Just want to point out that "Ignorance is Bliss" is also a song by
the Ramones, from their 1989 album Brain Drain.

This seemed very important to me :)

Another thing, the second prize in the Lousy contest was awarded to the
suggestion "Jesper Larsson". What's so amazing with that name... should
I know someone called that? I have a feeling I missed out on something of
vital importance...

Subject: Cardigans gig

Hi all,

I went to see the Cardigans in London on Wednesday, and had a jolly good time
thanks. Annoyingly I missed Eggstone altogether (they were first on) but saw
most of Popsicle - they seemed a bit, I don't know, uncertain, nervous, and
weren't keeping time together very well at all, but they got a good clap at the
end. And the bassist uses the same bass as me but has this strange jerky wrist
movement... looks very painful.

The Cardigans themselves took a few songs for Nina's voice to warm up, but once
they got going the audience were leaping up and down a bit. They played most of
the new album plus five or six songs off Life, and a couple of older things I
didn't know - still with those funny chord progressions that make their music
sound 'Cardigany'. The main surprise for me, I'd not seen them live before, was
how ordinary they looked: I'd expected a bit more glamour (perhaps the costumes
they wear on Life!), but they were all just in street-type clothes. Peter was
leaping about like a mad thing, though, and got a huge cheer for the guitar solo
on Sick and Tired: and he put in a few backing vocals too, although not as much
as on the records.

A very good evening, anyway, despite not being able to get home because London's
underground network wasn't working (apparently _twenty_thousand_people_ were
trapped under ground when the electricity failed), so all you other non-Scans on
the list, see them soon!

love
Mo

I found this on http://www.aftonbladet.se/puls/livesve.html:

Half Japanese Duo: Växjo 16/11

Is this really the Jad Fair band Half Japanese? I doubt it
since no one mentioned it on the list, but I thought I'd
ask anyway.

This morning, on the radio, I heard the new Hardy Nilsson song for the
third time and, also for the third time i mistook it for a new Jumper song.
Can anyone tell me if this is because Jumper has done a rip-off, because
Hardy Nilsson has done a rip-off, or because I´m just damned tired at nine
o' clock in the morning (funny, but I think the two previous times I´ve
heard the song has been about the same time!)?

Yes, you are. :) It's still a Jellyfish song. :) Though one probably
can't tell from the way we sound, we're fanatic fans of Jellyfish. :)

Don't worry, you haven't. We haven't got a clue about who "Jesper Larsson"
is, we just thought that it was a fun title suggestion.

And Is Mess the same mess that comes from Vaasa? Do they know about this?
Should i call them, as at least I would like to know if my band was put on
the same cd as 22PP?

Does everybody on the list like lemonator? I just can't stand them.
they put on the most boring show. All the songs sound alike, but maybe i've
heard too little. And another band really don't like is the supperheads,
i mean they don't have anything of their own, everrything sounds like
a popsicle that can't get kappahl out of their system, still partly
influenced by Brian Adams, and the accent isn't very charming either.

I'm sorry about this, but i really can't see the "indie" in any band that
actually IS a kappahl commercial.

Well now i'll tell you what i DO like, cause I DO like finnish "indie":
Piano, Rumpu ja Kukka. there you have it. Right there next to the Velvet
underground.

Sorry for coming out as such an "indier than thou" kind of person.
I'm too tired and i orkar not rewrite this completely useless post.
Hate me.

Subject: Eels ticket probably for sale

Hi, this has nothing to do with scan-indie really, I just hope you don't mind
too much...

This is the way it is:
I don't want to sell a ticket for the Eels-concert at Gino in Stockholm on
Thursday, but I think I'll have to.

That is if I'm not able to find out a way to somehow get in there eventhough
there is a stupid rule that says I have to be over 20. I didn't check that
when I bought the ticket and thought that "well, it won't be too long until
I'm 18 and I hope they'll be kind enuogh to let me in". But now... I don't
know...

I'll try to call Gino and hear what they say. If there is no possibility for
me to see Eels (which I've been waiting for since I first heard Novocaine for
the soul) I'll have to let someone else take the ticket... sad but true.
Or perhaps shall I go there and see what happens?

