i thought i'd share my thoughts on what i saw at dalaock this past
weekend..

brick wasn't all too exciting. the sound could have been a lot better and

robert johnson & the punchdrunks were friday's highlight. it was one of
the oddest, yet coolest festival-acts i have ever seen. american 50's
trash-surf along with goofy poses and quirky humour. made everybody in the
audience smile and tap their feet.

as for the rest, jonny polonsky was alright, popsicle played on the
biggest stage which felt a bit odd, and although i didn't get to see
zest i hear they are some good.

According to a usually reliable source, Bizarre, the best (to my
knowledge :) band in Estonia, have a new tape out!! Haven't heard it
yet, therefore I cannot comment on its contents, but I will be very
surprised if we don't get a full scoop soon on this forum from Sami R,
the man in the know. So stay tuned!

Greetings,
I've just joined the list and I'm following Erik's advice and writing
something about myself. I am drawn to this list because I've recently
discovered The Cardigans and Red Sleeping Beauty and I want to learn
more about them and about other great bands in Scandinavia.
I'm a big fan of The Sundays, Cocteau Twins, Ivy (the U.S. Ivy), etc.
I'm a writer and I work for a data communications company. I play
drums when I can.
What other bands should I be aware of? And does anyone have any
advice for finding imports of these recordings in the U.S.?

We have a couple of tape chains going on at the moment; an Icelandic,
a Swedish and a Finnish one at least (is the industrial tape still out
there somewhere?). I suggest you join them; it's an easy way to hear a
number of new bands.
The easiest way to join the tape chain is to post your name & address
on the list and the persons who have the tapes in their possession
will (hopefully) add your info on the list of subscribers. Right?
I wonder if those tapes will never come home again... :)

Yup. It's an 8-track release called "Cafe de Flor" In fact, I had to
make a quick visit to Tallinn just to get my hands on this
long-awaited item (ooer--okay, there were other reasons too) because,
as before, it is a cassette-only release on Tartu's Sally Cinnamon
label, and I'll be damned if I'm ever going to find a copy here in
Finland. I haven't really had the chance to listen to it more closely
yet, but judging by a cursory listen or two, it's very good stuff,
if a bit different from their previous, ingenious "Beautica" tape.
Now, I hope the two of you reading this won't get the wrong idea
when I talk about "cassette releases". Really these should be
considered as proper albums--or mini-albums, perhaps--just as official
as any others released on cd's and such. The sound and recording
quality on "Cafe de Flor" is excellent. The sleeve is printed and very
handsomely laid out. Do not mistake these Estonian cassette release
for demo tapes.
As I mentioned about a year ago (phew! does time fly or what..?)
Bizarre lost their drummer and bassist and consequently took a turn to
a more dance-oriented style, with the addition of Lauri on samplers
and keyboards. A couple of the songs on the tape have a pulsating
house beat (says someone who knows next to nothing about dance music)
and a couple of others groove along to more laid back beats, reminding
me of something like, uh er, trip hop maybe... Plenty of ambient
soundscapes abound elsewhere. The vocals remain mainly in the Slowdive
mode, so I gues it would be fair to say that Bizarre have now come up
with a cool mixture of earlier dreampop and modern dance
influences. Some of the stuff reminded me of Dubstar or St. Etienne,
but more ethereal.
Yeah, well, maybe I should have waited a bit more before trying to
write anything more analytic... The tape should be available from the
Sally Cinnamon address, which I don't have handy right now, but perhaps
I can get back to you on this? These people should be huge.

Got the new West Side compilation "Give Ear!" today - and I have to ask if
I am the only one to discover just how _great_ The Drowners are? Their song
"Upside" on the compilation is _fantastic_! No wonder that GreenTeam are
interested in getting them over the pond. This is a given radio hit - I can
even hear it now, when the song fades out... "you're listening to KRWC and
The Drowners just kicked some major a..."...
But what happened to the Bear Quartet?! HELP! And I understand why Puffin
says that they are an "electronic studio project" nowadays too. I looks
somewhat like all our guitar heroes of the past have gone and made an
A Shrine on us!
I knew that Carpe Wade had changed, but never this much! A bit of the
new wave punk, ska and wannadies-ish pop. I would never have guessed
that this was Carpe Wade.
Anyway, there are plenty of gems on this compilation, including Popundret -
"Time Stops By" (Yay! It is _great_!), Mufflon 5 "All In Flames" (they're
back!), Drowners (Yummy!), Backfisch (well, it was made before they decided
to change their name) "Bless You" (_so_ beautiful!) etc etc, and "new-comers"
Stickboy, The All Janet and Kilmer as well.

