It all stinks.
The monopoly is scary. EMA signing small bands just because they don't
want other booking agencies to compete. They really don't give a damn about
the small bands, they just don't want upcomers to survive.
EMA tried to stop the gig at Herrgar'n just because they recently had
signed Mazarine street - greed rules. I just hope that the bands
themselves are doing something about it.
More and more bands are trying to fix the gigs themselves just because they
want to play. But the agencies won't let them play for less money than
agreed. What are we going to do about it? EMA just laugh in our face
because we're small.
I mean...Superswirls at sondagsoppet....bands like Mazarinee Street will
be playing places like Volvo's company party or the Water Festival. It all
stinks.

That is probably right, though who actually _reads_ her "list"? It is just
getting longer and longer, and I wouldn't be surprised if it fills up
the whole page one day. I mean, come on, is it that hard for her to pick out
what she really thinks is the "best right now". When she started with it,
it was just a couple of bands or songs. Now, it looks more like a "I'll
help this band, and this band, and this band, and... and maybe they'll
like me, or even thank me one day..." Pathetic.

True. In the latest issue of the EttNollEtt fanzine they talk about how Pop
"works", ie. that they tell the record labels that they won't write about
their artists unless they get _exclusive_ rights to interview them, that is,
make the labels promise that no other magazines, fanzines or whatever
will get to interview the artists. If the record company does not agree,
then Pop won't write about the artist. And the artist has nothing to say
about it. Scary. In fact, this is so disgusting that it is probably about
time to do something about it.

Hmm, I don't know about that, though Pop has been very clear about what
they think of the band, and then they played at Lollipop, are on the
cover of Pop, played at Gino, are featured on Musikbyr}n (on SVT 1 on
thursday) and Sen Kv{ll Med Luuk this week. I wonder if they won't
appear on S|ndags|ppet this week as well? If so, the picture is
extremely clear.

Backfish - (AWSF) are entering the studio on November 25th, in order to
record their debut album. Producer is none other than Kenny
from The Posies (as previously reported in this column).

The Bear Quartet - (AWSF) have not gone mad! When we heard them last, it
was on the latest AWSF compilation "Give Ear!" where
their song 'Red Star' had been remixed by Tea Al?
(same as on A Shrine's latest releases) which gave it
that ambient/techno feel. Their new songs show that
they are back to the Bear Quartet we know though, and
the band enters a studio in Gothenburg in November

Blithe - (AWSF/Alias) recently toured the US, and apparently everything went
okay. Favourite cities were Boston (where they played twice, and
where people came to both their shows just to see them) and New York
(at Brownies) and Chicago. The band is going back to tour the US
again this spring. This time they will be on tour for two months!
All their records are currently available in the cities they played

Carpe Wade - (AWSF) appears to be the new pop heroes of Skelleftea. Everyone
is listening to them, and their gigs are always packed. They
have booked the studio from this saturday (October 26th) and
have a month to record their new album (to be released as soon
as it is ready). Apparently the band has received a lot of
attention outside Sweden as well, and will probably be the
next West Side band on their way to conquer new territories.

Dada Girl - from Finland will, if everything goes as planned, be included
on the Records compilation CD released in January! (see below
for more information about the Dorian Records compilations).

Dorian Records - owner Roger has changed his mind about the upcoming 2CD
compilation. Instead, it will be two separate CD compilations,
one to be released in December, and the other in January
next year. On the December one, we will find bands like
Dr Saturn, Supernova, Picabo, S:t Moores, The Wellmeant
and 15 additional bands (a total of 20 bands).

Dune - from Halmstad, and one of the bands included on the first Dorian
Records compilation CD will have these songs on the upcoming Harry
Lime compilation CD called "A Twist of Lime" (release: November):
'Swing Me' and 'Blue Boy'. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Fidget - (Mega) released a 7" promo single (1000 copies) with 'My Prawns'
and 'Semi-Naked' on October 11th. The real CD single "Semi-Naked"
with 'Semi-Naked' and 'Teddybear Baby' is planned to be released
on November 29th together with a (not completely decided yet) gig
at Studion in Stockholm. Their debut album, with working name
"No Boogie Coming Your Way" is still planned to be released early
next year. The title comes from the song 'Hey Little Sister' on
the album, which is a duet between Nina Natri and Jay Jay Johansson.
Their own label on Mega is called "Prodik" - the name was chosen
from two things, first an article in Pop magazine where children
got to say what they thought about various kinds of music, and
one called Prodigy "Prodik". Second, it was the name of a drink
(1/2 vodka, 1/2 Baileys + a few drops of Roses Lime) invented after
their gig at Herrgar'n in Linkoping in March this year.