Hmm... Advice please... Do you think they'd let me in?
And let me know if you're interested in the ticket.

Elin

Heh, you know, when I listen to that particular song now again, you're quite
right! It's got the same muffled "du tu tu tu" voice in there. Though I
really like the songs 'Kavpunki Meren Rannalla' and 'Ruthinas' (sorry about
the spelling, I'm not sure it is correct) the most on "Suuri Valkea". Both
songs just sticks to me like glue. They did the first time I heard them,
and now they pop up in my head once in a while. Extremely good songs in fact.

I'll go to the concert in Stockholm on saturday, though I'm not sure I'll

aBLe - (H.Lime) and Leslies (H.Lime) released their debut albums, Prestigeless
Lovesounds and Totally Brilliant, in Japan last week on the label
"L'appareille Foto" (under Nippon Columbia). As usual these releases
are different from the Swedish ones when it comes to the sleeves as
well as the songs! We'll be back with information on what really is
different in the next installment. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Aquadays - are no more. Yes that's right. The band decided that they would
drop their name, and never play their old songs again. All due
to the member who quit earlier this year, Klara Albinsson. But,
they will select a new name for the band in the near future and
start all over together with new member Sara Assbring on vocals.
Interesting enough the band (Aquadays) appears in Japanese
magazine Lib Arts first Internet (WWW) issue released December
1st with an article and sound clips (RealAudio in ISDN format).
So check out the URL: http://www.sumai.or.jp on December 1st!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Backfish - (AWSF) debut album producer, Posies own Ken Stringfellow, has
arrived in Skelleftea! Media in Sweden just woke up and realized
what was happening, so you will probably get to see a lot of
interviews, reports and whatnot in the papers and on the TV in the
near future. Ken has produced a bunch of bands/records in his past,
including This Busy Monster: 1st 7" on Barsuk Rec. (co-produced
w/Jon), Sky Cries Mary: _Until The Grinders Cease_ LP on New Rose
Rec., France, (co-produced w/Jon & Roderick), Ross: _Sugar_ LP on
Munster Rec., Spain. Produced/Engineered/Mixed, Parkinson DC:
_Albanige_ LP on Munster Rec., Spain P/E/M, Teer: 2 songs on
_Hullabaloo_ LP P/E/M, White Flag: _Against White Flag_ 7" on
Munster Rec., Spain Produced/Mixed. So if someone have all of
these and can spot a red thread, maybe we'll all know how the
Backfish debut will sound! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Billboard - the US music business magazine will have a special issue on
Sweden called (amazingly enough) "Sweden Special". The issue
is released on December 14th, 1996. (Source: ExMS News)

Cessna - the indiepop chameleons from Tampere in Finland have recently
finished recording for what will be their debut CD titled "Bordeaux",
to be released on the US label Radio Khartoum. This 13-track package
is expected to be out some time after New Year. If everything goes as
planned, January 1997 will also see the release of the four-track 7"
EP "Holiday on Ice", on an other US label, Jigsaw Records.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Coo - from Finland played together with Supperheads in Jyvaskyla on November
23rd, and will play in their hometown Tampere together with Romantic
Visions and Tuna Flakes at Tulliklubi on December 20th! If you live
somewhere even remotely near there, you better go!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Dreamphish - is a new and interesting band from Estonia. The band formed about
a year ago. The founding members Arpeau (guitars, bass) and Jan
(guitars, bass) had played together for about three years when
they found their genius female members Kaddi (vocals), MarjuSass
(vocals, trumpet) and their drummer Margus. They have made some
home recordings in the past, but is now at a point where they are
able to work in a real studio. This can be heard on their latest
demo "The First Band Session" which has two songs, 'Midnight
Comes Around' and 'Ancestors'. Both songs are definitely in the
jangly guitars / eerie female vocals / Simon Scott drums field,
which should create some interest around these parts if I'm not
mistaken. The band recently entered the Estonian radio chart at
4th place (in Tallinn) and 10th place (in Estonia) with the song
'Midnight Comes Around'. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Fivel - (NONS) are on tour in Sweden at the moment. They played in Goteborg
on November 11th, Eskilstuna (w/bob hund) on the 23rd. Next up is
Linkoping and Herrgar'n on thursday. After that they play in Lund
at Smalands Nation (w/bob hund) on December 5th, Vaxjo at Kafe
Kristina at December 6th, where P3 Live will record the concert to be
broadcasted early next year, and finally in Hultsfred at Metropol
together with bob hund on December 7th. Highly recommended gigs.
The band entered Z-TV Video Top List "Listan" this week at 7th place
with their video to the song "Convict Grass", which looks like Curve's
"Missing Link" video only there's no rain. Instead the whole band and
the room they are in is filled with mud! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Lemonator - (Warner) spent four days recording a video for the song "Superb"
from their latest single with the same name a few weeks ago.
Apparently it features the band as "Lemonhumanoids" who lands
on the earth to paint objects yellow, animatronics, and a live
section where they play on a very very small stage in the middle
of an empty soccer stadium. The video will be ready for release
by the end of this week. Currently, the band has yet again
entered the studio in order to record their upcoming full-length
album to be released in February next year. The plans for the
full-length includes "three fast punkpopsies and the rest will
be moodier stuff, except for one country flavored popsicle and
two slow, moody and melodic Kentish/Posies songs" according to
the band. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Merrymakers - have dropped their production company StockHouse and their
record label CNR Music. Instead, the band will concentrate
on the interest they have received from the international
market. Negotiations are currently being held with Virgin/
Japan. The band is not sure if they want to find another
label in Sweden or not at the moment, or go ahead on their
own. Something that has proven fruitful for several other
Swedish bands in the past. Time will tell. Check out their
homepage while you wait: http://www.lillpite.pitea.se/merrymak
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

