I saw all their singles at Megahertz (a record store) in Jonkoping
(not that strange...) last week. You might want to call them and ask if
they can send it to you?

I'll be wissiting Stockholm next week (27.11 - 1.12) and I was wondering
are there any interesting gigs I should attend to while visiting your
lovely town. Anything goes, as long as it's interesting.

I am also interested in the club life of Stockholm, so if you know

Yes!

I caught the Inbreds. The really charmed me. Came to think of a lo-fi
version of early They Might Be Giants (at least the first songs).

Please tell me about your zine, I'm always interrested.

BTW, not many people were there when the Inbreds played (20 past seven).
Could we have been as many as 50?

I did. Love them, as always. I can't help it but, i get so happy when i
hear them. The melodies, the atmosphere, the way they talk to the audience,
makes me lucky, somehow.

And then they did one of the best songs this year: "Mellow Doubt", which
also has brilliant lyrics that means something to me. That's personal, but
anyway...

Still, i agree with Langstrom that Bandwagonesque was the best album
they've made, compared to the later ones.

Yeah! Definitely Radiohead the 1/12 at Gino. Support Drugstore i think.
Radiohead are ace, and they slammed Gino the last time they played there!

There's also a party for the arty magazine 90-Tal, with lot's of jet set
people in downtown Stockholm 28/11. A few live acts will be there,
including seminal act Dom Dummaste ("The Most Stupids"). Maybe someone else
on the list knows more about this fiesta?!

Hi everybody,

Well, I checked out the Lipton commercial. All I can say is that it is
not the Cardigans. It is said to be someone who copied their sound,
though, because it is very similar...

If anybody knows who it is, I will be very interested to know.

Indeed! It's on a quite heavy rotation in Finnish TV as well (it has
to be, since I have seen it already a couple of times, and I watch

Hello,

I just told what I heard... By the way I never heard of this label, do
you have some informatioon. I know that the Cardigans areheavily inspired
by 60s british pop, but I don't have any examples...

Thanks in advance...

Well, which Sarah band were you thinking of, coz I can't think
straight away of one that would sound as irritatingly
kitschy-jazzy-retro as the Cardigans do.

Well...what can I say... Sarah are (or should I say were?) a seminal
UK indiepop label, I mean THE seminal label of the past decade or so!
Bands in their roster were Field Mice, Heavenly, Blueboy, Northern
Picture Library, The Orchids among many others.

Their music could be described as twee, sensitive, emotional, fluffy
with exactly the right amount of naivety and honesty... I'm sure
somebody else on this list can give a better description than this.

If you want to find out more about the lable, get the "Sarah 100:
There And Back Again Lane"
compilation CD. It sums up the label and
its bands quite well.

I saw her twice back in 1992, at festivals in England, and i must say she

Hello everybody!

The following message was posted to the indiepop mailing list, I
thought I'd pass it on:

According to Peter Hahndorf:

Just in time for your X-mas shopping are two new CDs by German label
Marsh Marigold Records. First the long overdue debut-full length by
Swedish popsters RED SLEEPING BEAUTY. Actually it's only 19:45 min
long but it has eight songs. It's called 'Bedroom', but has nothing to
do with bedroom pop. BTW have you ever encountered a Swedish band
making bedroom pop?
Personally I think the songs here are the best they released since
their 'Pop Sounds' 3" CD back in 1992. I'm looking forward to their
appearance at the annual Marsh Marigold X-mas festival in two weeks.

In case somebody is interested, the other new Marsh Marigold release
is a CD by the French band Caramel.