Yes, you're absolutely right. It wouldn't be much of a hassle including
Scandinavian / Baltic artists in the, as it is called today, Swedish
bands gig guide, because it is not very often that I find out / learn
of gigs these bands have. I'll think a bit, and make the necessary
changes soon.

I wasn't teasing you! :-) It is pretty hard to describe actually - but
the jazz-twist was gone (you know, the one Nina used to wave her arm to),
and it wasn't as "light" as before either. I didn't record it unfortunately,
as I didn't know it was them - so all this is from memory.
No screaming electric guitars though. :-) I would probably say that it
sounded like an even more mature Cardigans. Something I'm not sure that
I will like. I kind of enjoyed their somewhat naive, fresh scent.
But, there are bands that are perfectly able to take their place these
days, and I don't mean Cinnamon, even though they have their moments.
Sorry for the "light" information, but I'll be back when they play it
again (and I hear it). Or _is_ the CD5 out now!? Anyone?

Are you kidding?! I hope you're not - because I'll be jumping around the
house like a crazy.. um.. something, if this is true! And I second your
opinion, that this is probably the best band in Estonia, mildly said!

Erik S|derstr|m is not going to Tra"stock, sources in Finland reported
yesterday. This has potentially serious consequences for the
Scan-Indie representation at the festival, which will take place this
weekend in Skellefte}.
S|derstr|m himself has been keeping quiet about his decision not to
go, but it's understood that pressure of work is keeping him away.
The Scan-Indie flag will now be borne by Tampere's Kimmo S{{skilahti,
and Stockholm-based expatriate Scot Robert Cumming. Some list members
from Ume} and Lule} are also likely to attend.
As yet it's unclear if S{{skilahti and Cumming, who are planning to
cover Tammerfest in Finland on the same weekend, will be allowed into
the exclusive A West Side Fabrication party at the festival.
Assurances had previously been given by record company supremo and
festival organiser Jocke. S|derstr|m's absence worries Cumming:
-- We were planning to do some interviewing for the next issue of
'Chouette', and now we don't know if we'll be able to meet the stars,
he said.
The festival boasts the very best of Swedish indie, including Bob Hund
and the Wannadies, plus a whole range of West Side bands. Entry is
free. If the weather holds out, and other Scan-indie members turn up,
the weekend could still be a good one, according to Robert Cumming.
-- Somehow we'll just have to survive without Erik. Whatever happens,
we'll have a good time and report back afterwards.

Speaking of Cinnamon, they've been up to some changes lately. Their
nucleus, Jiri and Frida, will continue as Cinnamon, while the rest
of the guys that fleshed out the band for studio sessions and live gigs
(Bjorn - guitar, Manne - bass, Christer - drums) have a new band going,
with the somewhat bizarre name Planet of the Poodles.
They've started doing gigs at small places like Hyndans and Konstfack,
and have completed a demo tape which is in circulation at selected labels.
I heard the tape, and let me just say that there's potential in there...
imagine power pop meshed with the melancholic feel from early Cure albums.
Remember where you heard about them first... :)

Ha ha ha! That was truly a good one, Robert! You guys come up with
everything, don't you?! :-)
But, yes, it is true that I am not able to go to the Tr{stocksfestival
this year. I'm filling in for the root at a company, who said that
he would be back this week when I started, but just the other day,
they told me he had changed his plans, and will not be back before
_next_ week. So they didn't let me take two days off. :-((((
You guys better report back from the festival, you hear! AND DO NOT
MISS Backfish and Bob Hund and Popundret and Penniless People of Bulgaria
and... this makes me so sad.
In any case, because of this "mix up" (as they call it), I will get
time off the whole next week, and will then go to the Lollipop festival,
where fun things will happen (and I'm not just talking about the bands
here :-) - stay tuned!)

