Has anyone heard a swedish band called Fuego? How do they sound? I have
just read some info about the band but nothing about their sound. I should
not, normally, be interested in a band that has Jonas Leksell (also in The

Records and Dolores are interested in Fuego, so...

Hey, was somebody at Semifinal on friday? if somebody doesn't release a 7"
by Lasse Girl i'll have to start a record-label. they're sort of like
Sweetheart playing pop... in the finnish meaning of the word.

Enter-man! are you guys coming over to Helsinki anytime in the near future
to play some rock'n roll action?

Also, it would seem that the UFO's have abducted The Duplo's 7"s while they
were on their way to finland from somewhere in eastern europe. i think we
need the Men In Black! (not really, hollywood needs an atom bomb)

and one last thing. how much does it cost to make a 7", what's the smallest
amount a factory is willing to do, and how much more does coloured vinyl
cost? i'd really appreciate if anybody is in the know on this thing.

Broder Daniel made their worst consert of all time, it was a sad thing to
see, they played bad, henric bergren sung very badly, and i cant imagine
anyone liked it at all! i feel for johan who made his last show with

There is a pressing plant in Czech Republic which is said to be very
reliable and to produce high quality vinyl. I don't know their exact costs
but I was told it is around 6-7 FIM/copy. The smallest pressing you can do
is 225 copies. I think the price depends somewhat on the color of the vinyl
you want to use, black being the cheapest and white the most expensive.
They produce also picture discs and weirdly shaped discs if you like.

As far as I know this is the very same pressing plant that most of the
Finnish indie labels use for their vinyl (like Bad Vugum and Trash Can),
but don't quote me on that.

Hope this helps,
Kimmo

Hey!
I think it it was one of the best gigs there. And the best BD concert
I've seen. They were completely wasted alright. But just seeing all
these people in front of the stage watching a band that couldn't play
and a singer that couldn't stand up really turned me on. I came to think
of a young Iggy with his Stooges. One other reson why I liked the gig
could be that I was completely out of my mind too.

The best gigs besides BD were in my opinion DIPPER and FIDGET.
Eggstone was fun too becuase they (Per) were quite drunk on stage and
rocked off well.

Some time ago, I wrote:

Looks like they have an e-mail address as well, so you can try mailing
and asking about their prices etc. It is:

gramofonove@pha.pvtnet.cz

Looking more closely at the brochure I got, it seems that they do
pressing even as small as 100 copies, the cost of which is 0,91
DM/copy + mastering (200 DM for a 7") & some other odd
costs. Pressing 500 copies costs 0,69 DM/copy and 5000 copies would be
0,66 DM/copy.

I haven't figured out all the aspects of record production (like
sleeves & labels) and to what extent they bring up the price, but as
far as I can see it isn't terribly expensive. So why don't we all just
start an indie label of our own :)

Subject: Honey Is Cool at the Water Festival

Well, yesterday night I saw Honey Is Cool at the Water Festival here in
Stockholm, so I thought I'd post a small review.

During the first day the arrangers demanded Vattenpass (tickets) to get
in to the shows, but they loosened up, and prefered to fill up the area
rather than seeing the bands playing to an empty field, so there was no
control at all on this stage.

As the last band of the evening (on stage 00.05) everybody were
expecting this to be a big act - "publikdragare" as we say in swedish,
and all the indiekids of stockholm were there. HiC played at a pretty
big stage, it almost gave a stadium feeling to the gig, but it was
obvious that they could not fill up the big space.

Well, on to the show. I haven't seen HiC for two years (?) now, since
they did that Kittenish showcase at Gino. Karins voice got me hooked
back then, and I was soo emotional and really loved it. Due to
misfortune i've missed them everytime they played in town until now.

