I don't know if it's net-politically correct to speak about one's own
band on this (or any) list, so apologies to those who are offended by
this...
First of all, thanks to Erik for his analytical review of our little
tape (and Robert too, who did the same thing some time ago). Your
thoughts are so enlightening!

That BQ comparison is a good point - I never thought about it
myself...Robert's referring to Popsicle was a bit more predictable (as
we happened to be playing "Abstinence" in the studio while mixing the
song as 'inspiration'). So we got the cream of Swedish pop in just one
song, not bad?

Funny thing is that the song was written long before I had even
heard *about* Cardigans...

Hmmm...interesting idea...but if you had studied some linguistics
(structuralism to be more exact) you'd know that 'differences create
the meaning', hence if the song would have only that one part, I
doubt you would like it as much, as it would be, in a manner of
speaking, without a proper framework... :) :)

I don't know...somehow I'm not sure if it would be of any use. My
impression is that having a demo reviewed in some magazine does not
do very much good to the band (at least to a band like ours, at least
here in Finland). Have you ever heard of a band that would have been
offered eg. a record deal because of a demo review in some
magazine/newspaper? Here in Finland, I get the feeling that most bands
who sent out demos to be reviewed in magazines are sort of
no-hopers...of course this is only my cynical opinion :)
Naturally, fanzines are a totally different story, because they are
written by people who are excited about what they write and review
only stuff they really like, and usually they have made the effort to
get hold of that music; instead of getting tens of demos in the mail
each day by young hopeful bands.
Besides, we (well, at least I) don't consider 'Hobby-like' as a
*demo*, it's a *tape* which someone out there might even like to
release, if I'm allowed to daydream in public...

As for Emiliana Torini I don't know, but the fact that Stakka Bo and the
Cardigans are on the label (Stockholm Records) and that Stakka Bo's
younger brother made the design of Life has certainly something to do
with these concerts in Japan.
BTW Erik, don't you like Stakka Bo ? ;-)

I don't know if I'm the only one here that's getting increasingly
frustrated at Popsicle. They write really pretty good songs, their
lyrics are fine these days, and they're perfectly good
instrumentalists. But they go and ruin it all because they
_just_can't_sing_. Listen to that middle eight in 'Not Forever' -- I
find it's just too embarrassing to listen to. It's beyond excusable
Pastels-ism, I think: it's a real waste of good pop music, and it's
time they did something about it.

Well I actually like the way Cessna do this contrast-thing, so I don't
agree with Erik. The point maybe is that Cessna have quite _big_
contrasts in their songs, and I suppose you could argue that they
overdo it. My feeling is that the world is so full of bands that
can't get more than one half-baked idea into a song, so this way of
doing things is refreshing. But like I said before, letting a song go
on for longer than three minutes is something that Cessna can
certainly afford to do.

Maybe you haven't seen the demo page in Pop. It might be worth
checking if Terry Ericsson takes non-Swedish stuff, but don't worry,
plenty of successful Swedish bands have passed through his frustrated
hands. Naked spring to mind. Besides, you get your name recognised,
and all publicity is good publicity. Besides, Cessna are easily good
enough. Or do you have a deal with Sub Pop in the pipeline?

Well, how much would it cost to release a mini-CD? I bet you could
sell it.

Hey, hey, what is all this..? I'll admit the bald guy in Popsicle can
get on my nerves, more and more so as time goes on, but the other
vocalist's voice is just perfection! And sure, hardly anyone of
the Pastels could hit the right note even on a good day but I think
that's really not the point. The Pastels are my friends, and I love
them.

Subject: Popundret's 'Montmartre 15 40' reviewed
Don't scratch your ears -- the two-minute guitar-pop song is back,
courtesy of Skellefteaa's Popundret. Unfortunately, so is the
37-minute CD, but (mindful of 'The La's', 'It's a Shame about Ray' and
other miniature gems) we won't take issue with that. Listening to
Popundret's neatly-crafted debut is a half-hour-and-a-bit well spent.
Magnus Nilsson's voice dominates, which is both Popundret's
strength and their weakness. At his best, he's exhilarating to listen
to, attacking the variously acerbic and joyful lyrics with obvious
relish. At times, however, he sounds a little too much like Morrissey
for comfort, and anyone who remembers early James material might feel
awkwardly transported back to 1991. This is less of a problem on the
slower, more melancholy tracks, than it is in the upbeat ones where
things otherwise to work best. There, Popundret shine. Occasionally,
as in 'Shiver Gone', they positively shimmer: you realise sheepishly
that any record that makes you grin like this can't possibly be the
Smiths. Music, indeed, which would go just fine with that second cafe
au lait at twenty to four on a languid Parisian afternoon...