MIDEM Cannes 97 - the Swedish representation at the yearly French riviera
music business gathering, which takes place January 19th
to 23rd 1997, is already bigger than ever, and there is
still time to register! So far 48 companies (39 in 1996),
and 126 representatives (103 in 1996) have registered.
(Source: ExMS News)

Petrol - (Studio Bla) released their debut single "Walk By" on the Diesel
sub-label "Studio Bla" on November 4th. The single was produced
by Magnus Frykberg and pressed in 5000 copies. It is hopefully
currently available from your local record store. The two girls
write all the material themselves, but had to receive help from
extremely known musicians to record the single, as they do not yet
have a fully dedicated band. At the moment they are trying out a
band called "Y-Front" in order to manage the gigs planned for the
band before Christmas. If you are a faithful Selected News reader,
you already know that their sound can best be described as a mixture
between Lush and the Cardigans, only with a large portion of pop
thrown in the blender as well. If you want to read more about them,
check out the latest issue of Nojesguiden or Pop magazine. If you
want to see them, why not take a look at Z-TV program "Tryck Till"
where their video, cut by Stakka Bo, to the song "Walk By" will
appear very soon, or keep an eye open on TV4's "Sen Kvall Med Luuk"
in December, where they might just appear one night if everything
goes as planned. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Red Sleeping Beauty - the amazing Swedish band from Stockholm finished the
mixing of their new album called "Soundtrack" a week
ago. The album will be released on Spanish fab label
Siesta Records in January 1997. At the same time, the
album will also be released in Japan. Songs included
on the new album are:

Side One: Side Two:
The Young Pretenders Certainly
Soul Provider How Do You Kill Your Food?
The Things I'd Say It Happens
Nervous Your Opinion
Summer At It's Best The Light That Guides You
Enough You're All There Is
Casino Classic

And if you didn't know it before, RSB are:
Kristina Borg (vocals), Mikael Matsson (guitars,
keyboards and bass), Niklas Angergard (vocals, guitars,
keyboards and bass) and Carl-Johan Nasstrom (bass and
guitars). Additional musicians on the new album are:
Johan Fagelstrom (trombone), Jan Fernkvist (trumpet),
Jakob Blomback (flute), and Dennis Lindqvist (drums).
The new album was recorded at Acetone Studio, engineered
by Hakan Gostas and produced by Red Sleeping Beauty.
(Source: Siesta News)

Russian Love - (Zen Garden) from Finland have released their first single
from their forthcoming album "Gala Brutale" only on the
Internet! The song released is called 'That's What They Tell
Me When I Sleep' and is available at the official Russian Love
homepage in RealAudio, Shockwave and normal WAV file formats.
Note that this single will not be available anywhere else.

