Yep, it's time for my semi-regular Red Sleeping Beauty plug... :)
According to xander@sirius.com:
* I will make this short suggestion though, regarding Red Sleeping Beauty
* about whom relatively few people on this list seem to be informed. I would
* recommend starting with the new 8 song CD, "Bedroom", on Marsh Marigold.
* "Pop Song" or "Selfish" would probably be good bets for the tape. (You can
* get the disc from Joerg Winzer's Mind the Gap Mailorder in Germany:
* <1winzer@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>). Or my favorite: "Her Favourite
* Clich=E9" from the EuroPop 7" compilation on Siesta.
I second Alexander's "Europop" recommendation - besides the fabulous
RSB track, you'll get fine summery tunes by La Buena Vida, Arabesque
and Moving Pictures! All top quality!
Surely the "Bedroom" CD will also serve as a good introduction to the
band, however, for some reason, I wasn't as thrilled by it as I could
have been. On the other hand, a three-track tape of theirs that passed
through my hands some time ago was quite brilliant! I think they were
newer songs, at least the band sound was a bit different from
"Bedroom", slightly less synthetic in a 'more organic' kind of way.
And yes, that Tortoise CD is quite amazing...
Kimmo
ps. Erik, I'll get your tape done one of these days... :)

I thought the festival only stretched from Friday to Saturday (10-11). On
Saturday, 2 bands featuring listmembers, Blake Carringtons and Able, both
from Uppsala, will play.

The posters and their homepage say 9-11, but I think the first
day is just a "warm up". Nor the posters or homepage tell much
more than that apart from before mentioned bands, also KSMB
and Javlar Anamma plays.

Subject: shallow soundwave demo
Hello there,
some of you may remember Erik's rave review of the Shallow Soundwave
demo from some time ago. Well, after reading that I wrote them, but
got no reply until this morning, when an envelope containing their
demo tape arrived!
I had expected the tape would be rather good, but I was quite
surprised to find out how incredibly wonderful it is! Four great songs
with beautiful vocals and guitars with lots of effectboxes used in the
right way, and great melodies to boot! I think this may be the best
demo tape I have ever heard - I listened to it at least ten times in a
row this morning and it just keeps on getting better!!! Soon I need to
ask for a new copy to replace this doomed-to-be-worn-out one :)
I can't remember which bands Erik compared them to, but while
listening to the tape I couldn't help but think of Curve, Lush, My
Bloody Valentine, (early) Boo Radleys, Swallow, Slowdive, Coctaeu
Twins...etc etc. - in other words all the great dreampop/shoegaze
bands that ruled my world in the early 90's...oh, those sweet
memories... anyway, I don't mean to say that Shallow Soundwave are
just copyists, rather they exist in the same musical environment than
those bands, sharing the similar ideology and concepts.
Need I say more? Write to them pronto and tell you want to hear this tape!!
Kimmo

About the "Europop" ep, Kimmo said:

I've got to follow this up by saying:
Normally I take a steady diet of pop and difficult listening (noise,
classical, jazz, whatever) and I avoid most of the music that falls in the
middle. The difficult listening stuff goes a long way towards carrying me
through the dry pop spells. Getting Europop and Grimsey #1 (RSB/Benito
split - Benito is Jim & Stephanie Ruiz) in the mail one day last October
completely and thoroughly upset my musical equilibrim. Aside from finally
turning me on to RSB (their 3" CD on Marsh Marigold hadn't done very much
for me), these two records reignited my passion for pop music. Ever since,
I've been on a pure pop diet. I've also entered a new phase of massive
record acquisition. All this has been very hard on my poor accountant's
nerves.

