Yesterday when I was taking a bath I suddenly turned over and said very
loudly to myself: what the fuck has happened to the very great band Bob
Hund! I didn't hear anyone answer me so I got out of the bath and watched
some TV.
I wonder does anyone out there know anything interesting about Bob Hund?
'cause in here it sure is way too quiet.
One snowball to you each, Mats

Don't miss CLOUDBERRY JAM tomorrow (friday) on Z-TV (Pop-Tv Live), starting
at 16:00. There will be a "live" performance as well as an interview made
at the release party here in Link|ping two days ago (where the interviewer,
Staffan, was a bit drunk and didn't know what to ask, and had to call in
a guy from SA to ask questions. I think the only question Staffan asked
was "what did you think about the Pulp interview in SA" or something like
that.. at least that's what _he_ told me himself, poor fella. :-))
The interview was made in the kitchen of the place "Bar & K|k", which
has a small window, where one could watch the whole thing. Well..
it was a nice event, and I'll tell more about it later when I have the
time. The band did not play though, because the neigbours complained about
live music (and especially Live Drums) so they had another band "Ship of Fools"
a Hip-hop band who did the scratching on CBJ's latest album, there, with
only sampled drums, which apparently was okay with the neigbours.
Anyway, I'm off to see Naked now, and I have an exam on saturday, which
means that I have yet not had the time to answer or check ANY email
since March 7th. Please bear with me - I'm doing my best to cope.
Oh, and about 500k worth of email disappeared, due to bad sectors on the
harddrive at Lysator, during this time as well, but please wait at least
another week, before re-sending your messages (if any), so I get time
enough to answer the ones I did get (3.5 MB...).
Well, I'll be back on saturday with all the lists and news and whatever
as usual.

There's probably going to be another album in a not too distant future.
Yesterday, at a friend's place, I heard a raw mix on tape of a pretty
new song called "Ist{llet F|r Musik: F|rvirring". Well what do you say...
a typical Bob Hund song title. And it's truly great, vintage Bob Hund
so to say.
They're going to shoot a video for it next week, and Pat Scab of
Teddybears (in)fame will most likely be directing it.
Btw, did anyone see Kent's "secret" gig at Hannas Krog in Stockholm last
night? I had heard it was supposed to start at 10-10:30 but they started
already around 9 so I came too late... grrrr. Besides all the usual
popsicles and teddybears and yvonnes and cinnamons it was good to see
Di Leva hitting the bars again. Haven't seen him in awhile, and felt kind
of worried about him :)

I got the impression that at least the one from Finland was ready to
be launched already in January.

I've heard that there will be an album in april and and a swedish tour in
May. . I'm used to go to at least one concert a week and I must say that
there is very few band with bob's energy and standards. I want Bob!

Nina (of Salt) told me that she got engaged in January (after we spotted
the ring on her finger during the gig), so naturally I asked who the
lucky guy was. So she tells me that: "she's someone I met in Stockholm".
Well, it was only "natural" to ask who the guy was, but the answer
actually crated a moment of silence. It sure had been worse if I had
asked who the lucky _girl_ was, don't you all agree? Anyway, they're
going to be married this summer!
Hopefully one will get an invitation. :-)

