Subject: Information...
I'll soon be going away a couple of days (easter holidays), which
includes the Smashing Pumpkins/Filter concert in Stockholm and
the Fidget/Ocean Colour Scene showcase in Stockholm, and will
probably not be able to add/remove/update Scandinavian Indie things
during that time - you know the drill by now. :-)
But, I will be here (hope) some of the days (passing through) and
will check my e-mail, so if it's important, I'll take care of it.
-----------
Second - I know that some of you are wondering where the Fidget
interview is? Well, the interview became an article _and_ and
interview, and a couple of magazines have expressed interest in
publishing it, so I'm laying low about sending it out on the
list or putting it up on the WWW before a decision is made. I
hope I'll be able to send it out pretty soon.

Scandinavian Indie SELECTED NEWS Scandinavian Indie
April 3rd, 1996
by Erik S|derstr|m (chief@lysator.liu.se)
"Remember where you heard it first"
Contents:
aBLe, Anders N. Productions, Beat Butchers Contest, Busty, Fly, Lousy,
Roskilde 96, Salt, Scandinavian Indie Contest, Shallow, Soundtrack Of Our
Lives, Surreal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
aBLe - (H.Lime) plans to call their forthcoming album "Prestigeless Love
Sounds" or "...Lovesounds", just like their previous demo. "It fits
so well together with what we like to do, and I sing those words
in the song '& A Way To End This Life' as well", says Johan Gille.
The band is the opening act for A Shrine at Herrgar'n in Linkoping
on April 18th. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Anders N. Productions - is a new booking agency, that recently started in
Uppsala. And as a private alternative to the arrogant
giants, they are now busy contacting bands and
venues. Behind the agency, we find Anders Nilsson
(guitar in aBLe) and Magnus Skarbo (vocals/guitar
in Blake Carringtons) with their wide net of
contacts. At the moment, they handle Sonic Surf City,
Honeymoons, aBLe, Blake Carringtons, Fanscene and
King Here After, with more on the way. Interested
bands/venues can contact Anders at +46-18-100506
or Magnus at +46-18-260132.

Beat Butchers - 1996 Promo WWW contest is over, and the winners are:
Ludde Berntsson, Haninge
Johan Helmstad, Gothenburg
P{r H{ggblad, Uppsala
J|rgen J|r{lv, Sundbyberg
Mattias Kling, Norrk|ping
Leif Lindgren, G{vle
H}kan Lindstr|m, V{ster}s

Tyrone Lundgren, Hofors
Tor Luttropp, Bromma
Jimmy Nilsson, Karlstad
Magnus Nord, \rebro
M}rten Sahlen, Stockholm
Brad Samuelson, San Francisco, US
If you're on the list above, there's a copy of the 1996 Promo
in the mail for you. Expect it within a week. Congratulations!
(Source: Beat Butchers, Scandinavian Indie)
Busty - fronted by Ulf Lundell's son Kalle have released an EP, which, if
I may say so, is brilliant! Full of guitar-walls, a bit of limping
vocals, but not in the old Broder Daniel school, fortunately. They
have also made a video to the song "Lovestreamed", that got a good
review on Z-Tv's "Tryck Till" last week.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie, Z-Tv)
Lousy - will play together with Fly (the ex-members from Easy) at Chalmers
in Gothenburg April 13th, 1996. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Roskilde - festival 96 adds yet another mind-boggling name to their list
of artists: _Neil Young & Crazy Horse_. Also, swedish group
_Kent_ has been added. Tickets are on sale now.
(Source: Roskilde Information, Scandinavian Indie)
Salt - (MVG/Island) will appear on the soundtrack to the movie "Mission:
Impossible" starring Tom Cruise, with the song "So". "So" is also
their forthcoming second US single, to be released on April 29th.
A video to the song will be shot in New York City starting April
14th. From April 18th to May 5th, Salt is back on the road in the
US again. This time they have the middle slot between Girls Against
Boys and Edsel. The tour starts in Baltimore, goes down the east
coast, crosses the country, and goes up the west coast to end in
San Francisco (see tour date list below). Nine days later, Salt will
start up again in New Orleans May 14 with Seven Mary Three and tour
through June 20th. They will again be playing the middle slot - the
opening act is Poe. This is going to be a bigger tour, playing in
houses 1500 - 3000 capacity with a few big radio festivals (20,000
- 50,000 persons) along the way. It will cover the entire US except
for the northeast. That tour date list will be posted here soon.