Could this be the "Sick & Tired" ep on Siesta (very late 95, I think) or
something newer?
Another recent release on Siesta is "Me Too" by Club 8. They're from Lund,
and I don't really know much about them other than that it was supposed to
be Johan from such and such band and his girlfriend Karolina (big question
mark). They work in a similar vein to RSB, maybe a tad mellower and
slightly less wimpy. If you like the former, I'd recommend this. I got it
from Mind the Gap.
I can't say enough good things about Siesta. Everything I've heard on the
label has been tops, with the exception of Throw That Beat (Germany) and
the Wedding Present. They should really just leave England to rot. (I can
say this as I spent all of the 80's listening to British pop).
Does anyone know what the deal with Acid House Kings is? Are they still
working as a side project of one or two members of RSB? At times the two
bands can be all but indistinguishable.
My latest contribution to this thread done, now it's back to Kimmo...

ok this is the story so far...
red sleeping beauty are mikael matsson along with kristina, callis and
niklas angerg=E5rd. basicly they started out as a one man project taking the
name from the awsome mccarthy song "red sleeping beauty". kristina is
mikaels girlfriend and callis sort of slipped into the band when kristina
realised she was never going to be a bassplayer. niklas moved to stockholm
from =E5hus and due to their similar t-shirt taste (heavenly, orchids et al)
he asked if he could join rsb as well. nowadays rsb are also joined by
tilda who rattl=F6es a pretty mean tambourine and sings a bit. no drummer
though. yet.
niklas in turn is one of the acid house kings alongside his brother, johan
and another =E5hus popkid, the threesome are also known as semester doing the
ahks style pop in swedish. johan and his girlfriend are club 8 and somehow
poprace also gets tied in somewhere along the same lines.
acid house kings were on a european tour and got fellow sk=E5ninge popstrers
leslies a deal with the french label la belle pop. and even the
kristianastad threepiece starlet are good freinds of all bands and are well
worth looking out for.
the threesong demo that was raved about is not the siesta "rise and shine"
EP but a new demo recorded this winter and it is indeed their best stuff
yet, and if thats not enough the 3 song "smile" ep on sunday is a good bet
aswell, a little more synthetic but then again it is produced by mike of
they-go-boom and the rumour is that the field mice original drummachine was
used in the recording process.
i'll join in on the siesta praise aswell, very cool label, but we mustn't
forget elephant their spanish little brother, there's loads of cool stuff
coming out there as well.

Hi all,
Well, I'd been hearing about this band Stereolab on this list for awhile
now, and the descriptions sounded cool, so the other day I listened to
thier new CD (something about "emperor ketchup") at the CD shop. I was
pretty much blown away. Waaaaaaaay better than I was expecting. It was
actually the coolest, most inventive thing I've heard in some
time! Now I know this band has a decent sized back catalog, so the
question is: is their other stuff as good as this new release? What would
be a good "next" Stereolab album to purchase? Could someone who is
into this band help me out here? Many thanx in advance,