Subject: Ludo X and shameless selfplug-stuff
Hi!
Hmmm... how the "#!% does one say "i fredags" in english? "Last friday"
sounds like a friday a week ago, and "this friday" sounds like next
friday... hmm... well, two days ago :) (or three or more depending on
when you read this... sigh...) we (that's Lousy, the band I'm in) played
in Vaxjo with Ludo X from Kopenhamn, Denmark, and the Tambourines from
Vaxjo, Sweden, and, well, here are some thoughts about it:
the place (named Cafe Kristina)
--------------------------------
Kind of a cool place, sort of like the Emmaboda festival (named
"Rasslebygd") but indoors. Kind of small, there were like 125 people
there and it was CROWDED. Most of them were seventeen year old girls,
the perfect Lousy-audience. :) We got free homebrewn beer (named
"Rasslebrygd"...). And the payment was alright.
the Tambourines
---------------
They sounded very, very, very sixties. Very indeed. They looked very,
very, very sixties. And I think I must have stolen one of their very,
very, very sixties shirts (well, I know I stole it, but I'm not really
sure if it belonged to them...). And though I've washed it in very hot
water, it still smells very much like someone has been sweating in it
since the sixties... Oh well, anyways - I didn't like them, they just
sounded like an average sixties band. If you like average sixties bands,
you'll probably like them. They'll be playing at the Emmaboda festival,
BTW. And they're self-releasing a CD soon.
Lousy
-----
Well.. er... since I didn't see them I can't review them, can I :) We
got drunk afterwards. REALLY drunk. As in REALLY, REALLY, REALLY drunk.
It was great FUN!!! :)
Ludo X
------
They were SOOOO good! Especially Filip, the keyboard-guy! Well, I
didn't see any of the others and I didn't hear much of them either
because I sat in the dressing-room (along with the rest of Lousy), a
room that also worked as the main wardrobe for the place, and as the
stage for Filip, the keyboard-guy. He had to stand in there with all
his cool old syntheseizers (hmmm, did I spell that correct? Geez, I'm
the keyboard-guy in our band and I don't even know how to spell the
things correctly...) and play, because the real stage was too small.
In between songs (and sometimes in the middle of songs when he didn't
play) he handed out people's clothes. It sure was a cool sight! So from
what I heard, they sounded like Jean-Michel Jarre teaming up with Yvonne
to play some intrumental Ned's Atomic Dustbin songs. It sounded great!
I'll buy their record next time I'm... well, buying records. :) I'll
probably be dissapointed. :) They'll be playing at the Emmaboda festival
too. So will we, BTW.
Emmaboda festival
-----------------
Inside information: they're trying to get Superchunk, Guided by Voices
and... well, they mentioned a couple of other bands but I don't remember
them, sorry. :) And if you've ever wondered why they call themselves
"Vinterbadarna" (=the Winther Bathers), you need not wonder any more,
here's the incredibly boring story behind it: in the winther they go
abroad to bath. Hmmm...
I know this guy who used to knark (=use drugs) for a while and then he
got constant diarrhoea. Think about that. If I'm not mistaken, Ludo X
are thinking about it right now. It's one of the main reasons Lousy says
no to knark (=drugs). That was a public announcement, I think. Oh yeah,
and now we know what we're going to say when we win a Grammis award some
day (HAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, sure!!!). We'll say "this just proves that there
are too many knarkers (=dopeheads) in the music industry". And we'll name
a couple of them. HAHAHAHAHA!!! :) And then we'll pee on the famous people
in the front row! That'll be cool! Hmm... maybe we'll skip the peeing
part... I'll try to sell the idea to Rednex, though. :) They'll probably
win a Grammis before we do... :)
I hope you'll excuse me for the length of this mail, I couldn't like stop
myself. If you've read this far you're probably tired of reading this by
now, so I won't go on any further. :)
Take care,
Magnus
Oh yeah, and all danes don't understand swedish better than swedes
understand danish. :)

Matt + others,
Hi there. This is my first posting to this list. I am a Cardigans fan on
Nicolas Moch's list - he passed this address on to me.
I heard Stina on BBC Radio 1's Mark Radcliffe show one night about a month
ago. The style was similar to that of the Cardigans - that's why I noticed
it. Nicolas wasn't able to help me, and I didn't think to post it to this
list until now! Any more info on Stina would be appreciated.

James

I'm almost through the e-mail now, and have updated all the Gig Guides

The goal is to have all the pages updated by Wednesday morning -
but don't panic if that doesn't happen. :-)
Demo/CD reviews will be added last, due to the actually surprising
amount of CDs and Demos this month. No, probably the "Selected News"
will be last by the way. Oh well, we'll see what happens.
Thursday will bring Fidget to an interview, which I hope I'm not alone
in finding interesting - and the interview will be posted during the
weekend (if not on friday - I'm trying to get these things working
okay).
Well, that's about wraps it up for me.

