List-meet? I really like their single "Not an Addict" but that's the only

Hey, if you've been on this list for a while, you might have noted that we
conversate on _english_!!! It's not very polite to our foreign subscribers
(as i've pointed out before), if you thought about it for a second or
two...
No, i don't know of Blixas new productions, but call up Sonet(/Mute in
Sweden), they should know something.
And chief, i know you're against moderating, but is there no way to bounce
back messages in swedish, saying "please write that again, but this time in
a language that all of us understand!"

Scandinavian Indie SELECTED NEWS Scandinavian Indie
February 23rd, 1996
Contents:
Cloudberry Jam, Hultsfred Festival 96, Kent, Ray Wonder, Salt.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cloudberry Jam - (NONS) have planned a release party in good old Link|ping
for the upcoming album "Providing The Atmosphere". The
event is planned for March 20th. Some unmentionable people
wanted the party to be held in Stockholm, for obvious
reasons, but the band didn't share that view. While in
Japan (Jennie and Henrik) promoting their new album, they
also got to DJ at one of the "in" clubs in Tokyo called
"Electronic Cafe" and finally managed to get their hands
on the Japanese version of their previous album, which
none of them had before, strangely enough. Warner/Chappell
Music Scandinavian have signed a co-publishing- and option-
agreement with Fish Up Publishing, the publishing firm
for North Of No South, and therefore, Cloudberry Jam.
British Unimedia Productions have booked a load of Swedish
bands to play at the Dublin Castle club in London, and
the first band to play there is.. yes, you guessed it,
Cloudberry Jam. (Source: Sin, Topp40)
Hultsfred Festival 96 - have, for the first year, permission to keep the
festival open around the clock. This is of course
good news for the new dance-tent, which replaces
the Sahara stage this year. (Source: Topp40)
Kent - (BMG) received an award in the category "Best Group" at the annual
Swedish Grammy awards held February 19th. They also appeared "live"
(playback) at the awards, performing the song "Frank". The members
of the band had different opinions about if the prize was important
to them or not. Joakim Berg (vocals) said it wasn't, and Sami Sirvi|
(guitar) said it was, though reports from the after-party said that
the band "misplaced" their award. Their new single "Kr{m" was released
on February 19th as well. A video for the song "Kr{m" exists, and was
first shown on ZTV February 16th in the program "Tryck Till", where
it got a "sv{nger" review, which means that they think that it will
be a hit. (Source: Topp40, ZTV, SVT 1)
Ray Wonder - (NONS) and Cardigans tour on Iceland right now has been
preceded by a high interest from the icelandic media. Ray
Wonder has been played up to 70 times/day on the radio and
last monday, the icelandic national radio had a "Ray Wonder Day"
and played everything they could find by the band. Both bands
arrived yesterday and were met by the swedish ambassadeur, who
took them on a round trip of Iceland. Apart from the gigs,
press and tv, they will also have two recreational days with
scooter-riding and baths in thermal springs. (Source: Topp40)
Salt - (MVG) as you know, got a visit from ZTV at the Tower Records/Costa Mesa
gig. They recorded the whole concert and then rode on the tour bus with
the band to Fullerton to interview them. Their manager, Jeff, said that
"the piece should be interesting and full of Salt's impressions of the
US after their first week of gigs." and that "the tour is going great
and the response to Salt at all of the shows has been brilliant".
The single "Bluster" took two steps up on the Billboard Modern Rock
Tracks list from place 26 to 24. (Source: Sin)

Umm, well, Claes, as I understand it, (who isn't on the list right now due to
some e-mail problems) recently subscribed (and is the head of Funbase, one of
Sweden's first "own Compuserve"s on the Internet in the field of entertainment
in Sweden (that is, music news, club news, record reviews etc..)), and it's
great that you all tell him what the deal is with the mailing list, but
please, try to avoid posting such things to the list. Direct such things
personally to the one who posted the message. That would keep the mailing
list clean from apparent non-relevant discussions like the one's we've had
lately regarding fake mail and use of language.
> And chief, i know you're against moderating, but is there no way to bounce

I'm not a unix script-junkie myself, so I have no idea if there's a way
or not, but if someone on the list would like to help me out with such
a script, I would be more than happy to use it. I'll add a line to the
"Welcome to the mailing list" stating that the language used on the list
is English though, and I would have taken care of that message if I hadn't
been too busy studying, not checking my e-mail for two days. :-/
Sorry about all the trouble,

I second that. Gino is definitely my favourite hang-out when I'm
in Stockholm. I've been through so many things there, actually from
the day it first opened, that it almost feels like a second home. :-)
Studion is kinda nice too - I've never had a bad time there, and it's
kind of small and cosy..

hmm, so by your defintion "college rock" is not what the people attending
college listens to but what the djs at the college radio stations likes
to play.. so, who makes up the largest part of a college, the students
attending the college or the djs at the college radio station..?
and if what you're saying about college radio stations not playing bands
that have been on mtv etc is true then we are agreeing that neither seam
nor superchunk are "college rock", because they have both been on mtv

