oh yes!!!
the push king are a great band, and the've got a single out on the
swedish slowball records so i guess that justifies this mail.
and the album is out, and it's an awsome one at that. full of
charming, soulful and at times very rocking popsongs. threepart
harmonies galore and so many cool instruments that eggstone is almost
put to shame. especially the northern soulish stomper "gina g"
totally rules the turntable.
it's out on sealed fate, who also put out their second single "macy,
macy", and i know juan at freak scene had the album last week, though
he was a bit bummed that he only recieved 5 copies so they sold out
pretty quick. he's got another load coming in on febuary tenth though.
rattle his shop door then and you won't be dissapointed (since he's
also getting the new softies release "winter pagant").
take care / toby

Interesting thing found on the UK Indie mailing list about a band called
Mogwai, who supposedly sounds something like a nice MBV-style instrumental
thing. Anyone heard them?
Anyway, Scan-content: apparently they're going to tour in Norway in March
(Stavanger, Bergen and Olso), so they might come over to Sweden while they're
there as well, and that's why I'm looking for more info (ie. what those
of you who have heard them think?).

There is a Norwegian Indie tape being compiled right now, as compiler
Julie Forchhammer has stated a couple of times earlier on the list.
When the tape is ready, I'll be sure to let everyone know, as she has
no longer access to the net.
When it comes to a Danish indie tape - I'm currently talking to the
Danish version of Swedish national radio program "Musikjournalen Pop"
and "Rock" (sort of) called "Rockland" (but changes name to "Beat"
soon) about the possibility of such a tape. When I know more, I'll
post the info.

Hey hey hey,
got the tape on tuesday, and have passed it on to Micke. I've only listened
to it twice so far, so here are some short thoughts:
1. Yes, you're definitely right about the "cirkus music" reference
when it comes to Aavikko... :-)
2. The Thee Ultra Bimboos songs listed on the cover are in the wrong order,
the first one on the tape is "Who Stole My Underwear" and the second
is "Hypnotized" - though I'm sure all of you will notice that as well.
3. Loved at once: Deep Turtle, Circle, 22-Pistepirkko and Jimi Tenor.
4. Question: Did Circle release two albums during 1996? Both "Hissi"
and "Zopalki" were listed as albums released 1996 on the cover
and I know Zopalki was released 1996, but what about Hissi?

Yeah, cause I wanna know more about 'em. Maybe they can be interviewed for a
future issue of Savage. So are they kind of a "Jungle Exotica" instro band?
The above description sounds pretty original and not your standard format
surf-group doing covers of "Misirlou" and "Bombora" and "the Wedge" in
various versions.

Unfortunately they didn't make it to the top. Beaten by Offspring, Suede

Well I don not know if there is a all swedish Placebo, but I guess the
Placebo you saw on MTV actually have some swedish parts in it. Stefan Olsdal
(the bass player) is swedish, but Brian Molko (the singer )is american
and the drummer (Robert soemthing I can't remember) is Swiss well A lot of
sources will tell you different.. don't trust them ;-) ... Well I guess I
could be wrong too ;-) , but the band is London based... last year at
Eurospotting (formerly known as EBU Rock Festival) they actually represented
England as I far as I remember...
One of my friends interviewed Brian Molko at Roskilde (and lost the tape
afterwards) though I was a very short interview as after a few minutes
Slayer entered the Canopy Stage so they couldn't hear eachother :( ...
blablabla a lot of non usefull information... I'd better stop
How come that everytime I add my 0.02$ cent's I have this feeling it's
not scan-indie related :( Well maybe I should buy myself a TV and start
watching MTV to hear some swedish music ;-) )

I am a bit out of phase when it comes to all these tapes that are
circulating right now. Here are some updates:
I have copied the Finnhits tape and will send it to Isabella in Lulea
tomorrow. I wait with the comments until I have listened to it more
carefully. Instead, I have some comments about the Icy Icy tape:
My comments are: It was really long since I had so much fun just from
listening to music. If this tape is representative for the people that live
on Iceland - boy, do we have some weirdos there :-). Maybe not the highest
musical quality, but that was offset by the originality. In fact, the only
band I did not really like was Ornamental (maybe they are not a bad band
when listening to them alone, but they sounded a bit too ordinary to be in
this collection). I did not understand so many words of the Texas Jesus
texts, but I had a great many laughs while listening to them. And it seems
as if everything Bjork has ever touched has turned into gold, either in
terms of money or (as was the case on this tape) in quality. Really liked
Unun, too. I guess it can be a good idea to make an excursion into the
icelandic world of music.

