I don't actually know what i'm talking about, cause i'm from Finland, and
I've only read pop a few times. I would like to say that i found the writers
very good, and what I escpecially liked was how they in an article with pulp,
really asked Jarvis questions which he hadn't prepared, and that gave a
picture of how not witty he really is. And I really liked an article of bjork.
One negative thing is that they are maybe a little too subjective, and that
is not good if you don't agree with them.

John Darnielle and Peter(?) Hughes(?), the Inland Empire acoustic-lo-fi
experience hits Studion. They actually sound exactly like their (or his)
recorded stuff. Fast strumming, intense vocals. Highly recommendable.
The set here in Stockholm consisted both of the duo together, but also
sessions with each guy performing solo. I think, but this is really
strange, that they did a cover of a Tia (the Swedsih Blondie) song
called 'Blind', 'Blinded by Love' or something!!! Can someone confirm
this?
But hurry down to Lund to see them. They would play all their best
stuff in Lund because Linkoping woudn't be any good. In Linkoping they
eat bands like Mountain Goats for breakfast. ;-)

Subject: Singles pre-reviews...
I just can't let these new singles and EPs pass by without comments (reviews
will follow):
1. Coo - "Heavenly Blue" (Tangerine)
This band will receive my highest score and best review ever (when I
get to that point in the stack of CDs). Such innovative guitar riffs,
fantastic sound, gorgeous lyrics (even though they're a bit low),
I BEG ON MY BARE KNEES THAT THEY WILL COME AND PLAY IN SWEDEN !!!!
because I have heard how even more amazing they are live. ANYONE?
ANYWHERE? I know we have booking agencies / companies subscribing
to this list. Here's your chance! No one should be surprised that
they are from Finland, because that's apparently the next Scandinavian
country moving into the "Big" indie scene. Coo _is_ indie. Coo _is_
amazing. Coo's "Heavenly Blue" _is_ the next CD5 you're going to buy.
2. Doris Days - "Quiet Withdrawal" (Some Pearls)
I have never heard such addictive urban trip-hop/ambient in my life.
And their full length "Live In Poland" is even better! Fantastic
rhythms, scattered noise throughout every song like telephone
conversations, rain, wind, whatever! Nowhere near Portishead (which
many of the reviewers have thought suitable to compare them with)
but extremely and totally 120% better. Okay, they are originally
from Linkoping, but I have never met them, never heard them before
this single. If one trip-hop/ambient record was rewarded "album of
the year" then "Live In Poland" is my choice. So beautiful vocals
from Lisa Carlioth I melt on the spot. And the urban sound background
sounds fits the production so well it's amazing. I don't know which
one of the guys who sings, but his voice is so pleasant to listen
to. The lyrics are so thought out, I can't help but love it! Just
say "I held you, you held me down..." or "I dressed you, you undressed
me..." is so... thought through I can't imagine a Swedish band would
think of it! But they do, and they have! Slask Records (sub label
Some Pearls) have a gem here that I hope will be ground breaking
in Sweden and abroad. I have not heard something this beautiful
and addictive from Sweden in a long time. If you're even only thinking
that you maybe like trip-hop and ambient, you better get this album
(and single) immediately.
3. Loosegoats - "Country Crock" (Startracks)
Like former member Jens said, this _is_ the best they have done so far!
Lo-fi of course, rattling guitars of course, Christian with his
"J. Mascis" vocals of course. Lo-fi can't sound better than this.
4. Blissful - "Vitamins" (AWSF)
Oh my oh my, the perfect single (the album, also called "Vitamins"
isn't even close to this single unfortunately, even though it does
have the song "Vitamins" on it). Two hits, fantastic, devastating,
beautiful, far from what I have heard with the band earlier (only
compilation tracks). If you're going to buy ONE SMASH HIT single you're
not going to take out of your CD player this year, well, this is the one.
5. The All Janet - "Second" (AWSF)
One of my current favourite West Side bands (together with Backfish
Popundret, Mufflon 5 and Blissful) today - beautiful "edgy" music
with amazing guitars and "Stone Gossard vocals" when the songs hit
the electric guitar-filled choruses.

for anyone who's interested in Swedish music, the Hellacopters have released
a new 7" single! The tracks are: What are you lowdown b/w Another place.
It's released on Planet of Noise records (Chips, Sator) and is a limited
edition of 1000 copies. It cost's 39SKR and you can buy it through me or
any good record store. The Hellacopters are one of the most popular punk
bands in Sweden at the moment!

Sounds great insofar as sound quality is concerned, but: won't this be a
wee bit expensive?? :-0 I'm for it, ifthe cost isn't prohibitive.

HM! The gig in Linkoping was about 90 minutes long. If that didn't include
all their best stuff I suppose the audience in Lund brought sleeping bags
to the gig? Well, I liked their music, especially the song "In sickness and
in college" because I could really recognize my own situation in it ('the
books gets longer, the liquoer gets stronger'), but I think they could've
shortened it a bit. But if all street musicians had these texts it would
certainly be much funnier to take a walk in the centre of Stockholm.