I must admit I haven't bought the new album, but apart from Nach Heart,
the new songs didn't get to me yesterday. They had problems with the
instruments, and had to change drums between two songs. The bass player
said something like "It's gonna be quiet for a while, but you could
talk to each other meanwhile", which sounded stupid and dull. A good
band should be able to entertain its audience, no matter what happens
on stage. Now they lost momentum, and my pal who joined me at the gig,
suggested that we'd leave (many in the audience did so!).

After 5-6 songs they played Georgia, and I felt at home again. Still,
there was hardly any contact with the audience, and due to the back
lighting you couldn't even see their faces. So when they went off stage
after 35 minutes I had no desire to see them coming back on, But they
came back and did a steaming version of Another Round, which saved
their reputation. I love that song, and Karin shouted and squealed even
better than on the CD.

BTW, she has blond hair now, as some have already seen in the papers.
On stage that gives a more feminine appearance - if you didn't listen
to the music it was more Cardigans than Souls.

In all, I felt sorry for HiC, and hope i will see them in a smaller
place next time. They were not comfortable with playing at the Water
Festival, cause it demands much more interaction with the audience.
Even if the audience were indiekids, I believe most of them just passed
by to check them out, since it was free anyway. And in that situation,
you can't tell people off to stand and chat for minutes.

I had been to the Yulduz Usmanova and Habib Koite gigs (world music -
yeah! ;-) earlier the same night , and I have to admit I enjoyed myself
much more, simply cause they knew how to get attention and how to be
_present_ at the stage, and not just strumming along.

Nuff said, sorry for the rambling.

Well, I heard people that said that Henrik fell down the stairs when
walking up to the stage, so I guess that's true, though I didn't see
it myself. He did fall several times on stage as well (he's sort of
into falling one could say...)

I thought it was a quite good one. I have seen two shows that were a lot
worse (like in Emmaboda two years ago). They have never been about
singing or playing good, so if that annoys you, you've missed the point.
I guess not everyone can appreciate a band that is 100% pathetic and
brilliant at the same time.

Yvonne did a good show - much better than when I saw them earlier this
summer (when I also was a bit disapointed with their new album).
It wasn't just Henric who was smiling, most of the audience seemed to
have a smile on their lips as well, at least that's my impression.
I still think Yvonne used to be better though - and they have never
been even close to as good as they were at their first appearance in
Emmaboda (94 I think it was) IMHO.

> otherwise it was a great festival this year with lots of sunshine and
> great music! see you next year.

I agree. Emmaboda is a myth - and you just have to experience it.

Myself I was very pleased to see Dim and Wellmeant (at last). Most shows
were very short, and I think that's good since good concerts are almost
always short. But Wellmeants appearance felt like it was over almost
instantly. I don't know if their music made me loose the concept of
time, or if I was abducted by aliens. Anyway, I long to see them again
soon.

Sobsister seemed to get good reviews, at least the few that I've read.
I was still so amazed by Dim, who played just before them, so I was
really not able to get into anything else for a while at that moment.
A bit sad that both Dim and Wellmeant played in the afternoon - if I had
made the timetable, they would have gotten better (later) times.
Neither Dim nor Wellmeant brought any demos - don't they want to market
their music or what?

True. Of course it would always be stupid to call a band a "girl band" and
it becomes even more stupid when it is not true either. One other example
of this strange way of labelling bands: I have heard the story about The
Pusjkins being denied to play at the Hultsfred Festival several times now
but I still cannot believe my ears when I hear it again. The reason they
were denied: The quota of "girl bands" was filled!!

Subject: shameless promoting pt. 2

Heyhello,

Jonas from Slowball recordings here. just wanted to give those who are
interested the latest label news.

Slowball 03 is finally released after months of delays. It is a
PHLEGM/6CENTS & NATALIE split 7". Two songs by each band. Get it
directly from slowball or form FREAK SCENE if you live in stockholm.
Maybe some other swedish stores will have ot too. Distributors abroad are
darla, road cone, carrot top, blackbean, rough trade, RW, toothpick &
vinyl japan.

