Fine, but I really don't think I need to know when the Corrs and Eros
Ramazotti are doing their promotional visits. They're just not
very _indie_.

Robert, who didn't think the Eurovision Song Contest was very indie
either btw

Hi

Someone was asking for a progress report on the Finnish tape chain the
other day. Well, just to let you know that I got it this morning. I'm
number 7 on a list of nineteen and I'll be sending it to Ulf Harnhammar in
Sweden today or tomorrow (depending on whether I manage to pick up a C100
cassette at lunchtime).

Hey gang,

I got the following message:

According to Andreas Kierst:

is it still possible to pu me on the Finnish Tape Chain ?

If so here is my adress:

Andreas Kierst
Ernst-Moritz Arndt-Str. 3

So, I would kindly ask the person who is in the possession of the tape
at the moment (or will receive it next in case it is at the mercy of
international post right now) to add Andreas at the end of the list of
subscribers of the Finnish chain tape.

Thanks.

Great! I hope you liked at least a couple of the tracks there.

Well...some time ago I found this tape called 'Robinin jytajumppa'
in a box of discarded stuff back at my parents' house. It is from
mid-70's I think and it's one of those 'workout' things that were hip
at that time. I can still remember my mum swinging to that tape, uh, 20
years ago or so...

It's even funnier if you understand the lyrics which go
something like "...right now you hear some groovy music, don't
you feel how your toes are tapping to its beat? You have a sense
of rhythm!"
etc. I forget the rest... :)

Sorry for a slight delay in posting this reply, but I'm only on the digest
list. I live on the Suffolk/Essex border about 70 miles east (100-110km) of
London. Although I am based near Royston (50m/80km north/east) from London,
I am at present working in London (behind Victoria station). Confused, well
I don't blame you, but I sort of qualify as London based!

Sean (and any others), it seems that I'd probably enjoy CBJ too (I presently
like the Cardigans, although I have yet to see them live - as well as having
a (growing) interest in Stina Nordenstam). Eggstone is another that
occasionally crops up on the Cardigans list (see
http://www.mech.kth.se/~moch for more info including their now official
homepage) - perhaps I'd like them too.

Although I posted a question a couple of months ago (Stina Nordenstam), I
haven't posted anything since, so this goes some way towards redressing the
balance.

Regards,
James

Sorry, I never heard this name before, so it's not on the Icy Icy Tape.
But what it could be, is some familiar Icelandic band marketing
themselves abroad under a different name, stranger things have happened.
I've forwarded the question to some friends and might hear 'bout it soon.

Here are a couple of short questions I wish somebody could answer:

1) On which label was the Pineforest Crunch CD released?
2) Why can't I find it in any record store here (Tampere, Finland)??!
3) Does anybody even care?

OK, I am tired and bored...you can ignore 2 & 3 if you like...

the pineforset crunch cd came out on polar (famed from all those lovely
abba releases) which these days are part of stockholm label group which are
part of the polygram corperation so it shouldn't be that hard to dig out.

but i'd go for the "in the limelight" CD-comp which came out on H. Lime
Records last summer, two songs by pineforest crunch which are on the album
as well (barbie and cup noodle song) as well as great contributions by aBLe
and Leslies and My Favourite Martians and Honeyman and (i'm probably
forgetting someone)...

H. Lime is distributed by Border and there's info on the benno website -
http://www.mc.hik.se/benno/
and then it's under bands and labels ( you'll find it : ) )

I was there, but I can't say I was too impressed...
Ok, he acted like a total lunatic, but the thing was that you could really
feel that he was *acting*. It just wasn't for real, and you couldn't help
feeling a bit embarrased about the whole thing.

The music was pretty good, though. Like Union Carbide with a touch of The
Doors thrown in. And the support act, Sobsister, were really good too.
Reminded me a bit of Elastica, not only because their singer looked a lot
like Justine Frischman.

Now, over to something completely different... I saw an ad for something
called Dakar Pop at Gula Villan in Stockholm. A free festival with a bunch
of Swedish bands (Bear Quartet, Cloudberry Jam, Busty etc.), and, to my
uttermost suprise, one of the very very few british bands that have managed
to get me exited during the last year, Quickspace Supersport (with ex-Faith
Healer Tom Cullinan). Does anyone have any more info about this festival?
And does anyone know if QSSP have any other scandinavian dates booked?

Any info appreciated, etc...

/Ludde, listening to the new (incredibly cheap) Sammy album.

