The Dublin Castle is on the Parkway in Camden. If you're coming by tube
you'd take the exit to your right as you come through the ticket barrier.
You'll come out with a set of traffic lights to your left hand side.
Cross over the road and carry on walking straight up the hill. The Dublin
Castle is about a hundred yards on the right hand side of the road.
It's the backroom of a pub. I'm not very good at making estimates at
venue capacities but I'd say 100 to 150 people. With the right amount of
people in there it is pretty good.
I saw the Cardigans play there just as they were starting to get a name
over here. Actually, I saw only the first four songs because it was so
rammed I couldn't bear it any longer.
All in all, I'd say it was a pretty good choice.

Here's a little anecdote for you:
Last time I was in London (April 95) I was supposed to see the Telescopes there.
First we were at some club in Soho called Acoustic Heavenly that Andres Lokko
had praised a lot, and incidentally he was there that very same evening. My
friends thought it was so cool there, that they wanted to hang around until
closing time... which led to that by the time I arrived to the Dublin Castle it
was just in time to hear the last chord of the last song fading out :(
It seemed like a very nice place for concerts though. I'd agree with Sean that
the venue can swallow about 150 persons. If you take into account the adjacent
pub too, it's about the size of Studion in Stockholm.

Well I'm new to this list so let me introduce myself. I'm Jason Sheen from
Texas, I lived in Sweden a couple of years and really got into the scene.
My fav groups are Cardigans, Wannadies, Popsicle, and Kent. Hopefully I'll
be able to get some of those groups in the US sometime soon (I know the
Cardigans have been released here).

Didn't I hear something about Salt's management sending all us
Scan-Indiesters in the USA some special thing via e-mail? It was supposed
to be something regarding their current US tour, right? Well, they play
my neighborhood this weekend, on Sunday. I can't wait!!! Only $7 USD too.
Pretty cheap for an up-and-coming international act. I haven't gotten
anything in the e-mail though, so I was just wondering if anyone else did??

yeah, yeah, whatever, i guess that i am sooking just because superchunk
are just as commercial as madonna or whatever.. one things sure though:
superchunk can also be labelled "indie rock" or "alterna-rock" which
neither live nor rem can be.. so there! :P

Wow someone knows SFS... bloody amazing. They're truly are weirdoes
(from another planet ;-) ). I saw them on the SUB POP Human touch tour
last year (together with 20 other people... and I suspected the place
being packed with grunge kids ;-) ) and that performance can really
best be described as a crossover thing between Kraftwerk and Jesus
Lizard on not-yet-designed drugs... or something like that. I guess it
was ugliest keyboard sound ever made...;-)
BTW aren't we quite far from the Shallow renaming problem now ;-)
Well I've been 15 minutes at the department today... time to leave ;-)