I have a strong feeling that the tape is in the hands of some mail office
or mail carrier right now. It should be on its way to Julian Minervini in
the USA. This means that Julian is the one who can add you to the list,
when he receives the tape, if there are no objections.

Placebo is a British band and has been a major hype for quite some time in
the British music press. Androgyne post-grunge guitar rock. Will be huge
for a while but are quite boring. Buy Bally Sagoo, Dr Dre's The Aftermath
or Daft Punk for more interesting listening at the moment! Forget Placebo.

Subject: Non-Scan: eggstone Review
"One thing is for sure,
I'm not happy anymore" (Birds in Cages)
This is moody album. A thread of discontent runs throughout the album.
And perhaps for that reason in particular, eggstone's lyrics have suddenly
become much more coherent and consistent than they ever were before. Not
that I didn't like their lyrics before, they were always clever and
humorous. But they always veered toward nonsense.
Now they are managing to make light fare of being miserable, or of wanting
to be miserable:
"I hope a dog will bite me,
not so I will die,
just to make me cry"
"I hope I burn my skin
while sleeping in the sun
wouldn't that be fun?" (Birds in Cages)
The best moments for me come in "Il Trascurato" (would that be "the
careless" or "the neglected" - anyone know Italian here?) and "April and
May". The first features a gentle drum machine to transport us back to our
school days, plus a jaunty little melody that makes me think of the
Mediteranean (anyone agree?). The lyrics, of course, are from the
viewpoint bullied child praying that the summer won't end, that he won't
have to go back to school and face his tormentors, and that the former
friend who leads the pack will die. (Hey, this could be a topic for
bedroom pop). It's a bitter narrative, not the sort of thing that I would
have expected from the band, but hearing how strong and (gooseflesh)
meaningful the lyrics can be here will surely make it harder for me to go
back to the nonsense that they used to do (and which I loved so much).
Earlier reviews of the album have made a good deal of "April and May" being
"the best Cardigans song ever". And I'll agree with that, but again, not
just for the sweet sounding music, but also for the lyrics which manage to
sound sweet and yet aren't exactly. The song is about a lightweight love
affair, and the opening is just about as romantically sweet as can be
imagined. Take this excerpt from the first verse (circa April or May):
"We're only surfing,
and the waves that we miss
give us time to kiss.
(Of course the wind is in charge of this.)
Around July, Per starts to wonder why he is feeling fine, and the affair
proceeds to fall apart, but not in any dramatic way, but simply:
"When our daydreams alter
into tepid water -
End of November,
I forgot your birthday but you didn't care,
and that's the end of this affair."
The band scores in my book for treating such an affair as though it were
nothing, or in my personal interpretation, as though it was worth no more
than some throwaway romantic lyric in a pop song. Commentary?
So much for everyone who expected the band to keep rocking harder and
harder (which they do do on the opening track - I guess you can't sing
about so much negativity and never give yourself a chance to let off some
steam) which is what you might expect on the basis of the eggstone track on
1995's Tambourine Studios compilation (this track, "Still All Stands
Still", appears on the new album as well, which is just the sort of thing
to annoy me). Aside from those two tracks, what I actually hear is a much
stronger presence of acoustic guitar than before.
To sum up, I like this album much better album than Somersault. This album
gets back to the sugar-slick vibe-laden arrangements of In San Diego, but
the lyrics have gone moody. I've been finding quite a bit of the record so
good that I don't dare listen to it too late in the evening for fear that I
won't be able to fall asleep afterwards. Oh, and it's got nicer artwork
than Somersault had too, even if Per's mustache looks a little
intimidating.
Alexander
Non-eggstone P.S. I won't name names, but there are quite a few people on

a few people when I say that we like your mail, but many of us would prefer

I am looking for an audio copy of Bjork's performance at the 1994 Roskilde
festival in Denmark. I will do whatever it takes to get this recording! I
was at the fabulous show, and besides it sounding great it also has a lot
of sentimental value. if anyone knows of, or has a suggestion of where I
might be able to find this, please reply to me directly at this address:

