Just wanted to inform you that
The compilation of artists on Spanish labels Siesta and Elefant
reached me yesterday in very good condition. I haven't listened to it
properly yet but it certainly sounds promising.
I'll try to dub it and send on to Roberts Galvans by monday or tuesday.
I'll post a review too then.

Well, here's the news:
1. The mailing list works.
2. Verve is back together again - and it brings happy tears to my eyes.
(has anyone noticed that Richard almost laughs one time when he is
repeating the line 'Another drink and I won't miss her' in
"So It Goes" on the gorgeous A Northern Soul album? - just wondering,
I think it's pretty neat..)
3. My vcr is eating up MTV Europe's Alternative Nation Icelandic special
with loads of Gus Gus (both videos, live performances, interview),
Bellatrix, UnUn (they did spell it like that, right?) etc...
1 + 2 + 3 = Everything is just fine
Please note that it will take another week before the Web-pages are
back online and working again, but the mailing list and my e-mail works
okay from now on.

REVIEW: Drain S.T.H., _Horror Wrestling_ (Enclave)

Picture a Swedish band and what comes to mind? Roxette?
Ace of Base?
These pop music bands are popular in Sweden and with MTV
and its crowd of music watchers. Drain S.T.H. is a woman's
quartet from Stockholm, but you won't see them singing
pseudo-dramas on the box. Drain is a heavy metal band influenced
more by Black Sabbath than Abba. Along with most hard rockers,
their music and videos aren't getting airplay. In this alternative
and rap-controlled state, those that rock hard depend on the clubs
and music sales for their audiences.
_Horror Wrestling_ - the title refers to wrestling with
problems and horrors of life. Twelve tracks of dark lyrics
underscored by throbbing bass and crashing riffs make up this first
full length Drain album. Lead vocalist Maria Sjoholm and drummer
Martina Axen come up with these raw lyrics out of who knows what
experiences. Guitarist Falvia Canel blasts the occasional speed
metal riff and bassist Anna Kjellberg makes the bass pound.
_Horror Wrestling_ is for metal and hard rock lovers only with its
harmonies that remind one of Alice in Chains and the distant sounds of
Sabbath. Current band favorites are Sepultura and Pantera, and their
current Type O Negative tour cements their position as pounding
rockers - not Swedish cotton candy pop.
The band came together in 1993, but Axen and Canal have been
working together for twelve years. They were quickly signed by MVG
in 1994 and put out an EP and _Horror Wrestling_ in Europe. _Horror
Wrestling_ is now available in the States, and if you live for the
sharp edge of metal, get a copy.

Hi all,
The latest issue of Q (the biggest UK music mag) has reviews of albums by
four of this list's bands!
Day Behaviour get ** (average) for Adored. It's described as 'warmed-over
St Etienne-meets-Dubstar... [without] those bands' swinging 60s soundtrack
atmospherics and gossamer grooviness, mostly end[ing] up with insipid
electro-pop lite.' So not wholly favourable: they think 'Hello' is the only
decent song on it.
The Genius of Komeda also gets **. 'If the tunes were more dynamic, the
singing of Lena Karlsson more than a monotone, and their studied, lo-fi
sophistication more convincing, they might pull it off. Unfortunately...
tongues are stuck so firmly in cheeks that it hurts.'
Panasonic get another ** for their Kulma album. 'Minimalist analogue
flatulence... Kulma replaces good old musical values with what sounds like
sonic theory, Kraftwerk gasping for one - just one - sweet melody. Not
quite fast or annoying enough to be classified 'nosebleed', for all of
Panasonic's technicald aring, they ooccasionally induce a slight ear
infection.'
By contrast, Jimi Tenor's Intervision, his first album on Warp (home of
Aphex Twin etc) gets **** (excellent). 'Mixes 70s funk, analogue-era synth
pop and jazz into strange, lo-fi styles. He's immediately installed himself
as a techie cabaret artist who coils cigarette smoke around his machine pop
rather than dry ice. This album extende beyond the songwriting format...
Joe Meek would have been proud of Tenor's take on the standard "Caravan"...
the jazz fade-out of "Atlantis" is a suitably boggle-eyed, alien finale to
a pop record.'

This should be Oblivians... which is an incredibly sleazy garage
rock band from the States. They also play at Tantogarden in Stockholm,
and I'm sure the guy from Savage knows more about it.

We've booked them at 1000fryd the 26th, and I've heard a few songs -
sounds really cool. No bass, only two guitars, vox and drums. They got
rave reviews in Moshable, should be a treat for garage rock fans. Both
bands are on Crypt.

With a sound bearing some similarities to the Oblivians but, if possible,

It's high time I wrote something about the compilation of bands on Spanish
label Elefant and Siesta. I think I'll just list my favourites and an
overall opinion.
The best in my mind were "Minema"(Spain). What made them my faves were
probably ingenious synthesizer bits. Their 2nd song "Loveless" got the
highest rating of all. Nice pop thing although the songs didn't sound
absolutely 'right' to me. Maybe they lacked some kind of structural
originality.
Second favourites were They Go Boom! from UK. Another popband with good
prospects in the future I think. Their songs had that very essence of pop
which is sometimes really hard to find. But here I'd also like to state
that it would be nicer if they had more character and courage to
experiment. A good job, though.
The third were "Club 8" which reached their position thanks to quite
good guitar playing and that quiet swedepop feel. I personaly think that
Cinnamon is better in doing that than they, but nevertheless it was okay.
The other bands were of a bit lower level. What struck me too often was
monotony and a sense of boredom when listening to the rest of the
compilation. What I mean is that easylistening must be something more than
just that. There has to be some kind of 'vibe' or 'groove' that gets you
going. To me it's the most important aspect in popmusic.
I sent the compilation to Roberts Galvans in Latvia a week ago. Roberts-
have you received it??
Respect to Kimmo for his nice work and commitment.

