It's about time Ville Ukkonen did something about an english version

No really? You haven't heard 'Jossain' live, I suppose. Well, you
could give it away to a needy Link|pinger I suppose.

sweden's "

In the late 80's and early 90's a couple of Finnish filmmakers got a lot of
publicity in these parts. I'm not sure that I remember their names exactly
at this point, but they were brothers and the last name was something along
the lines of Kaurasmaki (?). I saw three or four films by one of them, one
of which was "
The Leningrad Cowboys Go to America" (or something like
that). [The others were "
Ariel" (which I liked better) and "the Match
Factory Girl" (which I adored) - and there might have been something else].
Deadpan slap-stick. But there were some moments of sublime comedy, but
none as good as in the other films I saw. And Jim Jarmusch did have a
cameo as the used car salesman. (Sorry Kimmo). There was a sequel which I
never saw, (...go to Moscow?), but I really never thought that this could
be a real band. Good gawd. Scandinavia's answer to Spinal Tap, I guess.

Yeah, Aki & Mika Kaurismaki. They haave made lots of films since the early
80's; some of them really good (especially Aki's work) some of them plain
awful (mostly Mika's).

"
Leningrad Cowboys Go America" isn't actually that bad a film, especially
compared with the sequel "
Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses" which was a piece of
the most boring cinema I have ever experienced...

If somebody wants to find out more about the Kaurismaki brothers and their
films, check out the Kaurismaki web site at

which I am co-maintaining; lots of film reviews and useless trivia there :)

Hey, you're absolutely right about that CJ Bolland maxi. Only I think
that it's not such a bad thing, for I find "

mainly because of the "

Hi

Is there any coments on superswirls debut album 'filter' out there?
I think its a very nice debut and it could be a fresh contender to
the title: best swedish debut album of 96!

It's far better then Jumper and Standards, even better then most of the
releases this year....... Has any one seen their video yet, I haven't,
Superswirls went to london in October over a weekend to film it. They
missed the plane back to Sweden so they had to stay an extra night at the
airport, maybe that's a good story for their next video...

I agree that they are a wonderful band (actually one of my fave
Swedish bands), but somehow I have found the idea of this compilation
not a very good idea, as in my opinion both of their albums are
nothing short of fantastic from the beginning to end and would deserve
to be released in their original format worldwide. And if they are
doing this compilation, why not include "
Elevator" from the pre-album
EP? (Or is it there?)

I think Cardigans did a wise thing with the re-release of "
Life" as
the original album had a couple of less interesting songs. Sadly that
also means that many a people will never discover the beauty of
"
Emmerdale" (my favourite Cardigans album still).

Hi there Tobbe and the rest of you!

I was listening to the album at Pet Sounds earlier today (looking at my
watch, I realize I'm really starting to develop chief-like habits!), and
though it sounded more convincing than I had expected, it still lacked
some. In my mind, the main problem is Mattias' singing. I realize that
some might consider it cool etc., but to my ears it is a bit tired and
too unsecure.

> I think its a very nice debut and it could be a fresh contender to

I could actually resort to using my fists about this one. No, I don't think
it's the best Swedish debut album of the year! But then again I have my own
interests to protect (and I also know that you're not the biggest person
around, Tobbe!) :)

> It's far better then jumper and standards, even better then most of the

Sadly that doesn't say much. The Swedish so-called alternative scene is
really taking a dive. If we look at The Standards (recording for BMG, mind
you), it's plain to see that they got signed WAY too early. That's not
their fault, obviously, but it reflects the climate. That same climate can
ascribe qualities to Petrol that they never could have dreamed about (nor
anyone else outside the business either, really).

Oh my, do I seem disillusioned? Perhaps I should go to bed...

Well, Kimmo said most of what I wanted to say about the apparent
pointlessness of releasing a CD with 12 songs taken from the first two CBJ
albums. I would find it pretty difficult to part with any of the tracks
from either record, let alone 12 of them. Somehow I see a very strong
parallel to what was done with the non-Scandinavian/Japanese versions of
the Cardigans' "
Life". Someone at PolyGram must be short on ideas.

Good point. How could they leave this one out?

Yes it's a proper album. "
Blank Paycheck" was the first album, and there
were to earlier eps: "
La La La" and "the Art of Being Cool".