thanks,

Subject: Icy Icy + Northern Lights
Hallo, I got the Icy Icy tape today. I'll send it off in the post in a day
or two. I already dubbed it, it sounds ace so far but I'll send more
complete comments once I have listened a few more times. Did someone want to
be added to this chain? If you please send me your address and I will add
it. Unless there is any objection to this from the people in change of the
tape chain. Let me know please. Maura Smule is next (and last) on the list.
I have had the time to listen to The Northern Lights Shine Bright Tonight a
few times now... The songs that I liked the most were by Super, Cassna,
Noitalinna Huraa!... I would like to hear more of this. Most of the tape I
thought was pretty good... not too special but I enjoyed it. The bands that
stick out are 22 Pistepirkko, Pansies, Supperheads, Swellheads, Aknestik,
Annel Nieddat, Laika + The Cosmonauts, Jimi Tenor, Bee Meeting. & Poverty
Stinks. Some more than others. I don't think it is proper to judge bands on
one song only though. Some thing that I strongly disliked were Good Evening
Manchester, Ultra Bimboos, and Circle... and I hated Fridge and Deep
Turtle...*shudder*. I don't want anyone to take offence, that is just my
taste in music. I tend to think that Side A is somewhat stronger but all in
all it is a very good mixertape and I am very glad to hear it. Especially
the better songs there. =)

Subject: Re: Alexander Bard
A couple of minutes ago I could see the table of contents in my
"in-mailbox" being blown to pieces by some extremely evil alien. This means
that I cannot send you a copy of the message, about Placebo, from Alexander
Bard. But I guess you remember it anyway.
I take it for granted that this is the same Alexander Bard who founded the
great band Army of Lovers (if I had known about a "smiley-type" sign for
"irony" I would have put one right after the word "great" above).
Mr Bard did not like Placebo. Well, the Alexander Bard I know about does
not listen to guitar-based music, he is simply not interested in
guitar-based music. So, I guess, to ask him about guitar-based music is
like asking a dentist how a brain surgery is done: he will probably have
some basic knowledge about it, but certainly not enough to be trusted. The
difference is that a dentist would admit that he does not have enough
knowledge to answer the question. But, I guess, since Mr Bard is such an
inbelievable personality he has to say things all the time just to show the
world that he really exists.
Mr Bard also said that if we want to hear some really interesting and
innovative music we should listen to, for example, Daft Punk. I must say
that this is a historical (but maybe not great) moment in my life - for the
first time ever I agree with Alexander Bard!
/Micke, realizing that he has done of fool of himself if this is not the
same A. Bard as he thought it was, but still thinking it was worth it

Thanks,

Ho-hum. Interesting? Yes, probably. Innovative? Usually, the words
"music" and "innovative" don't belong in the same sentence.

