...which makes me think of the _brilliant_ gig w/ Teenage Fanclub at Gino
back in june 95. The last song was Beatles' "Rain", and it ended in a jam
where all instruments were taken over by the audience! And it actually
sounded really good. TFC brought out all guitars, tambourines, maraccases
etc, etc they could find and handed it over to guys who jumped up on stage.
Marvellous!
Finaly the guys realized that TFC had gone offstage, and they stood there
and didn't know how it all should end.
The jam countinued fow some more minutes, then TFC came back and ended.
It was like a great aura of happiness around the whole thing, one of the
best gigs i've ever been to.

* "Boring In a Proper Way" but a cover of New Order's "5-8-6".
Man, you're right! Sorry about the disinfo - I mixed up two of those

Yeah, as promised a small review of the show: Petrol, fronted by two
gorgeous girls, with three studio musicians, rocked in Vasteras yesterday.
Jenny and Camilla, on song and acoustic guitar, with their looks they could
well be the Ace Of Base of indie (in a positive way, don't laugh!).
They have light voices, somewhere between Lush and Cardigans, but the
guitars were much harder, distorsion and stuff. I also liked the choruses,
which are like chewinggum in your head. Produced in the right way, they can
become the next big thing.
Deal with Telegram/Warner, first single out in May.
Remember where you read it first. ;)

This reminds me of a show that happened at more than 3 years ago, on the 2nd
of October. Heffaklump (pre-Randy), Superdong (Pre-Fireside,Breach) and
the Bear Quartet played in "Badhusets festivitets sal". The stage was about
30 cm, and the roof was perhaps 30 cm above the heads of those who stood on
the stage. Matti Alkberg was wearing a baker's hat and was looking generally
weird. Uhmm yeah since it was my 18th birthday, and had been consuming larger
amounts of whiskey, I ruined a song for Superdong by shouting in the mic..
but they weren't too mad at me tho. Oh yeah there were some other band
playing too, but I can't remember their name and there's no "offspring"
from that one existing today.

Subject: Slush Puppies
I just have to write something about _Slush Puppies_, who played here at
Herrgar'n two days ago (an interview is coming up). I had never heard them
before, but I read that they did sound somewhat like Dinosaur Jr. And
they did. :-) _Really_. The vocals are just as whining and scraping as one
would expect from J. Mascis himself, and the music.. well, it's sounds
a bit similar to Dino, but there are more guitars during choruses. Not
as sprawling as Dino. They're definitely good though. If you like Dino,
Slush Puppies are not to be missed.
They have released one EP called "Cosmic Trip" on the Just 4 Fun label,
which I think is good even though the band says the only track on it
they can stand these days is the first one (it was released April 95)
but recorded in 1994, so they feel it's not representative for their
sound nowadays.
The live performance didn't leave me asking for anything more. That is
to say, they kicked.

Funny that. It seems like Frank Black is really digging his own
grave, or rather, the record company is. Read in Expressen Fredag
about the company's promotion stunt for Mr. Black, which made them
(the Fredag crew) cancel their interview:
Three guys dressed in black wearing sunglasses entered their editorial
room, slams a tape recorder on the floor, they press play, and start to
dance. Right there in front of their desks. The music is Frank Black's
latest single.
I'm not sure, but I would have thought it was funny, though they do
have a point when saying that they'd like to decide if the music
is good or not themselves, without this kind of promotion stunts.

I agree with you somewhat. That is, on that there are a lot of swedish
bands with music references to the Pixies. Blake Carringtons, who played

Got some email from Minna from the Finnish band _Super_ the other day,
of which we have heard a lot about on this list from Kimmo and Sami
(if I'm not mistaken) earlier.
She told me they were interested in a tour of Sweden, probably together
with _Pansies_, but need to get in touch with people that can help them
to book some dates. I suggested she could write the mailing list
directly, as I feel there are enough people on the list with contacts
all over the country, these days. Or am I wrong?
So hopefully we all can help the band, and at the same time get to see
them live in the near future? I've passed on addresses and information
for the Linkoping venues (Skylten & Herrgar'n) as well as to Studion in
Stockholm and information on festivals like Hultsfred and Trastocks-
festivalen (it is Jocke at West Side one should contact for the latter
right?).
She also said they were interested in getting signed to a Swedish label,
which of course would be really interesting. :-) I recommended West Side
but I don't know if Jocke still has a "stop" signing new bands? Any
other labels that might be interested?
Well, we'll see if she posts to the list. If not, I'll forward the info
I get.

