I saw the video, which was called "polyesterday" on alternative nation and
I think it can be described as somewhere inbetween ambient techno and
trip-hop. Hard to say exactly, 'cause it changed tempo and sound at least a
couple of times.

Hey Sami,
that's also something I was wondering about.. I haven't seen it yet,
though I don't know where in the chain I'm at, so who knows how many
people are before me? Who's sitting on the tape!?

Yeah, and was I surprised! Gus Gus (from Iceland) "Polyesterday" from their
new CD5 "Polyesterday", Circle (from Finland) "Valerian" from their new
album "Zopalki" and Poor Rich Ones (from Norway) "Other Days" from something
I don't know what it is called "Naivety's Star" (and of course, not to forget,
Verve's "On Your Own")

But anyway, Gus Gus ... well, if you read what I wrote about * Doris Days *
a while ago on the list, that is exactly what Gus Gus' "Polyesterday" sounds
like. Urban trip-hop/ambient style - really suggestive music, though I have
to say that I like Doris Days better. They sound more.. hmm, what can I
say, professional? But then again, I haven't heard any other songs by
Gus Gus, so who knows? Maybe they are even better?

//Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se)

P.S. I have asked Alternative Nation to show stuff for as long as I
can remember (I mean, even back in the 120 Minutes days) and
they have _never_ showed anything I have requested... D.S.

No, I haven't heard it yet unfortunately - though I have the two singles,
"Dictionary" and "Who Are You?" (the last one is the best one - not as
tame as the first, but a bit rougher, more guitars, more pleasant in my ears..)
And I also have the Levi's Promo CD (!!) (on Stockholm Records) called
"Speaker & friends" they gave away if you bought Levi's stuff for more
than 500 SEK (last week at least) which has the following groups and tracks
on it - ((!!) means that I'm a bit surprised about it by the way...)

1. Speaker - "Who Are You?"
2. Speaker - "Dictionary"
3. Mutts - "I Need Needles"
4. Cloudberry Jam - "Going Further (Remix '96)"
5. Favorita - "Seven Comforts"
6. Tennis - "Shyway"
7. Tictox - "Sidetrack"
8. Calle Ljungstr|m - "Largo"

Subject: Re: Gus Gus

As a lot of people are talking about Gus Gus, I might as well post this
far-from-ready thingy I've been working on...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
* GUS GUS *
from the 4AD signing of the band
compiled, arranged, formatted and gathered
by: Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
PRESENTATION

The latest signing from 4AD, Gus Gus, are a collective of artists, musicians,
filmakers, photographers, actors and more. The are from Reykjavik, Iceland,
a city with a population of about 100,000. The collective has nine members,
each playing a crucial point in all the group's actions. Their debut release
on 4AD, an EP entitled "Polyesterday", is available on 12" (BAD6013) and CD
(BAD6013CD). Gus Gus will also release a full-length album early next year
on 4AD.

STEPH
-photographer
-cinematographer
-visual artist
Runs Elf19, Reykjavik's finest purveyor of vinyl dance music (with DJ
Agzilla). A unique mixture of backbeats and romance has made Steph Herr
Legowitz's favorite DJ. He is a great admirer of neck warmers.

DANIEL AGUST
-singer
-songwriter
-actor
Former ski-maniac and amateur sports freak. Has been in successful
Icelandic bands for nearly a decade. Previous band Nydonsk broke up
two years ago after eight years of piling up gold records. Since then
he has performed in musicals and plays in the Icelandic National Theatre
and City Theatre of Reykjavik. He has two albums by other artists and
also lends his voice to cartoon voiceover work (including dubbing Top
Cat's Benny into Icelandic).

BIGGI THORARINSSON
-musician
-computer programmer
Currently working on OZ Virtual, the 3-D internet browser. He discovered
music late at age 16 when he instantly fell in love with Sylvester (and
other Hi-NRG acts) which led him to Visage, Depeche Mode and Marc Almond.
He is previously known for his work as half of underground ambient-house
group T-World, which he formed in the late eighties with DJ Herr Legowitz.

MAGNUS JONSSON
-singer
-songwriter
-actor
Magnus loves California and often performs onstage as a homosexual. In
fact, he is a former drag queen. Few Icelandic actors have performed
onstage as homosexuals more often. He is the former lead singer of
sentimental rock band The Silvertones. He adores James Bond and was
once brutally killed in a Hollywood viking B-movie.

HERR LEGOWITZ
-musician
-DJ
Also known as Maggi Lego, Herr is Iceland's most celebrated DJ. He is
the owner of the country's largest vinyl record collection. A master of
synth trading, he loves only his girlfriend more than his fast cars.
Herr contributed the special remixing effort on "Cold Breath '79" from
the Gus Gus EP "Polyesterday".

