Hey!
Why isn't anybody saying anything?!
Olle Ljungstrom is playing live, and you just sit there, silent?!?
Actually, he's in Stockholm, Gino 6 feb.
I also see there's a Supersuckers/Loosegoats/Sindy Kills Me extravaganza at
Gino on 2 feb. Should i check it out? I've heard some rave reviews about
LG, but what are the others like???

Supersuckers are somewhat like Nomads, punky garage rock. I'm seriously
considering going, seems like a great triple bill to me.
Then there's Foetus, Swervedrive, Superchunk... hoo boy, I foresee some
holes in my wallet.

Okay okay. We'll have different covers for each tape then. A pity though.

Hey, now you're preconcieved. The girls look great, that what i meant. Just

hmm supersuckers play punk rock wearing cowboy-outfits, doing over the
top karate kicks and generally acting silly/drunk. like a punk rock
version of zz top maybe. pretty fun to see. at least for a while.

Monostar - previously known as Midnight Moses, were featured in an article
with an interview in the morning paper Svenska Dagbladet's
friday edition January 12th, 1996. Among other things, they
reveal that the only reason Carl Silver (bass) was added to
the already working band was because of his resemblance to
Neil Young. (?!) The band was also featured in one of Gotland's
(where they are from) papers around christmas last year, which
seems to have become a standard of sorts. At least the last
couple of years.
Musikrevyn - the music TV show on swedish TV 1 had premiere yesterday.
It made kind of a mixed impression on me, sort of a fast
version of "N|jesrevyn", which means I think it stinks.
The contents of the first program were, apart from small-talk:
Videos: Leila K - Electric, Skee-Lo - I Wish, Mouth - The Hole
Of Your Head, Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall.
Segment: Red Hot Chili Peppers special, w/interview, music etc.
Naked - are just about to release their debut single "Left Alone Again".
Described as Powerpop by SA's Jesper Larsson, and "A swedish
Weezer.", it sounds pretty interesting. Their self-titled album
will be released in March.

Well _that_ one _is_ listed in the Swedish Indie Bands Gig Guide! (I stopped

Subject: news & gossip from Finland
In the spirit of Erik's 'Selected News' extravaganza, I thought I'd
drop in a couple of tidbits from the Finnish pop scene:
Fridge, the Jyvaskyla-based powerpop trio, will soon release both
their debut 7" EP and their first full-lenght CD as well. They will be
on some new Finnish indie label(s). I had the luxury of getting a
'sneak preview' (quite literally, but that's anohter story :) of the
forthcoming stuff, and it was quite impressive; perhaps a bit flat,
but they weren't the final mixes and the song order hadn't been
decided yet.
The most promising new band from the Tampere area (Nokia to be more
exact), Dada Girl, have been in the studio preparing their second demo
tape, featuring three songs. And it's going to be massive, judging
from Sami's comments (he had the honour of hearing this already in the
'rough mix' stage, as he knows everybody and their sister from the pop
scene here :)
And finally, another local band Coo will be heading for studio as well
later this year to record tracks for a possible CD-EP release on
Tangerine. No exact dates were given, though.

When voting for the Swedish indie tape, i come to think of all those great
synth/body/electro bands that used to be around.
Most of them are now defunct, or playing some other style of music
(Mainstream, hardcore, crap teenypop), but once in history there guys made
_great_ music. I'm thinking of bands like:
Arvid Tuba
Scapa Flow (1st, 2nd albums)
Nasa
Adolphson & Falk
Pouppee Fabrikk (Portent CD, singles)
Cat Rapes Dog (1st, 2nd albums, singles)
SPOCK (early)
Cultivated Bimbo (first singles)
Elegant Machinery (first album)
Nike Strom (don't know if he ever made anything, was great live. Anyone know if
there are demos around?)
Don't be turned off by the names, many of them play lousy stuff today, but
created magic back in 1990-91.
Maybe there could be interest for a tape like this too???

yes, z-tv has played the video for the single a few times already.
i think they like it. and so do i. "a swedish weezer" isn't too bad
of a describtion. but completely without the, sometimes annoying,
heavy metal influence. kind of geeky/wimpy catchy pop along with
some nice, heavy distortion. hmm, darn, it's sounds like i just
described sammy yet again.. ;)

Great, that's the way I figured I'd do the Swedish tape as well. The
most easy way of doing it, I think.

Heh heh. Well, I've received invitations to Beat Butchers release party
next friday in Stockholm, but that's really because I work on their pages,
and I did get press passes to the Lollipop festival last summer, but
the Warner Showcase? Hmm, who should I contact?

