OK folks, here's the situation.
35 minutes of the Finnish CD are still completely playable on my system.
Maybe someone else's machine would do a better job at reading the disc, but
I have never encountered a disc that was so hard to read as problem areas
on this one.
Still, I think (and I've gotten a number of messages agreeing), that it
should continue down the chain as is. And unless Kimmo speaks up and says
he wants to do a tape replacement for the disc, then I think I'll send it
off when I go to work on Monday (heavy storms expected this weekend, so
don't count on me braving the Berkeley post office tomorrow).
Perhaps the unplayable tracks can go on a future Finnish compilation?
Anyone who wants to be added to the chain should preferably get their
snail-mail address to me by midnight Greenwich time on Sunday (between
Sunday and Monday). Likewise, if anybody is no longer interested in being
on the chain, if you write me in time, I'll delete your name from the list.
There are currently another 28 people on the original list, plus a couple
of people who need to be signed up. From me, the tape makes a bunch of
other stops in the US, one stop in the UK, spends a long long time in
Sweden, then there are a bunch of short stops in Finland, Estonia, Latvia,
Italy and Greece. It's going to take a while for the disc to make the
rounds.
Dare I suggest that I might insert the addresses of new sign-ups into
places on the middle of the list so that the disc will do less
border-crossing, and thereby keep things moving as quickly as possible?
Kimmo, if you think I should mess with this one, could you forward me the
mailing list off your computer so that it will be easier for me to edit and
reprint the mailing list?
Hmm, anything I forgot? Isabella, I'll need your snail mail address to add
you to the list. Of course I've already got yours, Jed.

What a discussion......
Since you have been talking about some of the most well known journalists
in the rock and pop area I can add some facts.
I miss them all.....every year at the MIDEM in Cannes.
Why do I miss them ?
- Because its one of the most important fairs for the music industry with
over 10000 persons from record labels, music publishers, managements,
festivals etc get together to do business, find new contacts etc
There are also about 100 concerts and showcases during a week
( I will write a report in the Scandinavian Indie soon - and you can find
information about MIDM at website: www.midemcannes.com)
This was my fourth year at this fair. Except working for my own company
Rockfile with a release for the Euro Pop Book (website:www.rockfile.se)
I have together with Mats Olsson done some work for different media
( Radio Europa, Backstage..1994.95,96 ) and Topp 40, P4 and the Norwegian
music magazin Faro Journalen this year.
Other Swedish journalists at the fair were Claes Olsson, Topp 40, Margita
Ljusberg, STIM-nytt, Germund Stenhag, Anna Jakten from Swedish Broadcasting
P3 - Musikjournalen.
But none of the really well known journalists show up. I find this strange.
Say if... the big papers and motormagazins didn't send anyone to the big
motorfairs when there are releases for new cars ? That would be quite weird,
wouldn't it ?
Maybe their editors think the fair only would be interesting to
professionals and not to the common reader......

Swedish and Faro Journalen for the Norwegians. The radioprograms ...I dont
know and of course Scaninavian Indie.

The song on the Independent Top 20 compilation is "Secondhand Clothes"
produced by Moonshake and Guy Fixsen, and the sleeve (I should have checked
it before I asked I notice now, sorry about that) says: "Hailing from various
corners of Hackney, Moonshake have quickly established themselves as one of
the most innovative bands around. This, the bands second single, captures
perfectly their experimentation with hip-hop beats and dub bass sounds and
like its predecessor found its way into the upper reaches of the independent
charts. Moonshake are a four piece consisting of Margaret Fielder on vocals
and guitar, Dave Callahan vocals and guitar, John Frenelt on bass and Mig on
drums. They will be releasing their debut LP on Too Pure in October 1992."
It would definitely be interesting to hear their latest album (released
1996 if I understand both of you right?). Any chance someone on the list
knows the name of the label they released it on?

As the song "Secondhand Clothes" is filled with electric guitars, I guess
they must have moved away from that pretty quickly if the debut album,
released only a couple of months later, was guitar free?

Heh, well the thing I based my comparison on was the annoying male vocals
in this song, for which I couldn't find a better comparison than just the
Sultans Of Ping. The dreamy female vocals in the middle of the song is
on the other hand nowhere near annoying.