Subject: (Non-scan) K's Choice Sthlm review
Gig review of the belgian band K's Choice at Studion, Stockholm 960228.
-----------
The place was filled to the rim, since it was a free gig sponsored by Sony
and Bandit Radio. Consequently the queue was huge and many never got in.
Myself, i came in at 22.00, and until i'd squeezed myself down by the stage
i had missed the first five songs. I think there were even more people now
than on the over-packed doublebill with Teenage FC/Grant Lee Buffalo last
year.
The singer Sarah Bettens was by our London gig-goers described as
androgynous. Well, i guess you could say that she hasn't much female forms
(thin and pretty short), but she still was very cute and had a great voice.
Much of the point of K's Choice is the "st=E4ms=E5ng" (sorry, don't know the
word in english) when Sarah and her brother (on guitar and backing vocals)
sing together in different harmonies. This was perfecly executed in their
radio hit "Not an Addict" and a few other songs.
I feared that they were going to be a one hit wonder on stage, since i only
had heard this song before the gig, but the material was pretty strong all
over. "Not an Addict" is a calm track, but they also had a more rockier
side. They had a rasta-man on bass (or was it guitar, i have to look at my
photos?), which gave the music more variation. The next single "Mr Freeze"
was a rough one, Sarah really screamed in the chorus, with her white hair
standing on end.
I described them to Marten as "Codeine, with a mixture of Rachel/Slowdive
and Courtney Love on vocals". After seeing the show i have to modify this a
bit.
The vocals are really ethereal, maybe like early Lush, but there's also a
naivity, together with the lyrics; simple love ballads, songs about quit
smoking, small things in your everyday life... I find the lyrics typical to
bands that don't have english as mother tongue, and not so influenced by
UK/US as the swedes. A normal reaction would be: "you can't write a song
about that, that's no subject to sing about".
As a belgian guitar band, i came to think of La Muerte, TC Matic and late
Poesie Noire. As a tribute, i wore my Poesie Noire T-shirt, but of no use,
since the wardrobe was full and i had to stand with my jacket during the
whole show. :P
The mood at Studion was kinda happy in way that made you feel glad and warm
inside, Sarah said that "when i was still in Belgium and heard that we were
going to play here, i expected it to come maybe 10 people or so..." So the
band was in an up mood, and that made the crowd cheer as well. There was
some movement down in the pit, and a bunch could even sing the lyrics.
Of course, if you've had to pay entrance, not half of the audience would
have come, but we had a good time anyway.
They're going down to Germany and the rest of the mainland Europe now, I
guess they'll come back sometime if all goes well.
Sorry that you didn't get in Ulf, Marten and Johan, but i think you'll get
a second chance.

Well, no one has mentioned the new issue of SA yet, so I guess I better do
it then. :-) It arrived on friday last week (they did say "in february"
when I talked to them last time, so they were only 1 day late :-))
and came with a flexi with Tia (featuring Brainpool) and Merrymakers.
And apart from the demo, retro, single and album reviews there are
articles on: Pulp, Tia, Smashing Pumpkins, Fireside (with some, umm, funny
notes about Herrg}r'n here in Link|ping), Lloyd Cole. And short articles
on: Merrymakers, Duffy, Millencolin, Cast, Cinnamon, Ash, Lag Wagon,
Trampolines, Menswear.
Plus, Jennie Medin's (Cloudberry Jam) diary from their Japan tour last
august, which is pretty funny. :-)
Demo reviews: Jaune, Dorseys, Brilliant Mistakes, Bumper, Ed Surl,
Lilybleach, Entertainment Weekly, Lip Service, Penicoat Lane,
Arnie, Tongue Gongue, Slumber Party, Tellyyard, The Did,
Mickey Down Under, and, Mutts who were "demo of the winter".
And the Mojave 3 "Ask Me Tomorrow" review included a "Hi" to Martin
(in Aquadays), something not very unexpected. :-)
Next issue is due in June (!).

Popsicle's lyrics are in my opinion very simple. For example, how much
differ "Bird" from any song of Arvingarna, except the language. (Allright, I
agree that the lyrics of "A Song Called Liberty is pretty good) The only
Swedish band that should write in english and has the talent is Bear

1. I've just added new pages to the Scandinavian Indie WWW for
Reviews (CD/Demo/etc) and for Shallow (from Gothenburg) (pictures
will be added today or tomorrow at the latest).
2. I'm going to the US on my "vacation" starting _this_ week,
and because of that, there won't be any Sin's whatever posted for
almost two weeks, and the WWW pages will not be updated during
this time either.
3. And all "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" messages as well as requests
and digests won't be processed until I'm back.

The core is that Broder Daniel have something to say; to be young and
frustrated, unsecure and doubtful about the future, what to be and so on.
Just like Holden Caulfield in "Catcher in the rye", Dustin Hoffman in "The

I defenetly agree! TBQ are responsible for many very good lyrics - it's a
shame that there is a tendency to mumble (at least on the pre 'everybody
else' albums, listen to for example 'gone, gone' or 'elvis beach' - almost
impossible to make anything out of it!) and that some of the pronounciation
is very poor. (Job - Yob, Church - Shursh etc.)
I guess 'Twin Reciever' is one of the all time favourites. Nothing beats
that winter-melancholy-you-can-almost-hear-the-snow-falling-outside feeling.
And the first few lines of the lyrics ('our last converstaion died quietly
on the line | somewhere in between "I miss you" and "good bye"') - nothing
captivates that beeing away-feeling better. [sniff sob 'scuse me gotta blow
me nose ;-) ]
BTW - anyone know if Whipped Cream still exist? I wish they could turn out
another heroin-paced album, like their two first ones... I know J. Cremonese
is still alive, anyway, saw him playing in diLeva's band this summer. Best
swedish guitar-player ever? Any challengers? (Is this a discussion topic?)
Oh, well. [Reluctantly:] Back to studying.

