And so does this. The bands decided to "change names", ie The Teddybears
Sthlm told the audience that they were Fireside and Fireside said they were
called Teddybears. After the concerts there were people who really believed
that they had seen Fireside first and Teddybears last on stage. Quite
pathetic, paying to see bands and not even knowing which bands they are
seeing. I guess bands like Jumper are the only ones who can work in
arrangements like this. Starmarket were quite frustrated, last year, about
having to play for people who were more interested in the price for beer
than in the music.
BTW, speaking of Jumper. I am not a very religious type of guy but
"sacrilege" is the only word I can think of when I hear their cover version
of Jakob Hellmans "Hon har ett satt". Hope people, for once, realize that
there is an original version that is _so_ much better.

I _completely_ disagree! I dug out an ancient tape with the Hellman
version on it at the weekend, and it confirmed my suspicions. The
Jumper version is a bit like how it should have been to start with.
What works really well, I think, is that the song is already the sort
of thing that Jumper do pretty well themselves, but with a bit extra.
One of the very few covers that work better than the original. (See
if I can think of any more: the Pet Shop Boys' 'Always on my mind',
Aknestik's 'Jossain', Cocteau Twins' 'Frosty the Snowman'...)

I agree with Michael. The first, and only so far, time I heard Jumper's
version I thought it was a joke! The sad thing is that a lot of those
"teeny boppers", ie Jumper's fans, have probably never heard the original.

Not very Scan. Indie, but here we go: U2's Unchained Melody (as they did
it live during the 1992-1993 tours), R.E.M.'s Superman, Nirvana'a The Man
Wgo Sold The World (I _am_ a Bowie-fan, believe me!) and of course
Imperiet's Mark hur var skugga (not that I've heard the original, but who
has? ;).

I disagree. Why shouldn't it be possible to just go to a concert to enjoy
the sound/noise of music without actually being a fan of the playing band?
Personally I probably wouldn't do it, as I seem to go to too many concerts
anyway, but I know a certain female friend of mine that would do it
anytime. She never buys any records and knows almost nothing about bands
(for instance she had never even heard of Oasis or Suede in February last
year!), but still she loves music and is constantly listening to the
radio.

Every once in a while I'm go to a certain club even if I haven't heard any
of the bands yet...sometimes it's because I've heard a buzz about one of
them, sometimes it's just to see something new; who knows, maybe one of
them will become a new fav? Notice I qualified that first sentence with
the word "certain" though...there are some clubs I wouldn't be caught dead
in unless a national act I liked was playing there. But there are one or
two around town that consistently have good shows and have a built-in
audience (as opposed to lots of other places which have bands but each
band brings in its own clique which *definitely* would never come see
another local band, they'll only go to see/support their friends).

Cornelis Vreeswijk does make Thastrom sound like a school boy tryin g to
impres his teachers, or more likely his classmates. You should try it.

That is certainly a moot point. At least I disagree completely with it.
Some of my most enjoyable concert experiences have been with bands I hadn't
previously heard (although I might have read about them in some music rag),
i.e. U2 in 1981, Theatre of Hate in 82, Wall of Voodoo in 86, and
Stereolab two years ago at Studion. Going to see a band in this sort of
situation may of course be a hit or miss, but at least you're not trapped
with any preconceptions about what it's supposed to sound like which more
often than not boosts the experience. Simply put: you can take in the show
with a wide open mind. If then it happens to be a double/triple bill, and
some band member deliberately gives the wrong name, who am I to question that?

I can agree with this, however. I never understood the white trash kids
that go to Hultsfred just to never leave the camping area.

