He hee, now that's an understatement if I ever saw one. Red Sleeping
Beauty are the wimpiest band out of Sweden bar none. Their wimpiness
makes my mind reel with delight.

Siesta is a superb label - if you like "twee" or wimpy pop at all.
They've just put out a new ep by RSB, which I hope to have by the end of
the month. I'm not sure whether it's a 7" or a cd ep. I've got a 5 track
3" cd by them on Marsh Marigold (Germany) which is ok, not great. I've
got another three 7" eps by them which I haven't had very long, or heard
very many times. (My turntable is very user-unfriendly). So far none of
these have managed to make much of an impression on me. The two tracks by
them that have made an impression are two of their most recent releases.
One is the track "Stay" on a split 7" on Grimsey with Benito (Jim &
Stephanie Ruiz). The other is "Her Favourite Clichee" on the "Europop"
7" on Siesta (with 3 other bands). Both of these are excellent (all of
the tracks on them are excellent).
The line from "her fav. clichee" that sticks in my mind is:
She's got toothpaste on her cheek,
It's a thing that makes me weak
OK, so this is feather-weight stuff. I'm not sure if they just liked the
way this line sounded, or if it is supposed to have something to do with
the belief (held by some) that toothpaste is supposed to be good for
drying out pimples. Either you love it or this makes you want to puke.

So I went there last night, and mingled with the "pop mob"... of course
the omnipresent Lars Nylin was there. It was kind of a combined gig and
release party, but unfortunately the free beer was finished when I arrived.
Melony played for about half an hour, and I can safely say it was the best
Swedish newcomers I've seen in some time. Even better than Mouth and
Loosegoats. One point of reference that you can't get by when talking about
Melony is Pixies... it's definitely not a case of sheer plagiarism, Melony's
material stand out for itself, but it was like Black Francis' spirit was
lingering in the room. The songs followed a common pattern: pretty calm, or
"loose", verses followed by an explosion of dissonant riffs in the chorus.
What struck me as particularily brilliant was the melodies - Peter Kvint is
a first class pop smith - and the drummer doing backing vocals added a lot.
They follow in a proud tradition of power pop trios, from Jam and onwards.
I will go out and get the "Skycracker" EP as soon as I get a chance,
that's fer sure.

Ha ha ha! Tjena Nunan, och valkommen till klubben!
Mr Nunstedt is actually an old friend of mine, since i worked at Expressen
for some time, a year ago.
My experience is that you always have to be careful what you say on lists.
For a few weeks ago I met the record label boss from Energy Rekords (SPOCK,
Cat Rapes Dog, Page etc), Mr Hakan Ehrnst, and he told me he's actually on
this list too.
Oops! Had i written something nasty about him or his no-longer-any-good
bands on the label??? Nah, don't think so. But anyway, either watch your
tongue or be prepared to fight for your opinions.

Hmm. I got #2, and it's distributed by Energy Rekords, AFAIK. Get it, it's
worth having just for the tracks by Honey Is Cool and Yvonne.
There's supposed to be stuff from Yvonne on #1 as well, but I wouldn't
shell out full price just for one track.

Subject: Selected News [11-Jan-96]
Salt - Nina Beckmann at MVG lets us know that Salt are really on the move in
the US right now. It boils! The single "Bluster" that has been
released, is "playlisted" at large rock stations in several states,
among them, K-Rock in Los Angeles and New York. The album,
"Auscultate" will be released by Island on March 4th or 5th, 1996.
As it looks right now, the band will tour the big country in February
and the beginning of March, 1996.

Hello there!
Yeah, my tape chain project was in the pipeline, but it turned out to
be a rather long pipe...ok, I hear you, get to the point. Which is:
I have now completed the Finnish Indie tape for our chain! And you can
sign up to it!! And you can do it now!!! Take a look at the track
listing below, complete with my lame comments/descriptions and see if
there's anything worth wasting your time. Then send me (trkisa@uta.fi)
an e-mail message with

- your e-mail address
- your street address
The bands on the tape are perhaps a bit more on the poppier side of
indie, but there are a couple of noisier acts there too. I thought I'd
leave most of the blossoming hardcore/noise scene in Finland to
somebody else, more qualified to speak to us on this topic.
I'll be accepting signups for some time, at least for a week or
so. Then I'll organize a schedule and let participants know of it.
I'll also try to 'design' an inlay card with some '''''artwork''''' on
it (heh). If time & energy allow, I'll write some basic info about
each band appearing on the tape and post it here and/or to the
participants, perhaps even make it available on the web. But we'll
see.