Stockholm was great, almost as good as the one in april. I'm actually

Hmm, I guess it'll be pretty soon. They're damn quick these days, though
it's not going to be this week, because this week's schedule is as follows:

Mon 4/12 Wild Rover (Linkoping 28-Oct-95)
Tue 5/12 Cheb Mami (Galarparken, Stockholm, 15-Jun-95)
Wed 6/12 Dr Alban (Gatufesten, Sundsvall, 7-Jul-95)
Thu 7/12 Foo Fighters (Cirkus, Stockholm, 17-Oct-95)
Fri 8/12 Cardigans (Live)
Sat 9/12 Fancy Pool, Retard, Oliver Hardy (Ungdomsgarden, Tellus, Skara)
Sun 10/12 Boogaloo (Fredmans, Malmo, 23-Nov-95)

Time: ALWAYS at 21.03 (*** EXCEPT *** Fridays (ie. Cardigans) = 21.10)

Anyone catch Oasis, Menswear, Beastie Boys, Supergrass, Levellers and
Tricky (from Roskilde and Hultsfred) on P3 Live last week? Anyone recorded
any of it? I missed the whole thing 'cause I had to visit my parents. :-/

It probably will. Ther was a truck outside Suede's first concert at Cirkus
and they broadcasted that, but several months later.

Funny, I'm listening to it right now. It's pretty ok. Much more mellow than
the previous ones, though. Some really good songs, some not so good.
The first song sounds almost exactly like the first song on Boo Radley's
first full length, Spaniard.

While I'm at it, I might as well add some scan-indie content...

Two of the records I listen to the most right now are Honey Is Cool's
"
Focky Focky No Pay" and Yvonne's eponymously titled debut.
Really good, both of them, even though I like the songs on HIC's demo much
more than the new songs.

No, what about the Undulate CD??? Is it a UK-only release?

I also met Andreas + Olle Ljungstrom yesterday at Medborgarplatsen. They

Salt is on heavy rotation on the major "
rock" radio stations in the
LA-area. They also keep mentioning that they are from Sweden.

I wonder if people are buying the record though...

Do you mean the Whitsun EP?
Or is there a separate single for Undulate as well?

Hmm, some day I'll make an attempt to update that discography I made a
couple of years ago.

I certainly hope they are... looking back at this year's releases, I
think "
Auscultate" is absolutely one of the best things I have heard,
not only Scan-Indie -wise, but on a global scale (huge thanks to
Robert C for picking up the CD for me!! :) ) Too bad we missed them at

huh? no. um, it's a totally new one. and it was supposed to have been
released this past friday (dec.1st) and supposed to be called "
forever.."
something. a good friend of mine got it in the mail last week and he
says it's pretty ok. so now i want to hear it myself. and yeah, of course
my friend is a journalist. who else but them would get records for free
before they are even being released..? i can't believe how much they
(journalists) are being sucked up to. they never buy new records and they
usually don't know sh*t about the artists (expect for what is being
mouth-fed to them in the press-releases) they are reviewing.

they suck so bad it's unbelievable.

go shellac and palace brothers who don't support this "
sucking-up by
sending out promos to journalist"-system!!!

That depends on what journalists you're talking about...

The question is a bit quirky, but i'd say yes, maybe.
The first time i read about them was in Nojesguiden when they became demo
of the month (Jan Gradvall?). Later, i also read in Expressens archive, the
first time they were mentioned. That was Lars Lindstrom, seing them live in
Pitea (or Skelleftea). He wrote something like: "
these guys are going to
get big, i promise. Remember where you read it first.".

Personally, i first heard about them in august -91(?), when they were
palying in Pet Sounds basement at Tulegatan, in their old shop. That was
just when Template was released. Later that year i saw them in Uppsala on
the "
Trimotore" tour, with Mindscape and This Perfect Day(?).

Yes, there is one separate. I've seen it listed a few times. I believe it's
not released here, just like Histrionics and Little Princess.

Hey, i'm a journalist, although not employed at the moment. I used to work
at Expressen. Don't throw shit at journos, in fact you should blame the
record companies who send this stuff to them. But then, these are private
companies, they can do what they want with their promos. And as long as
they see that this works and their artists get press, there's no way to
stop them. I could argue a lot more on this, but i leave it now...