Stina has 2 full-length albums that I know of: 1991's "Memories of a
Color" (Warner/East-West) and a more recent one called "And she closed
her eyes". she has also worked with Fleshquartet (a project with Jon
Hassell). Her two albums are different. I *greatly* prefer "Memories of a
Color", and I can easily see why a Cardigans fan might take a liking to
Stina. Both Nina Persson and Stina Nordenstam have very light, sweet
vocals. The music is equally easy-listening too, but Stina's music is
more dark, dreamy, ambient-jazzy pop while Cardigans are light, happy,
jazzy pop........see the difference? "And she closed her eyes" is sadder
sounding than the other one, plus her vocals are so much drier (hardly
any effects on there) and her vocal delivery is much more flat. Frankly,
I think the second album is boring in comparison to the first. Mats,
James, buy "Memories of a Color"!
As for what she is up to now, I remember SOMEONE posting to scan-indie a
few months ago (maybe even longer), saying she was working with a band
called Blue For Two now. Anyone heard of them? A friend of mine in
Uppsala says they're pretty good.
Well, that's all I know. I think Stina has some singles too, but I don't
got 'em......hell, I'm still working on getting some Cardigans albums
from Pet Sounds!

Yep - me too. Didn't get the name of the song though. But it's a new one -
not from 'Memories...' or 'And she...'. And she's doing it together with
Vangelis, about whom I know absolutely nada, exept for that he's been around
since Stonehenge...

Might just be plain confusion there. I'm not sure I'll get this right, but I
think it's something like this: Freddy Wadling is/was in Blue for Two, and
he's now appearing with the Fleshquartet. There you go. Might just be a
mistake. And yes Blue for Two are/were (split?) pretty good - at least a
couple of years ago when I used to listen to them. I still think Freddy W
has *the* coolest voice in r'n'r history.
BTW, have you checked the list of appearances on 'And she closed her eyes'?
Quite impressive - Popsicle are there playing guitars and basses on a few
tracks, and guess who else? The Fleshquartet! (Might be this cooperation the
above is referring to)
Bliss! Easter break imminent! Back to Svedala for three weeks! Yippee! Only
drawback is that I'll miss *a few* good concerts. e.g. Sonic Youth, Aimee
Mann, Thurston M accoustic set, Cloudberry Jam, Beck... Wish I were
schizofrenic and could split between home and London!
Oh well. Ho hum.

Not quite. Stina contributed vocals to a beatiful song on the Fleshquartet's
last (?) album. It got some airplay, and was, I believe, the most widely
known song off that album. That might be the origin of all this confusion,
but who knows? BTW, I like her 2nd album a whole lot better than her first.
The production on _Memories Of A Colour_ is at times *really* dreadful. Yikes!
Johan.
And my apologies to Carl for sending this message to him first instead of to
the list.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion (of course!) but what the hell is
wrong with the production on "Memories of a Color"??? Sounds first-rate
to me! I find production problems with the OTHER one. I for one don't
appreciate the sound of totally dry vocals, esp. when when you're talking
about someone with as thin a voice as Stina.

So, someone have heard a new song from Stina Nordenstam, right? Well, do any-
body know if she´s going to do a new album?
I know that Vangelis have done an album called Voices where Stina sings one
song (Ask the mountains) and have written one song. Have anybody heared it?
What is the rest of the album like?
This is the third thing. I personally think that Stinas second album was
better than the first, maybe much better. It is just more interesting (and
she stood closer to the mic). But I can´t understand the guy who said that
the first album was badly produced. How did you notice?
The second album got some difficult lyrics though. Is there anybody who
dares to interpret any of the songs. I have read the article about Stina in
POP so if you interpret, do not cheat