There's a band from the town of Huskvarna (just outside Jonkoping, where
The Cardigans come from) called The Wellmeant. I think that the girl singing
in that band sounds pretty much like Harriet Wheeler. Though the group
is not signed by any label, but recently appeared on a compilation CD
called "A Chance To Shine" released by Dorian Records here in Sweden.
The CD contains 20 songs from 20 bands (where only one is signed to a label)
and I definitely recommend it. You might want to check out the review
on the Scandinavian Indie web-pages first though (or let me know, and I
will send the review to you):

just follow Kimmo's advice and...

Does anyone know what to expect from this guy (Glen Branca) these days?
Is he still into the "twenty guitars playing the same chord for forty minutes"
thing? A definite must in that case! (Even though I guess we can't expect to
see Lee Ranaldo or Thurston More in the ensamble.)
Garbage are playing during the Water Festival too, by the way.

You said it, chief! The Swedish industrial tape that I prepared seems to
have got stuck down under in Australia. The guy who has had the tape for
several months by now, doesn't even respond to email anymore, ho hum...

Actually I was not worrying about the tape getting lost, I just meant
that it seems that new people are signing up to those chains all the
time (which is only a good thing!) so it might take a while until
the tape has criss-crossed the world a couple of times.

I just read a review of Branca's album "Symphony no. 9 (L'eve Future)" in Soma.
Apparently here it is not a twenty guitar symphony, rather it is just plain
boring muzak. So I don't know what to expect from the man today. Btw, wasn't

I think we're getting a bit off topic here...
But no, I don't think Ropert Poss ever played with Branca. He did however
play with Rhys Chatham, who was doing stuff similar to Branca's.
Or maybe I'm just mixing things up...
To add some scan-indie content to all this, I might as well say that the
new (well, pretty new at least...) Loosegoats EP is pretty good. I don't
have the first one, but the best song (IMHO) on the new one is appearantly
a rerecording of a song from the first, called "Slut" or something like that.

Yup, it sure is good. But IMHO "Mule Habit" is the best song on it. Actually
I think it's the best Swedish song sung in English I've heard in a long while.
Is the album (small lesbian baseballplayers, isn't it? Now that's a good
title :) as good as the EP?
On the other hand, I really craved some new music so I bought the new
Starmarket EP, haven't never really heard them before, and... well... heavy
metal? Sort of, anyways.

i have yet to hear the new ep, but the previous one, _small lesbian
baseball players_ wasn't really too good imho. like a third league archers
of loaf. buy _icky mettle_ and you'll see what i mean..

yes, the new starmarket one really took some serious listening before "i
got it". it's heavier than the album and isn't as melodic either. but, i
like the new one a lot more mainly becuse the debut felt a little "thin"
or something. but that's just me, so if you find _calender_ too heavy
(rockish even), check out their self-titled album. i think the new ep is
the best they have ever been. i can't wait to see both starmarket *and*
archers at arvika!

They have just released a cd with their last concert ever. Great songs and
sound. Don't miss that one.

I'm glad to hear that someone is going to comment on my Icy tape. No one
has written a thing about it for 3 months now, the actual purpose of the
chain has lost it's purpose. For me, that was to hear what foreigners
think about this Icelandic music. Even bad revews are better than no
revews.
Somehow it seems that the Scan Indians are not interested in Icelandic
music, makes me sad.

When talking about Portland, one shall not forget the King of Noise:
Daniel Menche. He's cranking out some of the harshest music around.
And rumour has it that Diamanda Galas is relocating to Portland too.
And then Bellingham, WA, is just around the corner, where Mono Men and the
mighty Estrus Records hail from.