Cool! Maybe this is a good sign they will tour the States, and release
their video to MTV USA. The first time I heard "
Honour Me", I thought how
perfectly it would fit into the WHFS (Baltimore local "

station) playlist....

That's great! I've been trying to get some news out of their record
label for a while about touring outside Sweden, but I haven't received
an answer yet. I'll talk to them in person on monday though, so maybe
I can get some answers then.

Christian wanted to know what journalists one is talking about, so
I'll go ahead and slag one. Anders Nunstedt. He's written so much
shit, and I don't mean his own opinions, because of course, he's
entitled to have those, like the rest of us, but his facts and his
journalism looks like he just made up his journalist degree. Examples?
Sure. The parade example is - tadaa: The Charlatans.

1) His review of The Charlatans "
The Charlatans".
He says that there are no hammond on the album, which he thinks
is great. Even the headline for the review stated that fact.

* Fact: The hammond is present on ALL tracks on the album.

2) His interview / festival report from the Stockholm Water Festival
about The Charlatans stated that they played just when China
blew off their fireworks, which made the concert a bit strange.

* Fact: Funny that. I was there. I guess he wasn't, because they
let The Charlatans gig wait for China's fireworks to end, making
it 1/2 an hour late.

3) Note in expressen friday - "
Tim Burgess, singer in Charlatans
is a man of good taste. Therefor it was a bit chocking to open
the latest issue of the trend magazine I-D, which has a big
story about the english pop group. The article is namely
illustrated with cool pictures of Tim - wearing a Djurgarden
sweater."

* Fact: Explanation for those outside Sweden: Djurgarden is a hockey/
soccer/etc team from Stockholm. If Anders Nunstedt had been at their
gig at the Stockholm Water festival, he would have noted, like I did,
that a bunch of guys (standing next to me) in front of the stage
threw that Djurgarden sweater to Tim, which he then wore through
the rest of the gig. Now THAT would have been something to write
about, but to write that he's surprised instead, just shows a lot
about his journalistic ability, and even makes the no.2 above even
more clear about him not being there at all.

I did write to expressen and asked about these things, but, as you well
know, no answers and nothing on the "
readers" page. WHO DARE TO QUESTION
A. NUNSTEDT?! Yeah, he's a god. Right. Thank you for your objectiveness.

And I won't even mention his appearence in the, frequent shown on MTV,
"
Sweden" commercial.

Yeah! And they play here the day after! 11/12 at Skylten, Linkoping
(Salt + Fireside), not for free though, but 50:- is affordable I think.
I nicked one of them SALT + FIRESIDE tour posters they've put up all

Yeah, they announced it on Z TV last night as well. All Scandinavian
dates are cancelled. Only Z TV had a scoop, saying that she wasn't ill

yes, but when they try to become the most important part of the show (in
this case: the music business) it just gets really, really ugly. music
would be around no matter if the journalists were. and. people would, most
likely, go to shows and buy records even if there were no musically
oriented journalists around. so. is there *really* a need for them?

but, i guess they do exist to serve some kind of purpose. and that is
part of what is so disguisting about this. sure, i love to read
well-written articles/interviews on bands/artists that i, personally,
find interesting/enjoyable. but when they (the evil journalists) along with
the major record companies are trying to actually friggin' *teach* us as
readers what music and bands who are cool to like it is really getting to
be fucked up! i understand that it is mighty hard for a person writing
about music *not* to write about it in a non-objective point of view, but
what we are seeing here in sweden, it's just sick! people like anders
nunstedt just believes that his opinions on music is, like, the word of
god. i just can't fucking believe it! who is who to say one record is
better than another?!? i mean, just because you have heard 99% of all the
records ever made, you may not be one bit right when it comes to what *i*
personally like!! if music in one way can be better than in another, is it
possible to point out the best colour in the world too?!?!? by taking
this as an example, i am refering to the music magazine pop's list on
the hundred best records ever. this list was put together by the people
who are making pop (the magazine). and to me, it's one of the most
offensive journalistic pieces on music i've ever read! who are these
people to say what records are the best ever?!? sorry, i don't get it.
sure, they all know a lot about the history of music etc etc but why in
the world do people believe this list is "
the list of the best records
ever"? it's just twenty different persons putting together a list of
what records they like the most. and they are all rather good friends
so, well, obviously they have pretty much the same opinions (as friends
tend to have).