Gunni, their bassist. Anyone who's going to be there on that date should

Well, they play at Studion so it's somewhat more problematic getting
tickets outside Sweden (in fact, it's pretty much a hassle when you
live outside Stockholm even...) because (I think at least) the only
places where you can buy tickets are from Mega, Freak Scene and
Pet Sounds (all record stores in Stockholm) and at Studion of course.
So you could always try to contact the venue directly, though I don't
have their number, unfortunately. Oh, and as far as I know the minimum
age is usually 18, but I'm sure those who live in Stockholm on this
list can give you far better help.

Backfish - (AWSF) debut album producer Ken Stringfellow from the Posies
says that the Posies are taking a break right now, and that
is why he has found the time to produce Backfish's album
Apparently he is getting lots of producing offers, and only
picks the ones that interest him the most. That ought to say

Dada Girl - from Finland have replaced their bass player! The band's new
bass player is Mikko Raisamo from Finnish favourites All Stars.

Fireside - (StartRec) will also be opening for Sebadoh (last Selected News
told about Loosegoats opening for them in Stockholm) on their
tour, though this time it is in Munich (Germany) on November 6th!

Gentle Tuesday - from Eskilstuna are working hard! There are plans in
the making to release a 7" single on US label "Kitty boo"

Happy Todd - from Kalmar will go to the studio in a few weeks time to record
songs for an upcoming CD single which is to be released on
Spinsign early 1997. The Spinsign compilation CD previously
reported about here has been cancelled on the other hand.
The band opens for Bob Hund in Kalmar at Studentkaren on

Lemonator - (Warner Finland) have decided on a release date for their
upcoming CD5 "Superb", and that's on November 11th, 1996! If
the single will be released outside Finland or not has not
yet been decided and no release date is set for the album yet

Penniless People of Bulgaria - (AWSF) enters the studio this week in order
to record seven new songs. A CDEP is planned
for release on AWSF early 1997. The band has
also recently made a video for the song

Shallow Soundwave - play at Underground in Gothenburg on November 29th,
so those of you who are not in Linkoping to watch
Soundtrack of Our Lives know where to go instead!

Wilma - (BMG Finland) is a band one should supposedly look out for, according
to many sources. They are a band that has recorded three albums so
far. They sing in Finnish and have a female singer. The music is
something in the vein of Portishead and Radiohead. Sort of moody pop
with sequencers, guitars & quiet vocals. Sometimes orgasmic guitar
walls and sometimes low, calm and simple. Very melodic. They appeared
on the Finnish top-list program "Listan" on FTV last thursday, where
they played two songs from their new and recently released album

That's true, and I don't want to sound like I don't trust anyone, but
perhaps it won't make it through the whole "CD chain"... no, but seriously,
one really has to trust those who sign up on these chains, or there would
never be any chains at all. Maybe we can have some kind of contest with
the CD as 1:st prize when it has been through the chain? Or we could make
extra CDs as well of course, but then those who want a CD will have to pay
for it, and then we're probably looking at some kind of law suit, right?
Any thoughts on how to solve this one?
I have received letters from people who have the equipment necessary
to make them, and who are willing to help out, so it is definitely
worth discussing at least.

Hey, often enough I forget that I'm not the only US listmember. Komeda is
on a brief tour of the US at this moment. Only two stops. And it's almost
too late to tell you about the New York show, which is tommorow night.
Well, it's still Sunday in California as I type this. The first show is
Monday, the 4th of November at Fez. I don't know the time or the address.
The second show is on Thursday (the 7th) at Spaceland, 1717 Silverlake
Blvd, in Los Angeles. I think that it starts at 9:30, but you'd better
check that detail for yourself. I'm going to make the trip down from SF to
the LA show, so if anyone else will be there, e-mail me, and I'll describe
my hair or something like that...

The phone no. to Studion is 08-34 44 54.
I think the minimum age is 18, but I'm not totally sure. I don't really
pay attention to that anymore, since it's a long long time since I had
that problem myself... (must've been when Killing Joke played in Stockholm
around 84-85, and riots ensued outside the venue because very few of the
true fans had reached required age...)
Sometimes bands that play Studion do an all-ages matinee in the afternoon.
Bob Hund and Refused have done it at least.

Could someone send me the info about the Icelandic Indie Tape (Icy Icy Tape)
because I seem to have lost my copies of the papers that were sent with
the tape? (ARGH!) Anyone?
Oh, and I wanted to ask if anyone has heard anything about a band from
Iceland called "Blome" ? Apparently they have released one album by themselves
called "The Third Twin", but that's about all I know at the moment.

All I know is that they are signed to 4AD and released there a
single in the beginning of october 96. I've only seen a picture

been cancelled, but i figured there might be some promos or demo tapes
around. If that is the case - review please. I think their latest single -
"Who are you?" was OK. But I'm also a bit sad that Green doesn't exist

They are from Iceland. It's a band formed by a bunch of filmmakers or
theatre guys, if memory serves.....unfortunatley I can't remember a damn
thing about their sound, but I think Albert Siggurdsson from this list
posted something about them. You there Albert?

Toby showed their video at Alternative Nation (MTV) last night.