* Subject: new concept for music marketing
The following presents you with our new concept for
increasing public exposure
and
increasing your song title sales at an immediate profit.
Five of the largest music producers in Europe are convinced this is a good
and solid new alternative way to go. They are already supplying us each month
with a number of new original songs from which we can choose.
But we are in need of a larger selection of song material from all over the
world, so are asking you to:
1. study our concept
2. send us an e-mail to tell us you are interested so we can answer your
questions and
3. we will give you the address you should send your demos or CDs to.
4. Then we will work together toward signing a contract for releasing
your song or songs as follows:
Present Market Situation
Presently, the multinational music producers and publishers dominate the
international market. They have good connections with the national copyright
companies (royalty collecting companies). Those companies control the
principal rights of the authors, composers and publishers: duplication,
distribution, broadcasting and performance rights. The producers normally
settle accounts with the authors and composers based on the number of items
sold (CDs, etc.). This is a very fair accounting system.
Royalty collecting Companies like GEMA(Germany), BUMA (Netherlands), PRS (UK),
ASCAP (U.S.A.) etc. usually reckon their accounts on the basis of statistical
averages. (Number of TV, radio and/or public performances/year). This favours
the big companies and often leaves the smaller ones (composers, authors, etc.)
without any royalties income to speak of. It is also very difficult to control
the accounts done by the world's different copyright companies, because each
of these companies uses different rates for the performances.
In Austria, for instance, every band is required to submit a list of all
titles played at each concert or live public performance, and A.K.M.
(Austrian royalty collecting company) distributes the pertinent royalties
based on these lists. In addition, the public broadcasting monopoly provides
A.K.M. with an exact list and frequency of every second of playing time for
every song performed. All together, this provides the authors and composers
and music publishers with good, clear control, but on account of the complex
bureaucracy required to make it function, the system is very expensive. Other
countries base the distribution on broad, general averages, which reduces
auditing expences, but makes it nearly impossible to check.
Authors send in demo-tapes to the big producers every day, but only about
2% get a record contract this way. Only 20% of all composed titles are ever
recorded and distributed. The remaining 80%, however, include a considerable
volume of good titles as well, that get tossed because of momentary marketing
politics (they aren't ,in", don't match up with the overall business line at
the moment, are too similar to an already existing contract singer, and so
forth).
Our Company Concept
Give the momentary outsiders better chances to get records out now by offering
them the opportunity to participate in a different mode of distribution.
Obtain from them titles, songs of every possible musical taste that can be
played in hotels, restaurants, shops or the like as ,background music". Our
company will enter into contracts with the owners or managers of hotels,
restaurants, cafes, shops, barbers, boutiques, banks, insurance companies,
etc.(,subscribers") to deliver CDs to them. The prices these subscribers pay
for our standard music services covers 2 CDs (12 titles/CD) a month, including
all costs of the label's composer, author and music-publisher performance
rights. So our subscribers no longer pay copyright-use fees to national
companies such as GEMA, BUMA, ASCAP, PRS etc., if they play our CDs only.
>From all the ,demo-records" we receive from our (potential) contract authors,
composers, etc. every month, our company chooses 24 titles (songs) to appear
on the two CDs to be produced for that month. Due to copyright laws, the songs
released on our CDs must be original. Each author or composer or artist is
required to sign a license that gives the irrevocable rights and license
directly to our subscribers, entitling them to play the songs publicly in
their restaurant, hotel, shop or such. Our company retains the irrevocable
rights of duplication, distribution and airplay and handles the accounting
for the royalties on sales.
Presently, European companies are paying an average amount of stlg 0.19
(Pound Sterling) per CD for the duplication and distribution rights. We
propose splitting stlg 1 for every CD sold, (five times as much as normal),
on the condition that our authors, composers and music-publishers forfeit
rights for the songs released on our CDs to additional royalties normally
accruing from broadcasts and performances, whereby video and film rights,
etc., could be kept a matter for separate royalties negotiations.
The simplicity of this concept allows all parties involved to keep close
tabs on the system, and ensures that every one gets his fair share.
The Austrian Chamber of Commerce and the Austrian Hotel Owners Association
are already indicating massive support of this concept. We expect to win
10,000 - 15,000 subscribers within the first year.
Initially, our company will provide sample CDs to all German-speaking
broadcasting companies. Although the inclusion of numbers in their programs
would not result in royalties for radio or TV performance time, the increased
exposure will boost sales and thus increase royalties income on CDs sold.
The total amount accrued per CD, to be split among the authors, composers and
publishers, will be predictably higher than it is using the present system.
For example: 10,000 CDs sold = 10,000 Pound royalty income
50,000 CDs sold = 50,000 Pound royalty income
Basically, it is foreseen to settle accounts with every author, composer and
music publisher annually. However, the pertinent sales royalties for a song
released on our CD for the month of May, for instance, are to be paid to the
author(s), composers and music publishers by the end of June of that year.
Royalties from any additional CD sales accruing from airplays, etc., are to
be settled in the annual account.
Distribution Schedule
70 salesmen are to be engaged handle the customer subscription contracts.
Target date for start of sales is March 15, 1996. Initial delivery is
foreseen for the first week in May, 1996. The initial goal is to increase
the number of subscription contracts by 1000 every month (indicating that
sales do not start at 10,000 CDs but increase more or less linearly from,
say 2,000 to 3,000 to 4,000 and upward every month).
We guarantee every author who joins our ranks from the beginning (that is,
prior to reaching a CD-production level of 20,000 pcs/month) that at least
one more of his/her songs will appear on the next CD upon reaching the
distribution level of 20,000 CDs a month.
Within the first year, we hope to be in a position to offer our subscribers
the possibility of ordering CDs from all over the world by catalogue
according to their own needs and tastes.

