I really do wonder what the world is coming to when I read the piles of
incoherent babble (I think that best describes it) that some people have
written on this fan page thing. It is a sorry state of affairs but then
again, none of you are going to live in L8 next year and have your garden
wall covered in broken glass and razor wire.
It's a good show when you see that there are wire cages all over the windows
and the kids across the road try and shoot you with there air rifles.
Anyone out there live in Moss Side or Hansworth?
So once again LONG LIVE DANCE, ACUTALLY HARD HOUSE.

Goodbye

Okay, here is something I am completely ignorant about - house vs indie.
Would anyone care to elaborate? Names of bands that I might be able to
find here in the US might help, as well.

right since i mentioned the 1960s band cream i have one comment i hope
that remark above - about opening my mind beyond what the press tells you
is cool - was not directed at me. since if it was that was quite rude
becasue i do not like half the bands coming out of the uk these days. if
i listened to the press i'd be buying up menswear (which unfortunately
the charlatans really like and respect i know that for a fact), bis,
nancy boy, etc. fortunately for myself i do have an independent mind and
that is why i like bands like the longpigs, seefeel, loops, 60ft dolls,
gorky's zygotic mynci, the pale saints, mbv, and spiritualized. bands
that rarely get the press they deserve. as for liking bands dubbed by the press as "where it is
at" i only like 2 of them - the bluetons and super furry animals. oops
make that 3 i like dubstar as well. so i do have a mind of my own and i
was usuing it when i said i do not like the band cream of the 1960s. the
same way you were using it when you said you like that particular band.
after all we are all allowed to have our own opinions aren't we. it was
people who slagged off others opinions is the reson i got off other lists
from some of my favourite bands (like the paul weller list, pulp list,
and suede list). it would be really nice if this list could be thought
of as one of the best that discussed music, the band, their influences,
ect without any personal stabs - like the drone on
list(spiritualized/spaecman3/ride/etc) and the smiths/morriessey list.

right now if that was not directed at me at least i got that off my
chest. and i will appologize if i misread your comments and took them
too personally. so before you send me a nasty "flame" you have my
appology if i am wrong - he i'll admit my mistakes so that has to count
for something right?

Hi, Deborah.
Sorry if my "open your mind" comment seemed a little snarky...my alergies are
acting up today...putting me in a rather foul mood!
Anyway, I do hope that you give Cream (the 60's version) a second chance. While
I wouldn't call myself a fan, the guitar work on many of their songs pretty much
revoloutionized rock, and had a heavy influence on early-to-mid 70's Rolling
Stones material which, of course, is a major influence on the Charlatans.
Also, if you're a fan of the Bluetones, you might enjoy some of Cream's lighter
stuff; it has that same, mellow Byrds type sound that the Bluetones do so well.

Cheers!

i hate to admit it but i'm keen on the skinhead oconnor tune. 'adnan' and
'time for livin' are tops though. now did all the artists record on the same

Who said we were talking about the rock band Cream? I actually like
them. I was slagging off people who use this mailing list to discuss, I
think, the club "Cream" in Liverpool. What the hell does that have to do
with the Charlies? Tim may indeed possess some dance music, but I couldn't
give a flying fuck. Also, what does living in Moss Side or Toxteth, etc,
have to do with music preferences?

Wow,

What a fun mailing list this is. Thanks to everyone who bombarded me with
so much Charlies info. Because I live in Northern Canada, it's so hard to
find any decent cd's. So, on all of your advice, I am getting "Between
10th & 11th" sent up to me by a friend England. Also, because I'm going
crazy living in the nearly isolated Northern Canadian Wilderness, my best
friend and I are moving to England in October. Maybe that way I can
actually see the Charlies perform. I know, it's a bit sad to move to a
different country just because you like the music, but I'm just that kind
of girl. Since my friend and I know next to nobody there, and have no idea
where the fun places are to go, all suggestions/invitations are welcome!
We're very fun girls, you know. Anyways, keep the Charlies info coming in.
I can't get enough.

jen, no are you insane having between 10th and 11ths ent to you from
england. you will have to pay far too much money. like around $35 - $40
with the exchange rate. it will cost about 15pounds and figure in a 2.14
exchange rate (at least that is what it was when i changed money on the
weekend) plust postage of about 5pounds (i had a cd sent to me and that
was what my friend paid). any record shop (ie sams or sunrise even - i'm
sure they are in northern canada) will have it for under $25. plus i
often see it at used record shops.

and if you want information on things to do in england write to the
british tourist authority in toronto. it is on avenue road. get them to
send you a "central london nightlife guide"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I remember that the whole album was put
together in one week, so... Most songs were recorded "live". I just read
the inlet of the CD and it says that all songs were recorded on the same
day in different locations. That one week thing was that they started on
monday and CD was available after that week. (I think)

I'm having this weird feeling that my last message on this subject didn't get
through. Sorry if I'm repeating myself!!
Someone asked about the line "Not even the rain has such small hands"
I just wanted to point out that it comes from the last line of a fantastic poem
by e.e.cummings who Tim (and me!!) really loves. The last two lines are:

"The voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses
Nobody not even the rain has such small hands"

If anyone wants me to post the whole poem let me know.