If you can't find any there, you can order them eg. from the Four
Letter Words mail order (that's where I get most of my indiepop
stuff). The last catalogue listed both their "Seasons Change" 7" EP on
Somersault and the split 7" w/ Benito, which was already recommended

favourite pieces of music in 1995! Even today it sounds so fresh and
energetic to me! I think it's better than either of Cardigans albums
as a matter of fact. Jennie's voice is soooo cool!

I don't know...it's quite hard to decide which I like
better. Sometimes I find the 'kitsch aspect' on "Life" a bit overblown
and almost annoying. Then again, "Emmerdale" sounds often a bit too
thin. But, oddly enough, at times these are the very reasons why I
love each of these albums... 'mind is a strange and wonderful thing'
as they say in "Invasion of Body Snatchers".

Has anyone checked out the new Vasteras band Petrol? Two babes singing, and

They just got signed by Telegram/Warner and tonight (friday) there's a big
showcase in Vasteras (Sweden) with Petrol live on stage, and lots of record
company hot shots, journos etc coming in there from Stockholm (me too ;)

why is just about every swedish "indie-pop" band so totally into the
pixies? yes, they (the pixies) were good and all, but this far too
obvious pixies influence that guitar-based pop-bands in this country are
showing is getting a bit annoying (if not simply ridiculus), i find.
hasn't this been going on for too long now and shouldn't we demand these
bands to update their record collections and stop this madness?

Just a short not of no importance.
Two of my (unnamed, but very indie-initiated) friends attended the
Nojesguiden Awards bash at Berns the other nigth.
Suddenly a fat bloke with an acoustic guitar appeared and played
some songs, just like *any* half shite acoustic guitar player.
My friends :
"He looks just like Roger Pontare!"
"Who is this guy?"
"He sounds just like Roger Pontare trying to play pop!"
another person :
"It's Frank Black"
and, so it was. over and out...
Punchline : don't play songs acoustic if they're not meant to be
played acoustic....

Nope, the track is indeed "Drifter". The one you're thinking of is
the Souls track on the Life Is a Joke compilation CD, which wasn't
"Boring In a Proper Way" but a cover of New Order's "5-8-6".

It's definitely worth it, if you want to hear Yvonne play independent
manchester-style pop, that is. I think that track, "Drifter", is great
and like Kimmo said earlier, the Cardigans track "Pooh Song" is also
a gem. And Crescent Venus, and Mrs. Ross and.. well, it's worth the
money. :-)

Heh heh. Well, that message made me think of weird things that one has
done / happened over the years when it comes to gigs and bands. Could
be fun if we'd post such stories, don't you think?
One "weird" thing was when Mary Beats Jane played in Kalmar about
two years ago. The place they played at was so small that the audience
(we) were about 30 centimeters from the band on the stage that was
about 30 centimeters higher than the floor in front of it. This made
it kinda easy to interact with the band, so I ended up dancing with
the singer while he was singing and occasionally (sp?) play on one
of the guys on guitar's strings. I can say that I wasn't sober that
night. :-)

Just for fun, I was thinking about giving away some newly made
Scandinavian Indie t-shirts (they're really good looking if I may
say so myself :-)). They're in one size (Large) only, but I hope

The contest is available to the subscribers to the Scandinavian Indie
mailing list _only_ (to make it a bit easier to win).
What you need to do: Easy. Find the "hidden" WWW page on the Scandinavian
-------------------- Indie pages and do what that page tells you to.
That means, on one of the pages, there's a link
to the hidden page. It can be a character in a word,
a line, a picture, whatever. Anything but a "normal"
link to a page or address. You need to find that
"hidden" link and click on it to access the "hidden"
page. There you will find additional information.
Easy? I don't know. If no-one finds it, I'll make it easier.
You have until February 20th, 1996, to find the page.
