Here, I have to admit that I really don't pay much attention to lyrics,
usually. And so, I have no opinion on which album has the better lyrics! :-)

I'll go along with that.

I guess *I* need to rephrase now.....heheh...ok, I don't *dislike* her
second album, actually. It's just that I can't help but compare it to the
other one, and when I do, it just somehow falls flat in my eyes. I keep
wanting her voice to DO MORE, it just sounds so damn monotone! ANd I love her
voice, so it's frustrating to hear her put such limits on it. Mind you,
I'm talking about the album as a whole.....there are some individual
tunes on there that I like a whole lot (more than some others on the
OTHER album!). If I said I disliked it, I was misleading....

Heh, ok, you asked for it: Bjork, Sugarcubes, The Brand New Heavies,
Jane's Addiction, k.d. lang, David Sylvian, Billie Holiday, Joy Division,
early Heart, late 70s Doobie Brothers, Mr. Bungle, Salt, the
Cardigans, Dead Can Dance, loads of 70s funk like Parliament/Funkadelic,
George Clinton, Juliana Hatfield, Scratch Acid, Bob Marley, Kate Bush, John
Coltrane, Faith No More, Mudhoney, the Sundays, Frente!, lots of Icelandic
stuff like Unun, Bellatrix, Reptile, etc,......I guess that gives you an
idea.... .......yes, I'm a deranged individual!

I don't know. Is Stina really popular in Sweden? I didn't know. Here (the
States) she is pretty much unknown. If someone held a gun to my head and
forced me to describe Stina's music, I suppose I would call it some sorta adult
ambient jazzpop. Being an ex music journo myself, I always try to compare
to other bands ;-) but I'm at a loss when it comes to Stina, because
although the first time I heard her (esp. "Memories of a Color"), it
somehow sounded warm and familiar, yet I still cannot say who it sounds
like! To me, that's the mark of a really great artist.

Okay, spent the whole day with Fidget today, and have a massive interview
that I will type in tomorrow - because I must to go and see them play
tonight too. They were kind enough to let me copy their master CD for their
latest demo (which sounds _really_ good), so a review of it will also
be posted pretty soon.

Well, i bought the NEW STEREOLAB cd today and the sound was really
something different. The thing is that i wonder if the old STEREOLAB
albums have the same sound as the new one? Cause were i live all of
the old albums are sold out so i have no idea how they sound.
But i have heard one old song at Z-tv some moths ago and i sounded
really great and some different from the new album.

A Shrine - (West Side) received a "3" (out of 5) from both evening papers
here in Sweden yesterday, for their new album "Unisex" released
last monday. Both papers praise the former northern guitar-
indiers' decision to make club/dance/experimental music.

Carpe Wade - (West Side) have recorded at least fifteen new songs the last
few weeks, which of course sounds promising. But, they have
thrown away about eleven of them because they are changing
their style - from hardcore with a bit of pop, to pure pop!

Cessna - from Finland will appear on a US compilation tape, soon to be
released, together with (among others) swedish bands Celeste
and Red Sleeping Beauty. More information will be posted when

Emmaboda - festival 96, August 9-10 lists the following artists as
ready now: Bob Hund, Mouth, Naked, Popsicle, Pineforest Crunch,
Sobsister, Silverbullet, Broder Daniel, Fly, Lousy, Brick
and Chester Copperpot. A total of 30 artists will play at

Fidget - had a very succesful gig in Linkoping on thursday, which resulted
in an extra-number - something the band usually do not do, said
singer Nina Natri. There's someone in Gothenburg who is working
on a homepage (pretty much ready) for Fidget right now, the band
said, though they didn't remember the address. Stay tuned to this

Herrgar'n - the "student" venue here in Linkoping celebrates it's 10
year anniversary in May. Three bands will play on a selected
night for the celebrations, and rumours say that two of
the bands are Lustans Lakejer and Cloudberry Jam. More info
about the festivities will be posted closer to the event.

Hultsfred - festival 1996-goers will also be able to see Chester Copperpot
from Gothenburg, who are performing at the festival this year.
On the down side, Afghan Whigs cancelled.