Sandy Lyle - spent the weekend between November 15th and 17th recording
five new songs for a CD5 called "Rock" which the band will
release themselves around December 9th, 1996. The band has
changed somewhat, from the nicer and friendlier sound to a
not so nice and more guitar filled sound. If you have read
the Scandinavian Indie reviews of their earlier demo tapes,
you have some idea to what they sound like anyway. Only 500
copies will be made, so if this sounds interesting, you can
order the EP directly from the band by contacting Rami:
rami@hem.passagen.se. You might also be able to find copies
at Pet Sounds in Stockholm late December. The price will be
about 50 SEK / copy. Songs on the CD5 are: 'Your Stone',
'The Only One', 'Moon Queen', 'Illusions', and 'Stars Burn
and Fall Inside of Me'. Check out their homepage at URL:
http://www.e.kth.se/~e95_rni/sandy.html.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Shredhead - (NONS) quits! Yes, after four years, two albums, one mini album
and two singles, the Umea jazz/rock/hardcore/funk/punk/popsters
throw in the blanket, put down their basses, tune down their
guitars to minor, pack the snare drum, sell the tour bus and
shut the door to their rehearsal room. The members feel that
they have pushed their own, quite special, genre as far as they
could, and have therefor reached an end. An end that comes when
they are at the top. (Source: NONS News)

Siesta Records - the fab record label in Spain have started to move in on
the Swedish music market. The label has established close
contacts with, among others, list favourites Harry Lime
Records and North Of No South! This has opened up a whole
new chance for everyone involved to check out each country's
healthy moments of cool breeze pop. At the moment, this new
contact making has made it possible for two of Siesta's
best bands, "La Buena Vida" and "Minema" to appear on the
new Harry Lime compilation CD "A Twist Of Lime" which was
to be released on November 28th, but will now probably be
pushed a bit into December. You won't regret paying Siesta's
homepage a visit: http://www.get.es/siesta/index.htm
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Slowball - the Stockholm based record label, have updated their information
presented in the last Selected News. The Push Kings 7" single
can now be found at Freak Scene, Pet Sounds, Melotronen, Dolores
and probably Jukebox in Lund as well. Outside Sweden, you can
find it from: Apartment Records (Norway), Naptime (Holland),
Studio Muscle (Belgium), Cargo UK and Rough Trade (UK), Surefire,
Cargo, Darla, Get Hip, Sqealer, Parasol (USA), Outside Music,
Sonic Unyon, Scratch (Canada). The compilation tape is available
outside Sweden from Bacchanalian Revel (UK), Studio Muscle
(Belgium), Naptime (Holland), AJAX, Road Cone, Blackbean &
Placenta, Squealer, Jigsaw (USA), Scratch (Canada). If you'd

Supperheads - (Warner) released their new album "Lunch" about two weeks ago
and a new single called "Umbrella Song" a bit earlier. The
album has an apparent title considering their previous album
which was called "Breakfast" (released on Tangerine Records).
The new album is a bit rougher on the edges, but it is
definitely still pop! The band has also received a completely
new official homepage: http://www.presspyroo.fi/supperheads.

Yvonne - (Energy) a close friend of the band has confirmed somewhat airy
rumors spread earlier this month. These rumors said that the band
had started to plan their next album, and were looking for a
possible producer. Possible was apparently Jorgen Cremonese (from
Whipped Cream) who went to Dalarna with the band last week to try
out and test ideas with only analog equipment. These now confirmed
rumors also said that the band's second album should be out around
March/April 1997. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

"....written amongst the stars...."??????

c'mon give us all a break, this hint just brings out what is so lousy
about swedish popjouralism (and their british counterparts and
compadres in crime).

for those who do not know it jesper larsson is one of the writers of
sound affects, swedens longest living fanzine, though the staff seem
to hate the word and are opting for the more credible magazine. though
he's not an all that bad writer jesper is the one on the SA staff that
most frequently and proudly affiliates himself with the bands he
interviews and sort of elevates himself to their level. HE is one of
them, a star in his own right just cause he gets to share their beers
after the shows and let sony pay his trips to germany to hang out with
brainpool for a week. and that starlike attitude sucks. which actually
makes the song title even better, hating someone you've never met.

i might be a stepping over the line here, but the lofty attitude just
gets me so mad. jestper isn't a bad guy, he's quite nice actually even
though his attitude sucks.

but.....i guess thats what seperates the mice from the men and the
FANZINES from the glossy pages filled with correct language but
lacking soul and spirit and the URGENCY of popmusic.

to quote the ab fab boyracer, who define the word attitude...