Nah, i skip.
They played support to something at Studion about a year ago (was it
Yvonne?!), but i didn't like it that much.
Back then the singer sounded sooo much like Brett/Suede, it was a total
rip-off. But they say that Naked are musical chameleons, so they made have
changed to the better.
And they _were_ demo of the month in Pop, remember.

Hello all,
just wanted to repor that Mark Radclieffe just played Ray Wonder on his
radio-show last night. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the tune, but
it sounded slightly wacky (but good, though).
After playing the song Mark thuroughly informed us (the listeners) about on
which label ["north of no south - well that was bloody obvius wasn't it!"]
the band was and from which city. There was some general confusion about the
pronounciation of Ume} ["Oh-mee-ah, Uuuh-may-oh, hey, Lard, what is this
thing abouve the 'a'? Two dots are 'umlaut', but one... Crazy!"] Mark also
read aloud from [my guess] a press release "the northern Swedish scene is
quite vivid, and the members of Ray Wonder also play in other bands. Bands
connected to R.W are for example Puffin, Urban Turban [...] Sounds like they
have alot of fun up there!"
Thought you might wanna know....

hold anything like switching styles or copying against a new band.
when naked started out they were sort of directionless, depending greatly
on what people thought was cool or not. typical popkids, nowadays they're
more into doing something for themselves and i think you can draw more
paralells to bands like sammy och sebadoh than to suede/blur what have you
not.
give them a break they deserve at least that.

Hi all
Does anybody know anything about a Scandinavian band called The Global
Infantilists?
I've got an album of theirs (called just "The Global Infantilists") released in
the UK on Abstract Records (now sadly dead) in 1983. The music is excellent
emotional pop in a Kate Bush sort of vein. They do a version of The Doors'
"Crystal Ship" which knocks spots of the original. The people in the band were
Mats Wigerdal, Sven Ohlman, Mare Kandre and Olle Schedin.
Ever since I bought this record (for 99 pence brand new!) I've wondered if they
ever made any other music.
If you can help, thanks!

Note about the SALT US releases: the Bluster single in Europe is an

SALT EP has the track Occasions from the european SALT single Bluster
as well as some tracks which are on both. I know this sounds a bit

I'm pretty sure they only released one album. It got critically acclaimed
here in Sweden, but then the band just sort of vanished.
Mare Kandre has since gone into writing books... novels, poems... such stuff.
Haven't read her myself though.
Mats Wigerdal used to be in a band called Ubangi, that was most wellknown for
two other members: Cia Berg, now in Whale, and Thomas "Orup" Eriksson who is
doing slick pop that little girls appreciate.
Then I think Mats was in another band called Oven&Stove, that did wacky pop in
the Devo vein.
This is all I know.

Yeah, the great Oven & Stove, predecessors of Bob Hund. I saw them once at

Note that Tomas and Magnus Boman (also Oven & Stove) formed the band

When I finally am able to watch ZTV, there is no Eric around to tell

I'm not complaining, just kinda curious why everybody is so silent.
Nothing going on these days?
I saw Pineforest Crunch last night here in Lund. The sound wasn't
perfect, but I must say that these guys have a lot of good songs!
It seems as whenever anybody writes a review on this list they tell
what celebrities were there. The only ones I spotted last night was
Jens Jansson and Christoffer Lundqvist of Brainpool, but then again,
I'm not very good at recognising people. What I did see was a guy

Just before I left for La Palma (don't be jealous - we had fog all day