Subject: The living mail-office is back
I have copied Trevors "Juicy Fruit"-compilation and it is now on its way to
Christoforos Kakkos in Athens, Greece (very nice country, indeed :-)). I
haven't had time to listen to all of it yet. When I tried to listen to it,
this weekend, I was interrupted by someone who wanted me to throw frisbee
with him (yes - it is true, yes - our neighbours thought we were crazy, yes
- I caught a cold).
So far, though, I haven't heard anything that sounded really exciting, just
some rather good contrubutions from Pancy Division and Juliana Luecking.
And to Olof Akeson I have to say that I found the Oblivians contribution on
the tape about as non-exciting as I guess he would find my favourite bands
;-).
But - as I said - I haven't had time to listen to the tape enough to make a
fair review of it. I will be back later with that.

Soundtrack is indeed the kind of intimate gossamer ticket to guide us
all through our days and ease us towards dreams at night. Dipping
into "Soundtrack" is like emerging from a cold, blustery day into a
house where you sit by the fireplace with a steaming mug of cafe au
lait in your hands. Your CD player never had it so good! Thirteen
songs of lilting pop brilliance wrapped up in horns, flutes, handclaps
and sealed with a kiss from Stockholm.
RSB is a fabulous group of scintillating kids delivering short (to
leave the listener wanting more) guitar or synth-melody pieces chock
full of hooks and catchy bridges. Ooh, don't forget some of the

a bike or even one's choice in food with refreshing clarity and with

This is a band which has consistently met and even surpassed my
expectations for the past 4 years. Shimmering girl/shy boy vocals,
guitars that glisten & jangle, cool infectious bass lines, and
orchestration that puts you into a swoon! How can you not get swept

Well, I can't help you with the first question, but try to send an e-mail
to Matti (alkberg@communique.se), he never checks it, though. The new
single, "Before The Trenches" sounds, according to my brother, as "tigher,
more poppy (no country rock!), richer guitar sound, but not so introvert."
The single features 5 songs and just one is a vacuum cleaner song.

A very good idea, and even though I am not on this tape chain,
I have heard a bunch of songs with the bands included (thanks to

Welcome to the club! :-) Minema is one of my Spanish favourites as well
(after Silvania - yes yes, I know they are from Peru, but they live in
Spain!), and I know a lot of others' too. They were interestingly enough
included on the latest Harry Lime compilation CD called "A Twist Of Lime"
here in Sweden, and if I haven't said it before (I know I have.. :-))
that compilation is worth every penny, cent, |re or whatever, if not for
The Wellmeant alone, then for Minema. Well, enough about that - what
I like the most about Minema is their mix of male/female vocals, the
occasional synth/organ. My favourite Minema song (so far) is
"Plastic Glam" - I don't know if you included that one on the tape
or not Kimmo? It's a gem.

Totally agreeing with you about that. I don't know what/which song(s)
Kimmo included on the tape, but I suspect that it might have been
"This Gift" and/or "Candy", right? I actually think that's the only
two songs I have with They Go Boom!! but somehow I have the feeling
there's a tape here somewhere with a couple of others.. well, anyway,
I love the dreamy and light male vocals, which kind of reminds me
of the UK pop scene back around 89-90, and the music definitely adds
to that feeling. Light and beautiful. If you want to find most of
their stuff, Siesta and Sunday are the labels to contact.

Oh, you have really picked three of my (and I know Kimmo's) absolute
favourites. Club 8 _is_ gorgeous, light, like an easy breeze, but
also a bit rough on the edges, which I only find to be appealing.
It is really the beauty of it. And when a band is mixing male/female
vocals, they go right into my heart. It doesn't matter if it is
Karolina or Johan who sings, it still sounds wonderful. Just compare
the two songs "Breakdown" and "She Never Calls Me" for example - both
just as fantastic pop gems, even though Karolina sings in the first
and Johan in the second. Karolina's voice really reminds me of Jennie
Medin's (Cloudberry Jam) at times, though I suspect I'm referring to
their earlier work as Jennie's voice has become a lot stronger these
days. Anyway, I definitely recommend their Siesta album "Nouvelle"
released last year.

Good question, though their booking management doesn't list a
support act for any of their gigs. But then again, according to them,
the band was supposed to tour in the US during February and March!
Doesn't seem to have happened.

I know I have a note about what songs they performed somewhere here,
but I'm sure burrito (Petter - the walking Bear Quartet discography :-))
can tell you faster than it would take me to find it. Right Petter?
About where to get a copy... I know West Side is sitting on all the
Peel sessions - they've included a Mufflon 5 one on a promo compilation.

Hmm, I also have a sneaky feeling about the album - their singles are
way better by themselves (just like I feel about Petrol..), but their
live performance really knocks those feelings away. Even though I have
only seen them once.

What?! Okay, I don't have the album, so I probably shouldn't open my
mouth, but I have heard a load of songs on various compilations and
live, and it's just absurd to give them a measly **. I really suspect
that the reviewer has no clue to the band's history, and didn't get what
they and their music is all about, because let's face it, if you're a
Blur, Pulp, Oasis, whathaveyou buff, you're really not suspecting a
genuine and serious band like Komeda. Komeda is simply not on your menu,
but that doesn't mean they're not any good!