While some of you are discussing the pros and cons of Jakob Hellman
and Jumper (who never ever will have anything to do with INDIEPOP -
sort of like comparing the young Elvis Costello with Hanson - there,
now the non swedes will get what you're all on about) I spent last
night drinking coffee, pogoing and smiling like a madman at the bob
hund show at Stockholms Kafe 44.
The band got on at 8PM and the place was packed with underage thrill
seekers - all-age-shows are always a notch above the rest - (people
were even getting refunds cause they couldn't see anything).
Perspiration was dripping off the ceiling and the bob hund boys pulled
their most astonishing moves. New songs! Old songs! Favorite songs! It
was one of those evenings when the world indeed is a good place to be
alive.
Johnny Essing played standing up (look kids no chair!!!) - Conny had
the most outstanding Ralf Edstrom hairdo, complete with the freaky
sideburns (marcus grimsbyfishmarket must be so proud to see his band
sporting such style) - Jonas had a new synthesiezer a Roland SH 1000 -
and Thomas bruised himself quite badly falling backwards onto the
stage.
Too bad most of you were missing out on the ACTION and the THRILLS!

What a...? What an activity! I thought you were all sleeping in tents in
Hultsfred already :-). Anyway, this Jumper vs Hellman topic is another one
of those topics were subjectivity is inevitable. And, I have to admit, I am
not the least objective when it comes to Jakob Hellman, I consider "...och
stora havet" to be one of the best swedish albums ever made. That doesn´t
mean the cover versions of the songs on it have to be bad (even if they
cannot be better) and I really made an effort and tried to listen to
Jumpers version. But after having been thrown between those violins and the
guitars for some minutes my ear drums felt like two extremely well used
doormats. Nope, I will continue listening to Jakob and forget about the
existence of this other version.

Well, since other people have started mentioning Bellman I find it
inevitable to mention Fred Akerstroms "Glimrande nymf". And then we have
that australian band, whose name I should remember, who did a great version
of Pet Shop Boys "Rent" on the "Absolut Hultsfred" album.

Hmm, I guess this is partly because of the fact that I am a master in
making myself unclear and partly because you don´t know about the nature of
this specific event. I don´t find it pathetic to go and see bands you have
never heard before, I do that all the time myself and I will probably spend
the next three days seeing a lot of new bands. What I find pathetic is that
the people who visit "Sommar-X" don´t even _care_ about which bands are
playing. What they care about is what is happening after the concerts -
disco with "Bailando", "Macarena" and you name 'em and everyone getting so
pathetically drunk that they won´t even remember if they have seen any
bands at all.

gracious folks at Darla Records but I think it's a Freak Scene only
release. There are no signs of the beautiful Darla logo anywhere on
the sleeve but who knows. Juan and the folks at Darla are pretty close
knit.

heyhello, i recently joined the list so i thought i'd make a basic
presentation of what i do.. My name is Jonas and i run the not-too-famous
SLOWBALL label from stockholm. Interested or not... here is our discography:
slowball 1 - RELEASE CITY - tape comp. the line-up includes the mountain
goats, push kings, will simmons, nothing painted blue (USA), bent spanner
arty banner, pluxus, phlegm, in a spring (sweden), national heroes, brown
tower (UK), furtips, bingo trappers (netherlands), wio, mote,
dodes'ka-den (belgium) plus a few more bands. it is 60 minutes long.
actually sold out but RE-RELEASE CITY will be out in july.
slowball 2 - PUSH KINGS 7" - the park/jesse janowitz
also this release is sold out. a re-release may or may not
show up in the future. watch out for the new issue of sound affects. Push
kings are on the cover and there is an article about them.
slowball 3 - PHLEGM/6 CENTS & NATALIE split 7". 2 songs by swedish
bi-fiers phlegm & 2 by sean from tully craft (USA). this is delayed but
will be released in a week or so.
slowball 4 - PLUXUS "music inspired by the arcitechture of Kennedy
international airport" 60 min tape. debut release by these
space-yougsters from stockholm. beats-oriented space with distinct
melodies. recomended!
upcomming: new PLUXUS tape in july, PLUXUS 10 or 12" after the summer,
IOTA 7" after summer (post-rock per defenition from gothenburg) plus more
stuff by phlegm and more.
we also plan to arrange a festival in stockholm called KRAUTSTOCK. At
this point we can not tell you exactly where or when. But rest assures, i
wuill send info to the list. This far the bill includes PLUXUS, IOTA,
EFQ-project. More to come
also avalible form slowball is the PHLEGM releases on losercore and i
also believe i have a few copies left of that first Push Kings 7" on
Chunk.