>Mo (who is going to see the Cardigans, Popsicle and Eggstone in London on

Lucky duck. Eggstone are still one of my favorites. Oh, and what's the
status on that third Eggstone album? Last I heard, they had finally
finished mixing it (for the third time?) and were at last satisfied. Rumor
has it that it's more like "
In San Diego" and way less commercial than the
previous albums.

Yes, it's a proper album, their second one. Here are the CBJ releases
that I know of:

La La La - a five-track CD
The Art of Being Cool - a six-track CD
Blank Paycheck - 1st album
Providing The Atmosphere - second album
Another Moment Follows - a two-track cd-single (the other track is an
exclusive one, does anybody know if it is worth buying the cd?)

jumper???? standards???? hey whats going on here, is the indiescene in
sweden so soulless and streamlined that bubbelgum and indie are one
and the same. a guitar and a fuzzbox does not, and will never equate
indie. and both these bands have more in common with roxette or ace of
base then anything indie.

anyway, as teen sensations jumper do a good job, but so do the spice
girls and take that (and i will defend their value as pop icons), but
indie? give me a break. and the standards were signed way too early,
their sub-par velocity girlish aor lacks in all respects.

but thank god the recent rush of majors jumping for the next teen
indie sensations has, at least for the moment stoppped. EMI has
dropped its bands and even sacked their indie a&r. and the media
climate is almost as hostile as it was a couple of years ago, thank
god. so it's back to the good old indie days where a bunch of realy
good demos and good live shows build reputations on which you actually
could trust.

and with new labels actually being launched and being active, H. Lime
doing a very fine job, and the dorian compilation, it just looks as if
we're all in for better times.

best debut this year? though it's not an album realy, i'd take my hat
off to lousy and their 7"
EP. refreshing, ultimately thrilling and
with an awsome attitude, their micromailorder catalogue is like a
great big popkiss...

And to make that list complete, here are their Japan releases as well:

Cloudberry Jam - 15-track CD (Quattro)
- This is basically the Swedish version of "Blank Paycheck", but with
a few changes:
1) 'Lost In Syncopation' not included
2) 'Scorch', 'Elevator', 'Before Time', 'Kingfisher' bonus tracks.
The first is the bonus track on the "Another Moment Follows" CD5,
and the other three are from "The Art of Being Cool".
3) Different cover/sleeve.

Providing The Atmosphere - 14-track CD (Quattro)
- Basically the Swedish version of "Providing The Atmosphere", but with
a few changes:
1) 'Whatever Happens', 'Could It Be?' bonus tracks.
2) Extremely different cover/sleeve. If you like looking at the band
members, get the Japan version. :-)

They have also appeared on some compilations:

1. North of No South One - 'Are You Happy?', 'Love Song' - NONS CD 1992
2. NONSVOL2 - 'Elevator', 'Twice As Cool' - NONS CD 1996
3. Pop Nation - 'Nothing To Declare' - Beat That! Records CD 1996
4. Speaker & Friends - 'Going Further (Remix '96)' Stockholm Rec. 1996 (Promo)

Upcoming releases - the "Going Further" CD5 (2 track?) and the "Going
Further"
CD compilation (12 track) - both on PolyGram - for imminent
world-wide release.

> Another Moment Follows - a two-track cd-single (the other track is an

Yes, 'Scorch' is actually really really good - and as the single is only
about 25 SEK, it's worth the money. I'm certain that I have heard the
song before somewhere though - and I remember that I asked Jennie about
it some time ago, but I forget what she said. Maybe that it was a re-make
of an old demo song? I think that's what it was.

Well, that's what I can think of right now - though I'm sure I have missed
something. :-)

You know, English sung with a foreign accent is a funny thing, at least for
me. SOmetimes they can add to the charm of the music (eg. Japanese, Spanish
or French accent) but sometimes they can be really annoying.

>IMHO the most interesting bands today are from Finland in fact.

You're too kind... :)

Some comments to Erik's recommendations...

> All Stars: from Nokia, have released a couple of demos so far, that I

They have two demo tapes out; I got the second one a while ago and it is
about a million times better than their first one. Four great songs, mostly
beautiful, airy and tenderly sad.

> Circle: just released the album "Zopalki" on Bad Vugum.

I think it came out already a good while ago, cannot remember exactly when.
They have another album as well, "Meronia", also on Bad Vugum as well as a
healthy pile of 7"'s. Nowadays the most appropriate word to describe their
music might be "
ambient", right?