Slowball 02 was an amazing PUSH KINGS 7". It has been sold out since a
few months but a 2nd pressing is on its way. As soon as i have recieved
all pre-orders form my distributors I'll get the pressing procedure
going.

Slowball 04 is a PLUXUS tape which has been out for quite a while but im
so fucking excited about this band so I wanted to mention it again.
Weird beats and wonderfull analogue and digital keyboards. loops and
sometimes a guitarr. Slowball will soon release new PLUXUS music on
vinyl.

As for the planned KRAUTSTOCK festival things are progressing very
slowly.

Some slowball people tried to get some airtime on the student radio at
the stockholm university. We hoped to get a weekly 1.5 hour and we had
the most ambitious plans but they were not interested. They did not seem
to be interested in music at all. Well try to convince them again
though.

Tonight I'll see Dinosaur Jr in Stockholm which may or may not be good. I
also recomend FUCK at Studion september 1st. There are some good bands
on their way for later this year too. tacka luger for det.

take care,
jonas & slowball

Subject: studios?

Hi,
I'm quite new to this list, so this is my first posting.

I play in a band called Girliegerm, and we're about to record our first
single. We've never recorded in a proper studio before and the ones I
know of in the area of Vasteras are pretty shitty.

I would like to know if there are any good affordable studios around.
Mostly in the Svealand region.

thanx

I can truly recommend Jorgen Warnstrom's (Cloudberry Jam) Toodle
Recordings in Linkoping.

The guy is a total doll, he works til his eye's bleed, he realy care's
about POP music (no matter what style) and he's worked marvels for
acts like Chickenpox, Flakes, stevepops, aBLe, Sonic Surf City et al.
And he's a very reasonable guy so the prices are realy low.

If you're after a some what harder edged sound maybe Thomas Skogsbergs
metal-haven Sunlight is the right place (it's in Stockholm), and at
the moment Pelle Gunnerfeldt (of Fireside) is building his own studio
in Stockholm. It should be ready to go in a few weeks so if you're
daring you might want to give him a try.

The old location for Sunlight in Stockholm now houses a smaller studio
with a softer approach where red Sleeping Beauty, Riviera and Happy
Dead Men recorded most of their latest stuff.

Hope it helps----------------> Toby

I've been to the Atlantis studio on Karlbergsvagen, Stockholm, just to
look. It was a famous place for swedish artists in the 70's, and recent
users are old progg guys like Stefan Sundstrom, Anders F Ronnblom and
Kjell Hoglund.

Check it out, the guys who run it are nice people, and the sound is
very pure on the recordings at least.

Subject: More water festival ramblings (D JR, SooL, Cardigans, Blur)

Hey, what's up with you people? Did nobody go to the shows the last
days? It's been completely quiet here...

Anyway, I went to see Dinosaur JR at the Water Festival here in
Stockholm, and also the ill-fated Blur/Cardigans/Soundtrack of our
lives gig yesterday.

The Dinos were great, much more alive than usually, they even talked to
the audience. ;-)

J Mascis freaked out with his guitar a few times, sort of shaked it
madly while playing it, and a lot of headbanging going on. Boy, he's
got a lot of hair to shake. Nice, long guitar solos, went on forever. I
don't have much of their stuff, but i liked what i heard: Repulsion
(yeah!), Feel the pain, Out There, Freak Scene, Wagon, What else is
cool (looong solo), and some emotional sad ballad (sort of) that was
great.

Can't recall if they played Take a run at the sun, maybe they didn't? I
miss it, but maybe i didn't pay attention.

Murph was funny, when they came back for encores he went "Ya just can't
get enuff of tha ruck, can ya!" with a cool southern accent.

