Hey it's me again!
Yes, your nuisance-a-go-go Jan the man is back on the list. I went to the
Bob Hund gigs at Studion this weekend (one on sat + one on sun), and i can
tell you: it's great that they are still going strong.
For those unfamiliar with BH: they've been away from the live scene for
almost a year now, recording stuff, and us fans have been longing the shit
out of us to see them again.
Every gig is a pure kick of energy, and the last ones were no exceptions.
although they came up with a completely new setlist (only four "old" songs,
the rest previously unheard), they caught the audience pretty well.
BH follow their tradition of having real weird titles to their songs, new
tracks were: Indianernas Park, Indie Folk=F6l (version of IP), Reinkarnerad
Igen, H{r ska sk}pet st} gubbj{vel!, Dusseldorf, Plankton, Dubbel Tvekan,
N}got M}ste G|ras, and a few more.
N}got M}ste G|ras is sort of a re-make of Han Gillade Sk{mt, another
unreleased masterpiece that they used to play live in 94. the guitars on
this one is just unbelievable. I really hope that they will dig up HGS as
well, the lyrics are about Ian Curtis of Joy Division and makes me cry
every time i hear it.
On Reinkarnerad Igen the rare occasion appeared that Johnny Essing and
Conny Nimmersj| swapped places. It's astonishing, since i didn't think
Johnny could stand up and play guitar at the same time. On _all_ previous
gigs he has been seated on a chair. And even the bassplayer Mats grabbed a
guitar, so they were three playing at the same time. A magic moment in the
history of BH.
OK, gigs coming in Stockholm: Olle Ljungstrom Studion 8+9 may
Silverbullet + Sobsister Studion (10?) may, not sure about the date.
I also got the full booking list from BH:s manager, so if there's anyone
out there wanting to go, just mail me. Not gigs outside Sweden yet, though.

AKNESTIK: Sa"a"tiedotuksia merenkulkijoille (The Shipping Forecast)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I was in Turku last weekend, and there it was, one minute
sitting on the shelf in a record shop, the next paid for and in my
sweaty expectant hands. Aknestik's new one, the one with the
impossible name. But those of you who live outside Finland may not
know who I'm on about.
Aknestik, also known as The Four Curlyheads from the Sea, are a bunch
cheery blokes from near Oulu in northern Finland, who've been playing
together for 11 years now. They started as part of Finland's (by all
accounts impressive) punk movement, and you can still hear some echoes
of that time on this album. Although over the last five years they've
honed a familiar, guitar-based, indie-type sound, you get the
impression they didn't get there by listening to the usual catalogue
of influences. Nordic schlager, for instance, is a strong presence in
Aknestik's music (in fact they did a whole album of Finnish schlager
covers a couple of years back). For me they combine a whole range of
pop, indie and rock'n'roll sensibilities in a way that's reminiscent
of Blur, if not quite so ambitious. Musically, Aknestik don't reach
the heights of Britpop, but then that's not really what they're about.
'The Shipping Forecast' is a collection of pop songs, very much in the
spirit of 1994's over-long but wonderful 'Onni'. The best music here
is great -- the joyous 'Hellemaa' (Scorcherland), 'Poutaa' (Clear
weather) and the bisexual punk vignette `Mina" Mikko ja Tiina' (Me,
Mike and Tina) are my favourites -- but maybe doesn't quite match up
to the heights of 'Onni'. Lyrically, though, Aknestik are on top
form. The album still has the melancholy of its predecessors, but
it's a coastal summer melncholy, and the nights are short. Close your
eyes and it's late May on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia, and maybe
this year you can convince your beloved to come up from the city...
The spring's very short up north
Here, your heart's restless
it won't make its nest in the south
I'm taking your heart north
It always seems sad to me that bands who have the courage to make
great pop music in their own language, rather than English, are doomed
never to be heard anywhere else but their homeland. Well, maybe Kent
and Bob Hund can extend their tentacles into Nordic places beyond
Sweden, but it seems that Aknestik are stuck being Finland's best-kept
secret. Well, I've got my copy. And I'm only a phonecall away from a
boat ticket to Turku to see them live in two weeks' time...

