Errazkin, a
handsome, masterful Basque guitarist hailing from San Sebastian,
Errazkin is the missing link between Django Reinhardt and Hector
Villa-Lobos. Recognised widely as one of the most gifted, most
progressive Spanish talents of the new avantgarde, it would not be
unfair to describe Ibón as the last member of Les Sixes. An Erik Satie
for today.
In these times of mediocrity, vulgar, boring careerism and an
atmosphere of dismal conformity that has diminished the influence of
pop music, "Songs for the Jet Set" is a refreshing and coherent look
at an imperious world of make-believe.
The record concedes none of it´s commercial potential in remaining
elusive yet accessible and in defying easy classification.
Once upon a time, all great pop records were made this way.

hey,
i've been buying loads of albums and singles this summer, mainstream indie
i guess, stuff like: teenage fanclub, echo and the bunnies, oasis, verve,
primal scream, hurricane #1, morrissey, prefab sprout to name a few...
now fall is just around the corner and i cant see any swedish or scan-indie
releases.....(i do know kent and wepping willows, not so indie but hey!!!)
so let me know about future releases....cant wait to spend my money!

Okay, so this is going way back but I remember someone mentioning something
about swedish bands that do cool covers, swedish or non. To that end I
just figured I'd let you know about the Swedish punk band Randy's cover of
Lita Ford's Kiss me Deadly... simply stated, it's brilliant. it's just
great. They get all the screams and guitar wank down just right. It's
amazing. It alone makes buying the otherwise equally brilliant "and the
rest is silence" completely worthwhile... have a look...

Yes, it's time for another tape chain - and this one is a completely
"no swedish bands included" one. Why you might ask?
I actually made this tape for the guys in Eggstone in the first place, as
they were interested in hearing all of these bands I keep raving about -
but when I was finished with it - I realized it was a pretty good one for
sending out on a tape chain, so I made a second copy.
If you've never been on / heard of a tape chain before, you may want to
know what it is, how it works, and so on. So here it is, sweet and simple:

The way a tape chain works:
1) Someone compiles a tape, which he/she think is so good, others
should really hear it too.
2) This person announces that he/she has compiled a tape and that
those who are interested in hearing it send in their postal
(snail mail) address to be put on a tape chain.
3) The person collects these addresses for about a week or two,
then arranges them in the best way possible and writes them
down on a list.
4) The tape is sent to the first person on the list - together
with the list (of persons who are on the tape chain) and
perhaps a paper with information about the bands on the tape.
5) The person who received the tape __copies__ the tape and the
paper with the information (if he/she wants to that is) as

And here's what to do if you're interested:
1) Those who are interested in receiving the tape send in their
postal (snail mail) address to me (chief@lysator.liu.se) as
soon as possible stating "I want to be included on the
tape chain - thanks".
2) I will collect addresses for a week or two - then arrange them
and write them down on a list, and then send the tape to the
first person on the list.
3) When you have the original tape in your hands - please copy the tape
as quickly as possible, and send __the original tape__ to the next
person on the included list (after yourself) together with __the
pieces of paper__ that it comes with (info like this and the list
of addresses).