You're right! I couldn't find a good way of describing his voice other
than the Sultans-thing, but I'm with you on the Nick Cave "reference"
here. "An annoying Nick Cave" is far better than "somewhat similar to
Sultans".

Heh heh, yeah you're welcome, though I can only bring one "guest" with
me to Herrgar'n (as Micke explained earlier). But if Micke goes, he can
also bring one, and then I'm sure I can always talk friends into taking
people as well. Let me know soon though. Or you can also see them in
Angelholm on February 5th if you want.

It definitely looks like a great place there! A question though - I
received a snail mail letter from Fly about a week ago where they
wrote that they would play in Lund on _February_ 7th - do you know
if they play in Lund on both February _and_ March 7th, or if the
February 7th date has been moved to March 7th?
And how was Speaker live? They play here in Linkoping pretty soon. Is
it worth to go?

Hi there!
Did anyone else see Hellacopters and Gluecifer at Studion last friday?
Gluecifer kicked ass! They're a pretty new Norwegian punkrock band and are
gonna have a new album out soon recorded in Sunlight Studio. They've had a
12" out on Norwegian label Hit Me! called "Dick disguised pussy". One of the
best punk records of 1996 in my opinion. Guecifer are also featured in the
next issue of Savage Magazine, out in March.

I have listened to the finnish indie tape (lots of them around now, this is
the oldest one of those that are circulating) and, since Kimmo wanted it,
here are some short comments:
I cannot say that I am very familiar with finnish indie. On this tape there
were only four bands/artists I have heard before: Larry & The Lefthanded,
Jimi Tenor, Pistepirkko and Poverty Stinks.
IMO it was a nice tape, in that I could not find any songs that fell below
the "OK-level". On the other hand I also had a hard time finding something
well above that level. Some bands, I thought, were closer to "good" than to
"OK", for example Poverty Stinks, The Pansies, Aknestik and Coo. And I also
found three new favourite bands (if their tunes on the tape are
representative for them, that is): Laika & The Cosmonauts, Fridge and Dada
Girl.
The rest was, as I said, OK but it felt a bit anonymous. As if I had heard
it before, in other versions with other bands. Not as crazy as I would have
thought finnish indie-bands should sound. But then - this might be because
I was very tired when I listened to the tape (I have checked in my law
book, but I could not find any law against morons repairing a bicycle
outside my window at 2.30 in the morning). But this was my first
impression, at least.
BTW, should it be impossible to have a norwegian or danish tape put
together? I don't know about the indie scene in Denmark (maybe I have
already got the hole collection of danish indie: the Ludo X-album) but I
know that there should be enough bands in Norway (even in the city of
Tromso alone!) to make a collection. Anyone?

instro-band around. What do they sound like? Is it surf or...?

Hey, i want some comments on the tape i made too. erik should get the tape
tomorrow or someday near tomorrow, so drop a line after you've listened to
it a few times.... i'm allready mad about making it only a 60 min. tape. i
should have put atleast some Isebel's Pain, Monotonics and Weepikes on it.
well, life must go on....
And there's no point about discussing about things like what's lo-fi,
alternative, indie etc. these have become too subjective in their meaning
for anybody to have a reasonable discussion about them in the confinements
(sp?)of a mailing list.... but just to make things easier i try to spread
the understanding that indie means a record that has been made on an
independent record label. it doesn't necessarely tell anything about the
style of music. finlands biggest selling rock'n roll band Eppu Normaali is
on an independent label. at the same time Boredoms is on warner! alternative
means music that is listened by a small minority. how big this minority is,
is ofcourse another question. but nobody makes alternative music that is
bought by the big crowd, or whatever it was that the soundgarden singer
said.... if the band is in the top40, or whatever the list you have is
called, it's not alternative. it's mainstream.
And remember there's nothing wrong with listening to mainstream music. just
don't say that it's something it isn't.

I have absolutely no idea, but it's definitely possible that they play on
both dates since you have to be a student (at the university) to get in at
Blekingska nationen.