Scandinavian Indie - secret Web-page contest is over, and the two winners are:
Eric Ekwall, Stockholm
Johan Helmstad, Gothenburg
You will receive the special limited edition Scandinavian
Indie t-shirt in the mail in about two weeks (the easter
holidays messes up my schedule). Congratulations!
Due to the fact that only 8 people found the hidden
link to the page, this kind of contest will not be
repeated. Stay tuned for a new contest in May!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Shallow - have finally changed their name, due to the number of bands with
the same name, which has been discussed a lot here earlier. Their
new name is "Shallow Soundwave". Recently they received a "5++"
review for their demo in Goteborgs Posten's friday edition "Aveny",
where the highest score usually is "5". The reviewer, Magnus
Johansson wrote that it was the best demo he had heard, ever.
They also got a pretty good review in british Melody Maker,
where they called them "fairly mesmeric" and compared them to
Curve and Spiritualized. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Soundtrack of our Lives - (Telegram) former Union Carbide, have been signed
to.. that's right, Telegram. The band will release
an EP in May-June. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Surreal - correction: the band will _not_ release a demo with the newly
recorded songs, but a record with the title: "Friends of Soap
and Water". Release date is set to: April 30th, 1996.

I was thinking.. Cloudberry Jam, Fireside, Kent and Puffin (who have
changed their style remarkably...) have all released new albums since
we voted.. Then there are "new" bands like Shallow Soundwave and Fidget
for example, that _I_ think no one should miss. Does anyone want to
change their vote(s) now? Are we to do the whole thing from scratch
again?

Subject: Re: tape - Swedish Tape (part 2)
If no one wants to change their vote(s), this is what the results would
look like:
No votes for the following (which means I have selected the songs myself):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aquadays -> * Autumn Swirl (but I wanted to add the whole demo tape)
Blissful -> * To Freshville
Loosegoats -> * Small Planet
Lousy -> * Bug (if they let me that is?)
Melony -> * Mirror On The Freeway
Mouth -> * Cracks
And the following are definite:
-------------------------------
Bob Hund -> - 15 Ar Bakat Och 15 Ar Framat
Cloudberry Jam -> * Elevator
Fireside -> * Al Tonno Q
Hardy Nilsson -> - Det Blir Inte Battre
Honey Is Cool -> * Georgia
Kent -> * Kram
Mazarine Street -> - Get It On
Puffin -> * While You're Gone
Salt -> * Honour Me
Smash Hit Wonders -> - Sell It To Spielberg
This Perfect Day -> - Headache
And we have to decide on which of the following we are going to select:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bear Quartet -> - Blizzard
* Carsick
* One Final, Sandi
Cardigans -> - Black letter day
- Celia Inside
* Gordons Gardenparty
Eggstone -> - Have You Seen Mary
- My Trumpets
Red Sleeping Beauty -> - ? <------ I haven't even heard them!
Popsicle -> * A Song Called Liberty
- Blow Up
* Diving Bell
* Hey Princess
* Make Up
- Not Forever
- Power Ballad #1 <---- (Kimmo got my CD5.. :-))
- Slow
* Soul Laquer Drug
* Sunkissed
Wannadies -> - My Hometown
* Never Killed Anyone
Yvonne -> * Drifter
- Frozen
- the demo songs from that fanzine
(a '*' marks a song that I have in my record/demo/tape collection, and
a '-' marks a song that I don't have - ie. someone will have to
send me a copy of the song selected in order to get it on the
compilation tape - sorry about that, but who owns _everything_?)
Now, lets just decide what to do!