Lousy - from Tenhult have climbed up to a number 8 spot (from 10 the week
before that) on the "most played singles/demos" list at a radio
station in Calgary, Canada with the song "Heavy Metal". You can

Skylten - the Linkoping venue run by the local organization "Rock d'Amour"
are looking for bands who want to be opening acts for forthcoming
gigs at the venue. They say that they will pick local bands first,
but sending them (_Not_ Kevin, as told before) a demo cassette/

Souls - (Telegram) new album "In Between Bird And Fish" has been delayed
once again, and will not be released until August this year.

Super - from Finland are now recording basic tracks for a forthcoming

Surreal - from Varberg, recorded a new demo at the Recordia Studios
at the same time as Fidget recorded their latest one. The
new demo contains 6 songs that are a lot heavier than
on their earlier demo, said Ulf Cronheim (bass). The band
has changed a lot and the only remaining member since those
days is Martin Wegland (vocals). New members are Ulf,
Tony Karlsson (drums) and Martin Widhag (guitar). Their sound,
Ulf said, can be labeled "american rattling, straggly pop
with a lot of melodies and choir-singing." A review will be

Hi!
Just found this list, and I thought I'd say hello!
I'm mainly on this list for one band: The Wannadies. I discovered them about a
year ago, and basically fell in love with them instantly. I've now seen them
twice, here in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Once last October when they supported
Sleeper (and in fact they blew Sleeper off the stage), and again in February
when they supported Frank Black.
What I'm mainly after is to find any similar bands, and I want to find out
anything I possibly can about the Wannadies. I know they've released 3 albums,
I've got two of them (The Wannadies & Be A Girl). Can anyone help me get a
hold of the other lp? I haven't even got a clue as to what it's called.
Maybe there are some other people out there in the Newcastle/Tyneside area -
we could meet up next time the band play.

Fellows!
I'm typing this down from a terminal in Liepaja, Latvia. Sorry, i have to
unsub for a while, coz i'm away from my account in Stockholm.
Anyway, what's hot in Riga?!
I checked out a disco owned by a swede, that was supposed to be good. It
wasn't. Boring techo/house on the dancefloor, just like some of the crappy
places back home. No latvian music, and certainly no indie. But interesting
in one way, almost everybody there were russians.
It seems to be some kind of segregation, russians and latvians don't mix.
The place is called Omega, but i won't go there again. 3 lats ($5) in entrance
was way too much, in baltic terms, i could have had 5 beers for that money.
I ended up in a strip club yesterday, sleazy russian ladies... Some super
drunk russian gorillas hung around in the bar and paid my bill for the whole
night. OK, now i know how the latvian beer tastes, for sure. %) Well, i didn't
ask where they got all their money from, but you've all heard about orgainzed
crime?! The mafia, they call it..
But i'll resort to my favourite hang-out, the much talked-about Slepenais
Eksperiments for future clubbing...

Scandinavian Indie Review:
Apart from the basic electric guitars, drums and bass, it definitely takes
more than ordinary courage to combine it all with a sometimes creamy, whining,
sad, and sometimes screaming, nails-against-chalkboard, lap steel guitar, a
clarinet and "oral percussion". It takes an experimental feeling that never
recedes from its original thought. And that feeling is exactly what this
Uppsala band supply.
Beautiful segments with a sad clarinet are neatly tied together with
distorted electric guitars and drums speeding down a highway. In "Mercy Beat",
I find clear references to the false breaks that Mouth is known for, and in
"...& A Way To End This Life", Johan Gille clearly shows that he is both a
great singer (his voice somewhat similar to Popsicle-Andreas') and song-
writer, "I can't see what we would be, without treachery and lies, all I
think about is me, and a way to end this life." is not just direct, it is
brilliant! It is probably a feeling most of us have felt at some point in
our lives.
His voice alone is strong and confident, but together with Lotta Nyblad,
with her bright, light, voice, that sometimes reminds me of Jennie Medin
from Cloudberry Jam, stretching the vocals, they hit the nail on its head
(and you know how much I like male & female vocals together...) Though for
the next time, I request more vocals from Johan. I usually select female
vocals over male, but not this time.
To round this up, I would say that the days when they were compared with
Cardigans and Cloudberry Jam are over. Well almost. But for the better!

