According to chief@lysator.liu.se:

* By the way, that band, Homespun, sounds like something I would really like.
* One must be able to find at least _some_ info about the label "Hipnose"
* somewhere? Anyone searched the 'net? Anyone want to search the 'net? :-)
* Maybe under "record companies/labels" in the Finnish phone book even?

Well, it was raining outside and I had nothing special to do, so I
made a search and in fact found this from the home page of another
Kouvola-based band Going Public (the enlightened Mr. Rouhento opined
that the debut release of the Hipnose label was a Going Public
release; the catalogue number of the Homespun disc was 002)

Hipnose Records
P.O.BOX 8
45151 Kouvola

Tel: +358 51 3720 601 (Timo Ranta)
+358 40 5570 900 (Jasu)
Fax: +358 51 3115 335

No e-mail address given to the label, but I think you can write to the
one given for Going Public as it seems like that T. Ranta guy is
somehow associated with both GP and Hipnose... The address is

tranta@kylmedia.fi

if you want to check out the Going Public home page, there is a link

Hope this was useful.

According to chief@lysator.liu.se:

* And what about Tr{stocksfestivalen (starts exactly two weeks from now!)?
* Who's going?

If anyone cares, I am seriously thinking about going there (hopefully
with Robert C). It was such a great experience last year!

* Should we make plans? Where to meet

Friday 18.00 by the big tent. In fact, it's such a small area that
after we will learn to recognize who is who (scary), we will be
bumping to each other once in a short while, I should assume.

* what to bring etc?

Bring an extra pullover; I seem to remember the nights were rather
cold last summer. I need to get a new sleeping bag (somebody stole the
bad old one last year (but nothing else to my
astonishment)). Everybody should bring a camera and take lots of happy
shots which we can later scan and show to the rest of the
world. Everybody should bring gifts to each other...Ok, I'll stop now.

The sad thing is that the Tammerfest festival here in Tampere happens
to take place during exactly the same weekend; thus I will miss the
only decent thing happening here the whole summer. Can't have your
cake and eat it too, I know.

Ultima Thule followed by the Mike Flowers Pops! Surreal. Potential

I can really recommend their single debut "Tune In Your Superswirls" which is
really great. The title track is some kind of menacing understated hypnotic
synth indie, and it's really simplistic. In fact it fits pretty nicely with
other simplistic gems from the history of pop music: Jesus, Girl In Black,
I Love You Eddie etc..
And then there's the trip-hop track called "Rock'n'roll" and some dance mixes
of "Tune In Your Superswirls".

Great single. Can't wait for the album.

Hey Roberts,
thanks for posting all the Baltic information! I think it is great to
finally get to hear news from these countries on the list - and that
Madona festival in Latvia sounds extremely interesting! It is just too
bad that it is at the same time as the Trastocksfestivalen in Skelleftea
as I would have loved to be there! Do you know which bands that will play
at that festival by the way?

Well, Ultima Thule ... I know one should not banish or censor music, but
from what I know, this band is a heavily racist band. Mildly said, the
swedish music scene / business does not look at this band with friendly
eyes.

And I agree with Robert regarding the line-up as well. Ultima Thule
followed by Mike Flowers Pops is very surreal indeed.

Yay! I finally get to meet some listies! (well, I'm meeting Jan (d-sunjan))
next week, but he is actually the first list-member that I get to meet
in "real life"!

Heh heh, well, if the amount of people that showed up last year
( = 20.000) was correct, I wouldn't think so. Last year at the
Hultsfred festival, where there were less than 20.000 people, I
never met three friends more than once - and that's when we had
planned to meet at a place and time. Anyway, we could perhaps
make plans and put our tents on the same spot or something? I
am going there with my girlfriend on thursday (18/7) morning -
and we'll probably go to the West Side party downtown Skelleftea
that night. When will the rest of you be there?

Ha ha ha... well, I don't know about the gifts, but I will bring warm
clothes at least. A friend of mine up there told me she needed mittens
last year - and she _lives_ there and has a house she can go to at
night! Warm clothes = at the top of my list. Camera is a must too, I
agree. But how about beer 'n such stuff? Can you go downtown (is it far?)
to the local Systembolaget and buy the stuff, or do I have to bring it
all the way from here? (as they are not selling anything at the festival)

Subject: Re: Superswirls

Hello
Since the interest of Superswirls seem to have grown I thought some info
should be appropriate.