One thing that shouldn't go without mention about this band is the genius of
their bass player Turo, he's the true king of bass! Just to watch him play
those mindbending bass lines so effortlessly never ceases to amaze me.

> The Pansies: well, I have almost no information at hand about them,

A real claim to fame if I ever knew of one!

Fruit" on Poko Records

I'm no Pansies expert myself either, but it looks like they are still on
Poko here in FInland, at least their second album "
Fancy the Pansies" was
released on that label. They have a deal with some major in Japan though.

> Super: have released two singles, the latest called "
Tempted" on Odor

Well, not exactly...it's going to be recorded around New Year or so...but
they are busy finishing the songs and making demos and stuff. They also had
a song on a compilation on the Japanese label Escalator (along with the
Swedish band Charlots and a bunch of other cool bands from around the world).

Subject: finnish chain vol. 2 ready!

Hi again,

I am happy to announce that I have just finished compiling a sequel to the
mildly popular Finnish Chain Tape "
Northern Lights Shine Bright Tonight".

The new compilation, titled "
And I Wish To Hide In The Sand" features 16
tracks on a 58 minute CD (yes!). Due to public demand, the music included
ranges from the usual twee tra-la-la to slightly noisier and more 'rock'
acts. In other words, there will probably be not many people who will like
more than half of the tracks but there you go.

I am not saying that this is the definitive compilation to update you on
what's happening in the Finnish indie scene, but hopefully it will give you
some idea about some of the bands that have been mentioned on this list
every once and again. There are some big guns like 22-Pistepirkko and a
couple from the 'big in 1998? team.

So, take a look at the band/track listing below and should you wish to join
the chain, send me (solaris@sci.fi) a subscription message with your:

full name
e-mail address
street address

I will send the CD to the first subscriber on December 1st, so act now!

If you are new to the idea of these chains, speak up and Erik will surely
post his informative articles on the list again.

"
And I Wish To Hide In The Sand"
a compilation of Finnish music for the scan-indie mailing list
compiled by Kimmo Saaskilahti (solaris@sci.fi)

All Stars: Eve - from their second demo "
D'mon Everybody"
...beautifully sad, magical, airy guitars painting melancholy and mysterious
landscapes where Meri's deep voice speaks volumes...

Coo: Heavenly Blue - from the EP of the same name
...these guys rock out, but in a dreamy kind of way, effects-heavy guitars
and rollercoaster basslines all around...

Super: Historical Sights - from the "
Tempted" single
...here the beat goes soft and electronique, enhancing the romantic late
August night feel...

Love Handles: Lips - from the "
Fresh!" compilation tape
...acoustic & buzzing electric guitars meet sweet vocal harmonies in a
slightly psychedelic mood...

Homespun: Let's Calm Down - from their "
Fabio Fitness" EP
...so, it's the Finnish Sebadoh, no it's the Finnish Dinosaur Jr, no it's
the Finnish Bear Quartet, no it's the Finnish Homespun...

Larry & The Lefthanded: Moonbase Ball - from the "
Diabolika" CD
...kings of lo-fi pop garage with their manic dancefloor filler, now where
are my 3-D glasses...

Greenhouse AC: Mr Glue Won't Turn Blue - from the "
Doggy Bag" CD
...the missing link between punk and grunge with Iggy Pop's secret son on
the microphone...

The Pansies: Neighbourhood Girl - from the "
Fancy The Pansies" CD
...and you thought that Cardigans sounded like that song in the Lipton TV
commercial...

Wilma: Pahanilmanlintu - from the "
Suuri valkea" CD
...the Finnish version of Garbage or something, this one goes out to Erik
the listmeister...

22-Pistepirkko: Roundabout - from the "
Zipcode" CD
...as if The Troggs had started to produce dance music...

Dada Girl: Sandpit - from the demo tape of the same name
...breathtaking vocals, almost too talented songwriting, soundwise a bit
more laidback and mellow than the band is today; "
Sandpit" is already
referred to as a "
classic" in some places...

Mess: Sun Day - not released
...may I introduce you the Finnish Bettie Serveert (who?), strong female
vocalists and guitarists, unfortunately the song suffers from both poor
production and a low quality tape copy I had; lots of talent shines through
anyway...