Scandinavian Indie SELECTED NEWS Scandinavian Indie
February 26th, 1996
Contents:
Able, Bj|rk, Drain, Emmaboda Festival 96, Grammy Awards, Kent, Naked, Puffin,
Salt, Shallow.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Able - plans to start recording an album in April at Toodle Recordings
in Link|ping. No release date is set yet. The band will also appear
on the frequently mentioned Dorian Records compilation CD, soon
to be released (?). (Source: Sin)
Bj|rk - received the "babe of the year 1995" award by UK magazine "Select".
(Source: Aftonbladet)
Drain - (MVG) were in Los Angeles, USA this weekend, and recorded a video
directed by Wayne Isham (who has directed videos with everything
from Metallica to Whitney Houston). (Source: Expressen)
Emmaboda Festival 96 - (August 9 - 10), news (although not from the
arrangers): Artists ready as of today includes:
Brick, Chester Copperpot, Starmarket and Stereolab.
(Source: Minna/Super, Sin)
Grammy Awards - in Sweden: Expressen reports from the after-party that
Popsicle's "bad boy" Fredrik Norberg tried to pick up
Kajsa Mellgren, but had to give up, and that Frans
Johansson (Fireside) circled around Robyn.
(Source: Expressen)
Kent - (BMG) used five (!) stuntmen when recording the video to "Kr{m"
for one scene - the one where Joakim Berg jumps from V{sterbron.
Linda Norrman-Skugge at Expressen listed the contents on her pre-hand
tape of the upcoming Kent album. 27 titles were listed. Can that
really be true? If it is, then D. Shutrick and Henrik De La Cour
appear in two songs. (Source: Minna/Super, Expressen)
Naked - from Denmark (yes, we can all see what's coming.. "Naked Sweden"?)
have their own fan club and with that, their own homepage. You'll
find it at: http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/3906. (Source: Sin)
Puffin - (West Side) has a new member. Who, you ask? Well, if you have seen
the band live, you probably know who he is - Eskil L|vstr|m
(trombone, keyboards). (Source: Sin)
Salt - (MVG) are still touring the US. Expressen reports that a number
of gigs are sold out weeks ahead and that they are treated like real
rock stars. They also mention that Pat Smear (Foo Fighters) checked
out the gig in Los Angeles. (Source: Expressen)
Shallow - from Gothenburg are, after receiving the news about the number
of "Shallow"s out there, thinking about "making a Verve", that is,
changing their name to "The Shallow". The band will also be included
on the upcoming compilation from Dorian Records (where Aquadays
also will be represented) with the song "Hyper", Sin's favourite
song on their demo tape reviewed last week. (Source: Sin)

I saw that list too, and after reading the titles of all the songs that were
listed, I thought it kind of obvious that it was a joke on the expense of
Joakim's kitchen-sink social-realism kind of writing style. (And a funny
one, too - Linda does have a sense of humour underneath all that posing.)

Hey hey hey... one have to admit that the largest part of students
where ever they are have an extremly dull music taste... as Carl
pointed out (in his Wannadies review) all around him was listening to
Michael Bolton and liked it (well not not a the Wannadies gig.. you
know what I mean ;-) ) , and if someone are going to call Michael
Bolton for college rock I'm going to scream...very LOUD So I think the
definition of college rock as what is played on the college radio as
fair enough... even though that can be quite misleading too ;-)

And so what... ;-) if you only want to play bands there haven't been on
MTV you would have to watch MTV (or know someone who does it) and that
will be even worse...;-) for Gods sake ignore MTV. If you only can figure
out how to bye records if you have seen the video first then you do
have a problem ;-) The good old DK song "MTV get off the air" is
apparently still needed for educating the youth of today :-D
Okay okay I guess you all agree... it's just when I see the three
lettes M T V the anger is growing in me... just like with the word
Microsoft :-) Well enough ramblings for today... if you think I sound
like a bitter young man you're right... I left my bed to early this

Could be a wise one... as long they don't have to called Shallow SE as
the Charlatans UK.... But actually I don't think that the little "the"
does any difference, people will still be confused. the "Mojave 3 "

The Finnish band Penniless People Of Bulgaria (on West Side) are
starting a monstrous European tour of two months (!) very soon. Their
latest album, 'Velocity' got a rave review in the leading Finnish rock
mag Rumba; and I think some people (Erik S. & Robert C. ?) liked their
latest single too... anyway, if you want to check them out, see the
tour dates listed on the PPOB web page. I forget the exact URL, but
there's a link on my 'Finnish Indie Bands' page at:

In their case I'd have gone for 'Sallow' or 'Tallow' -- both nice
words that hardly ever get used for anything, let alone band names.
I'm a bit worried about Cessna myself -- the commercial world are
worse on these things than other bands are. I'm thinking of the
nicely-named Captain America who had to change to Eugenius, of all
things...
"Robert Cumming Sthlm" (just being safe),
who'd be listening to Shack's 'Waterpistol' if he had a stereo
here -- an utterly _fantastic_ album, even if it is British...