Hi,
I'm in a band called Lousy and we're a sad bunch of no-hopers. :) Umm,
just thought that I'd mention that after a nice review of our last demo
in Pop we received a couple of letters from a couple of labels asking
for a copy of the demo, EMI being one of them.

Great news! I hope Salt will return (still bummed after missing them
last year). It's interesting to hear that there were 'too much people'
there last summer... it was indeed the cosiest and friendliest (and
smallest) festival I have ever been to!
Only five and a half month's wait... :) Let's start making those plans
for the summer now!

I don't know...I've got a soft spot for, er...'not quite perfect'
vocalists... I can identify with them, or something... :)

Well...it's the good old shoegaze/dreampop arrangement ideology, or
even a mannerism or sorts, at least it was for bands like Ride at
their early stage. I remember reading an interview where they guys
talked about writing the song "Twisterella", and how they realized
that they don't necessarily need to include the usual 'loud part' in
the song.

Well, now that you mention it... yeah, we came close to a deal with
them, but at the end of the day they wouldn't agree on releasing all
our stuff on the double 10" format only, the sleeve of each copy
individually finger-painted by the label's boss. What a sad label.

Subject: newsflash on Super!
Yesterday an excited female voice announced in my telephone answering
machine that the much talked-about band Super have clinched a recording deal
with a (relatively new?) Finnish label Odor (some kind of a
sub-division of Spinefarm, who some listers might recognize).
There will be a single and probably an album of sorts coming out later
this year...don't have any details at the moment, though.
They will also be playing a gig in Helsinki tomorrow (Feb the 10th),
with Poverty Stinks (are they really still alive?); and another one in
that beautiful city later in March.

I listened to the Popsicle's gig on the radio yesterday, and i recognized
one of the new songs as a pure Teenage Fanclub rip-off. The guitar _was_
"Versimillitude" by TFC. I've got no problem with song thefts as long as
they are good, but this was sooo obvious.
I don't know the name of the Popsicle song (haven't bought the album yet),
but those who have, check it out.

I just have to write regarding the name of the fothcoming Candysuck CD.
The name of the fullength CD will be "Score !".Enough said about that. I
spoke with one of the girls in the band today and she told me that they will
release a cd-single with the name "Popcorn"(that=B4s the name
they have in mind right now).
Both the cd-single and the CD will be released by Soundfront.
Sorry chief, you can't trust "Topp 40" anymore...
The new Refused CD and the new Fireside cd-single are out on Monday (12/2),
recommended by Bella Stenberg (Aftonbladet) and Martin Carlsson (Expressen).

It's pretty flattering (?) to see that the swedish music business magazine
Topp40 changed the look of their list of "music on the television" in the
latest issue (thursday 8/2) into something that looks _exactly_ like the
Scandinavian Indie Upcoming Music on the TV list, except they also list
what record label the artist is on as well.

Cardigans - two gigs together with Stakka Bo in Japan in April was also
noted with surprise by evening paper Aftonbladet on Friday
February 9th in a small "article". Maybe they should subscribe
to the Scandinavian Indie mailing list, to get the background
"scoop" posted to the list earlier by Nicolas Moch. More
Cardigans: Peter Svensson (guitar) is going to produce the
Confusions (from Sundsvall) upcoming full-length album.
Hultsfredsfestivalen 95 - have a "releaseparty" February 13th at Hard Rock
Cafe in Stockholm, about the headliners for this
year's festival. Invited only. (Source: Magnus

Kent - releases a single on February 19th called "Kr{m (s} n{ra f}r ingen
g})" from the forthcoming album "Verkligen" which will be released
in March.
Record Reviews - noted this weekend includes swedish hardcore meisters
Refused's full-length "Songs to Fan The Flames of Discontent"
on Startrec (4 out of 5 points in both Aftonbladet and
Expressen) and the CD compilation "Quality Punk Rock" on
Bad Taste Records, with among others, Loosegoats (3 out of 5
points from both Aftonbladet and Expressen (who also noted
that Loosegoats was the best band of them all on it)).
Rockbjornen - the gala held monday February 12th, by swedish evening paper
Aftonbladet, will have a live site on the Internet during the
event at http://www.aftonbladet.se/puls/puls.html, where you
can follow what's happening with comments from the winners and
audience, pictures and chat with others. The time to log on
is set to: 19.00. (performances from among others: Naked and
Fireside).