Scandinavian Indie Review:
I accidentally missed most of Uppsala-BC's live performance here in
Linkoping in January this year, and boy do I regret that I did! In
"Extraordinary", I find distorted hollow guitar riffs, brought together
with roaring and thunderous guitar-walls that makes way for Magnus
Skarbo's voice, that I feel is best described as PiL mixed with Antony
Kiedis. And strangely (?) enough, it sounds great! Single guitar riffs,
crashing drums and bass lines are making webs throughout every song,
creating a red thread, like glue, that makes it all work together.
A turbo powered steam-roller, thundering down one of those american straight
stretches in the desert; scary but at the same time devastatingly beautiful.

Usually, the second demo from a band gives a better idea to what they
really sound like. What they are looking for in their music, and what
could be said to be "their sound". In the vocals-departement, the way
is clear. Magnus Skarbo chose the path of Antony Kiedis. It is especially
evident in "A Malething", where the whiney vocal-stretching is peaking.
Even the music is somewhat close to Red Hot Chili Peppers, but not too
close. And in "Powerbossa", I find the first and only cow bell break I
have heard!
The roaring guitar-walls are not gone, but they are scarce, and a lot
lighter. The steam-roller has been traded for a Chevy. The single, even
sometimes acoustic, guitar riffs are still there, though this time they
are guided by the bass (Erik Arner), which has received more attention.
Definitely an improvement; it provides a safe ground for the other
instruments to stand on, and it is so good it is impossible not to tap your
feet to.

The first thing I did when I learned about this band from Gothenburg,
was to go to their homepage and download a sound sample. But I was
disappointed. Disappointed because all I got was a lot of twanging noise
and it sounded like everything had a dist-box connected to it. Then I
received this demo, and to my surprise, that was the way it was supposed
to sound! Almost. It is the pieces between walls of noise, where Helene
sings, that I like. Even though there really is a bit of distortion on
her voice there sometimes, it is nothing compared to when the guitars,
also distorted, break loose. She has got a pretty voice, why put dist
on it?
Talking about her voice, I would draw parrallells to Cecilia in Souls
and a bit of Karin in Honey Is Cool, and that is enough to make me want
to hear more. I would call the music experimental, not quite with a clear
direction or background, and I think that is what they need to find, and
define. I know it is there somewhere, because sometimes everything falls
into place, and it sounds really great. Like the long instrumental end of
"Train".

It is really hard not to write a good review to this demo. It would be
better to just surrender and say that it is utterly fantastic, and that it
is no wonder that seven or eight record labels called them up the same day
they received it in the mail. Nina Natri's voice is so appealing, special
and beautiful. Sometimes in what could be described as a finnish accent.
Climbing high mountains, just to fall down into a crack the next second.
It sounds so honest, and it _is_ so honest. I can not think of anyone that
would not fall in love with it.
And the music. What can really be said about drifting, slow, effect-boxed
electric guitars that just goes on forever and ever, and then they turn into
alarming, screaming walls of sturdy concrete when you think you are safe?
And what can you say about "Stop Losing" that starts like a "Svensktoppen"
song, but evolves into a nasty guitar-filled monster, just like the one you
always thought was hiding under your bed? It even ends with Nina purring
like a cat!
And when I hear a few lines to "Hoovering Away", everything is totally clear
to me; "I am hoovering you away 'cos, I can't stand you around me no more. I
am hoovering you away 'cos, frankly I don't know if I should give a damn
anymore." Fidget will hoover away! Everything and everyone that stands in
their way of conquering the world. On their way up in the sky of successful
bands. And for me it is too soon! Though I hope they will stay in touch with
us down here.

I got this demo a long time ago, and never found the time to review it.
But better late than never, right? Right! Here we have swedish music with
swedish lyrics. Swedish music because it is so close to the music created
by godfather Mauro Scocco, both in the old Ratata days and the new solo
days. Everything is made with synthesizers, and it is clearly easy-listening
pop that one expects to hear on swedish national radio P3 on a rainy sunday
morning. Even the vocals are close to Mauro. But I feel I have to get
Adolphson & Falk in here somewhere too, because everything gives me that
Stockholm-feeling in my gut, just like they did once. I must say that this
is beautiful music, even though it is very different from everything else
(yet) reviewed here.