Lemonator: Tourist - from the "
EP" EP
...Americanesque powerpop from the band who are about to hit the big time...

Spam: Ugly - from a compilation cd given free with the "
Sue" magazine
...it's funny, it's nerdy, it's stupid, it's charming, and just absurd; but
probably not after the second listen...

Aknestik. Vien sun sydamen pohjoiseen - from the "
Saatiedotuksia
merenkulkijoille" CD
...as usual, airy electric and acoustic guitars in sweet harmony; perhaps a
little happier song than most of theirs, but the trademark melancholy
element is still there somewhere...

Cessna: Wide Awake - not released (yet)
...one of the newest recordings by the band, the song has been compared to
both early Ride and Stone Roses for some reason...

---------------
That's it basically, sorry about the lame and bored descriptions but it's
getting late and I am kind of short on clever ideas at the moment. Hope you
will find the compilation interesting and you will subscribe to the chain.

Hi everybody,
Yes, I know about this,...unfortunately. A guest in Tryck till a few
weeks ago (Tony Zourias) mentioned it when they were reviewing the next
Card. video, Been It. I tend to agree with what he said then , which is
that if the Cardigans wanted to make a dance remix they could have chosen
a less well-known money-maker than Todd Terry. There are a lot of DJs,
one doesn't have to choose mr 'everything but the girl'. That is my
personal opinion, obviously, not the Cardigans... The story is that
Todd Terry came this Summer to Malmoe to the Tambourine Studios and met
the Cardigans there and they decided to make something together then...

If you like rarities and oddities, there is a non-offical dance remix
of Carnival mde in Italy... This one is quite funny.

Regards,
Nicolas

PS the Cardigans Home Page has moved (http://www.gryphon.com/cardigans)
and I am still looking for a host for the mailing list...DS

Subject: Hallo.

Hallo.
I have been on this mailinglist for sometime now but I never introduced
myself. My name is Julian I am 20 years old and I live in.....New Jersey :(.
This is my favourite mailinglist, it is the one that I have been on the
longest. The reason I have not posted here is because I am stuck in the US
and Scan-indie records are quite hard to come by. I enjoy listening and
learning here. My favourite bands are the Cardigans, Eggstone, Cloudberry
Jam, Cinnamon, Wannadies, etc.. mainly because those are the only bands I
have been able to find their records. I have most all the Cardies records
and have had the good fortune to meet and see them perform twice..(they are
the best!)... I am still searching for In San Diego by Eggstone! I have been
to soooo many record shoppes in the US and Canada and no-one has it or can
even order it for me. I have been searching for 2 years now. If anyone knows
a mailorder company that will send Scandinavian records overseas it would be
much appreciated. Better yet if someone would be nice enough to buy it for
me and I'll send them the money or some kind of trade that would be nifty as
well.

Anyway, I would like to get included in the tape chains (all of them, if
possible) so that I can hear all of these bands I have read so much about.
It'll be easier to spend 35usd on a record if I have at least heard the band
first. So wherever the various tape chains are please add my name/address to
the list:
Julian Minervini
150 Monmouth Boulevard
Oceanport, New Jersey
07757-1623, usa.

Tack så mykett. Oh yeh, I also love British indie music like Marion, Ride,
Blur, Stone Roses, Bluetones, dubstar, etc.... Actually, I am starting a
new webzine/ mailinglist for British and Scandinavian indie music, the URL
is http://www.exit109.com/~tog/nowhere.html . Please check it out. :D
Lastly, I also love Swedish Elite League hockey. Very hard to come by infos
here though... Fave player ever Patrik Sundström. :).

Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from some of you soon.

Yaaay! :-) Nice work there Kimmo, and I suspect that's why you have been
hiding the last week or so, right? But, wait a second, why no Russian Love?
I received their new album "
Gala Brutale" today, and I realise that I
have missed out on a really good Finnish band - and the sleeve even has
thanks to Robert Cumming! Hey Robert! :-)

On the other hand - the Swedish Compilation II has not moved an inch since
we talked about it a month ago or something, mostly because I haven't
received replies from the two persons on the list who said they would
help out with the CD burning process?

> Wilma: Pahanilmanlintu - from the "

The Finninsh version of Garbage?! No no, in my ears they're not even close
to Garbage! I'm not sure what to compare them to, but it's definitely not
Garbage.