Subject: Bob hund interviewed in DN
Yesterday's Dagens Nyheter had bob hund all over the front page of the
Arts section... First with a fresh translation, yours truly!
Robert, actually a bit miffed that it's only going to be an EP
----
"YOU HAVE TO LOOK AFTER YOUR FAULTS"
by Ann Persson, trans Robert Cumming
Rock music usually smells of beer, _stor stark_ beer. Bob hund have
strawberry juice in their glass and a heart jumping like popcorn
popping. They sing about fully-grown popkids who don't want to be
boring distanced men. An EP and hard gigging in Soedermalm's clubs
gave birth to rumours about a band that wasn't quite like any other.
They appeared from nowhere just when I had almost given up keeping up
with all those new promising Swedish pop bands. The singer climbed
out on the crowd's arms and sang synth-psalms with a brittle, hesitant
voice, trembling with child-like faith, bursting out into clashing
punk noise.
-- Three chords everyone knows and the wrong tune. That's what makes
it really great. You have to turn up the volume on the mistakes, says
singer Thomas Oeberg.
Bob hund are a slimline band who have proved themselves to be broader
than that. Their only LP ended up in the charts. And when Pop
magazine let Blur listen to Swedish music, bob hund's record was the
only one they wanted to take home with them.
In a week or so bob hund will once again do something untypical of the
music business. They're releasing a new EP with four songs, on both
vinyl and CD.
-- People have learnt to like the scratches on vinyl records. The
ones who do all that smart polishing don't realise that people
actually like defects. They don't realise that machines have to be
made to adapt to people who arrive too late, people who forget,
people who are unhappy or have a sore stomach. Things that are
clinically perfect don't need my love. They don't need me, says
Thomas Oeberg.
When the press wanted nothing other than to show off the new, fresh
and gifted, bob hund kept their distance. It takes a week before they
decide to say yes to this interview. If you care about things and
there are six members in the band, things take time. Finally bob hund
decide unanimously to let singer Thomas Oeberg and guitarist Conny
Nimmersjoe meet DN at a cafe called The Bakery. New negotiations are
required before the photographer can get all six in the same picture.
Bob hund don't want to waste rehearsal time, you see; the band is made
up of young parents and the sort that live Dracula lives till five in
the morning. Jonas Jonasson and Thomas Oeberg were in a synth duo;
Conny began as a post-punk and managed to play a fair bit before the
punk clubs closed in the mid-80s. What brought the band together was
a love of human frailty. They met in the rehearsal studio without
protective ice-hockey gear, and without polite chatter about the
best films of the 90s.
-- Everyone in the band has faults that it took turning thirty to
discover. A lot of the charm of it is because we like each other's
faults, says Thomas.
Conny continues: -- Our music isn't muscle-stretching music. If we
play, we don't sound like Soundgarden, says Conny. None of us got to
do military service. We wanted to. But we didn't get to.
The band's lyrics are a crusade against entrenched certainty: "It would
be easy for me to say I don't really like you. But I do, I think."
Fragile, hesitating and trembling. And in another song: "Boy's
bedroom and a girl, terror or joy?"
-- I sometimes think it's fun to take off my shirt on stage. But it's
just because I'm so incredibly skinny. It gets a bit ridiculous when
the Rolling Stones radiate the feeling that everything will be fine if
you just drink cans of beer, burp, slam the door, get nosebleeds and
sweat under the arms. But then there are interesting macho types,
like Gregory Peck, says Thomas.
Instead of Bob Dylan he cites his old Swedish teacher as a source of
inspiration. And Fritiof Nilsson Piraten's account of student life
'Three Terms', with its fanatstic swings between half-crazy drunken
humour and hypersentimental romance.
-- Rock music that only lives in a rock world is the most boring thing
possible, says Conny.

I recommend the Stereolab single collection "Refried Ectoplasm(switched on
volume 2)".Listen to the cool tune "LO BOOB OSCILLATOR". You can buy the

I'm about to get an order from MTG but Joerg is writing and telling me that
there is more room in my package to add a few more records (and still pay
the same amount for p&p - that's great mailorder service, BTW).
I was wondering about adding something by BEAR QUARTET to my order.
Joerg's got:
"To Create a Monster" CD5 - 10DM, and
"Everybody Else" CD - 25DM
This is what he says about them:
"These B.Z. releases are the best they ever did (I think). Warm and
melancholic pop that reminds me somehow of the Apartments (except the
voice)."
Second opinions anyone? Recommendations? Other thoughts?

Although this isn't scan-indie, Chris asked about Stereolab and I hope no-one
else will mind seeing it here.
Actually, if you like the new album Emperor Tomato Ketchup, you'll like
everything they've ever done, because it's all extremely similar in style and
consistent in quality. It's a tremendously powerful musical vision which
they've managed to develop to such a large extent it's quite frightening.
Look out for last year's Music from the Amorphous Body Centre (this was
limited edition so may be difficult to find), the compilation which is
called Refried Ectoplasm Switched On (Volume Two), the album Mars Audiac
Quintet... and anything else you can find, really, you won't be disappointed.
For anyone who doesn't know the band, their sound is tremendously lush and
hpnotically repetitive but at the same time tuneful and engaging, with Hammond
organ to the fore in the earlier stuff especially, and bizarre Marxist vocals
mostly in French... difficult to describe! Perhaps like a cross between St
Etienne and Kraftwerk (hmm...)

First, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who gave me Stereolab
suggestions. And as far as comparisons go, I'd also add in early 70's
Funkadelic and Pink Floyd (those psychedelic, swirling organs),...anyone
who likes the song "Metronomic Underground" (I love it) should check out
Funkadelic's "Free Your Mind and your Ass Will Follow"....it's got the
exact same vibe and spacey, psychey atmosphere!

I'd definitely recommend you get "Everybody Else" - it's my favourite

It's very mellow, laidback, soft and melancholic (as Jorg said in his

I'd recommend you all of their albums; Bear Quartet is simply the best
Scandinavian band by far. The three first albums, "Penny Century", "Cosy
Den", and "Family Affair" are more guitar based, with inspiration from the
likes of Pavement, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Television and Smiths. While the
two latest; "Everybody Else" and "Holy Holy" are more easy listening,
influenced by Stereolab, Burt Bacharach, Go-Betweens and Carole King (?). On
the whole, Bear Quartet differs from all other Swedish, and Scandinavian
bands, mostly because of the brilliant, sad and melancholic lyrics -
absolutely ace. Like Smiths without humour.
My favourite album is "Cosy Den", but the "Revisited EP" with the wondrous
"Capital Breath" track (best intro in swedish pop history?), I'd recommend
you as well. Their last album, "Holy Holy" continues where "Everybody Else"
ended but is in some way lacking energy, it feels like some songs not are
fully completed yet. However, there are as usual some brilliant lyrics and
songs, "Same Spell On Everyone", a cynical story, and "Born With Teeth",
about themselves (?), are rather swell.

Well, Drifter is probably their only released "indie pop style" song,
which I think is nice, but then again, it is hardly representative to
what they sound like today. And then again, Drifter is the only song

kind of mix of it all on this tape. But that doesn't stop us from making
a second Swedish Indie tape does it? :-)

No! I never buy them magazines (unless there's something really interesting
in them, that is). Could you type in the review and post it on the list?

Yeah, I saw stickers all around town (Stockholm) saying something about
what a crap move from Radio BANDIT it was to sack all their english DJs,
and that everyone should call or mail or fax or whatever them and tell
them that. (yes, I did leave out the foul words in the "translation"

It really all depends on what you're looking for here. The ones above shows
you a BQ that has changed somewhat from their previously usual experimental
guitar-noise-wall-ish sound, that was what made me love the band. That is to
say that all their earlier albums and EPs differ from the two CDs above. But
I am not saying that the above ones are bad or something. I like them too,
just not as much, because the alarming guitars are simply _gone_ there. More
melodies, trumpets, trombones (right? - I just can't remember right now) and
Matti really singing in high tones (which was pretty umm, surprising for me,
the first time I heard it...).
In a nutshell - if you want guitar-walls: go for their earlier releases.
My 5 euro cents..

There were even 4 bands called Shallow - the Canadian one, the UK one
and two Swedish ones (one from Link|ping and one from Gothenburg). So,
now there are only two left, the Link|ping and the UK ones.

Does this sound crazy? I happen to be very fond of the Cardigans, but this
is probably the one band that everyone on the list *has* heard already.
And chances are, everyone knows whether they like them or not. So maybe it
would work in the interest of introducing new music to new listeners to
drop them from the tape line up and donate their space to some lesser known
act?
Anyway, I still find it hard to vote, because I keep hoping that everything
on the tape will be new to me, but in the spirit of passing the best songs
along to everyone on the tape chain, I'll cast these votes:
Eggstone: My Trumpets (of the songs offered. "Beach Boy" and "Good Morning"
are probably my two favorites, though).
Red Sleeping Beauty: Her Favorite Cliche
(I know little or nothing about the rest of the bands).

Count me in also. I might have missed some discussions about Fidget while
I was unsubscribed, but I just want to say that I thought they were very
good when they played at Sturehof in Stockholm last Friday. There are still
some rough spots, but they have tremendous potential. I got the feeling
that Sugarcubes would have sounded like this if they were signed to Creation.