Beat Butchers - the swedish punk/pop independent label presented their
1996 promo CD, which you soon will be able to win in the
Beat Butchers contest on their WWW pages (that's
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/beathome.html). The
promo has thirteen tracks from 12 bands, including the
latest signed bands Brandgul and Svart Sn|. Brandgul's
sound can be described as hard rolling power-pop guitars
with swedish lyrics, and Svart Sn| as genuine punk. The
promo is only avaliable through the contest, so keep your
eyes open!
Komeda - the band on the North Of No South label, is out with a new CD
titled "Genius Of Komeda" (NONSCD26).
Lousy - the Tenhult five-piece, will start recording their new demo in
February. After listening to four of their new songs that will
be included on the tape, two of them still without name, and the
other two called "Bug" and "Canada", I'd have to say that they
are still Lousy. :-) Seriously, all the segments that make Lousy
sound the way they do are there, the full-effect alarming guitars,
the whining synthesizer, fast hitting drums and light vocals.
Though "Bug" is far from their normal sound. A single guitar with
dreamy vocals, which really surprised me. Magnus says that it
probably won't sound that way when they record it "for real",
which I think is unfortunate, because it's great the way it is.
Pineforest Crunch - from Stockhom were featured in an article in morning
paper Svenska Dagbladet's friday edition "City" on
January 19th. Among other things, they tell the story
about when they used Stars On Mars' tour bus for a
completely self-booked tour of the UK, and that their
album, which will be released on February 26th, is
called "Make Believe".
Smash Hit Wonders - the band from Sk|vde are making their own home pages
as we speak. They are planned to be ready by week 4.
They also have a couple of gigs coming up - among
those, they play together with Popsicle in Sundsvall
on February 1st!
Topp40 - the swedish business music/entertainment magazine also noted
the Frank Black promotion "three guys dressed in black wearing
sunglasses, dancing to FB's latest single in a cassette deck
on the floor" stunt, with a picture of the guys and everything.
Wannadies - have finished recording their new album, but aren't sure when
it is going to be released. If their upcoming tour of the UK
together with Frank Black, starting January 29th, and the
forthcoming UK single "How Does It Feel" which will be released
on February 22nd (in two versions), are successful, the album
will not be released until autumn. If not, it will be released
this summer. It's the best album we've made, says singer P{r
Wiksten, who also tells the tale about the time when they played
in Finland last year and a police man came up on stage, wrestled
him down and took his guitar, because they had played too loud
and for too long.

This coming Friday (26/1) Beat Butchers will have a release party at
Studion for their new records with Coca Carola, Svart Sn| and
Radioaktiva R{ker. The festivities are "invitation only" though, but
Jojo at the label suggested that maybe some people on this list would
like to meet up in Stockholm and go to the party?
I'll be in Stockholm from friday afternoon, and think it's a great
idea. If you'd want to meet up and go to the party, let me know
(with your snail mail address, as Beat Butchers have to send you
an invitation-card), and we'll have a couple of beers, discuss the
scene (heh) and whatever!
Sounds good?

Subject: New WWW server
Good Sin WWW news! - Lysator has finally moved the WWW server from the old
net hog which was far to low on memory and slow slow slow. The new server
is of course reachable through the old name of www.lysator.liu.se, but
also, if you want, at hanna.lysator.liu.se.
That is, you don't have to change any pointers or URLs if you don't
want to.
The old one was a Sun SPARCserver 4/300 with 32MB RAM.
And here's the specifics for the new one if you're interested:
Hanna is a Sun SPARCserver 1000, donated by Sun Microsystems AB.
It came with:
* 4st SuperSPARC 51-CPU:s (50MHz Supersparc)
* 128MB RAM
* 4st 515MB SCSI-disks
* 1st CDROM-drive
* 1st DAT-tape station
* 2st extra FSBE-SCSI/Ethernet-cards (a total of 4st SCSI-controllers and
ethernet-ports)
This one's speedy, let me tell you. :-)

So i'm giving it away for free. (well you can buy me a beer if you want, or

First reply gets it. I'll mail you back so we can meet up at Studion.
"Who are Ruby anyway?" - It's Leslie from ole' Silverfish, you know that

If anyone goes to this gig, please let me know what they (Aloon)
sounded like (to you).
Pop's Terry Ericsson once wrote (about one of Aloon's demos):
"One of Sweden's most underestimated indiepop bands, Suredo, never got the
attention they deserved, and quit. Now they have their continuation, through
Mikael Myrnerts new project Aloon. Sometimes searching - and not at all in
parity with Suredo - this is something for all Pavement/Sebadoh-fans to keep
eyes and ears on. 'I Know What I Know' is in any case the best Chapel
Hill-pop that has ever been written in Johanneshov."
Though I don't trust Terry's word that much, so I'd rather hear it from
someone on the list. :-)

I actually have all of their albums. I was truly a fan and hooked when
I heard "10010", and what was it called.. "Signalen Blinkar Bl}" (?)
the first time. :-) They remind me of Stockholm when I was younger
every time I hear them nowadays. Don't know why, though it may be
because of the subway-samples they had on their third (?) album. :-)