The NEW BOMB TURKS are playing in Stockholm on tuesday at the studio,

Definitely recommended! Pluxus did a good first ever show last month
when they opened up for the seminal English industrial/ambient band
Zoviet-France (read about them in the new issue of Pop) at Kafe 44.
That will prove to be a night to cherish forever...

Shouldn't it be F.EQ. Project? In any case, I urge anyone who has ever
been seriously into bands like Spacemen 3, Fuxa, or E.A.R. to check out
these guys from Lidingo (formerly known as Radiance, btw). Their live show
is a total mindfuck... walls of droning guitars paired with space-y noise
from analogue synths, backed up by a live dummer laying out desolate beats.
Do keep us informed about that Krautstock thingy.

Hi all,
This discussion about covers made me start thinking about if there are any
really good covers made by scan-indie bands, and the only really great one
I could think of was How Do I's version of ABBA's Knowing Me Knowing You.
Then there are some OK ones, like Wannadies - Blister In The Sun, Poverty
Stinks - Paranoid and Cardigans - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
Can't say I'm particularly interested in hearing about other people's best
of lists, but they're fun to come up with, so here are some favoutite non-
scan-indie covers of mine too... :) Low - Transmission, Swans - Love Will
Tear Us Apart, Flying Saucer Attack - Outdoor Miner and Dinosaur Jr - Just
Like Heaven.
On a completely different note... My CD collection is growing too much too
fast, and I've decided to try and sell off some of the stuff I never listen
to, or for some other reason don't need. I've put togeteher a list of some
150 CDs that are all for sale, for decent prices. Mainly english/american
indie/alternative from the 80's and 90's, and some swedish stuff as well.
I won't waste bandwidth by sending the list to the list, so if you're

Just a brief report for those who were not at the Hultsfred festival.
My eyes are filled with dust, my ears are screaming, my feet aching badly
and my body feels as if most of the more than 20 000 visitors have bumped
into me at least one time each. Still, my lips are smiling, because it was
just as fun as usual and the people visiting the festival were nicer than
ever.
I have to admit that I neglected the scan-indie bands somewhat, which is
quite understandable with so many great concerts with The Charlatans
(groovy!), Wu-Tang Clan (double-groovy!), Rage Against The Machine (can
thousands of people shouting "you got a bullet in your fucking head" be
wrong? ehh, well..), Baby Bird and Nick Cave (though I have to admit that
Kylie Minogue sings the Elisa Day-part in "where the wild roses grow"
somewhat better than Blixa Bargeld do. But Blixa is still the coolest guy
on a stage). Also, you are welcome to try but I think you will find it
quite hard to convince me that The Prodigy is _not_ the best live-act in
the world right now. They were brutal the last time I saw them and the new
guitar-player has only reinforced this feeling.
Scandinavian bands then. Well, I found Petrol even lamer than last time I
heard them - they just don't act as if they relize they are on stage. And
they still use the same boring Nick Borgen-jokes. I just feel empty after a
Petrol gig (sorry Erik, just my personal opinion).
The Wannadies and Bob Hund were just as usual. I almost wish that they
would do a really bad gig once in a while, just to show people they know
how to do it, show that they are normal human beings (well, Wannadies are
quite "normal" on their records). But not this time, they were both great.
So were Eggstone, it must be quite hard to fail with that last, ace, record
out. Both Loosegoats and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives suffered, in my
opinion, from having to play too early in the day. It was very hot during
daytime and you had to concentrate on staying alive rather than on
listening to music.
Finally, I have to tell you about the SPOCK gig. This space-synth trio has
never been criticized for making revolutionizing and innovative music and
they have developed in a slightly less dramatic way than, say, Erasure and
Status Quo during the years. But what is so special with a SPOCK gig is
that you find yourself in a completely, fantastically, madly devoted crowd
who knows every word the band sings and who turns the whole area into a
dancing inferno. I don't know about any other band who has a crowd of fans
like this one. The "theater barn", where the concert was held, was
over-crowded. The feeling of devotedness (is that the right word?) spreads
even to those who are not fans and those people who didn't dance when
"Never trust a klingon" was played were probably already dead when they
arrived. End