> Lemonator: Tourist - from the "

> ...Americanesque powerpop from the band who are about to hit the big time...

Ah, got their new EP "
Superb" in the mail today - and I can't make up
my mind if it is better than the "
EP" EP or not - I think I have to
listen to it some more before I can be sure of that. Smokin' powerpop
anyway! Three tracks, none over 2.53. The second song "
I Love Trampoline"
is my pick for favourite on the single - thick and rich sound, with alarming
and phazer effect box guitars like cream on top of the mashed potatoes,
"
pa paaaa" backing vocals, a more mature song, one of those songs you want
to listen to in your car whilst driving far on a sunny summer day. And the
song most similar to their "
EP" EP. Even thoug the title track probably will
be the one played on the radio, because it's got more "
go". A bit like (what
they call it today) punk feel over it. Rattling drums, rock rock rock
guitars, the recognizable Lemonator male duet vocals. "
A song for the kids
to jump to", as they say. There's no Curt Cobain vocals here now though,
which is okay by me, though on the third song "
My Donut Mind", which is a
demo, they use a muffled effect on the vocals here and there, high falsetto
backing vocals, great breaks. I'd like to say that it sounds like some sort
of mix between Naked and Brainpool, and something else I can't put my
finger on.

> Cessna: Wide Awake - not released (yet)

You know, that's something I'd like to know as well. I haven't seen anything
about a support act for them on any of their gigs here in Scandinavia. Even
though it's only two gigs, and they do have material enough to play by

The Contest is now closed, and the winners have been picked out! If you
have not received your prizes already, you will in a few days time!
Lousy wanted to throw in a special extra Second Prize, just because the
title suggestion was so inventive and .. heh, hit something on the spot.
And there are a few extra prizes for third place as well. So, why not
present the winners!

[ 1st Prize ] The Big Lousy Package
Winner: Ludvig Borgne <ludde@kore.lk.se>
Title Suggestion: "
Spite"

Comment from the band: A short and concise title. Simple
and comprehensive. It is just a
fantastic title!!!

[ 2nd Prize ] Lousy 7"
6-song Single released on Sappy (Canada)
Winner: Jens Agren <jensa@loranga.df.lth.se>
Title Suggestion: "Jesper Larsson"

Comment from the band: Brilliant! Though it does crumble
together with the piece of text
"don't even know your name". :)

[ 3rd Prize ] Lousy Promotion Tape + Stickers
Winner: Molly Wilson <lillimae@worldchat.com>
Title Suggestion: "My Mortal Enemy"/"Heather"

Comment from the band: Had the best motive. And, "Heather"
is a great name for a sing, though
not for this one, but still...

Winner: Neil Targett <targett@atcon.com>
Winner: Elin Olson <Elin_Olson@skola.agora.se>
Title Suggestion: "Ignorance Is Bliss"

Comment from the band: Strange, two suggestions for the
same name! But, as it is the name
of an unusual Jellyfish song, we
want to reward them.

Winner: Roderick Affleck <affleck@ug.cs.dal.ca>
Title Suggestion: "Anonymous Animosity"

Comment from the band: Damn clever! But also extremely
hard to pronounce! :-)

There! The winners in the Lousy Contest! Congratulations! And here are
the other title suggestions:

bittersweet, (this is not a) love song, alien thoughts, I'm thinking of you,
beautiful loser, to hate somebody new, love makes me laugh, operator, starch,
for unbeloved unknown, phone-sex, 1-900-EAT-ME!!, calcium, frostbite, OK,
triplicate misadventures of the unknown humanoid, dissing you, untitled,
stupid popular people, girl, my neighbours new dog poisoned the old one,
closeout, good vibrations, magazine grrl.

And of course Lousy would like to thank everyone who participated!

I was up in Oulu in the summer when Kai from Aknestik was checking

words are like now - they were pretty bad then!

Jive with Clive was recorded at Mejeriet in Lund the last Thursday of October.
I was there and I have not much to say more than: Don't miss P3 Live 1/12!
Jive with Clive were great but I do think they should rename their band.
Don't ask me what they sound like, I can't compare them to any other bands,
but I'm sure they're not alone in this genre (I guess it's some sort of pop).
They have a fantastic female singer and the average age in the band is 18.
They have appeared on Musikjournalen Pop twice I believe, and that's about
all I know.