Okay, someone told me that Elvis Costello did "Shipbuilding" and it
was originally some old war song...I have no idea, I plead ignorance,
I know this isn't charlatans related, but does anyone know?

hey

have just reclaimed my "Between 10th and 11th" CD and my fave as of
now is "Weirdo" -> it's pretty innovative in comparison to their songs
on the latest CD... but really i think most of their music is ace.
i'm also a recent fan -> as of last November, and have since
bought all the CDs I can find over here. and will now be buying
the some friendly video ASAP

who writes most of the lyrics? they seem obscure to me, and I have
found that most of my theories on the meanings of the songs on 'the
charlatans" were off the mark (after reading Eirik's website's
interview with Tim about the CD).

i know it's a lowly topic to bring up, but i haven't read much about
tim and sarah cracknell (st etienne) -> how long did they go out for?
has everyone seen the sweet video clip they did together for a st
etienne song (the name escapes me)?

That would be great if they came to Canada sometime before October (but I
doubt it). I would be willing to drive for 4 days to see them.
Now a question for all you Brits; how often do they play over there, are
the venues really big (I suppose that's a relative term), and are people
really obnoxious at gigs? I don't mind dancing and pogo-ing, but I hate
crowd surfers. It's worse when you're 6'2, because then you're pretty much
guaranteed to get at least a dozen blows to the head by somebody's boots.
Oh, and Conny, I live in Fort McMurray, which is about 4.5 hours north of
Edmonton. It's not /that/ north, I suppose, but it sure seems like it when
you're that far away from the closest city. But the huskies sure do like
the spring. They don't have to work as hard to get to our igloo :)

June, they play the Charlies, Roses, Inspirals, you name it, if its Madchester they'll play it.

Hi conny. There's little going on around the Charlatans right now, but one
date has been announced (18th of August in Chelmsford as mentioned earlier).
But that may mean that something will happen this spring, so you never know!

If you have access to the www, here's an excellent link to a T-shirt mail

Dear non-UK people,

Consider yourselves lucky! Although the Charlatans might play the UK more
than Canada, at least you can get a Some Friendly video. I think it was
only released in the US and Canada. It is also on NTSC format, so I can't
even copy it! The only thing over here is one live performance on "Butt
Naked" which I have (between 10th and 11th album mainly) and a rendition
of an early song on an indie compilation video.
I know what everyone means about discovering what the Charlatans lyrics
mean. They seem to be far more obscure than for most bands. My favourite
is "You're furious, I'm glorious".

Cheers!

Jen,

The Charlatans have come to Montreal several times in the past,
including last October shortly after they released their latest album.
They totally ROCKED. My friends told me they met Tim at the Between 10th
& 11th tour a few years back when they came to Montreal, and Tim was the
nicest guy in the world. He even gave them a bag of Revels!

There was no crowd-surfing, just a lot of dancing at last
October's gig at Club Soda (a smallish club here in Montreal where they
played). A few obnoxious people, but no moshing (thank God).

Anyway, I suspect they'll be back in Montreal once their new
album is released...whenever that is! Unfortunately, it's more than a
four hour drive from Alberta... :-)

At the risk of breaking every copyright law in existence, here's the poem:

Somewhere I have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which I cannot touch because they are too near.

Your slightest look easily will unclose me
though I have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, I and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing.

(I do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands.

Wow, it blows me away every time.
Enjoy.

exactly, anyone remember when our parents use to force us to wear pumas
since they were the cheap $9.99 shoes to school. parents could nto give
them away. and the only cool shoe back then was converse. oh god or am i
teh only one old enough to remember that. now but a few bands in them,
everyone from the beastie boys to the charlatans and oasis and they are
trendy. it is now an excuse for a shoe company to slap a 89.99 price tag
on them and make a fortune. okay i'm probably wrong on teh price but
since i don't own any i wouldn't know. i just remember seeing them about
a year ago and puma's were $89.99 adn adddas were not far off hte mark.

but then again it is the ame with everything these days. my biggest
annoyance being "vintage clothing stores". everything is outrageously
priced when the same things can be bought at the good will and salvation
army for next to nothing. but, now everyone wants to look like they are
in pulp.