Gentle Tuesday - from Eskilstuna are just about to start shooting a video
to the song 'I Keep On Doin It', which will also appear
on the upcoming CDEP "Gentle Tuesday E.P" to be released
on Dorian Records on November 25th. None other than Roger
(label owner) and his brother are the ones behind the
camera. The video will be recorded in and outside Halmstad
featuring the band driving along in a car, with a destination
not to be revealed yet. If you can't wait for the CDEP to be
released, you can find the band's 7" EP "Chanson De Geste"
from mailorder companies around the world like Mind The Gap,
Cowly Owl! and Delcious Goldfish. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Loosegoats - (StartRec) 's single "Country Crock" has been seriously
delayed due to problems at the CD pressing plant. It will
hopefully be out when you read this, but most of the record
stores have ordered it together with a bunch of other new
Startracks singles (Candysuck, Monster, Fireside and Refused),
all to be released on November 4th, so do not be surprised
if you can not find it before that date. Another brand new
item: the band opens for Sebadoh in Stockholm on November 23rd!

Mirrormaze - is a newly formed band from Jonkoping, with Staffan Bjork (from
The Wellmeant) on drums. They are said to sound somewhat like
Pixies, which ought to be enough to generate some interest.

Pondicherry - a band that played at Trastocksfestivalen this summer is
no more. The members of the band have split up and some have
formed new bands, and one of these bands (that the Pondicherry
guitarrist joined - but now on bass) wrote an instant hit about
48 hours after he joined (it does sound a bit like a mix between
The Wannadies, (old) Popsicle and (old) The Bear Quartet)! West
Side are keeping the name of this new band a secret until they
have something more concrete to say (ie. when they have signed

Popundret - (AWSF) plays at Herrgar'n in Linkoping tonight and at Kalmar
Nation in Uppsala tomorrow. The band comes with a stand-in
on bass (Niclas Wiklund (guitar) from Stardog) because their
ordinary guy on bass (Martin Wiklund) has an exam he does not
want to miss. Jon has never played with the band before, so
it will definitely be two interesting evenings to say the least.

Sound Affects - issue #32 (the best Swedish Pop Magazine) is out (subscribers
should receive it today)! Non-subscribers have to wait
another week before it hits the stores. Be sure to read all
the 92 record reviews and 6 retro record reviews as well as
the fantastic Fidget article! :-) Next issue will be out on
December 12th, and will contain articles about (among others)
Juliana Hatfield (she's in the studio as we speak!), Kula
Shaker, Jaguar, Loosegoats (interview takes place on sunday
in Linkoping), Ben Folds Five, Mufflon 5 and Pusjkins (from
Linkoping). Definitely a must get issue!

Tuk Tuk Rally - (Beat Butchers) breaks up! Here is the band's press release:
The circle is closed and the bag is full. It is time to close
the books. It is time to end. Five years full of energetic
song-writing comes to an end, and now we are taking different
paths with our sights set on new projects. Everything started
once up on a time by a kitchen table with an acoustic guitar
and a harmonica, which later turned into various live
performances, radio and tv-appearences. Happy days, dumb days,
hectic days.... With this, we want to thank all those who have
been there, who have turned our festival gigs into, to us,
unforgettable memories, the few chief mourners for their brave
support a pale tuesday night at Tre Backar and those who have
bought our records. With our feet steady on the ground and the
flag at the top, we hereby announce that Tuk Tuk Rally no

The Wannadies - (BMG) yes that's right - the band has broken their contract
with MNW and were signed to BMG yesterday. It looks like the
"rumours" one could read about in evening papers earlier
this year were true. The new album "Bagsy Me" is therefor
delayed and will not be released until January 1997 throughout

ohhh I've forgot... there aren't too much indie-pop bands in Latvia and

Aha! At last some news. So who's in the new band then, apart from
Morgan (the P'cherry guitarist)? This sounds raaather interesting...
My guess is that Morgan is going to be a bit of a star.

what's the point redefining a term that has been around for so many years
already? it's not like we ever would try to redefine "rock'n'roll", so
let's just accept the fact that "indie-pop" is pretty much equal to
"guitar-based pop bands wearing their pixies/ride influences on their
sleeves".

I agree. We did have a short discussion about this a couple of years ago,
but like most of these discussions (ie. my computer is better than yours,
I have seen band X more times than you, and so on), nothing interesting
came out of it. Pretty interesting though, that some people feel that there
really _is_ such a definition. Even Musikjournalen Pop asked that question
when they interviewed me, and I'll say the same thing now as I did then:
What is indie and what's not is a personal thing, and not a worldwide
accepted definition of something unique.
On the other hand, hip-hop and techno is definitely not pop, so I wouldn't
call a compilation with those types of music an indie pop compilation.

i had no idea. but that is just fucking gross. obviously pop doesn't give
a shit about either bands or fans. just because they have such a severe
complex for not being able write good songs and be a good-looking rock
stars, they pretty much want to run the music biz in this country. i
believe the complex for not being accepted as an artist was pretty much
what drove hitler to becoming der furher and causing the death of 50
million people. yuck.
glad i (though after a lot of thinking) renewed my sound affects
subscription.

ps. it's not like i think pop has bad writers, but the fact that they
exploit the lack of competition to the greatest extent gives me the
creeps. especially when the people who are the foundation of the whole
business (the bands and their fans) are the ones affected. double yuck.

