No idea - I was given this supposedly new URL by the maintainer of the page
in order to update my 'Finnish Indie' page and I thought I'd pass the info here.

Subject: Puffin

I'm putting together my latest order from Mind the Gap and I think that
it's time that I sampled Puffin. I hope that someone can offer some
recommendations as to which record I should start with. The following are
some excerpts from Joerg's e-mails to me. My guess is that I ought to
start with In Red and Yellow or with Soundtrack, with maybe a leaning
toward the latter. Your comments please!

>PUFFIN - Medium cool CDs West Side 5 10,00
> this EP features some of the best pop-songs of this
> Seashells-related band
>PUFFIN - Carnivore CD West Side 16 25,00
> the difficult first album - always melodic, but also with many noisy
> bits. Best comparison might be the Boo Radleys of "Giant Steps" -
> just a lot weirder
>PUFFIN - Soundtrack CD West Side 16 25,00
> some of these songs could also have been recorded for a Seashells
> album while others are a bit too strange - for the adventurous
> listener
>PUFFIN - In red and yellow CD West Side 9 25,00

I lost Joerg's comments on the last one.

In case anyone is wondering, the first number is the number of tracks, the
second number is the price in DM (excluding postage). Not that this will
be of too much use (at least as far as Puffin is concerned, that is) to
everyone in Sweden on the list, but Joerg deserves a plug for doing what he
does. Which is get independent releases from around the world and
distribute them out of his home. He can be reached at:

Alexander

I'd go for Carnivore first. It's IMHO far better than the others, although
In Red And In Yellow has started to grow on me recently.
Carnivore is probably one of my 2-3 favourite Swedish records of all time.

Scandinavian Indie Review: With this amount of songs and all from
different bands, it is impossible to write a review for every song. That's
why I have picked out my personal five favorites and the compilation as a
whole for this review. It is kind of obvious which two bands I have
selected at the top - _Aquadays_ and _Shallow Soundwave_ of course!

_Aquadays_ "June", here in a re-recording where the vocals are somewhat
loud, compared to earlier recordings where the guitars were in focus. Though
it is impossible not to love this! When I come to "June" after seven tracks,
I relax and lean back, to float away with the beautiful, clean, soothing
vocals and swirly, dreamy guitars. This is the band that actually catched the
breeze, and I thank my lucky star that they did! I give them four and a half
*Slowdive* stars (out of five, where five = Slowdive). (More info on the
Aquadays Homepage: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/aquadays.html).

_Shallow Soundwave_ has got the "hardest" track on the compilation, but
I feel it's a good song to end it with. You have read my review of "Hyper"
before, and you know how much I raved about it then. Well, I can say that
nothing has changed. I am still amazed by how good this song is - such
fantastic vocals together with roaring, alarming and thunderous guitars
makes me shiver with pleasure. It is hideous that we have to wait until
the end of August for their new demo! Three *Cocteau Twins* stars for
the vocals and four *My Bloody Valentine*s for the music. (More info on the
Shallow Soundwave Homepage: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/shallow.html)

_The Wellmeant_ from Huskvarna is my third choice. I have had the pleasure
of hearing this band a couple of years ago, when their music consisted
mostly of guitar walls. And you know that I like that. Today they have
added female vocals, and their music is more of the soft pop kind. A big
risk to take when _The Cardigans_ are so close musically and (were)
geographically that one is bound to think of them when a band in this genre
comes from almost the same city. But I feel that The Wellmeant has succeeded
to avoid much of this hazard, especially with the female vocals that
gives _Harriet Wheeler_ and _The Sundays_ yet another reason to make another
album. Though I wish the guitar walls were still there (but I always do,
don't I?). That is four *Harriet Wheeler* stars.

_Dune_ serves nice easy listening pop with acoustic guitars, drums and
a transverse flute. Though it might sound simple, it is really captivating.
Some of it must be credited to their female singer, because she has got a
strong voice throughout the whole song, singing high or low tunes. I come
to think of _Pineforest Crunch_, especially from the _Harry Lime_
compilation CD "In The Limelight" when listening to this song. Though I
don't mean that in a bad way, only that I think that the female vocals
ought to be accompanied by male vocals from time to time. Yet, they receive
three *Pineforest Crunch* stars for "As She Lies Down".

_aBLe_ is another well-known band on the demo review pages. Their mix
of electric guitar walls with a whining lap steel guitar, strong male and
light female vocals.. It is a perfect concept! They have got their own
sound, and what's even better, it sounds great! It is no wonder that this
band is signed today (_Harry Lime_) - they have recorded their debut album
which is set for release in August. We'll be treated to some great autumn
pop songs, let me tell you! Five *aBLe* stars for "I Was So In Love"!

Other bands I would like to mention includes _Fanscene_ who's sound
I'd like to describe as a rock'n'roll *Brainpool*, and that means that I
thoroughly enjoy "Occupying My Mind".

_Grape_ starts off sounding just like *Green Day* (!) but fortunately
it gets better. The duet male vocals are great, and the production is
an extremely professional one, though it is not quite my cup of tea.

_The Immediates_' "Pop Girl" has apparently been played on the national
radio a lot lately. Distorted vocals, trumpets and (always present) electric
guitars. They win the lyrics award with: "She's in love with a Britpop star
who doesn't know she exists, giant posters on the wall makes her father
pissed, no matter what they say, she's my pop girl."

_Blue Sunday_ actually sounds somewhat like a really early *Suredo*, and
_In A Spring_ has got an early *Bear Quartet* sound.

In the class for incredibly addictive female vocals, _Androgyne_ wins by
a mile. This girl really puts her soul into it. Screaming, extending her
pronunciation in unknown directions, including a finnish accent and
whatnot! I actually didn't like the song the first times I heard it, but
it grew on me, and now I consider it to be one of the better tracks on the
compilation. That is usually a good sign as well. Their sound? Well..
unreal? I want to hear more from this band!

The compilation as a whole is definitely worth every cent! I would recommend
it it even if it only contained the five "top bands" listed above. Now, you
get a whole bunch of great bands and songs in addition! Though it is true
that there are a couple of low-water marks... one kind of expects that
from a compilation. I dare you to name one that doesn't!

No idea. Call Amy at CNR and ask her. She has a lot to do with promotion of
records released on Sesame. (Mismates recently saw the bad points in signing
to a 'commercial' label with a small indie section, when they were featured
in one of CNR's ads together with ... TONE NORUM! They weren't too happy
about that.)

I'm not sure if this has been said on the list before, but Puffin does
not exist as a band anymore. These days, "Puffin" is only an "electronic
studio project", and will apparently never play live. They have also ended
their contract with A West Side Fabrication.

So it might be wise to get them Puffin records while they last...

hopefully go well. :-) Thanks!

Ha ha ha! That _is_ a funny story. Guess that's what one has to expect
from a larger label, though it is a bit unconsiderate of CNR I think.

Nice to see at least one really good band included in the list, but it seems
a bit odd to include Aknestik and Weezer in the same bunch. It would
be nice to aim for a truly pan-Nordic/Baltic list and keep the
non-Scan stuff separate. I know there are good reasons for scan-indie
being a bit Swedocentric, but, well, you know what I mean...

Robert, off on safari soon :)

Subject: Cardigans new single on the radio today!

Well, they played a song from the new Cardigans single "Love Fools" on
the Swedish national radio today - is that one already released? Last
I heard it would be released in August!

Anyway, my impression of the song was that it sounded like Nina with
another band - I really had to hear what they said after the song to
be sure that it really _was_ The Cardigans.