Subject: Bob hund: new EP, live in Stockholm, etc
Just quickly... for those who don't know, the long-awaited new Bob
Hund EP is out, it's called 'Ist{llet f|r musik: f|rvirring' (Instead
of music: confusion), and has three other new tracks on it, including
the live favourite 'Min trampolin' (My trampoline; is it my
imagination or is that Jonas doing the vocals?). It's quite an
amazing little record, very uncompromisingly Bob Hund. Spare, raw,
melodic, but definitely not the most accessible stuff they've done.
As usual it's difficult to draw comparisons with any other band, but I
thought I heard a bit more late-seventies punk and a bit more
Stereolabby twiddling than I did in their old stuff. But I'm
clutching at straws. Either way, it's quite brilliant.
Live last Saturday in Stockholm they were even better. This year's
crop of new songs are quite breathtaking -- you really get the feeling
with BH that no one else is ever going to sound like this, ever. Go
and see them. You _owe_ it to yourself...
Robert
PS Thomas said that a full-length album will be coming out in the
autumn. Not a moment too soon, either...
PPS They've also been interviewed by Benno. But maybe you already
knew that.
PPPS I've now got my English translations page going again, and it
now includes 'Ist{llet f|r musik: f|rvirring' as well. The URL is

Hmm, live normally Tomas sings this, but then Jonas is good on backing
vocals, so why couldn't he?! I'll have a closer listen to the actual
record.

Agree! But it takes some time for the songs to get to you. I've been
listening to the livetapes, rolling in my walkman constantly since the gig,
and slowly they're coming to me.
I still think "N}nting m}ste goras" is awesome, due to the guitar part from
"Han gillade sk{mt". "Reinkarnerad precis som forut" is a very pure song,
not as noisy as the rest, with thoughtful lyrics.

Yup! This was confirmed by their manager too. Although you never know...

Hi all!
Just came back from the Popsicle gig at Kungstr{dg}rden, Stockholm. This
was at the left party showcase demonstration, a suitable surrounding for a
band like P.
Remember Fredrik wore a "eat the rich" t-shirt at the Handels (Buissness
University of Stockholm) gig a month ago. :)
Anyway, they played a new song! It's sung by Andreas in a sort of "talking"
way, almost rap-style. Quite unusual from their normal singing.
Otherwise, it was a normal gig. I noted how welldressed they were, no
t-shirts this time. The weather was fine, and the audience was _huge_,
Kungstr{dg}rden was filled all the way up to Hamngatan.
As usual, Fredrik was ironic between the songs. He introduced "Use My Name"
and said "det betyder Anv{nd Mitt Namn p} svenska" :) Very funny!
Apart from that, they did Speed It Up, Not Forever, and a few others from
the latest album. Oh, and an excellent version of Third Opinion, i always
love the long instrumental part that build up this song. Give it a listen,
in a way it's different from the more noisy stuff, very calm, atmospheric.
Unrelated: i also saw an old guy with a real soviet union flag at the gig!
Popsicle fan?
They're playing 8 may at Gr=F6na Lund, Stockholm. Don't miss'em, for it will
be the last gig in town for a while.
Yours,
Jan Sundstrom

"Remember where you heard it first"
Contents:
Bazooka!, Kent, Roskilde Festival, Salt, Shallow Soundwave, Velvet Belly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bazooka! - (Roligan) from Gothenburg have recorded a video to their
forthcoming new single "Shower Love". The video shows the band
playing in a naked white bathroom and is directed by Nike Lindblom,
who made Mouth's video to "Hole Of Your Head" among others. This
is the band's third video. A new album, produced by Chips (from
Sator), called "First Floor, Second Skin" will be released on May
17th. (Source: ZTV Nytt)
Kent - (BMG) are in trouble. Three members of the band have been charged
for assault at Str|mstad Police Department. Reports say that two
youngsters that hung around in Kent's hotel-room at Hotel Laholmen
after a gig in said city, refused to leave when the band asked them
to. The whole thing ended in a fight where one of the youngsters
got his front-teeth kicked out and the other was thrown down some
stairs. The three members have been questioned by the police. Their
statements reveal that they all plead not guilty to the charges.
(Source: ZTV Nytt)
Roskilde Festival - is sold out. On April 29th, all the 90.000 tickets had
been sold in advance. And this at a time when they have
only announced 1/3 of the artists appearing. No tickets
will be available at the gates, unless you're between
10 - 13 years old, and going together with an adult.
(Source: Roskilde Festival Information)
Salt - (MVG/Island) release a new version of the video to "Honour Me",
re-edited by the video commissioner at Island Records in the US.
Reportedly, it is said to be "way better" than the older one.
Right now, the band is touring the US together with Seven Mary
Three and Edsel, but indications from the management hints that
something big is in the works tourwise. Stay tuned!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Shallow Soundwave - who played at Hemulen in Gothenburg together with Broder
Daniel on saturday last week reports that it went very
well, even though their bass amplifier broke down at
first. MVG Records did not come to the gig though, but
said that they would when the band played at a venue
closer to Stockholm. Two other labels were there, Sun
Spot and FineTone, and both are highly interested in
signing the band. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Velvet Belly - (BMG) member Anne Marie Almedal is studying music science
in Rotterdam, Holland, which means that she is only part-time
star in the band at a time when everything goes better and
better for the band. A new single called "Mystery" will be
released later this spring. (Source: ZTV Nytt)