Scandinavian Indie Review:
Uppsala shows itself to be a town to be reckoned with. When I got the
cassette, I had only heard rumours about Tongue Gongue. The rumours said
that they were a killer live band, and that they played Ska. Today, I can
only say that the second rumour is true. In May, when they play in Linkoping,
I will know the rest.
Unfortunately my Ska-knowledge is pretty limited, but I do know that this
is Ska. Happy Ska infact. Quick, whiney vocals that are clear and crisp.
Professional even. A fast beat, with everything to give one that carnival
feeling, you know? It sways. It makes you smile. It makes you wonder if it
is already summer outside if you open the blinds - two months early? It all
sounds so professional that I have to agree with the other ones that have
reviewed this demo; where is the record contract?

I wasn't planning on buing Kent's new album "Verkligen", but when
I went to Pet Sounds last week they had some copies of the LP
version (ltd to 300) that were autographed. Wooo-boy... that brought
out the vinyl fetishist in me again, I picked one up right away. Can
you smell collector's item :)
I have mixed feelings about it though. It is a good album, no doubt
about it, where the single "Kr{m" and some other fast tracks stand
out. However there are also some slow ballad-like songs that don't
do much for me.
Then I read the album reviews in SvD's weekend special City, where
Madeleine Levy gave it six out of six possible, and called it
"probably one of the best Swedish albums ever". Now that is
ridiculuous... poor girl, from now on her credibilty equals zilch.
What do other people think?

Wow, I hear the Bob Hund records are (were) available on
vinyl too? Anyone know of mailorder companies that still
carry indierock-pop type label and/or major label stuff
on vinyl here in Sweden? I know a few who carry garage/trash/surf
stuff on vinyl, tho.

Well, I think Kent reminds me too much of Uno Svenningson and
his worthless band "Freda'" which isn't a good thing at all.

Bob Hunds album is availible on vinyl as is a 7" with some early versions
of edvin medvind and two others i think, (haven't listened to it in a whila
actually). The album can be obtained from Marcus Torncrantz (for those of
you with web access you can find his adress at the bob hund page on Benno
http;//www.mc.hik.se/benno - its under bands somewhere). It's cheaper than
the CD and it sounds better so there's no reason for not getting it. The 7"
is out on diletante and i think it's far gone by now.
For record stores i definitly recommend Freak Scene in Stockholm for the
best selection of real indie-stuff, and i assume Pet Sounds got more major
label junk but i'm not sure since it's not realy my bag.
i'll get back to you with some adresses...

Yeah, you're quite right. And I've got some news for you: incredible
as it may sound, I finally managed to overcome my colossal lack of
competence and actually got myself organized enough for a brief
moment. Hence I have the pleasure and privilege to announce that the
Finnish tape is on its way to the first recipient as we speak. It will
start its world tour in the US west coast, after which there will be a
one-off appearance in the UK, and finally a number of appointments in
Sweden.
Sorry about being such a slacker... but if you knew about some of my
other 'projects' you'd know this is nothing unusual... :)

Hi there.
here's some news/gossip/rumours about recent/forthcoming record
releases in Finland.
Pansies have released their second full-length last week, the title
being "Fancy the Pansies". It sounds better than their previous effort
to me, at least judging by the couple of tracks I've heard. They have
a sort of 'softer' sound these days. Maybe they have been listening to
Cardigans too. Hmm.
There will be a new Aknestik album out this month (good news for
Robert C. :) ) - it's called "Saatiedotuksia merenkulkijoille' ('weather
forecasts for seamen'), if memory serves. Usually they have a
pre-album single too, but so far I haven't run into it.
Larry & The Lefthanded are releasing their debut full-length this
month too. How lo-fi can they go this time? Time will tell.
Candy Darling are said to be practising hard for recording their debut
album, but this is only hearsay.
Kitchen Sink have a new line-up and will record a single for Tangerine
this spring.
The debut releases by Fridge were postponed because they needed to
re-mix the whole stuff again. Maybe either the EP of the CD is out
already at this point, I don't know.
Supperheads will have a new single too on Tangerine sometime this
spring.
I guess that wraps it up for today... I think there was something else
I was going to mention, but I can't think clearly, as I am enjoying a
rigorous hangover (in case you must know).