Speaking of high volume, I watched the former death metal (now just _very_
heavy metal) band Entombed play too and I kind of enjoyed it. OK, I was
watching it from a "safe" distance but there are some tracks on their
latest album "To ride, shoot straight and speak the truth" that are quite
good (especially, I like the title track). If they could just get rid of
that fake satanism stuff...

someone mentioned that PLP did played those songs on their ordinary tour
this spring too. i didnt seen any of their gigs before hultsfred, this
year, so i dont know if its true or not. i agree that it wasnt too high, i
even was able to speak with me friend during the gig, and thats far to low
for the music PLP is playing ;o)

gig, and their version of roky ericksons "night of the vampire" was better
than ever before. fake satanism is far much better than true belivers, than
the mid 80s W.A.S.P. and Venom ;o)

Subject: Bob Hund on MTV (possibly)
Some of you might find it interesting to watch MTV Europe's Alternative
Nation on tuesday (the 24th). I have received a hint, via e-mail from alt
nation, that they might play "Dusseldorf" on that show. I hope it is true,
it would be the third time during just a few weeks that they play Bob Hund
on the show (they have played "Istallet for musik - forvirring" two times).
Bob Hund which, btw, also did a magnificient festival gig. And I mean
_festival gig_ which means that they did not just play their latest record
but also all their "old" classics like "fotoalbumet", "Graslok och
fagelsang", "Mer an sa kan ingen bli" and so on.

oh my god. bob tilton is touring sweden as of _this week_?!?! i had no
idea.. where and when don't matter, this is by far one of britain's finest
bands around. they sound a bit like rodan would have if they had been out
of washington d.c. and signed to dischord, instead of being out of
louisville, kentucky and on touch&go/quarterstick!
fans of fireside/him kerosene should take note. i think you'd enjoy the
show, even though bob tilton is a bit more complex and intense than
sweden's own purveyors of fine rock.

i think they played it on all 3 gigs ive seen with entombed since march 96

you know which ones I am replying to.
First of all: I think it is correct that PLP has played old Imperiet and
Thastrom songs earlier on their tour, that is what I have heard too. I just
don't get it, why? In interviews some years ago Thastrom claimed that he
detested everything he had done earlier and that he would never look back,
just forward. Now suddenly, at the age of 40, he is turning around and
looking back. It is not that I dislike these songs but I am just wondering
if it is not just a desperate attempt to win back his "old fans" from the
80s and late 70s. Well, anyways, I hope he starts looking forward again, it
would be sad if he ended his career with a swedish version of Die Krupps
(no way PLP is a swedish version of Ministry, as some people claim it is).
So, "Night of the vampire" was the Roky Erickson cover Entombed had
recorded. I am not an Erickson specialist so I wasn't sure. It did sound
great and I have a strong feeling it was somewhat heavier than the original
:-). I just don't understand how so, after what I have heard from others,
nice people can transform and become so aggressive on stage (even if former
vocalist Messiah Marcolin had a much more aggressive voice (or "growl")
than L-G Petrov, as far as I can remember from last time I saw them live
3-4 years ago).

he might just have got his 40 years crise? ;o) some pressure perhaps from
his fans? most people (except me) seems to want to hear the swedish stuff
more than PLP. i dont think the swedish songs he made at hultefred was that
good. have been more fun if he have made them more PLPish... i dont know
about the rest of you but when i listen to imperiet these days, do i not
understand why i liked them then... btw, it have been kind of reunion time
for old stuff for some years, so when he need some more money he will do
like kiss, sex pistols etc and re-unite ebba grön again ;o)

im hardly dont know anythong about roky... entombed released it first as an
7" (or was it 12"?) and i think its on their latest compilation album too.