Yesterdays show:
So, those of you who were there know that Riddarholmen turned into
chaos as thousand of kids with vattenpass tickets (150 SEK) couldn't
get in cause the place was already full. 14 000 was the limit, after
that not even journalists or festival workers were allowed to enter. So
apparently 500-2000 people actually never saw the show. 19.00 the place
was already crammed, and Blur wasn't on until 22.15! Some weird scenes
took place as hoursemounted police tried to force back the crowd.
Nevermind, i was in there and had a good time ;-D

Soundtrack were rocking fine, as usual, but due to the strong wind down
by the seaside, much of the sound blew away. I think one or two new
songs were played, both pretty good. Ebbot was wearing a black dress,
(langkjol) and with his long unkept beard he's looking more and more
like a tramp/drunkard/hobo...

I was backstage, taking pictures at the front. But when I wanted to
leave for the audience section, the guards told me off "If you're
leaving, you're not coming back in, cause we've blocked all the
entrances!" Shit, so i couldn't go anywhere, my mates were waiting
by the subway, the organisation of the whole event sucked.

So i had to spend the whole night backstage, pestering the stars for
autographs :-P OK, a lot of "stars" were there, so I was kept busy.
Fredrik and Arvid from Popsicle, Stakka Bo, an old fart from Stars
on Mars, all the Soundtrack-guys, Marcus manager from Bob Hund,
journos all over, even Owe Tornquist showed up in a smoking! And
Nina from Cardigans came out after the gig, boy has she got star
quality. Gee, she's the kind of girl that makes you mumble and say
incomprehensible things, somehow you get your record signed, and
then you stumble away all red in the face. Wow!

Still, I'm not a big fan of Cardigans music, not enough power and
stamina, too much elevator... OK, i know you will protest, but I'm just
not into it. I guess they played all their hits: Lovefool, Ironman,
Rise and Shine, umm, that's the ones i know the titles of.

Over to Blur. I have been really disappointed with Blur the last few
years, ever since that gig at Hultsfred 94 (?). I didn't go to
Palladium 95, and the one at Solnahallen this spring was mediocre. Once
upon a time their madness was genuine (saw gigs in 92-93; Glastonbury,
Lidingo, Gino) but they fell into the gap of the big bad music
industry, they haven't delivered.

So the first appearance of Damon last night, he looked like that
bored/stoned zombie/worn-out popstar that I've learned to know, not
giving a shit for the audience. Cause he knows: thousands of teenage
girls will still die to f**k him and buy every record they release, no
matter what.

OK, after a while the show improved, and I must confess i enjoyed some
of the new stuff: Death of a Party, stark moody song, Beetlebum, a few
more. Though a lot was shit as well: Chinese Bombs, noisy crap - NOT
grunge, just stupid popstar attitude, too bored to make proper songs.
And all of the Great Escape was forgettable as well: irritating tunes
like Country House, Stereotypes, songs that you only can enjoy if your
drunk.

Towards the end, they digged up some old gold: Coping, Advert, For
Tomorrow. You can't take away that those are good songs, but I've heard
them in far better versions when they were fresh. Final encore was Song
2, which was performed with a total lack of rhythm and enthusiasm.
Too bad, I used to love this band.

Hey, it's like everybody fell off the face of the earth!
Spooky, aint it???

Nevertheless, I went to see Stefan Sundstrom yesterday at Tanto. I'm
not writing a review unless anyone asks for it.

I'm wasting bandwidth here...

Well, I ask for it then. I was not able to see him when he played in
Vastervik earlier this summer. I remember he did a good gig at the
Hultsfred Festival a couple of years ago. He told everyone to sit down on
the ground during the concert. Of course everyone was standing up again
just a few minutes later. Except for me, then, my feet ached pretty badly
(for some strange reason they always do after a festival).

I guess all swedes already know about this, so this is for Brainpool-fans
outside Sweden (are there any or am I wasting time?).

Janne Kask has left Brainpool. He confirmed this in the TV-program "Z-TV pa
vag" a couple of days ago. The others, in the band, have discussed
continuing without him but the future, both for them and for him, is
uncertain at the moment. According to Kask it was a mutual agreement, no
internal wars in the band. He just didn't think it was fun any longer.