Some of my friends had a big party that night (Friday) so unfortunately I
couldn't go. But I thought they were great live when they were Green, so I
suppose I would have liked it now as well. On the other hand, according to
a review of the gig in Sydsvenskan (south-swedish newspaper) it wasn't
that great. If you like their album and/or liked Green I'd suggest you go!

I'm not sure I agree. To me, if something is supposed to be called
alternative it is because of the way it _sounds_ and not because of how many
copies that are sold.

Remember that just because promotional copies of a single have been
released to radio, etc, it doesn't necessarily mean that the single is
commercially available. In most cases the promos are released some time
before the actual single, at least among the big bands/record companies.

Yes, it would. But - music and cars are two VERY different things. Are
they really comparable? I wouldn't say so. And even if they release a lot
of new, interesting records at a music fair (which I doubt, but I could
be wrong) I can't see why music journalists should bother to travel down
to Cannes to listen to them when they probably will get them by mail just
a couple of days later. Cars, on the other hand, is a bit tricky to fit
in an envelope.

Yeah, but are they really worth attending? Aren't the majority of those
concerts with bands that's got brilliant technique but play (IMAALOOPHO)
boring, AOR-ish kind of music? Or am I just being prejudiced?

You're right about that it is strange, though I have a feeling they don't
show up because they don't really know what's going on there. I haven't
seen one small note about the whole thing in any of the evening papers
(though I don't read them every day, so I might have missed it?) - and
how about the music magazines and morning papers? I rarely read the
morning papers, but I haven't seen anything about this in them, when
I have read them either.
And then again, perhaps it is because it wouldn't feel right for them,
to be there with all the professionals.. :-)

Andy Bell - (ex-Ride) is living in Sweden nowadays. Yes, it is true. Our
hero actually lives in a town called Vaggeryd in Smaland
together with his wife Idah. When will the first fans appear on
their doorstep, the stars seem to ask...

Blank tapes - The music business (those who represent the artists) have now
gone public with the intention to raise the prices on blank
audio tapes in Sweden, previously only whispered about among
the guilty ones. If the proposition in agreed upon by the
government (and of course it will be, because it always means
more money to them - because the VAT will be higher due to the
higher price) a blank C-60 tape will be about $1.00 more
expensive, a C-90 even more, and C-100 the most more expensive

Carpe Wade - (AWSF) managed to steal some time from Posies' Ken Stringfellow
during his Backfish-producing Skelleftea-visit in December
last year. He appears as guest producer of their upcoming album
and also as choir singer (!). The new album will be released in
March, but before that, a new single called "Never".

Cloudberry Jam - (NONS) shocks the world with yet another music video!
The new video was made for the song "Going Further" and
the band gave the tape an "ok" on thursday last week.
This means that you can expect to see the video in the
very near future. Apparently, the story in the video
shows the band on a nightmare tour, by bus, where nothing

Dorian Records - changes the plans for the compilation CD series once again.
Starting with the next compilation (due out in March), which
will be a double CD, the label goes into Volume mode. This
series will not be called Volume, but "Popscene" instead
of course. Four compilation CDs / year will be released,
Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. And yes, you will be able
to subscribe to the series too. The March compilation will
boast 40 cool indie bands, 30 are ready today. More info

Fidget - (Mega) and PJ Widestrand were ready with the re-mixing of their
debut album late last week, ten days after they started. The result
and difference to what it sounded like before is, according to the
band, pretty amazing. Their first single "Semi-Naked" has stayed on
Swedish national radio channel P3's playlist for over a month now,
and the video for the song with the same name managed to stay on
Swedish national TV channel 1's Video Top List show "Voxpop" for
yet another week, when it entered the chart at number three last
week. Next up is their second single called "Stop Losing", planned
to be released at the end of February, and in the middle of March,
you can expect to find their debut album in the stores.