Be sure not to miss Silvermachine if you go. I've praised them before on the
list and I do it again. Seeing them is like being sucked into a maelstrom,
they grind you down with their rock that owes much to people like Stooges,
Hawkwind, and Bad Moon Rising era Sonic Youth.
Speaking of Nomads, they'll soon be heading back to USA for the Estrus 1996
Invitationals, a tour with the above mentioned Mono Men and other selected
fine bands like the Makers. Gee, is that garage rock heaven or what...?

About this festival, I don't know how many of you out there who know about
it so I thought I'd give you some info;
The festival is held on a smallish field just outside the small town of
Emmaboda. The atmosphere is very relaxed, usually no fences, no security,
no fights, just a lot of friendly people getting together. Usually you can
buy beer, food, tobacco (normal and "strange"... I mean flavoured... ;-) )
in the festival area.
There's no back-stage either. This means artists mingle with people, so if
you want to pester your favourite band, this is your chance.
Sadly I'm unable to attend, as I was last year. Before that I've been there
since 89 or 90. Even played there! (My 15 minutes of fame with a band
called Vapour Trail. We got cut by the ancles by most critics.)
In short - this festival is unlike any other, and if you have a chance to
go there - Just Do It, as they say on TV...

Hello everybody,
yep, I'm back in Tampere safe and sound after the most wonderful
weekend in Skelleftea. In short, the weather was fabulous, the bands
were great, met a lot of nice people (cheers Petter!), shook hands
with a number of popsters and so on and on. You'll get the full report
shortly after Robert is back in Stockholm from his tour of Northern
Finland (last seen in the Kokkola train station getting on a train
heading towards Oulu); he mingled among the stars doing interviews and
taking photos as if he had done it all his life (maybe he has
secretly? :) ).
For me the best bands were without question The Bear Quartet and
Backfish; Cloudberry Jam, Pondicherry, Archers of Loaf, Bob Hund,
Daybehavior, Blissful, Popundret and a good number of others were
great as well. But I won't go into details right now :)

Well, for me one of the main purposes of the chain tape idea was to
let foreigners actually hear some of the music that is happening here
in the Nordic countries so that they can have a better idea of what is
being talked about here. In some ways I understand that people don't
bother reviewing the tape(s), probably because I am such a lazy sod
who is not organized enough or does not have the energy to write a
review of most things :) But you're right, even a bad review is better
than no review.

I got this compilation too (100 SEK at the Trastock festival), so I
can give a couple of offhand comments...

Nah, I don't think it is that excellent. And live they were

Well, I had a chat with Jari Haapalainen and among other things he
said that it's a remix of [some song that had appeared somewhere
previously, I forget which)]. So it is probably not what the next
album will sound like. For the trivia-minded, the song was remixed by
the same person(s) who did the "Freedom Fighters" remix for the
Blissful single "Factory Girl".
The two tracks that I have been playing from this comp since my return
are the Backfish one (they rule!) and the Blissful track which is much
better than anything on the "Am I A Wreck?" EP. Does anybody know if
this song was recorded after that EP or is it just an out-take from
earlier sessions? I am hoping for the former case, as the said EP did
not strike me as great as their previous releases.
There is some other decent stuff on the disc, so I can recommend it to
anybody who wants to check out especially some of the newer signings
to West Side.

I think it's time I say something about that tape I got some weeks ago, the
Swedish tape I mean.
I've been listening to it almost constantly since, and I think that whenever
I hear one of these songs in the future I will think about this summer.
I love that Fidget song and for your information I can say that they will
play at 14.00 this Friday, Scen 2, Lollipop (it couldn't be elsewhere).
I can't mention all my favourites, 'cause then it would be a list of almost
all songs. But Popundret I really like, and the lyrics to Puffin's Hard to
quit I really can relate to. Not that I sit by the computer playing games all
day but I sit here and can't seem to move, it's like glue on the chair
somehow.
There are more things to be said about the tape, and all these songs.
Just not right now, I have to paint my Lollipop t-shirt now and it's such

Yep, I couldn't get into Archers of Loaf that much, they didn't
play much from the icky mettle LP which is the one I've listened
the most to, still I thought they were pretty good.
I thought the Bear Quartet were incredible and I would rank their
performance among the very best ones I've seen. (Not that I've
seen that many shows).