Subject: [PS] VERY COLLEGE SOCKROCK!
Hey! Hey! Hey!
About two minutes ago, i heard an interview with Graham, Alex and Damon on
Swedish National Radio. The program is called in Swedish "Musikkanalen" or
in english "The MusicChannel" ;) Ok, they played four songs from the
upcomming album. (I think? Bcuz i was jumping on the floor of happyness,
nirvana)
COLLAGE ROCK!
Ha! Ha! As Damon said in the interview, their sound were very "college rock".
Yes! Very LO-FI recorded/produced. Damon said they wanted to find and let
their rock beasts out. This is natural Blur. Noisy, Lo-fi and cracking the
states? Ha! Ha!
Graham said he have been scared to play lo-fi, noisy/trashy and so on ...
But now when hes sober (!) he feels he can do It and he like it this way.
He loves the noisy sound, its more him ... Nowdays ;)
But it was still very BLUR. One song had the sound of John Spencer Blues
Explosion. Rock!
TRIP HOP
They also played a "party" song that actually were Trip Hop. Just an organ
and a drum beat and Damons voice floating on the top. It sounded like ...
something i cant remember... Damn!
DINOSAUR JR
Some harmonies in some songs sounded like Dinosaur JR, maybe im wrong
(someone will hang me for this statement, ha!). But it sure was Pavement,
Sonic Youth and ... Hope the journalists will stop using the silly word
"BritPop". Wonder what they will call this? As they DO HAVE to put the
new Blur under a new name ... American Lo-Brit-Fi maybe? Eh?
SO GREAT
They played a song that Graham wrote and sings. The song were called "Youre
so great" and it was awsome ... VERY lo-fi ... I laughed my socks off bcuz
it really is night and day to the sound of "Country House". It was so fun.
I think many people will think: Is this really Blur? Nah.. It sounds shit,
doesnt it? And then a week after: Its really good, better than Mark Owen!
Isnt it? Maybe not. Celin Dion, YEAH ROCKS OFF!!!
BLUR FAKE (BIG MAC-WAY)
I wonder if some americans will think that Blur are fake, trying to sound
like their (the americans) own music (he! Country?).. Maybe good that Blur
are pals with Pavement. Maybe Blur will have some cred for that. I know this
sounds silly, but i bet someone over there will think like that. SILLY! Bcuz
BLUR is doing it GOOD, it did sound great. One song used the so called
Nirvana concepts... Eh? Nevermind. Blur are as they said honest in what they
do now.
I WAS SURPRISED
I cant review the songs that good, bcuz they only played some minutes from
them. I was so chocked bcuz somehow i thought this record "BLUR" were going
to sound like/closer to "Modern Life Is Rubbish". But i think it was very
far from that sound. Very far. Cant compare. Or can you? Hmn ...
BAD ENGLISH
Hmn ... Sorry for my bad english and i think all of you allready heard these
songs, so maybe this email will be sort to the unNecessary SHITEmails, Ha!
Ha! (I did read this through before i pressed the send buttom and i did delete
alot of crap text, belive me).
RELEASED
The album "Blur" will be released on monday here in Sweden. They will have a
tour stop here in Mars. Too bad it will be in a big arena. Best Blur concert
ive been on where at a club that only took 500, maybe 800 persons ;) It was
the "Modern Life is Rubbish" Tour. Very Sex Pistols feeling/sound live.
Great!! I do love that album.
//Daniel
Ps. I hope this email will be easy to read. Not alot of text in a row,
using small and big caps in every textline, ;D

Subject: Icy Icy Ace!
Hallo,
I have listened to the Icy Icy Muzik tape quite a few times now, and I must
say I think it is fabulous. I listened to it all day today at work... It is
the best mixertape I ever heard (that I did not make for myself). Especially
considering it is all new to me. My absolute favourite on the tape is Unun,
I think that all of their songs are brilliant and catchy. I have been
singing them to myself all day. I am convinced enough to begin a proper
search for records. =) I also really loved the Texas Jesus
& Heida collaboration 'Picking Flowers', simple but unforgettable.
I was a little worried about Texas Jesús because of their 'frightening' name
but they are really special. It reminds me of rogue Blur b-sides gone
completely more mad. It does not sound that way but that seems to pop in my
head for some odd reason. I definitely like it, very fun. There is nothing I
dislike on this mixer actually, it's just that I really love several of the
tunes. It's all very ecclectic, Gorky's + pop sensibility or something...
Labels suck though. :p
The papers that are with the tape are very informative. It is really fab to
know some of the background that I did not know. I made myself a dub a few
days ago so I am waiting to send the package off to the next subsciber. I
think someone wanted to be added to the chain so I will wait 2 more days for
that address. There is only one more person on the list after me now anyway.
Ok, so let me know.
Thanks again for the brilliant tape.

Hallo again.
Martin wrote me with his address so I'll pack up Icy Icy and send it off
today or tomorrow to Maura Smale in NYC with the additions. 2 other people
asked to be included so I will add them too unless there is an objection...
No-one said anything so far so I guess it is fine. =)

Tonight's options were:
1. Fidget at Blekingska (Lund)
2. Ash at KB (Malmo)
"Fortunately" I didn't have to choose as I have a killer exam in
microeconomic analysis tomorrow morning... :/
Anyway, if somebody visited any of the two above mentioned gigs, please
post a review (and please tell me they sucked ;)!
In case you wanna know, I would have chosen the KB-gig.
Martin, who has missed two Ash shows in less than a year... :(