I agree... I think in the Verve/The Verve case it was the famed record
label that didn't like the use of the name, not another band.
* the "Mojave 3 " trick was a bit bit more elegant and less confusing
Indeed... and if my memories from the 80's are clear enough, The Beat
having to change their name to The English Beat for the US
market... also, the Finnish band Greenhouse AC had to think of
something when they, shortly after releasing their first single,
discovered that there already three other bands named Greenhouse (or
The Greenhouse) in existance...nowadays there are even a couple more,
I was told :)

Yeah, we're going for the 'any publicity is good publicity' thang;
after they sue us we will be called Excessna, of course... :)

I don't even know why there is a debate about this! There is a VERY
definite term, universally used in the industry, called "college radio".
College radio is well-documented in the publication CMJ (College Music
Journal).....we're talking about university radio stations here! The term
college rock simply refers to those bands played on college radio. Trust
me. It can encompass Superchunk and Seam, as well as stuff that now
enjoys rotation on commercial radio like R.E.M. and Live (these 2 bands
are still played on college radio stations - not all, but plenty; just
check the CMJ).

IMHO, i'm not to fond of numbers in band names. It's ok for Front 242, it's
sort of anonymous, unpersonal, fitting for an electro act, but not for
ex-Slowdive's warm soft music. And that "3" always reminds me of the
abysmal Timbuk 3. Yuck!
so my advice to Shallow: do what you want, but leave the numbers.

Just like the extremely cheesy XC-NN (used to be CNN until them lawyers at
the TV channel found out).

Okeydokey, college radio debate settled.
Right now The Cardigans are getting a lot of airplay on US college
radio. They're up high on playlists both on the east- and westcoast.
At my university they've held the no 2 slot for three weeks! Right
now only Cibo Matto's 'VIVA! La Woman' is more popular.
Not the success like hundreds of thousands records sold in Japan or
the media hype like in Iceland, but still ;-)

Nope - it's the darn truth.

I talked to Jennie today, and she said it is on April 19th. She asked if
I didn't want to go with them, though I don't think I can afford it, but
who knows?

That she didn't know unfortunately. I guess they'll have more information
on it in this week's issue of Topp40 (thursday) - if not, I'll see what
I can find out elsewhere.

If you find out - information about the club, where it is, what it's like
and so on, please post the information to the list, as the band wanted
to know more about the place too. Jennie has never been to London before,
so she's not likely to know. :-)

Just found this on another list I'm filling my mailbox with:
//Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se)
CONCERT REVIEW: The Cardigans, Huxley's, Berlin
- Tim Mohr
Returning to Berlin for their first concert in a proper venue, the
Cardigans stimulated a minor frenzy in musical circles, many of which overlap
when it comes to this Swedish band. Looking at the band work through the
opening number, you'd think it was the Who or Fugazi bobbing, kicking,
and jumping about. Close your eyes and the sound is utterly incongruous: silly
melodies based on a skipping guitar and a tiny organ.
After the opening two songs, Nina Persson addresses the sell-out
crowd for the first time: "We are the Cardigans. We are from Sweden. We are
not easy listening if that's what you were expecting."
As Henry Miller could help to explain about the tiny blonde
chanteuse, "Hers was the typical cold seductive charm of the Northern woman
in whom prudery and lasciviousness battle for supremacy." Except that the
battle rages largely in the audience for, though she seems without vulgarity
of her own, the audience is certainly affected by a deeply carnal star
presence. Impossibly earnest, cheeks highlighted with dimples, twirling one
arm in a spritely indie-dance, the singer bewitches the audience with
absolutely no effort, or rather - even more astonishing - while steadfastly
refusing to do so.
"This is an indie-pop song." The Cardigans run through one of their
brilliantly peppy tunes. "We're so indie that I hope you don't confuse us
with Oasis," says Persson with the first and only hint of irony displayed by
the band. The Cardigans sprinkle their big singles "Carnival," "Sick &
Tired," and "Hey! Get Out Of My Way" through the set, not bothering to save
them for the encore.
You keep expecting them to cover "Puff the Magic Dragon" but instead
they do Thin Lizzy and Ozzy. They turn in a medley of their own "Celia
Inside" and "The Boys Are Back in Town." Such whimsy delivered with utter
sincerity is rare.
The five Cardigans exit the stage amidst a lingering rasp of guitar
and bass that results from a minute of rock extremity tacked onto the end of
one of their infectious but harmless songs, but are beckoned back for two
encores. Taking the stage for the second encore, Nina Persson explains, "We
don't know any more songs. So we're going to borrow one from our good friends
Black Sabbath. It's called `Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and it's *really*
serious."