Great! I really wonder who they are.. maybe it's Unun? But, on the other
hand, it can be anyone. Howcome you Icelanders use them double words?
I mean, "Icy Icy", "Unun", "Gus Gus".. :-)

"Remember where you heard it first"
Contents:
Andy Bell, Ceilidh, Copenhagen Rockfestival, HappyDeadMen, Jaune, Roskilde
Festival, Smart!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andy Bell - from ex-Ride will be DJ'ing together with Andres Lokko at
Various (Tuben, Odenplan) in Stockholm this upcoming
monday (May 27th). (Source: John B)

Ceilidh - the songs on that compilation CD you have been reading about here
is actually almost completely decided on, and that means that a
list will follow here: Brainpool - "At School", Cardigans -
"Rise & Shine", Cod Lovers - "Bye Bye Pain", Dream -
"Love's a Drug", HappyDeadMen - "Science Fiction", Lunchroom
Manners - "Pete Best", Nashville Neurotics - "Lost Highway",
Persuaders - "Her New Candy", Saturday Kids - ?, Sister James
- "This Current Doom", Sonic Surf City - "Surfin' Kitty",
Stevepops - "Waiting For The Summer", Suredo - "Sonic Atmosphere",
Thee Expression - "Inspire You", The Bear Quartet - "Headacher".
(Source: John B)

Copenhagen - Rockfestival suffered a blow today when Prince cancelled.
The reason apparently was that he wanted to spend some time
with his pregnant wife. (Source: ZTV Nytt)

HappyDeadMen - (Trampolene) played a secret gig in Stockholm last week,
though it was not a secret for long. They played for 1600
students in an area as big as Grona Lund with everything
you could imagine at such a location. Other bands that
played were Vildsvin, This Perfect Day and Thore Skogman!
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Jaune - a band that is said to have a sound similar to Smashing Pumpkins-Jam-
Popsicle will play in Boras at Karen on friday (May 24th). Rumors
say that this band is somewhat of a favourite among a couple of
major labels, which usually means that a contract is not far away.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Roskilde - festival in Denmark announced it's almost complete program on May
20th, and with that, information regarding the whole event.
As this information is pretty lengthy, you will probably be better
off checking out their web-site: http://www.Roskilde-Festival.dk
or SIN's at: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/ofest96.html.
But, noting the Scandinavian link, SOME of the scandinavian bands
playing has to be listed here: Denmark: Passion Orange, Ruby Fruit,
Jungle, Baal, Merzy, Bleeder, Grope, Hotel Hunger, Boghandle,
Kashmir, Strawberry Slaughterhouse, Psyched Up Janis, Pretty Maids,
D.A.D., Fire Music, Sort Sol and Dizzy Mizz Lizzy. Sweden:
No Fun At All, Kent and Pineforest Crunch. Norway: Bel Canto.
Finland: El{kel{iset, Iceland: Bj|rk. And two I'm not sure where
they come from: Kinky Vibes and Rinneradio. I just like to add
a few other names that blows me away: Cocteau Twins, Sebadoh,
Spain, Mazzy Star and Cypress Hill (yes my music taste is pretty
stoned, I know). But like stated before, please check their web-
pages for the complete information. (Source: Roskilde Festival)

Smart! - ex-Stevepops rumors say that, and I quote, "totally brilliant song
'Almost Summer' (their finest to date and the only popsong I've heard
concerning hayfever) from the Toodle sessions may be released as
a Stevepops/Smart! split 7"
as soon as the first Smart! works are
starting to appear." The band rehearsed for the first time this
week (though without a drummer - drummers sign up!). They share
the rehearsing place with Fireside and Monster. (Source: John B)

Why indeed! Perhaps we should do something about this injustice which

Seriously, if you (or anybody else) want me to pick up some records by
the bands you mention (or by some other Finnish bands), let me know;

Next time you're in Stockholm, you should visit Radioshopen on
V{sterl}nggatan in Gamla Stan. It's a Finnish guy who runs it, and
he's more or less specialized into Finnish music, rock as well as tango.
That where I've picked up all my wonderful noise rock albums...
Mana Mana, Psychoplasma, Radiopuhelimet, L'amourder... Those were the days!

He's got good contacts with labels like Bad Vugum and Gaga Goodies too,
so what he doesn't have in stock he'll order for you.

Like I said, it's free and starts at noon. To get to Vallentuna Centrum
you take bus 610 from Danderyds hospital. That's all the info that's on
the flyer, so that's all I know.

The purpose of the list is for the discussion of indie music in the UK.
This can cover indie music from the UK, indie music played in the UK,
or whatever. The term "
indie" often causes great argument over what
constitues "
indie" music. The purpose of the list is not to argue this
point! In theory anything can be discussed, but typically anything which
is likely to be featured by NME or Melody Maker is fair material,
regardless of which company distributes it.

I saw HoW as support to Olle Ljungstrom at Universitetet. I was pretty
drunk at the occasion, but i remember them playing good rock with a playful
attitude. Students band i would believe.

Hmm. I wasn't too impressed at the gig, but listening to my livetape
afterwards, they're pretty OK.