Subject: Cloudberry Jam + Whale tonight
Well, just informing everyone that there's kind of a mini-festival tonight
here in Linkoping (in Ryd, outside Herrgar'n). T&T, Cloudberry Jam and
Whale. I'm just back from the soundcheck, and it looks as if it will be
a very nice event. The sun shining, Henrik Schyffert in an extremely
playful mode and Cia Berg's voice actually did sound good (!). They played
a new song (I have no idea to what it's called) that was really good -
really better than anything I have heard by them earlier. More good things
are: 1) it's free, and 2) you can hear the music throughout the whole part
of the area of the city (Ryd). Henrik (from Cloudberry) said that the gig
yesterday at Gino in Stockholm had been kind of a disaster, electrical
problems mostly though. Jennie said they were going back to Japan (for
three weeks) in July, and that she hoped she wouldn't get sick this time...
:-) Anyway, Cloudberry Jam starts between 19.00 to 19.30, and Whale between
21.00 to 21.30.
Be there if you can!

Prolly is! At their Baltimore gig, people only seemed to recognize
"Bluster" and there were a few signs of recognition of "Honour Me"; other
than that, blank stares. I, of course, was singing along with every one
of 'em! Daniel saw me doing this, I think, as he cracked a smile when he
looked over at me (I had met him earlier that evening on the tour bus).
I yelled (too loudly??) for "A Play", but they didn't do it....they had a
short set and it seemed to be predetermined already. Judging from the
crowd reaction, I think most of the people there were really into Boys
Against Girls, which is funny, cos I thought they were the worst of the 3
bands that night (Edsel, OTOH, did rock!!).
BTW, there lots of free Salt "tour sampler" cassettes lying around the
club....it has a cardboard cover and the songs are: Honour Me, Witty
(remix), and one called "Occasion"......does anyone know if those 2 last
are on any other Salt releases, like a single or something? Just wondering.

So does this mean they're not playing Traestockfestivalen this year?
In any case, does anyone know who _is_ playing?
Robert, going to see Fidget tonight (they'd better be good...)

I dunno, these were just the dates that are booked until now, some more may
come up. But the said the'll have a six week vacation in june-july.
Another note: Yvonne are playing tonite, at Kulturhuset, Stockholm (the
Klarateater restaurant, just around the corner). I can't be there, but go
see, they still are good live... :)

Kinda reminds me of a Bear Quartet show some years ago,
Matti itroduced 'Blizzard' as 'Den har laten heter Blizzard,
det betyder snostorm pa svenska'.
The next song he introduced as 'Den har laten heter Headacher,
det betyder snostrom pa svenska'.
Btw, Matti Alkberg reviews records and writes music articles
in the local morning paper, he's not given a good grade to any
band yet. Gave 2 (out of 5) to Kent and the new Stardog record.

Well, I just had a chat with the Bob Hund manager and asked him if the
band will be playing at Trastockfestivalen. His reply was
"possibly". Also, I asked when the album will be released; the answer
was "maybe in August, depending on how well the recordings will go
on". The band is going to head for the studio next week to record four
tracks.
Some of this may be inaccurate due to my malfunctioning memory plus
the interference of the cool lounge music he was spinning on the
turntable. So don't hold it against me, thank you.

Just some small notes:
May 4th * In case you missed _Fidget_ (2 songs + interview with the ever crisp
and clear Nina Natri...) on the program Pop TV Live on ZTV yesterday,
tonight (May 4th) is the re-run of said program at 00.45.
May 6th * On monday (May 6th), Swedish National Radio channel P3's program
Musikjournalen will have West Side-group _Blissful_'s "Am I A Wreck"
EP as "this week's record release". A bit late one would think, but..

Y'know.....I'm just curious: does anyone on this list ever videotape any
of this stuff?? Because if they did, I would LOVE to get a copy, either
in trade or for $$$. I already know about the PAL-NTSC conversion thing,
and I dont care about paying the big money to convert for a tape full of
Cloudberry Jam, Cardigans, and stuff like that. I mean, I'm sure not
gonna see any of these bands on American TV. Please, if anyone tapes,
let me know.....
Gracias,
Chris