Scandinavian Indie SELECTED NEWS Scandinavian Indie
March 27th, 1996
by Erik S|derstr|m (chief@lysator.liu.se)
"Remember where you heard it first"
Contents:
Able, Bluetones, Broder Daniel, Cloudberry Jam, CNR Music, Easy, Fidget,
Hultsfred Festival 96, Roskilde Festival 96.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Able - (H.Lime) will start to record their debut album in the middle of may
at Toodle Recordings in Link|ping with J|rgen W{rnstr|m (Cloudberry
Jam) behind the wheel. The plan is to have it ready after a month,
and release it in August. A single will also be released a few weeks
later. The band will appear on the Lule} H|gskole festival, May 11th.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Bluetones - is not a swedish band, but when they play in Stockholm at
Studion later tonight (27/3) together with Velvet Belly
from Norway, there's an opening act, consisting of ex-members
of the swedish band Easy! (Source: Magnus Johansson)
Broder Daniel - have released a video to their new song "Work". And what
can one say but that the out-of-tune vocals are gone and
that it really sounds like pop these days. (Source: Z-TV)
Cloudberry Jam - (NONS) who released their album "Providing The Atmosphere"
last tuesday spent a day in Stockholm last friday, making
an interview for swedish radio P3's program Musikjournalen
(broadcasted yesterday) and appearing on ZTV's program
Pop TV Live (two songs, an interview and a "report" from
the release party) the same day. The band spent the whole
day today making interviews for various radio stations
around the country. They are also scheduled to appear on
swedish television's program N|jesrevyn on April 25th,
but before that, they will play in London, UK on April
19th, at the Dublin Castle Club, as mentioned earlier in
this "column". (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
CNR Music - the swedish label where, among others, The Merrymakers has
found a home, are soon joining the rising number of labels
connected to/on the Internet. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Fidget - released a new demo friday last week, which caught the ears
of many record labels - and resulted in a massive phone attack
on their manager Hansi Friberg. Even the vice president for the
whole Warner group of companies, plus the guy who "discovered"
Robyn took it upon themselves to call. On April 12th, the band
will play in Stockholm as opening act for Ocean Colour Scene,
and the audience will be joined by people from about eight
record companies, including two british ones. Which is to say
that they will be signed really soon. On the publishing side,
the band is already signed to MCA. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)
Hultsfred 96 - the festival added three names to their list of artists
appearing this year today: Ministry, Sick of it All and
Emmylou Harris. Looks like a it's going to be the best
one yet. (Source: Z-TV Nytt)
Roskilde 96 - the festival added a bunch of new artists last week.
Bj|rk (ISL), Frank Black (US), Chumbawamba (UK), D|crefors|g
(DK), The Fall (UK), Pop Will Eat Itself (UK), Pretty Maids
(DK), Sex Pixtols (UK), Tindersticks (UK). (Source: Roskilde

I suppose we'll have to turn up pretty early if they're to get through
two support bands and the Bluetones before 11 o'clock...

I guess I could have been a bit more clear on that point. I don't think it's
BADLY produced (meaning that it's full of production flaws, like drop-outs
and such), I think the sound that the producer achieved left a lot to be
desired. In short, I don't like the way that album sounds. It's slick,
predictable, professional, and boring. So, here's your chance, flame away :)
Johan.
BTW, I'd give Stina extra credit for being the only (?) woman in Swedish
"rock" to use snuff (= snusa)...

Oh, you're one of those "lo-fi" guys! You prefer low-effort,
un-professional, type recordings ;-) Well, yeah, "Memories of a color" is
decidedly NOT lo-fi. However, the term "slick" is relative, y'know. To
me, slick production can be found on Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, and Bon
Jovi records. I don't get that kinda feeling from Stina's album at all.
Of her two albums, I find "Memories of a color" to be engaging and very
well-written, song-wise. "And she closed her eyes" is the boring one, to me.
It's certainly a minimalist recording in comparison.....there just ain't
that much going on to keep my interest (much less instrumentation). Plus,
I'm sorry, her vocal delivery is bordering on monotone on "And she closed
her eyes". The vocal melodies are far more inventive and memorable on
"Memories....." (IMHO, of course).
Important: this wasn't intended as a flame.....I just didn't want people
who haven't heard her to get the wrong impression. I don't find the album
"slick" in a bad sense, and believe me, I generally hate top 40, popular
music....I *will* agree "Memories of a Color" is
the more commercial of the 2 discs, but I think it's because the songs
are just more memorable and better thought-out. The more I think about
it, it's not so much a case of the production being the issue with me.

Just to straighten things out here, I wasn't the one Chris replied to if
anybody didn't understand that.
Maybe it isn't very much worth to discuss which of Stinas two albums who was
the best. I must say though that I´m surprised to hear that you (Chris) finds
the voice of Stina to be more interesting on the first album. On "And she
closes her eyes" it was her voice that really captured my attension while the
lyrics were doing it on "Memories of a color".
So you say that melodies were memorable on the first album. That I don't
find very surprising. The melodies of the second is just not easy to "sing"
or "hum" to (call it whatever you want), while "Memories" is a bit more
"pop:ier" (I wouldn't call it more commercial, that's the wrong word).
I can't understand that you dislike her second album. Most of the people I
know like both of them, and I find it kind of strange that you don't like
"And she closes...". Stinas style is maybe not that unsual but the style of
the two albums is not very different. What kind of music do you listen to
when you're not playning Stina?
I don't hate top 40, what is popular music for you? Stina is popular music
for me. How would you describe Stinas' music?