Superswirls are originally from Eskilstuna Sweden, but 4 out of 5 is
living and studying in Uppsala 80 km north of Stockholm.

Line up:
Mattias Axelsson - vocals, guitars
Rikard Sellgren - synthesisers, guitar
Lasse Hellberg - synthesisers
Markus Lind - bass
Ivan Parlov - drums

Superswirls was formed around 1991, and begun playing the local circuit
with lots of shoegezzer wha-wha wha-wha guitars and Indie beats. They
created a buzz with 'a lad in sane' and 'What happens now?', two songs that
appeared on a local promo CD, These songs had a more laid back and dynamic
sound and pop star Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds) loved the sound of it.

After some line up changes and many shows, mostly in Uppsala they took time
out and recorded 'Tune in your superswirls Demo' with local pop- producer
Totte pop and it provided Superswirls with a world wide publishing deal
and they decided to sign with CNR=B4s new pop label Sesame Records.
Their 5 song strong demo tape is said to be the best Demo tape of 95.

In 1996 they have recorded their debut single 'Tune in your superswirls' (a
newer shorter censored version). It was released in mid May and are
currently played on P3 everyday so far.

Superswirls will start demoing songs for their debut CD in mid july and
then spend a month in the studio recording one of the best Swedish releases
in 1996, only taking time out to play at the Emmaboda festival.

The debut album (t.b.a) is scheduled for an October release.

A biography from Air music say=B4s " Superswirls deliver great pop melodies,
twanging tremolo guitars, old school synthesisers, laid back smooth groves
and thumping basses"
I like to add " if you like Stereolab, Spiritualized,
pulp and Blur then Superswirls is what you=B4ve been waiting for"
.

Any questions?

VILSTA FESTIVAL 5/7 1996

It was a very special night, the best bands in Sweden geared up for the job.
The weather wasn't brilliant but good enough for some great music, at least
it didn't rain.

After a one hour delay, Tomas Walhstrom Poetry Show entered the stage with
confidence and mixed poetry with musical illusions, irony and a rolling
sound of funked-up beats, air tight bass and it takes you from a corny
bossa groove through jazz to the much more raw and heavy ending, right
there at the end it's 'Rock poetry And Roll'.

Pain of Salvation just don't get it, their boring Heavy Metal don't cut it
in 1996, they more act and sound like 'Spinal Tap'.

MOL is doing great but are playing far to early in the evening.
This techno duo can push any crowd right through the roof in a club
anytime, their hunched stance giving them the look of a pair of acid-
casualty geeks cooking up the perfect formula for a rave beverage. In a
club they rock the audience like Tyson on angel dust, but tonight it's to
early and it's outdoor on a pop festival.

Superswirls had to pull out in the last minute and didn't played.

Alternative Colours are in a way commercial with their Euro disco, but who
cares!, they stink in my opinion. They got some of the people in the front
to dance and sing for a while but it's clear that everyone is waiting for
Kent and Yvonne.

Yvonne looked fresh and inspiring tonight, the level of emotional and
melodic drama was magical. Yvonne bless us with the same show they played
in Hultsfred. It's a perfect modern pop show most of the time, they open
with two new songs that gets your attention and then the give us 'Wires',
'For Your Pleasure', 'Modern Love' and 'Cut a Smile'.
These songs are tonight very dynamic and lovely, teasing and showing off,
beautiful and tense, when Henric sings ' I wanna be your modern love' we
believe him and adore him for it. The rest of the show delivers another new
song and then guitarist David goes Wild, spitting at the audience and
beating the crap out of 'Veins' and 'Enticed'. When he throws his guitar at
the stage and it goes into feedback in 'Broken Part's we know it's over.
They really need this as much as we love `em.