Hello all,
First, I really would like to get a hold of this compilation. Does anyone
know where I can find it ?
Second, I would like to add my own little opinion to the Cardigans
thread.
Well, I think that their first album is better. Even if 'Life' is more of
a whole, Emmerdale has definitely more hits in it and is less 'joking'. I
have also heard the new version of Rise & Shine (single to be released
soon in Europe) and I prefer the old one, but that's typical...

My friends and I went to see Wannadies during the Stockholm Water Festival
last summer. A couple of my friends had seen Atomic Swing the day before
and were talking pretty loudly about how lame AS were. Two girls who stood
right in front of us gave us strange looks at this moment. We didn't think
much about it, until later when we noticed that the guy who was in company
with these girls was actually Niklas Frisk (who obviously must have heard
everything). Curtains down!

Well, I can post the inlay card somewhere, or make it available on
WWW, but I don't know if anybody will want to continue with that kind
of design, as it will be a sort of a messy low-fi job anyway (that's
what you get 'designing' yer stuff on Macrosoft Word...wotta powerful
tool! :)
Besides, I think the first chain tape is already past that stage (the
Swedish Industrial one), so maybe we can't get a uniform design
concept going on.
Well, we'll see what happens. BTW, you can still sign up to the tape
chain!!

What? Do you mean that they have re-recorded the song?? Seems a bit
strange to me, as there was nothing wrong with the original version,
quite the contrary!

Well, I wouldn't say RSB are wimpy in that way, instead (IMO of
course) they are wimply in a 'anti-rock, anti-aggressive' way. Sort of
beautiful, gentle, sensitive kind of thingy, you know... I'm sure
somebody out there can give a better description than my restricted
vocabulary allows...
Give it a listen in the shop at least!

Well, for what it is worth, I've got a live tape of FB playing Pixies
songs live, and it's quite incredible. But I understand that playing
his new songs (acoustic or electric) will result in nothing but a
truckload of boring crap (apologies to Mr. Black's fans).

Well, this version is actually on the 'European' version of Life. (the
one that is a compilation of Emmerdale and the original Life). I guess
they have changed it a little bit. the orchestration is different. If
you want, I can put some of it on their home page(ask me...).
I have also the video (some of you have seen it). It is recorded in
Japan. I could not manage putting it on the web though (helping hand?).
I prefer the first version though...

Yes, this tape is on the way now. If I may say so myself the design of that
inlay card is really neat. I scanned a picture from a cemetary, which I then
imported into an Island Draw document (postscript).
It perfecly reflects the mood of the music on the tape, and it looks great.

Yeah, that's what i meant. Isn't that 2nd single called Drifter? the white
one, with them sitting in chairs on the front?

Hey, I said _don't laugh_! ;) Yeah, because of their looks, man. You'd know
what i mean if you saw them.

Hmm. Nothing booked for the moment, but i think Warner has a spring
showcase every year for their new acts, for "in" people and VIPs. I'd say
they would show up there?!
I was at this wansh at Gino last year, and, OK i didn't go there for the
music, but i sure as hell got drunk on all the free beer that was flooding
the place.

Found this very slick page w/ loads of tourdates, also links to many
booking agents in germany, labels etc etc.
The tourdates could be of interest, some also list Swedish/Danish/ other
European dates. Right now, i just saw Cardigans will come to Germany in
February.
So here's the URL:

Chief, take a look and maybe you can add a link from Scan-Indie?!

It said the record company had hired the guys to promote Black's single.
Would have been even funnier if it had been company officials - I guess
that would have created a better atmosphere really. Oh well.

Ha ha, well, let this be a lesson to you. :-) Jokes aside, I do think it's
a great way of learning about gigs, hearing it on the mailing list, I mean.
Most of the time, the gig lists in papers, magazines etc. don't even
come close covering the gigs that I would love to go to, and most of the
time I miss them because of it. I say, lets use the jungle drum when we've
got it.

The Slowdive & Mojave 3 mailing list
After noticing that there were a lot of people looking for a Slowdive
mailing list, I've been thinking of starting one for a while, and
well, here it is, including Mojave 3, for obvious reasons. :-)
The Slowdive & Mojave 3 mailing list was made to cater for the
discussions about the (no longer active) Creation band Slowdive
and the (active) 4AD band Mojave 3 from the UK, as well as being
a distribution list for the Internet Slowdive and Mojave 3
Discographies.