Well, i actually was confronted by a girl (yes there are girls on our
list!!!) on my school, who was (is?) also on scan-indie. She made some
serious complaint that i was too talkative and posted a lot of non-relevant
shit!
Maybe she's right?! Maybe were irrellevant? Maybe we should clean our acts
up? It can't be that fun for the rest of the world to always hear what's
going on in Stockholm?!

Yes you're a loudmouth, Jan ;-) But I think we can live with that, since
not that many other people are talkative on the list.

So what's the problem? Many of us live in Stockholm... many of the
bands we talk about live here... it's kind of natural that the contents
of this list reflect this situation.
Saturday night I did some barhopping, and from what I remember I met/saw
people from Kent, Cinnamon, Fireside, Teddybears, Bob Hund, and Atomic
Swing (and more often than not you see the people from Popsicle, Nomads,
and This Perfect Day too). My point is that more than half of these bands
are not Stockholmers originally, but yet they are drawn to the city like
flies to s**t, which of course is understandable if they want to get their
careers going. Given this, it's not very strange that the list's content
has a high Sthlm content.
I more than welcome people talking about the scenes in Linkoping, Goteborg,
Lulea, Lund, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tampere, Tallinn, Kaliningrad, whatever.

gossip that ex-bq guitarist Johan Forsling plays with Him Kerosene
now. I look forward to their future releases.
Did anyone catch "tryck till" on Z-tv, they played "left rustle"
by Fireside, the video was pretty funny, altough Jean-Pierre Barda
didn't get their wit.

..which wasn't all too surprising. i wouldn't imagine that fireside and
aol share any views and approaches whatsoever when it comes to music.
fireside likes superchunk. jean-pierre likes vaseline.
anyhow.. the fireside video was alright, but much better was the new
teddybears which "tryck till" run a few weeks back. it was very
"sabotage"ish along with a somewhat murky jesus lizard soundtrack.
hilarious slow-motion fighting poses along with some great faces and
furniture trashing.
very cool if you ask me. overly-excessive violence rules. :)

Right! The Bear Quartet had only nice things to say about Him Kerosene
(is it "Him" and not "Hin"?). They had Nils from that band with them
on guitar when they played here last time (and David from Popundret/
The Spacious Mind on drums, and Kristian from Breach on bass) (I STILL
HAVE TO TYPE IN THAT INTERVIEW I KNOW!), which filled the interview
pretty much with info on HK instead of TBQ.. According to TBQ though,
HK is labeled as playing hardcore/ska, but is really playing rock/pop.
Anyway... Johan Forsling.. wasn't the reason he quit TBQ that he
was going to concentrate on his studies? Matti said that he (Johan)
didn't quite succeed with that all the way back in october last year,
and I guess that's what we can se now. :-) But, "hrrn hrrn" was
Johan's song, and one of my all-time-favourites, so with him in HK,
I agree with you and will definitely keep an eye on them from now on!
By the way, do you know who are members of HK now? In october, they
were in "a changing state", and the setting looked like below:

I totally hated that video myself.. I mean, Fireside, a "white video"
or what? That's not Fireside to me at least. A Fireside video (to me)
should include at least the band playing some instruments, a couple of
stagedives, and thunderous guitars. But I guess I'm stuck in my old
views on hardcore.

This I agree with! I actually thought that because it was (umm,
whatshisname from Teddybears) who made the Fireside video, maybe
they just didn't want them (Fireside) to top theirs (Teddybears)
and made it the way it is? :-) No no, I don't really think that. :-)
But I love the Teddybears video - it's really worth watching.

Incidentally, it is Pat Scab of Teddybears (in)fame that directed
Fireside's new video. All of them 'bears are into making videos now,
Jocko made the last one for Salt.

I'm eagerly waiting. However, Johan Forsling said that they play
punk (*grin*). Yeah, Johan's given up a number of different majors
here on the university (maskin,matematik.. (sorry no english)).
Apparently he's going for the "systemvetare" major now... :-)
I love the hrnn hrrn video, but unfortunately I've only seen it twice.