As Kent slip on stage into the spotlight, we realise why they have sold
over 40 000 copies of the Cd 'Verkligen', They do everything right tonight
and gradually fill the festival site with unbridled excitement, it's a
great Indie show that last just over the hour, playing most of the songs
from the latest record, tonight I only miss ' Ingenting Nagonsin'. Maybe
they try to much to look cool but when Jocke Berg Introduce ' Bla Jeans' he
have got us eating out of their hands. The encore is pure SEX, a cover of
Depeche Mode's 'Stripped' and their top ten hit 'Kram' is F***ing phenomenal.
I can't say I'm a fan, but tonight they're great.

any questions?

Is it worth my while going to see Fireside at the Underworld? What are

Although I never heard Quicksand myself, I've seen in several different
places that Fireside supposedly sound a lot like them. It's sort of
laidback hardcore with catchy melodies

Definitely go see them if you've got the night off, but just don't expect
anything like the twee Cardigans/Cloudberry Jam/Popsicle sound.

I will arrive there at Friday around noon, this time I probably
won't be sleeping in a tent, instead I will crash at a friend's
house. So I won't be at the West Side party unfortunately.
However, compared to how it was last year, it wasn't hard to
find people. Kimmo and Robert found me even without making an
appointment. I think the number of 20,000 were never present
there at the same time, if so, only during the acts late at
night. The area is nowhere close to the one at the Hultsfred
festival.

No problem, the Systembolaget store is within walking distance from the
festival. Though it can be pretty crowded on Friday afternoons.

cheers, Petter.
(Btw, while I'm at it, thanks to Per Långström for selling me a
ticket to Roskilde, I had a great time seeing Tortoise, Sebadoh,
Unsane, Jesus Lizard, Nick Cave, Dirth Three, Neil Young and what
not).

hmm, this will be interesting.. will any swedish venue actually be
interested in booking them or will i be forced to go to norway to
see them.. um, well, since they got a whole half page in pop i
guess i won't have to. there are actually people who read pop and
believe what is written therein. how's that for a change? ;)

and to make up for the positive review salt apparently got in spin,
maybe i should type up the review they got in alternative press.?
they literally gave it the finger.

there are two sides to everything i guess.

per, low on blood-sugar

ps. petter, i am glad you found roskilde worthwhile. hard not to i

Hi Scansters, This is non-music, so I try to keep it short. from August
the 1st to August the 27 th I will spend my summerholliday in sweden.
During the Waterfastival I will stay in Stockholm and maybe a few of you
can recommend me some clubs, concerts, record-shops etc. to visit. Maybe
we could meet personally ( at the popsicle gig ?).

To change the subjet... Don`t send me any of the three tape chains in
August because it would stop the chains for a while. Me and a friend
went to Roskilde. We saw the Cardigans (Nice gig as I think, alot of of
new songs). By the way nice story to tell right with, beside us stood a
young, i guess swedisch, couple, slightly drunken. During Rise&Shine the
girl jumped on her boyfriend and both rolled on the floor nearly shagging.
Well I kow that Nina has a sexy voice ....

We also saw kent. I liked it, though did not`t understand a word.
Well thats it for this time

bye Andreas
P.S. for your suggestions reffering my holiday mail me directly under

I myself will escape to London before and during and after the Water Festival,
but still I can recommend a few record stores:

Pet Sounds, Skanegatan 53, closest U-Bahn is Medborgarplatsen.
Lots of indie and britpop and US low-fi pop, but also ambient/dub/techno

Sound Pollution, Stora Nygatan 18, U-Bahn Gamla Stan (= Old Town).
Best in Stockholm for goth, industrial, hardcore, and metal.

Freak Scene, S:t Eriksgatan 64, U-Bahn S:t Eriksplan.
Outstanding for punk and garage, and lots of vinyl.

There are also many worthwhile second hand stores close to Freak Scene,
like Diamond, Atlas, and Bjarnes. Ask the shop assistant for directions.

As for concerts, look for flyers and posters in the record stores. From
memory, I know that Teddybears, Iggy Pop, and Patti Smith will perform
during the festival. And oh yeah, Glen Branca too, don't miss this man!!

Apparently, at least according to Mikko Paila (on the list), our beloved
band FIDGET will be the opening act for Popsicle at the Water Festival,
and that is not to be missed.

Other bands at the festival I would not want to miss: Suede, Garbage,
Cowboy Junkies and Earthling.