HAFDIS HULD
-singer
-songwriter
-actress
-dancer
Hafdis has been dancing, acting and singing onstage since the age of
four, encouraged by her lorry driving parents from Kopavogur. She sang
with several bands before Gus Gus (including hard rock band Shark
Remover). She performs in theatre and film. She is loved and admired
by the youth of her home town for being the most entertaining Sunday
school teacher at the local church.

SEFAN ARNI
-filmaker
-director
-writer
Sefan is also a glider pilot and a philosophy dropout. He makes videos
and documentaries with his brother (also in Gus Gus) Siggi Kjartansson
as the visual duo of Kjol & Anderson. Growing up in a print shop, he
familiarised himself with graphic design and various photographic
techniques. He discovered an untapped passion for acting during the
shooting of the latest Gus Gus film "Polyesterday".

SIGGI KJARTANSSON
-filmaker
-director
-writer
-songwriter
Siggi has an eye for detail. He is a former breakdancing elementary school
teacher and founded the multi award-winning film production company Kjol &
Anderson with his brother Sefan. He is also a professional liar. Manchmal
Gus Gus gut!

BALDUR STEFANSSON
-Director of Financial Arts (DFA)
-manager
-film producer
Baldur is also a controversial activist and once Iceland's most promising
young political candidate. He is the son of the director of the Icelandic
National Theatre. He has tried desperately all his life not to become
involved with any artistic activities, but failed, and is now in overdrive
at the helm of Gus Gus.

(written by Kjol & Anderson - 1996)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(I) REGULAR RELEASES

1. Polyesterday (October ?, 1996)
BAD 6013 - 12" (4AD)
a) Polyesterday
b) Gun (husmix)
c) Polydistortion

Notes: Gun appears on their Iceland-only released debut album. It is
------ filled with dirty funk guitar and techno rhythms.

Voices about "Polyesterday" 12": "Gus Gus is BRILLIANT!! This band does
------ trip hop better than Tricky and Massive Attack combined...the
song is catchy and poppy and deserves more than anything released
on 4AD this year."

2. Polyesterday (October ?, 1996)
BAD 6013 CD - CD5 (4AD)
a) Polyesterday
b) Cold Breath '79 (Crystallized)
c) Late Polyesterday
d) Polydistortion

Notes: The title track appears in three forms on the disc. The first
------ track has entrancing beats, weird noises and loops - throw in a
funky-sounding guitar and some borderline adult-contemp vocals.
Track 3 is a tripped out remix of the first track - more suitable
for the dance floor, and track 4 is an instrumental version.
Track 2 has female vocals (male on the three others) described as
"a female Bjork-meets-Portishead sort of approach", the beats are
more subtle, the guitar is bassier (not funky).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(II) PROMOS

1. Chocolate (September ?, 1996)
Gus 1 - 12" (???)
a) Chocolate
b) Chocolate (Techno)
c) Barry (Grave)
d) Cold Breath '79 (Craze)

Notes: ????
------

2. Polydistortion (September ?, 1996)
Gus 2 - 12" (???)
a) Polydistortion
b) Polyesterday
c) Cold Breath '79 (Husmix)

Notes: Polydistortion is a remix of Polyesterday, but bears little
------ relation to that track. It's a headtrip slow techno groove
that goes on for about 15 minutes (the single versions are
only 7.50 long) - and still seems too short. The other two
tracks are Polyesterday itself, different from the LP version
and probably the single version as well, and a very minmal
mix of Cold Breath '79.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(III) HISTORY (kind of)

Pre-4AD:
1) Their debut album was released on Iceland.

September 1996 (and signed to 4AD):
1) Gus Gus promo 12" single "Chocolate" cat.no "Gus 1" was single of the
month in Muzik magazine.
2) Gus Gus promo 12" single "Chocolate" cat.no "Gus 1" was number 5 in
the UK DJ Returns chart.

October 1996:
1) 4AD sends out huge promo postcards featuring a photo of the entire
ensemble on the picture side, and some info about their release on the
flipside.
2) Gus Gus CD5 single "Polyesterday" was reviewed in NME (first week of
October). They didn't actually make much note of the music except that
it was a rejoinder to Nirvana's "Polly" and was harrowing with emotive
vocals. Mentioned the cover for the fact that it looked like a dead body.

Just a little reminder to watch this week's "Musikmagasinet" on ZTV
where they talk about demo tapes, and about/with Petrol (those two
look like they really are from Vasteras, and have Pandora as heroine..
heh heh).

Anyway, it is pretty funny to see them take a demo that obviously no
hard rock/hardcore/metal label would even think about to .. yes, such
a label. What were they thinking? And also, to watch Per at MVG (A&R)
say that "if a band is good live, then we might sign them", which is
what he has been saying to bands as long as I can remember, but still
almost never goes to any concerts the bands he has said that to
arrange... Good thing they had Ola in the studio to say exactly the
opposite though. And LNS.. well.. umm...