What is the "Creation sound"? Being really new to the Swedish indie
scene, I'm dying to know, because your comment above has really piqued my
interest now......the Sugarcubes are my favorite band *of all time*. Any
band that sounds even remotely similar to them is a "must-listen" for me!

OK, I'll see what I can do, as I'm going to send you a tape anyway (as
you already know...) I'll include the three-song demo which was talked
about earlier at least.
In case you can't wait until my incompetence disappears temporarily,
you can always try some of the friendly mail-order services who carry

successfully several times, so anybody can do it! :) The Four Letter

their catalog at http://www2.best.com/~bliss/ or mail Clint Barnes at
bliss@best.com and if you don't want to be such an idiot as I have
been and order European releases from the US, you can go for the Mind
The Gap mail order. Some resourceful lister will surely give their
address and the URL to their on-line catalogue (I seem to remember
that they have one as well).
there's nothing like receiving a fresh package of 7"'s and CD's once

by Erik S|derstr|m (chief@lysator.liu.se)
"Remember where you heard it first"
Contents:
A West Side Fabrication, Fidget, Roskilde Festival, Salt, Sound Affects,
Trastocksfestivalen, Wannadies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A West Side Fabrication - the Skelleftea label that would sign yet another
band to their stable (reported earlier here) has
not yet done so. The owner, Jocke, says that he
really has had way too much to do lately, and that
there really has not been time for it, but that he
would work on it. So keep him busy with your demo
cassettes! Address: A West Side Fabrication,
Box 183, 931 22 Skelleftea, Sweden.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Fidget - the planned showcase April 12th in Stockholm was moved to the club
"O" at the last minute, and they had to start as early as 19:30.
"So that we wouldn't disturb the guests at Sturehof" Daniel (guitar)
explained afterwards. The gig went very well, even though an effect-
pedal did not want to work from the start and a cord that did not
want to stay put in Daniel's guitar. A&R people from ten (!) record
labels were present in the audience, which made the band very
nervous, but they were very well received and played an extra
number too. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Roskilde Festival - in Denmark June 27-30 adds a bunch of new names to their
already impressive list of bands/artists appearing:
Bel Canto (N), Bluetones (The) (UK), Nick Cave & The
Bad Seeds (AUS), D.A.D. (DK), Foo Fighters (US),
Frontline Assembly (CAN), Kinky Vibes (N), Mole Session
(The) (S), Schweinhund (N), Underworld (UK) and
Walkabouts (The) (US). (Source: Roskilde Information)
Salt - (MVG/Island) are starting their next US tour the day after tomorrow
in Baltimore. That we know. But their US label, Island, has not
decided whether or not they will actually make a CD single of the
song "So". If it will be released, it will also come with a couple
of non-album tracks, which means _new_ songs. There is no change in
the plans for the 'Mission Impossible: the Soundtrack' CD though.
"So" will still appear on it. The CD will be released in the US in
May and the movie comes out at the end of May (also in the US).
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Sound Affects - one of the best swedish Pop magazines will _not_ release
their next issue in June, as stated in current issue. This
is no surprise to its readers, as it has taken about a year
between issues lately. What _is_ a surprise is that the
new issue will be released at the end of April (!) instead!
Time for miracles! (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Trastocksfestivalen - the Swedish Woodstock (yes it is for free) that takes
place in Skelleftea July 19-20 will have a very strong
emphasis on "indie" music this year, says record label
guru Jocke at West Side. Indie Mecca sort of. The line-
up will start to be presented in about a week, but as
usual, most of the West Side bands will perform. The
festival will be opened on July 18th with a big party
in downtown Skelleftea with all the West Side bands,
but from what I know, this is not a public happening.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Wannadies - (Soap/Indolent) entered the UK single chart directly at number
18 this week with their single "You And Me Song". Indolent will
because of this start to promote their album(s) once again. The
band will go on a 10-gig tour by themselves in the UK starting
at the end of April. (Source: ZTV)