"it gets me so hard...."

take care toby

Ah well, but hobnobbing with the stars is just so much _fun_, it's no
wonder some people make a big thing about it. Hell, I exchange email
with a major Finnish rock star called Kimmo Saaskilahti
... ;)

Damn, I guess it's too late for me to review bob hund's single
'Dusseldorf' then. Call it corporate sell out for them to release a
single at all, but it's got 'Horlurar' on it, which is the most
gorgeous bob hund goes Kraftwerk meets vocoder thrashes guitar song
you ever heard in your entire life. Just brilliant.

Ehhh, so _that's_ why you get so excited about it all. ;) There's way
too little about scan-indie music that gets me hard, no, not even the
other guys in Broder Daniel...

yeah, I understand it must be difficult to remember that there still are

Indeed, just like in "Queer" by Garbage; otherwise it reminds me of "Only
Happy When It Rains".

Well, the songs themselves might be OK, but the production is just too
polished and not 'risky' enough...just too 'mainstream' and 'safe' for me to
get really excited about. The track I put on the CD was okay though.

hi,

Gentle Tuesday, a fresh popband from Eskilstuna, Sweden is currently
focusing on their new release 'Gentle Tuesday e.p', Dorian Rec, 2 december.

* I keep on doin it
* Life has its charm
* Make no mistake
* I never gonna love you again

The best elements of Style Council, Beautiful South, June Brides, Great
melodies, Easy Listening, Swedish fresh colour and excitement described the
sound of Gentle Tuesday, extra ingredients like Organ, Piano, Vibes, Cello
and horns makes this band certainly special.

Swaggered with self confidence they have everything a great pop band should
have, "It is a remarkably lovely band that manages to transcend it´s
blindingly obvious influences just by being so damned good and the songs
are brilliant, particularly I mostly enjoy the hedonistic atmosphere and
those adorable vocals flying over the trumpets" as someone said.

for more info, please e-mail me...

Thank you very much

I took it as my official calling to write something about the scene here
in Finland.

First of all, yes I know mess. They have arranged some gigs for us in Vaasa,
and we have arranged something for them here in Jakobstad. Actually that was
called poppaloora, maybe some of you have heard about it.

Well, last weekend there was a band competition held in vaasa, and the
finalists are playing next weekend. The winner will get to make a cd.
There are some really promising bands there: Toothpik, sonic youth
influenced, VERY much so and very talanted, two guitars bass drums and
nasal singing, they should have a demo, and I can't say too many good
things about them.

Sgt pepperoni, which is a diesel-smelling pure rock band from my town,
really , really good live, they have good chances of winning with songs
like: Ecstasy on the highway, and Pussy is my buisiness.

Mess are also amongst the Finalists, and they play rock--pop anti-
capitalism SY influenced, with a guitarist that adores the manics,
... messy music.

There is a band here in Jakobstad called SNAIL, and they are really ok.
they have a good songwriter, perfect female AND male singer, they play,
as they call it, folk-rock. They sound a BIT like lemonator, only with
juliana hatfield on vocals, and they have much more diversity in their
songs.

In Febuary a compilation cd will appear, at least for promotion, with
different bands from Jakobstad, and this cd will be really interesting,
as there are some really good bands from here, of course not only "indie"
bands. Our band will also be on this cd with two songs, and I can't
explain what we sound like, because first of all all our songs are quite
different, and everyone in the band is Influenced by different music,
which makes a mixture of something like this: a Jarvis Cocker influenced
singer on vocals, and a seBADoh, deep turtle, pistepirkko, sonic youth
+more influenced rest of the band.

I could send a demo to you Kimmo if you like. Sorry for the long post,
if you got through all of this then you really should get something
better to do.