OK, they're four young indie guys, i think the singer is from Gotland ;)
Anyway, they played some melancholic but still powerful indie, guitars
somewhere between Catherine Wheel and Slowdive, some of the melodies are
Oasis but played in minor chords. Monostar still lack stage precense, ok
not easy in this little shack called Tantogarden. And i couldn't really
focus on the singers voice, he seemed to be a bit nervous.
What saved them was the original guitar, the player has a big electronic
monster pedal processor, and sometimes he plays the strings at the top
instead of down by the mikes, making it go "
krrrch!".

The lyrics could be interesting, if sung with more intensity, not just
Mumbled/spoken. But they'll learn, i'm sure.

Subject: chouette

hi all,

just a short little recomendation. i got the first issue of kimmo and
sami's zine chouette a couple of days ago and its the most wonderful little
thing. filled with delightful rants about the need to express oneself - so
many bands to be talked about, so many wonderful songs to spread the word
about - paired with realy nice interviews with the san francisco powerhouse
henry's dress, fins supperheads and dada girl and the estonian dallas. and
a start of a fall retrospective. and a bunch of record reviews.

all in a realy nice design, the twosome in charge even manage to make
punk-style clip-art look stylish. and the writing is realy above par,
insightful, interesting, open eyed, witty, and they slip with ease out of
the trap of over enthusiasm that many a fanzine writer get stuck in. the
reviews are a treat, it's hard to believe this is their first effort in the
zine business. great thoughts on great bands, praising those who deserve so
and being honest and true to those who deserve to get off the hype wagon.

and the list of adresses to the labels and bands chouette use and endorse
is worth the price alone.

way to go kimmo and sami.

take care all and mail away for chouette as soon as possible.

Yeah, i was at pulkvedim. Nice music, the DJ played some NIN for me. But

Subject: Icy Icy Tape

I have Albert's tape in my possession at the moment. After listening
to it a couple of times I'm bound to agree with whoever (Erik?) said
that Unun stands out here. I especially love the track together with
Pall Oskar, "
Love Wins" -- how true :) But is it only me, or do Unun
sound very much like Darling Buds at times? Especially the first 2 songs.

What more... I must say that Texas Jesus failed to make very big impact
on me. And Reptile are a little too... hmmm, folksy maybe.
But Bellatrix/Kolrassa are very enjoyable.

I was happy to see that included were tracks by Purrkur Pillnikk and
Tappi Tikarrass, I've been very curious to hear these seminal Icelandic
bands for a long time. I just wish there had been material by Theyr and
Kukl on the tape too, but I suppose I can't get everything.

The song by Ornamental, with the lovely Rose McDowall of Strawberry
Switchblade fame, is a gem. I just love her soothing voice.
And I was really happy that you taped a track from the wonderful
HOH/Current 93 collaboration "
Island", but I can't believe you didn't
choose the opening track "
Falling", with Bjork on backing vocals. It's
probably the best song she was ever involved in (imho of course).

Speaking of HOH, just recently I picked up the "
Temperature Of Blood"
album by Reptilicus (not on the tape, and not to be confused with Reptile),
which is produced by HOH. Reptilicus is an Icelandic duo that is
something like a mix of Current 93 and Skinny Puppy, pretty great if
you're into synth/industrial music.

Finally, some administrative blurbs. Andreas from Germany is added to
the circulation list, but I vaguely recall that some dude from Greece
also should be added to the list. If Albert kindly sends me his address
I'll write it down at the end.

Whatever became of Ham, btw?

Bob Hund; Mejeriet, Lund, Sweden; May 28, 1996

Here's a _small_ review of the Bob Hund gig that I attended last night.

"
Hi. We are the Rolling Stones and this song is called 'Volkswagen blues'"
(Thomas's - lead singer of the band - first words after entering the stage).

It was great, definitely the gig of the year so far! The band was really
tight and Thomas was dancing like... uh Thomas! I believe he was down in
the audience three or four times, the most memorable being during "
Mer an
sa kan ingen bli". When he was about to sing "Vagar du va' radd star jag
pa kna" (="If you dare to be afraid I'll stand on my knees") he ran off
the stage and went down on his knees in the middle of the audience and sang
the line from there!

They played three of the four songs from the new EP, all except "
Min
trampolin". A lot of new songs were also played, including "Var ska skapet
sta, gubbjavel?". Including the encore they played 16 songs.

At the entrance they sold some merchandise including the last copies of
the limited edition (700 copies) vinyl of the 1994 album, a 10"
version
of the new EP, the first EP on CD and a white t-shirt.

A band called Sive opened for them. They only played about five songs, but
sounded quite ok to me (though my friends thought they really sucked).

Yeah, your friends were right indeed. Pathetic!

As Sound Affects put it in their latest issue (#30):

" As a really lousy Bob Hund, but in Stockholmish.
And then I mean REALLY lousy. 1 out of 5 stars. "

The fact that EMI picked them up is worth to mention,
don't you think!? When will Magnus Nygren (A&R) learn
about life???

IMHO - It could be worse...