Scandinavian Indie DEMO REVIEW Scandinavian Indie
April 4th, 1996
by Erik S|derstr|m (chief@lysator.liu.se)
"Never paid, always honest."
Contents:
Fidget (re-posted and somewhat changed due to some very silly errors and
an important word missing in the old version)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fidget - "Semi-Naked", March 1996, Time: 11.15
1. Semi-Naked
2. Stop Losing
3. Hoovering Away
4. Teddy
Scandinavian Indie Review:
It is really hard not to write a good review to this demo. It would be
better to just surrender and say that it is utterly fantastic, and that it
is no wonder that seven or eight record labels called them up the same day
they received it in the mail. Nina Natri's voice is so appealing, special
and beautiful. Sometimes in what could be described as a finnish accent.
Climbing high mountains, just to fall down into a crack the next second.
It sounds so honest, and it _is_ so honest. I can not think of anyone that
would not fall in love with it.
And the music. What can really be said about drifting, slow, effect-boxed
electric guitars that just goes on forever and ever, and then they turn into
alarming, screaming walls of sturdy concrete when you think you are safe?
And what can you say about "Stop Losing" that starts like a "Svensktoppen"
song, but evolves into a nasty guitar-filled monster, just like the one you
always thought was hiding under your bed? It even ends with Nina purring
like a cat!
And when I hear a few lines to "Hoovering Away", everything is totally clear
to me; "I am hoovering you away 'cos, I can't stand you around me no more. I
am hoovering you away 'cos, frankly I don't know if I should give a damn
anymore." Fidget will hoover away! Everything and everyone that stands in
their way of conquering the world. On their way up in the sky of successful
bands. And for me it is too soon! Though I hope they will stay in touch with
us down here.

hello there,
Thought I'd drop in some news excerpts about Finnish summer festivals:
Lush were supposed to play at Provinssirock (in Seinajoki) but they
cancelled %( ...instead they are heading for a US tour.
Blur and Pulp will appear on second day (if memory serves) of the
Ruisrock festival (in Turku).
Those are perhaps the most interesting bands that have been confirmed
so far... you can get the latest info on WWW from the url:
http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~latvis/festivals/index.html
I've got a link to that place on my 'Finnish Indie' page at:

and I think Erik has got a link to that page somewhere on the
Scan-Indie pages... it's all interconnected, you know...

couldn't we add fidget to the tape, pleeeeease. that would be just
wonderful. besides aquadays, that's the demo-band that seems to be the
best. (nina natri are also responsible for this very good fanzine
'razzmatazz', but i guess you already knew that. anyway, it really is a
fine fanzine.)

i don't know about drifter, but frozen is better than a big part of
yvonne's cd. the whole ep (which contains "frozen", "...in grief" and
"systematic") is in fact way better (imho).
when will their new single be released?

decided to cancel their Tampere gig a couple of weeks ago... (they are

hmm, the canadian version was forced to changed their name too, due to
this problem. they're called "north dakota" these days, but i doubt they
have gotten any better. hmm, i wonder who the third band was who made
these other two bands change their names? uh, i guess it doesn't matter..
the third band probably had a bunch of dick-sucking lawers on some major
label to back them up..
.per
bitter today? uh-huh, but still listening to jawbox's "for your own
special sweetheart". one of the best albums of '94.
ps. zest rocks! ;)

Scandinavian Indie Review:
Australian bands are pretty well-known in Sweden, ever since the glory days
of, for example, Midnight Oil and INXS a few years ago. Though this new act,
Ice Jupiter Groove, is probably not that known to the swedish audience.
Described by Sean Lee (vocals & electric guitar) as "commercial synth/guitar/
rock feel, with good hooks and melodies", I can not but agree. It is exactly
what it is. Somewhat following in the steps of INXS, but I feel the most
accurate comparison would be Simple Minds. That is to say that this is a high
class rock act with everything that makes it tick.
A piano makes it all sound like a fresh clear and sunny day. Beautiful
floating synthesizer sounds and electric guitar riffs backing up Sean's voice
as he sings, and he sings really well. It made me wonder if he might have had
a career in another band, previous to IJG? His voice is extremely confident,
and I do not think it can sound more professional than this. To make it
clear; In the school of Jim Kerr, Sean would be an A-grade student. And it is
especially evident in "Big Blue" but even more so in "Healing", that is easily
mistaken for a Simple Minds song. The music creating that atmosphere that was
previously only regarded as theirs alone. That almost whispering voice, always
advancing towards higher grounds, like it was made for arena concerts. And
with his brother Brett Lee (keyboard, rhythm programs, vocals) backing him up,
it can not fail.
The music still has got that "australian" feeling over it, you know? But I
thought about that for a while, and figured that if I did not know their
origins, I might have placed them in the UK/Ireland area of the world as
well. I am a Simple Minds buff, and have been ever since I first heard
"Don't You (Forget About Me)" when I was fourteen years old, and in that
sense this is right up my alley. Easy, clear and professionally arranged
songs that I can bet all my money on that you will hear it on the swedish
radio. Soon. They are getting airplay in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Brazil,
Germany, Belgium and some other European countries, so I am pretty confident
about that.

this should work (at least in sweden):
put in 30 SEK + money for sending the fanzine to you at PG(PostGiro):
RAZZMATAZZ c/o Lars Nordgren 4675952-8
i don't know if it works but that's the way they describe it in the fanzine.
(i maybe forgot to say that razzmatazz is written in swedish...)