and then, every music interested kid around goes "
wow. are these really
the best albums ever made? yeah, they must be because that is what those
guys say and if they don't know, who does?".. the thing is that no one
does. everyone should really try to listen to the music and then make up
their own minds, no matter what anders nunstedt and/or jan gradvall
believe. try to overlook their attempts to educate you and your taste in
music. their words are based on nothing else but their very own opinions.

so. they are not backed up by god or whomever.

enough ranting. music is the works. so let's just forget about them
getting payed for writing about it and just get along instead, shall we?

.per

ps. i am a little sorry for naming jan gradvall in the same sentence as
anders nunstedt. i respect jan gradvall an his opinions a lot
more than mr.nunstedt who just seems to know absolutely nothing
about anything. and still he keeps trying to impose his opinions
on us. yuk. that man really does suck.

Through the internet and lists like this, surely. Going to see bands
play, just to find out how they sound. Talking to your
friends. Reading fanzines (written by fans rather than journalists -
people who actually have to pay
for the music they review). I'd say the Finnish music press has not
introduced me to one single interesting band for quite a
while... Can't speak for Swedish journos, of course.

OK, OK, relax. We all _know_ there are no objective standards, no
absolutes and everything is equally good and valuable. There is no
intrinsic difference between Sonic Dream Collective and the Bear
Quartet and Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Unsurprisingly, people all have
different tastes. Some people have similar tastes to other people.
Also, some people can _write_ about their tastes better than other
people.

I happen to like Nordic indie music. I cannot possibly go out and buy
all of it, and then decide what I like. I haven't got the time to
queue up in Aahlens and listen to it all either. Nor do I have so
many friends who like the same stuff as I do. And they don't play a
whole lot of it on the radio. So I read what the journalists have to
say. I read what the people on this group have to say. Then I have
less of an overload problem when I go with my 160kr to the nearest
record shop. And I can listen and see whether I do like what I hear.

So I can read through POP's Top 100 albums and look for things that
might appeal to me. And when I see Sly and the Family Stone at number
one I think, well, maybe I can check that one out sometime.

The problems arise when somebody writes '[band I like] are crap!'.
That's just bad journalism. Much more often, it's '[band I like] are
past their best, are uninventive, uninspiring, and are basically just
copying [some other band]'. Then, it can be much more difficult to
listen to the record and say, well, actually I _do_ still like it.
But this is _my_ problem. My taste is still the same, but actually it
is influenced quite a bit by what I read. It would be nice to have a
taste highly independent of the rest of the world. But then, just
think, you might discover you actually liked 2 Unlimited better than
Sonic Youth! What a thought...

I heard 'Now Forever' (is that right? Hope so!) on P3 last night for
the first time. It's a nice song, in the Popsicle tradition ('Wake
up' rather than 'Hey Princess', of course). So the Popsicle fans (hi
Kimmo!) will probably like it. However, Andreas's voice is _really_
weak on it. I don't suppose he'd claim to be the world's greatest
singer, but he's quite simply missing a lot of the notes, and it
sounds really unprofessional. He didn't seem to have those problems
on 'Abstinence' and 'Lacquer'. I dunno, some people who can sing well
produce hopeless records (Elton John, say) and the reverse is true of
some others (Matti from TBQ, Jukka from Aknestik). (Why did the
Pastels never make it big? for example...)