I saw Popundret play on Herrgår'n in Linköping yesterday and I must admit
that pop music can be rather pleasant when it sounds like this - melodies
instead of roaring guitars. To those who were there (I guess you were,
Erik) I have some questions: What's the name of the last song they played
(the "extra-number") and is it available on CD-single (my wallet cries at
the very thought of buying more full-length records right now)? I also
wonder if the guitar-player (the big one) has anything to do with "A
Shrine" or if it really exists two people, looking like that, in this
little country?

P.s. In Dagens Nyheter (a leading swedish morning newspaper) today you can
read that Lush, with Chris Acland on drums, will play in Stockholm this
weekend. I guess it's just a matter of time before the reunion of Beatles
with John Lennon?

As I don't have ztv it didn't matter that I was in Eskilstuna during their
performance...
But I read that the album "Filter" is out in about two weeks (don't know if I
dare to say that it was in expressen fredag...)
I'm definately going to buy it. No doubt about it.
And on Monday I'm probably going to buy bob hund's Dusseldorf single.
Just one more thing.

Yes, they were (and are) extremely pleasant to listen to, even though
I did miss the Hammond and synth strings/sounds here and there. It was
pretty evident they wouldn't play "I'm Going Out She Said..." without
Ekan on a Hammond, and I was a bit sad about that because it is my
favourite Popundret song. But. But! As they played "Furball" (which
Ekan wanted to play but not the rest of the band :-)), which is such a
wonder beyond belief, I was happy again. :-)

If you saw someone with a camera taking a bunch of photos - well, that
was me. :-) I've been taking pictures of almost all the bands playing
at Herrgar'n, but I haven't had the money to have them developed yet. :-(
One day I will though, and put them up on the Web pages.

Their set list looked like this (34 minutes):

11. Radiant Warmth
As far as I know, Radiant Warmth (the country/western song...) only
appears on their full length "Montmartre 15 40", but I don't have any
of their singles (2) so I can't say that I know for sure, unfortunately.

:-) Yes, that's Ekan alright. He is one of the "founders" of Popundret.
Ekan, Martin Wiklund (who wasn't with them) and a girl called Marielle
back in 1991. He is such a great guitar player that I almost got tears in
my eyes. And what a stage performance he's got - he is totally into what
he does. I actually spent most of the evening talking to him about A Shrine
(and saved a lot of money because I didn't have time to buy any beer... :-)),
and their "new" sound. Needless to say, they will never go back to the
"old A Shrine sound" again, and their next album will not sound like the
new one either (he said).

Heh, guess that's what has happened with Expressen as well. They don't
communicate. DN actually had a short piece about Chris Acland's suicide
a day or two after it happened, but I guess no one working with the DN
friday edition (called "Pa Stan", right?) noticed or something. Expressen
did the same thing a while ago. They had a short notice about The
Cranberries cancelling all their tour dates on a thursday, and then
the next day, in the friday edition "Fredag", the "tour guide" still
listed them.

Yes, it will be very interesting to hear what the whole album sounds like,

Really!? You know, I don't care for Brainpool much, so I usually change
the channel or something when the "We Aim To Please" video is on - but

Yeah, tell me about it. One did know that they considered themselves
"inventors" of what's hot and what's not - ie. what they write, is what
people should listen to, but that they had gone this far in the process,
that is, even preventing other magazines and fanzines from writing about
the bands they (Pop) want to "find"... I just don't know what to say.

That is true, they do have good writers, most of them are anyway, but
considering that they also screwed Sound Affects once upon a time
(you all do know that Pop is a product from Sound Affects - the first
Pop issue was made by the Sound Affects staff, where those who run
Pop today worked back then) I don't have much to say about the magazine
anymore, or the labels that go along with the magazine's demands.

Hmm, well Aftonbladet does have its moments. Like one of the "humour
sports" pages last week where they had a test (1X2) - "do you have what
it takes to be a sports journalist?". One of the questions there was:
"You want to a newspaper columnist because you think that it
seems to be so much fun."
1) You quickly apply for a job as pop writer because you have
heard that it is the only education you need.
X) You immediately leave Blue Saints and Black Army and Bajen Fans
because you realise that a membership there might create problems
for your work.
2) You train your vocabulary and add short commands for "loonies",
'braindead', 'boss', 'Remove Rickard Fagerlund', 'Pelle Svensson
is fat', 'spectator crisis' and 'Resign bla bla bla' in your word
processor.
Needless to say, the "correct" answer was... 1. And we all know who they're
talking about :-)

That's great! Though I really think it is time to make yet another Swedish
Indie tape with new songs. All the bands on the old tape have made new songs.
Most have even released new albums or singles, except Aquadays, Popundret,
Puffin, Salt and Sonic Surf City. Though both Popundret and Puffin have
released a new song each on the latest A West Side Fabrication compilation...