Although I hope to be on the tape pipeline, I never voted because I want to
hear all things that I know nothing about. With that in mind, I think it
would be great to put the emphasis on demos/new stuff etc.
I will make this short suggestion though, regarding Red Sleeping Beauty
about whom relatively few people on this list seem to be informed. I would
recommend starting with the new 8 song CD, "Bedroom", on Marsh Marigold.
"Pop Song" or "Selfish" would probably be good bets for the tape. (You can
get the disc from Joerg Winzer's Mind the Gap Mailorder in Germany:
<1winzer@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>). Or my favorite: "Her Favourite
Clich=E9" from the EuroPop 7" compilation on Siesta. Or maybe Erik should
bug our friend Keisuke from Japan for a copy of his "top of the pops" ep,
which also features some fine tunes.

Yeah, i'm sad about this. Apparently, they didn't get enough commercials,
so they changed their profile. Stupid move, i think.
Now it sucks a lot. This used to be the only listenable radio channel in
Sweden, and now it's "gone".
How shall i wake up in the mornings, with no bandit on my clock-radio?!

On Saturday I saw a sticker stuck to a Bankomat on Drottninggatan that
said 'FUCK SWEDISH BANDIT' on it...

Hmm, it's not even as if you have Tomas Tengby as an alternative any
more. Become a night owl, and wake up to Musikjournalen instead...
Actually, I notice that Bandit 105punkt5 haven't bothered to change
the station's home page (http://www.pi.se/bandit/) one
little bit. So presumably you can write and complain still to
bandit@pi.se. They could do with a new slogan, say 'Radio in Sweden
sucks. Nu suger vi också'....
Robert, P3-kille anyway

or. you could just walk into any old hardware store and pick up one of
them "timers" that you just plug right in the friggin' wall along with
the cord to you stereo and off to sleep you go and voila! with a big
smile on your face you are waking up to unsane the next morning..!!!
mmm.. yum.
.per, listening to unsane. duh.
ps. as i already mentioned unsane twice i might as well tell you all that
they are playing in stockholm on the 29th (i think). that's the second time
in less than six months and if you missed them in november you should
definitely go see them this time. they made entombed look like a bunch of
14-year olds and they are the hardest rocking band you'll ever see live.
promise.

Surprise!
I didn't know that the tape was finally on the move, but here it is in my
mailbox this evening. Kimmo has outdone himself. How did I get to be the
lucky first person on the list?
Anyway, just so that everyone knows: there are 15 stops left on the chain.
4 more in the US (With your permission, I'm going to change the order of
the stations in the US so that the tape only has to make the trip between
the West and East coasts once); 1 stop in London, then on to everyone else
in Sweden. Your guess is as good as mine as to how long the trip will
take. I'll do right and send it along tomorrow.
By the way, the tape is 100 minutes long, which in my case meant an
unexpected trip to the store tonight (normally I only keep 90 minute tapes
around).
The title of Kimmo's song, "Cardamon Kiss", is beautiful... (reminds me of
the name I used to do tapes under in the mid/late 80s).
Bravo!

Some info about swedish bands in UK:
THE WANNADIES re-released "You And Me Song" on monday the 8th of April. The
CD-single features three new recordings; "Everybody Loves Me", "I Like You
A LaLaLaLa Lot" and a brilliant easy listening version of "You And Me
Song". The other new songs are rather poor. As usual, a nice cover by
LaLaLaLars Sundh and Irmelie Krekin. A lovely numbered version of dark
purple vinyl is also available (4000) [Louise of Sleeper picked "You And Me
Song" as single of the week in MM two weeks ago].
SALT's "Ausculate" has been picked by Our Price (a retail record chain) as
"recommended" and is available at a low introduction price (£9.99).
CARDIGANS + POPSICLE + ? are playing London Astoria the 11th of April. Must
be a good one (10 quid).

more negative record review in my life...

Listening to the excellent post-rock album "Millions living