There is a very cool website that has t-shirts for some of the bands

What about Airwalks? Don't think I've seen any bands wear them. They're
pretty fun shoes. Okay, they are skater shoes, granted, but they're still
fun. And, the ankles are even padded. Just a nice safety feature. Oh,
and so you know, I don't skate, I just like the shoes :)

What about Converse 'One Star'? Loads of people have blue and white
one round here. Myself, to be differnent, have a pair of brown and
green ones.

Have you noticed on the cover of Crashin' In the lads trainers? I
haven't got the cover infront of me but I seem to remember someone is
wearing some 'gazzels' and one of the boys looks like he should be in
the James Taylor Quartet.

Dodgy did an NME frontcover where they all wore brown Vans or Airwark.

Has anyone else noticed pictures of Northern Uproar in your local
Levis shop? It seems a bit of a change of direction after Jamiroquai
and Fluke.

Have the Charlies ever had any clothing deals, Joe Bloggs perhaps :)

Subject: Life under the influence of the Charlatans

Since no one really has any news about the Charlatans, I figured I might as
well add something interesting to the mix. If anyone cares to see it, I've
got a short story written by a friend who moved back from Seattle. I was
told it was written after going out on the town right after listening to the
Charlatans latest LP at full volume.

For those interested, please read below, and put on the Charlatans starting
with "Feeling Holy":

A sample of part 1:

"Dirty Laundry" by Jonny Disturbed copyright 1996, Sounds from the Street

If I had a camera (or a rifle) It'd do a much better job of chronicling my
dislike for this prairie state. As I merge onto Lyndale from Hennepin
cutting off another annoying driver in a Mitsubishi wagon, too small to see
and always changing lanes at the appropriate time to cause other cars to
brake like a fucking Fred Flintstone imitation, Neil Young salivates a nicer
sounding tune on a harp in a song on the Cities 97, nicer than his nasally
singing style. Another wave of tobacco arrives without invitation into my
Pontiac. Some University of Minnesota grad with a stupid baseball cap
drives by in a red ford minicar, his white knees almost pressing up to the
ceiling. He eyes the 25 cents Super Soda banner at the 24th and Lyndale SA
and dreams of a Pepsi with no ice..."I'll get more soda than they want me to
get and I'll drink a full one & refill it before I pay for it. Soda. Beef
jerky. Anything with cheese on it. Three-two beer bought after liquor
stores close at 9:00. Bliss.

A tall brunette, faceless under a tangled, unkempt mess of a windblown
hairstyle arrives at the heavy wooden door, carved nobly of British-like
inscription into eight even squares, and covered with eight generations of
bus exhaust, more dirt and grime worthy of Amoco station men's room sinks or
of Iron Range rooftops. Yeah. It's the same scary place I remember. You
have to like living in traffic, living in constant noise: police sirens,
cars pouring it on to beat the light, loud groups of baggy clothes wearin'
nose ring sportin' college students making their way to Muddy Waters for a $2
cup of coffee or a Leine's and a Marlboro at the Leaning Tower of Pizza.
Just now a tall blonde, Nordic-looking lad in a "hail Satan" tee shirt
skipped by on the sidewalk one foot on board, and one foot on his imaginary
place in Hell I'm sure. At the Leaning Tower, the evening I was with John,
Anne (the Sigourney Weaver twin, tall, skinny, red-haired and glamorous even
when plowed) puffing on a marlboro Red, slamming a gin-soaked watered down
cocktail chased with a Grain Belt "Premium" (a beer oxymoron?). This was a
Bukowski scene. John is mickey Rourke. Anne is Faye Dunaway. The two
others at the bar, a fat german with oval shades, Rob, and his bubbly
gal-pal, Rose, with big tits shown off in a cleavage revealing dress, are
their fellow barflies. They all made this night a gem (if sandstone is
precious).

to be continued...upon request.

ATTENTION ALL UK PEOPLE: What does "bob's yer uncle" mean???? I see it on
all the brit magazines and such. so if you know, please respond promptly!!
also , this doesn't have much to do with the charlatans, but i was wondering
if anyone caught the pulp show in toronto at the opera house. i thought it
was amazing and jarvis looked sweet of course, sporting tight orangish-brown
bellbottoms and such... it was well worth the 2 hr. car ride from buffalo.

Ok. Where's all the boots from the tours encompassing
the releases of 'up to our hips' and 'charlatans'? There must be
plenty of opportunity. I mean after the stone roses toured last
year a flood of boots hit the market almost instantly. Can
anyone explain this?