Petrol - (Superstudio Bla) 's debut album has been moved about a week and
is now planned for release on February 9th. The band is also ready
ready to play live, and a tour together with This Perfect Day might
just happen, though this is not completely decided yet. If the tour
plans are not realized, the band will at least appear on a couple
of TV shows. New member in the band on bass is apparently guitar-
player Henrik Lokind from Sindy Kills Me. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
The Pusjkins - (L-Style) played at venue Herrgar'n in Linkoping last thursday
but held the release party for their debut album "Avoiding

night after. Free drinks and a performance by the band "Theu
Nooners", also signed to L-Style, awaited the guests. The
album received 3 (out of 5) in last week's evening paper
Aftonbladet's friday edition "Puls". In case you missed all
of this, the band appears at record store Get Back Records
in Linkoping on Monday January 27th at 18:00 for an in-store

Speaker - (Stockholm) made an unscheduled appearance at club "Svarta Tjuren"
in Linkoping last thursday. Apparently the band was on the way to
a gig in Lund, and decided to stay in Linkoping over night. While
visiting the club, the band played two songs, though not live, only

Strawberry Songs - it seems like the news about the upcoming compilation
"e-pop.vol 2" on the Eskilstuna Record label reported in
the last Selected News was somewhat wrong, so here is the
correct information: Bands included on the compilation
are: Panic, St. Moores, Coaster and Carve. The compilation
was spread at MIDEM in Cannes and distributed to radio
stations/media last week. The release party for the
compilation will be held in Eskilstuna at the venue "Bla"
on February 8th, where all four bands will perform. For

me take this time to recommend a closer look/listen to
the band Panic - they sure know how to write a hit!

It would be nice if you could tell us, mere mortals, why you thing the
single sucks. That would make this list a lot more interesting.
Anyway, I went to the Superswirls gig at Studion last Thursday and even
though the majority of the audience stayed at the bar during most of the
concert it was pretty OK. Superswirls has some really good songs (Tune in
your Superswirls, Dates e.t.c.) and they made the evening worthwhile. So,
with a little more enthusiastic audience, Superswirls can turn out to a
really good live act. I really recommend their album, Filter.

It's not the first album, but the first after Margaret left ("The Sound Your
Eyes Can Follow"), that supposedly has no guitars on it. "Secondhand Clothes"
was their first release on Too Pure, and also the first release with Calaghan
singing. (And yes, I do find his vocals really annoying too, that's probably
the main reason why I've listened about ten times more to the Laika album
than to "The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow".)

I'd love to see them, but I think going down to Link|ping and back on a
thursday night will be a bit too much of a hassle. If it would have been
on a weekend it would have been a completely different story. Thanks for
offering to try to get us in, though.
Another reason for going down to Link|ping to see Archers Of Loaf would of
course be the ticket prices... I really cannot understand why it has to be
so f**king expensive to go to concerts in Stockholm! Bands that play in
Stockholm and in Malm| or Lund usually cost 2-3 times as much in Stockholm.
And now we get the opportunity to pay 130:- for seeing a band that cost
30:- in Link|ping. Hilarious. (Though I'm not laughing...)

Following Erik's trend, I'll use this list to see if anyone can provide
me with some info on two bands that are playing Stockholm in a few weeks,
namely Chavez and Railroad Jerk.
I have only hared one song by Chavez, and nothing by Railroad Jerk, but
since they both happen to be labelmates (Matador) with some of my favourite
bands (Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Liz Phair, Guided By Voices etc) I wouldn't
be surprised if not going there would mean missing two great gigs.
So, any attempts on describing these bands' sound and appeal as live acts
would be extremely appreciated.

I wish I had some friends with decent taste when it comes to music,
if I drive down to Umeå alone, it'd cost me like 600:- just in gas
money :-( Anyone from Luleå on the list who'd like to "samaka" (car pool)?
Well, I'm probably alone on the list from Lulea so I guess not.
Oh well, at least i got to see the Grifters on new year's eve when i
was in memphis.

imho chavez sounds like jawbox (intense, hard-edged, guitar-based rock.
think touch & go and dischord) but nowhere near as good. actually the
guy doing the vocals sounds a lot like gbv's robert pollard and i am
pretty sure gbv and chavez used to tour together. should be able to put on
a good live-show though.
railroad jerk i would compare to the jon spencer blues explosion and beck.
but i am not a big fan so someone else might want to take a shot at that
one.
